John Singer Sargent • La Carmencita (Carmen Dauset Moreno) • 1890 • Musée d'Orsay (image courtesy of Wikipedia)
La Carmencita was included in the exhibition Fashioned by Sargent, which I attended yesterday at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts.
The gallery card:
Sargent was entranced with the twenty- one-year-old Spanish dancer Carmen Dauset Moreno, better known as La Carmencita, who performed in music halls and private settings in the United States, Europe, and South America. Billing herself "the pearl of Seville," she danced the bolero, a style that shares some aspects of classical ballet. She was especially admired for her whirling, twisting movements, often revealing more of her legs than some felt proper; she had a "fatal earthiness," according to one society columnist. Sargent found her "bewilderingly superb," and saw her perform on multiple occasions in New York, where he painted her in a borrowed studio. He depicted this vivacious dancer standing still, perhaps before the action or at its end. Her liveliness is encapsulated in his paint-swaths of golden yellow overlaid with dabs of white and gray that shimmer against the dark background, just like the beads and spangles on her dress.
Displayed nearby was the actual dress which I was able to photograph, albeit hastily.

Fashioned by Sargent at MFA Boston closes January 15, 2024
Earlier this week went to the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) Boston to see the Fashioned by Sargent exhibit, which closes in two weeks. This exhibit from the MFA is one of my favorites in recent memory. Perhaps Bostonians more than most Americans are interested in Sargent because of how much of his work has ended up here but it was apparent this exhibit has been embraced by the city. When I remarked…

Evening Dress • Unidentified Maker • American • Silk velvet with silk plain weave lining

How wonderful that such a well-preserved dress exists to enliven a famous portrait painting! This dress is one of my favorites for a couple of reasons – firstly, I love velvet and this silk velvet is the real deal – gorgeous. Secondly, I've seen the portrait many times at the MFA in Boston. The dress was in a glass case at the blockbuster Fashioned by Sargent exhibition also at the MFA.
I've read that Louise Inches was expecting her third child when she sat for this portrait and that the dress had been designed to accommodate extra panels as her figure expanded. She and Sargent got on well. Both were music lovers and accomplished musicians.

John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) • Portrait of Mrs Leopold Hirsch • 1902 • Tate, Britain
Note: While I did take the photo of the painting above, I wasn't at the Tate. I attended the exhibition Fashioned by Sargent currently at The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. It is a collaboration between the MFA and the Tate; both museums having several Sargents in their collections. The exhibition showcases a gorgeous collection of Sargent portraits and displays of attire worn by the subjects of those portraits, while also illuminating the ways in which fashion played a key role in his artistic process. Follow the link for the complete introductory exhibition text and a nice little video presentation.
The gallery card below is from the Tate, as I was unable to photograph the card at the MFA - too many people.
At the beginning of this century Sargent was recognised as the outstanding portrait painter in London. His latest commissions were exhibited at the Royal Academy every year. In 1902 he sent to the Academy this portrait of Mrs Leopold Hirsch, the wife of a banker in London. He also showed the three sisters 'The Misses Hunter', displayed now on the end wall of this gallery. His depiction of Mrs Hirsch was praised for its 'simplicity and dignity', and judged to be 'in the true spirit of the old masters'. It is modelled on Velasquez, and the colours of the pink dress and grey lace follow one of the greatest of Velazquez's portraits, 'Phillip IV at Fraga'.
