CHAPTER 2

Ship: Hozier and Farren(ONBC)

Andrew and Farren have been traveling through the centuries. Andrew remembers each time, when each of their times together ended in horrible tragedy. Farren never remembers, but their hearts call to each other in every life time, even if it brings pain. Andrew is breaking now, just needing one happy ending where they don't die crushed to death- sacrificed to old gods- hunted for their love- or torn apart in battle.

All he wants is to have Farren and live in peace. Hopefully, the Gods will grant mercy at last for his past transgressions that led to this cycle.

Farren woke the next morning to golden rays burning across their face, causing them to hiss softly in pain, rolling over trying to throw the bed cover over their face grumbling softly and angrily at the sun for daring to wake them, even if it was their own fault for not closing the curtains.

It was a moment of quiet contemplation, eyes held shut, breathing in and out easily. Finally when their brain decided that it did, in fact, want to be alive and awake, they slipped out of bed steadily, bare feet hitting the floor. After going through their morning routine, they sat down at their desk, ready to get started on their projects for the day. Though upon opening the laptop, it was an email that caught their attention.

An interview for the bartender and artist position. Responding quickly they decided that if they could interview today they would. Starting by the next week would be divine. It didn’t take too long to get started on their commissions, though they were anxiously awaiting to hear from the venue.

Almost two hours later, they got a phone call, offering an on the spot interview.

A few hours later, Farren was there in front of the building, dressed in a white button down shirt and bell bottom stretch pants, wearing platform shoes. Looking around they were a bit shocked, it was a nice large venue, with some historic undertones. All they could think of was hoping to be a candidate for the job.

Stepping in, they couldn’t help but appreciate the red brick walls and the hardwood bar that greeted the doors. There was a man sitting and waiting, for them it seemed. The way he jumped to his feet, moving close hand extended, blond locks tied back neatly. “Avira Swan- It’s lovely to meet you- Farren was it?” he questioned warmly, gently pressing a hand to their back guiding them to an office with a smile.

“We just came under new management- and we’re determined to put in a beautiful mural-” he explained. It seemed this man had visions for the venue and was insisting upon it. Already pulling out a contract. “Feel free to sign, Mx. Doven.”

“What about the interview-?” Farren started to question, reading through the contract curiously. It was fairly standard. Some things were… odd. Riches and prosperity for as long as they obeyed, if contract is broken, owned by one (1) Avira Swan for ten years. That was the line that stood out.

“Don’t worry about the interview. Your art skills are exactly what I want for the mural- Absolutely beautiful.” he said reassuringly, devilishly green eyes watching them like a hawk, except focused on the pages in their hands.

They hummed softly, they’d be stupid to turn this down. It paid so well… but the one line worried them. “What does this mean… can you clarify…?” Farren questioned, “I would love to accept so long as i can understand this or have it removed-” they said licking their lips nervously. Something felt wrong with this- but the money they couldn’t refuse.

Avira frowned in concern and looked over, and sighed, “Oh- I can have that removed. My lawyer must have taken a joke too far- I apologize.” He took the contract away and the feeling subsided, “Thank you that could have been a lot of paperwork later on.” he chuckled.

The beautiful man smiled fondly, “Let me get that taken care of.” he said softly, standing and moving to a filing cabinet throwing out the old contract and bringing over a fresh one and offered it to Farren. They looked through it firmly, humming softly as they did. A melody that haunted their head. “That’s an old song, dear,” Avira commented thoughtfully, elbow on the table his fingertips supporting his chin as he watched them. “Take care of what it may summon, my dear.”

“You know it?” they questioned, attention diverted.

He smiled softly, “It’s an old song… very old. Legend says it was written by a fae who fell in love with a mortal despite the warnings that he shouldn’t, that he would be cursed as they would be. Whenever the song is hummed or sung… played… he shows up searching for his love. Destruction follows him…”

Something… something itched in the back of their mind at the story. It couldn’t… it wouldn’t be real. They hummed running their fingers through their black and blue hair. “It sounds like a tragic love story… but just a story.” Their lips quirked, eyes returning to the contract reading through it. Nothing was jumping out this time at least.

“If it is just a story its a story that’s unfinished, dear.”

They didn’t know what to say to that, so they asked a different question. “What is the mural to be of?” they asked.

“I’d like it to be a mural that depicts the fae… and music of course. Just whatever feels right to you. I’ll show you the spot for the mural.” he added as those almost glowing green eyes focused on her hands signing the contract.

“Of course. Can I get a copy of the contract please? For my own records.” she clarified.

“Of course.” Avira said warmly, pulling out a contract from the same folder passing it to her, letting her glance through it before standing. “Now… let’s get you that tour to the place for the mural.” he purred, a sound that seemed to soak into her mind.

Andrew had been getting ready to perform feeling a tremor along the red cord coming from his chest making his throat tighten. They remembered the song. It had vibrated many times over the years. It always happened at odd intervals but… that was a sign. His long fingers touched the cord lightly. “Beloved… I’ll find you. I’ll find you no matter where you are.” he breathed out, muddy green eyes focused on the translucent cord. “My beloved.”

winner winner; part three of sore loser ⋆ part 2

summary: you play astoundingly better when you know they're watching | content/warning: explicit language, reader being kinda mean, shitty tennis descriptions, light angst but not really.

It's weeks before you see either one of them again. You'd catch glimpses of Art here and there when moving around campus, but you never made an effort to stop and talk to him. A small part of you was a bit embarrassed about your behavior from that night, not having a clue where the sudden confidence had come from.

But you also had to admit you thought about that night often. There was something very addictive about having two people hanging at your every word, sat at your lap like scolded puppies.

You had never felt anything like the way you had felt that night, with Patrick biting and sucking at your neck while you looked at the painfully sullen expression on Art's face. It's a feeling you only allowed yourself to relish in the dead of the night, when you were all alone with nothing else but your thoughts to occupy you.

You willed those thoughts away for now, cringing at the fact that you were thinking about them now of all times.

"Did you fuck her?"

Patrick's question caught Art off guard, even if he had been expecting it eventually. He rolled his eyes at his friend's crass language. "No," Art answered, sinking a bit further into the uncomfortable pavillion seat, "she avoids me like the plague."

"D'you think she regrets what happened that night?" Patrick asked after a short silence. "I dunno," he answered, crossing his arms as he squinted down at the empty clay turf. His back straightened when the announcer's voice boomed across the speakers, shortly after catching a glimpse of you as you emerged onto the turf with the rest of the girls.

You were laughing at something one of your teammates were saying, a smile reminiscent of the one you had gave him that night as you beckoned him closer.

You made your way over to one of the benches, plopping your bag down before you started stretching. Soon Patrick's eyes were glued to you as well, the two of them quietly observing as you got ready for your singles match.

Your eyes briefly scanned over the small crowd as you did a few crossbody stretches. It didn't take you long to notice the two boys sitting third row, their eyes already focused on you. The smiles that gradually stretched across both their faces almost made you burst out in laughter, but you couldn't find it in you to laugh at them, much less even look at them.

You turned your back on them, not sparing them another look or even a greeting as you sighed, physically feeling the tension return to your shoulders.

You bounced the ball in your hand two, three times, every soft thud as the ball met the turf vibrating throughout your body and up your spine. You looked at your opponent and then briefly up at the crowd, everyone mute in anticipation. Your eyes met theirs again because of course it did.

Neither of them were smiling anymore, practically hunched over in their seats as they waited for your next move.

You just need to get out of your head.

Your serve is strong, and once you hear Farren Troy's sneakers squeek against the clay as she scurries after the ball, it's like a switch is flipped in your head, and the only thing you could see in your peripheral is the ball going back and forth between the two of you.

Patrick and Art's eyes follow you like a hawk, backs now straight as pins and on the edge of their seats as they watch you walk poor Farren Troy like a dog. The last time they had watched you play it was a close, tough game but today's game almost seemed unfair, Farren scurrying around the turf like a headless chicken as you gave her absolute hell.

They were laser focused on every little detail; every grunt and punched out groan-scream that left your mouth as you hit the ball, the way your limbs stretched out to hit the ball just right and ultimately the way that coy smile stretched across your pretty face when the scores were read.

You gave Farren a handshake over the net, thanking her before making your way back to the chair, sitting down with a grunt as the feeling washed over you.

This was why you played– this feeling was unlike anything else. Indescribable and inimitable. It settled deep in your bones and made you lightheaded with pride. No drug could come close, you decided in that moment.

The locker rooms were filled with happy chatter and laughing, boosting your mood even more as you made your way back to your dorm room, your bed the only thing on your mind. On your way, you made a detour to the food court, going to try your luck with their vending machine for a snack or two.

You should've been surprised to find Art there, but you weren't. A part of you, albeit small, hoped he'd be there. You gave him a small smile as you made your way over to the vending machine. To your luck, it jammed, the pack of pretzels taunting you as they hung on the cusp and way out of your reach.

A sudden kick to its side, though, and the packet felt right down and into your grateful grasp. "Thank you," you said begrudgingly as Art leaned his body against the side of the machine, watching as you bent down to grab your snack.

You sighed when you stood at full height, and he still wasn't gone, but against your better judgment, you decided to play along for a little while. "Where's your boyfriend?" you asked, opening the packet and taking two pretzels out. "On a bus to San Francisco," he answered. You pouted playfully. "Ah, that's too bad. I would've liked to catch up," you frowned. "Oh, so I'm only of importance when he's around. Otherwise you ignore me?" he asked.

"I never said that," you argued, placing another pretzel in your mouth, finishing chewing completely before you continued, "It's just more fun when it's both of you."

"I'll see you around," you added before being on your way. "What do I have to do to get your number?" he shouted at your back and you shrugged, before you spoke up. "Practise with me tomorrow."

“Fen, this is beautiful, thank you!” Farren wrapped the cowl around her shoulders, brushing her cheek against the soft fur. “Did you hunt and make this yourself?” she asked with a look in his direction as she continued to appreciate his efforts.

“Indeed I did,” he confirmed, “I thought the red fox fur would compliment your hair and it does quite beautifully.”

Farren took the one remaining gift off of the side table next to her chair. “Last one,” she murmured with a smile.

Fenris pulled the twine free and set it aside, peeling back the plain brown paper. He had gotten used to receiving books from Farren for various occasions, or simply because she wanted to, but this one surprised him. There was no title on the cover or spine and when he flipped through the pages, he found them blank.

“Amatus, this book is missing all of its words.” He raised a brow and looked up at her.

“It’s supposed to be. It’s for your thoughts and feelings, or anything else you might choose to use it for. I thought you could use it to practice your writing. You don’t have to show it to anyone so you can do whatever you’d like.”

“Does that mean we will no longer be reading together?” Farren noticed the audible hint of disappointment in his voice. When it was just the two of them, he allowed those emotions to show a bit more. Though, not completely. Yet.

“No, I enjoy that too much. I love when you read to me,” she assured him.

“I cannot fathom why. You are constantly having to assist me or correct my pronunciation.” He closed the journal and set it on his lap.

“It isn’t how you read to me, Fen, but that you do.” Farren smiled and leaned forward in her chair. “I never grow tired of your voice.”

“Nor I yours,” he gave her that hint of a smile that always made her heart beat faster. He held up the journal. “Would it be rude of me to write in this now?”

Farren was surprised by his eagerness, but certainly pleased. “Not at all. You can use my desk and supplies. I’ll be here by the fire if you need any help.”

With a slight nod, he rose from his chair and moved to her writing desk. He stayed there for the better part of an hour, slowly forming each letter. Occasionally he would scratch something out and grunt in frustration or sound out a word under his breath. Farren glanced over intermittently, unable to stop her smiles. That he would show her that vulnerability, with his back to her and the door no less. He trusted her to both protect him when he was distracted and to withhold judgment on his lack of ability to read and write.

Maker, she loved him.

Farren set down her book when he finally rose and sat in the chair across from her again. He held out the closed journal, looking down at it rather than her.

“Would you read it?” he asked, finally glancing up with his captivating green eyes.

“You know it’s private right? You don’t have to share it.” Farren wanted to make it clear that the journal was his personal space.

“I would like you to,” he insisted, “please.”

She pursed her lips in a tight smile to hide her absolute joy and took the leather-bound journal, opening it to the first page. Fenris’s familiar shaky handwriting took up the full space and spilled onto the next. It was filled with spelling and punctuation errors, but the more she read, the less she noticed.

My amatus is a mage. She has taut me many things. Not all mages korupt everything they touch. She tries to make the world beter, even if I do not always agre how she does it. She maks me want to be beter. I thawt my love for her made me a slayve to her but it does naut. I am a free man bekause of her and I chose to be free with her bekause I love her.

The way he’d written over and underlined ‘with’ made a lump of emotion form in her throat. By the time she looked up at him, tears had gathered in her eyes. His expressive brows furrowed, green eyes darkening. “Is it so bad? Are you not able to read it?”

“No, I can read it.” Farren had a hard time speaking any louder than a whisper for fear of her voice breaking. She swallowed thickly, looking back down at his words. “These are your thoughts and feelings about me?”

“Yes. They are much harder to say than to write, even with my literary deficiencies,” he admitted hesitantly.

She sat forward, handing him the journal back. “Will you read me the last three words?”

Fenris glanced down to remember what they were and smiled ever so slightly. “Those three words should not be a surprise to you.”

“No, but I like hearing them anyway.” She brushed away the tears that had gathered at the corner of her eyes.

“I love her,” he quoted, meeting her gaze as he spoke them. She knew that he did, but it was still rare for him to voice it aloud. “I love you, amatus.”

She rose from the chair and took the journal gently from his hands, setting it aside with the utmost of care. Climbing onto his lap, she straddled his hips and wrapped her arms around his neck. “I love you too,” Farren murmured against his lips before kissing him gently.

It very rapidly evolved into something much more urgent and needy. She finally broke away with a gasp, rolling her hips slightly to feel his grasp against her backside, not having realized until then that his hands had traveled there. She smiled, brushing back his hair so that she could fully appreciate his hungry gaze.

“How about we retire to our room and you can unwrap me?” she suggested, pressing into the cradle of his hips and the bulge in his pants.

With his hands still on her backside, he surged up from the chair. “Absolutely,” he growled. Farren wrapped her legs around him with a laugh. As he walked them to the bedroom, she lavished his neck with kisses, licks, and love bites. “If you keep that up, there will be no unwrapping. I will rip everything off of you.”

Farren’s only reaction to his words was to bite the lobe of his ear and tug, prompting him to take the remaining stairs two at a time.

Dragon Age Fanfic Recs (1/11/21)

I love fanfic rec lists because it helps keep an author’s work circulating, and for those of us who don’t have a lot of time to dig deep into the tags, it’s helpful to have someone else point out stuff to check out. So, although I don’t read a ton of fic myself, here are some of the ones I’ve really enjoyed!

I tried to group them by the “central” character POV within each game but it’s not exact. There are recs for all 3 games here, and do feel free to share any of your own recommendations!

Dragon Age Origins

First Line Game

Thanks to @curiousartemis and @musetta3 for the tags! 💖

Rules: List the first lines of your last 20 stories (if you have less than 20, just list them all!). See if there are any patterns. Choose your favorite opening line.

I’ve been more prolific than I THOUGHT, thanks to all the short fics I did in October! Most of these are on Ao3, but a couple of them are still only on my tumblr here. The later fics on the list are Skyrim stuff, which I was writing more at the end of summer!

My Last 20 Fics

1. Hero, Champion, Inquisitor

She was still recovering from the battle when she first heard the title they had given her — the “Hero of Ferelden.”

2. Haven

The Chantry was eerie at night, lit only by candles and lanterns and filled with a strange blend of noise.

3. Crow

He heard Zevran slink in through the window, the clink of his armor a familiar noise.

4. Chargers

“There’s the beast, my Lord!”

5. Wicked Grace

The last way Dirk had expected to spend his first night back in Denerim after becoming a Warden was at the Pearl, playing Wicked Grace…

6. Mabari

They had barely settled for the night when Dirk was awakened by the sound of quiet whines and pained yelps coming from just outside his tent.

7. Maleficarum

“I’ve been saving this for a special occasion,” Merrill said, grinning as she set a bottle of Dalish wine in the center of her small table.

8. Spirit

Cole was drawn to the boy who lingered in the corners of places, like he did.

9. Elvhen

“I’m so glad you could make it!” Merrill greeted Hawke with a warm smile and a quick hug, then turned to Fenris and grinned when she saw the toddler squirming in his arms.

“Dunno how you can stand it,” Farkas said, standing a little ways back from the forge.

“Do you ever think about how lucky we are?” Aril asked one night — his fingers tracing one of the more nasty looking scars Farkas had on his chest.

18. The Sound of Her Heart

In the quiet hour before dawn, Niruin lay awake, listening as the city began to wake up outside.

19. Spiders

“The cave should be around here somewhere,” Aril said, glancing up from the note he’d hastily scribbled down when he and Farkas had agreed to go take care of a suspected vampire den in the area.

20. Stranded

Thunder crackled in the distance, making Aril whine and cup his ears while Eira winced and glanced at the sky nervously.

As far as patterns go, I often start with a something vivid and tangible, whether it’s a description of something someone is seeing, hearing, or feeling and sometimes that’s a snappy bit of dialogue.

My favorite first line is the one from Breach, because I feel like it has just the right amount of humor and tension, especially when you get a little further in and see Tamlen’s reply and how their banter continues.

Dream job: Sort of have it? I’m an actress in musical theatre and an architect (which is technically my real job, but saying actress first sounds more fun). I also do commissioned paintings.

Wearing: Denim trousers, ballet flats, and a tie-dyed blouse I stole from me sister.

Favourite Song: Do you realize you’ve asked the impossible? At the moment, as in today’s number one, I s’pose it’d have to be Which Witch, Florence + The Machine.

Favourite Instrument: I play the pianoforte and really love it, the flute, I fancy electric guitar, too.

Aesthetic: Old books with tea-stained edges, the grey of dawn and ocean mist as seen by a lighthouse over a rocky shore, red lipstick and oversized sweaters, hands constantly covered in paint, that feeling of nostalgia you get when you walk into an overgrown garden, neon lights reflected in puddles on the asphalt of empty carparks, hand-written love letters in haiku form in bold calligraphy font and shimmering ink.

Favourite animal noise: Doves, my dog’s snoring, birds in the early morning, cats when they purr.

On ‘Twin Peaks’, Part 2

“It Is Happening Again...”

NOTICE: Welcome to Part 2 of my Twin Peaks appreciation! Again, I have tried to avoid concrete spoilers, but if you’re new to the series, the less you know going in, the better. For other fans, welcome.

Over Memorial Day weekend of 2017, it happened. Defying massive skepticism, the unavailability of certain key cast members, and twenty-five years of theories and criticism, David Lynch premiered some of his most confounding and formally audacious work to date, less a season of TV than an eighteen-hour film. It's difficult to know where to start when talking about The Return, because its narrative strands cross and loop and converge in baffling ways. The original series had a relatively straight time-structure—even Fire Walk With Me fits fairly neatly into the scheme of things. The Return discards all that, taking us from a starless void navigated by a woman with sewn-shut eyes, to Las Vegas and New York, to the Trinity nuclear test.

At times, it seemed like Lynch was waving a giant middle finger at our collective nostalgia. You want Dale Cooper? Here's 'Mr. C.' (McLachlan), the man who emerged from the Black Lodge a quarter-century ago, a snake-eyed, soft-spoken, pitiless crook. Here's 'Dougie Jones' (McLachlan again), a pleasant-enough sort who is nonetheless cheating on his wife with a sex worker. And here, finally, is anti-Cooper (also McLachlan)—dressed in the familiar black suit, with that swoop of dark hair now shot through with silver, utterly unable to navigate the world around him, repeating whatever is said to him in a dreamlike, stilted monotone.

Then again, there were callbacks to the original series that felt like blessings. Deputy 'Hawk' Hill (Michael Horse), gentle as always, talking late into the night with Margaret Lanterman, a.k.a. the Log Lady (Catherine Coulson). Her face and voice ravaged by illness, she seemed desperate to impart her final oracles to a sympathetic ear. (Coulson was in fact suffering from cancer at the time, and succumbed shortly after her scenes were filmed). There was the radiant Shelley Briggs (née Johnson) at the Roadhouse with her girlfriends, defending the lovelorn James Hurley. And best of all, on the primary case, we got ebullient FBI director Gordon Cole (David Lynch) and the curmudgeonly Albert Rosenfield (Miguel Ferrer), cracking wise but full of almost brotherly concern for one another.

Even more pointedly than the original series, The Return grounded its nightmare vision in the quotidian world. A house in a subdivision occupied by a strung-out young woman yelling the same three digits with incantatory force. Another sad-eyed blonde (Amanda Seyfried) in a turbulent relationship with an abusive, sniveling meth-head (Caleb Landry Jones). The handsome, menacing Richard (Eamon Farren), summoning an underage girl to his table at the Roadhouse and then nearly choking her just for kicks. (That scene in particular gave me chills—I've been in situations like that, where it all seems like a joke until it suddenly, clearly isn't.) In the original series, the rot was concealed under a façade of small-town hygge; in The Return, there is no façade left.

The most exciting kind of show, for me, is one where absolutely anything could happen (frequently, these have been 'genre' shows: Hannibal, Vikings, the UK series Misfits). Going into each episode of The Return, while I certainly had predictions, I never felt like I knew how this hour would unfold. This is a world where the camera lingers for two minutes on a man sweeping sawdust, as "Green Onions" plays in the background. A girl home from a first date sits up in her bedroom, listening to "My Prayer" by The Platters, only to have the broadcast interrupted by a dreadful, sonorous voice speaking a mysterious litany that puts everyone who hears it into a deep sleep. Cars drive down two-lane highways in the darkness, with no signposts and no landmarks. The stage at the Roadhouse is occupied by acts ranging from "The" Nine Inch Nails, to boys with pompadours who sing like Hank Williams formed a trio with the Everlys.

You'll notice, if you're still with me (you trooper, you), that I have not yet mentioned Audrey Horne. In some ways, among the show's die-hard fans, Audrey's mythos loomed even larger than Laura's. Audrey, the brunette in saddle shoes and sweater sets, who shared a lineage with sirens like Lauren Bacall and Rosalind Russell—spunky dames who didn't take any guff, but would melt for the right man. Audrey, last seen chained to a bank vault, shortly before a bomb went off. Yes, I loved her, and was desperate for any hint of her fate. Without venturing any further into spoiler territory than I have already, let me just say I still am.

Yes, sometimes, The Return is downright frustrating. I was along for the ride, but there were a few moments when I considered getting out of the car and, at the very least, taking a breather. But, as with most things, my patience would be rewarded. I wouldn't trade the shenanigans of the Mitcham brothers (plus Candie, the vaguely extraterrestrial showgirl), or the thrill of the twofold reveal of Laura Dern's character, or the fiercely maternal protectiveness of Janey-E Jones (Naomi Watts) for anything. Carl Rodd (Harry Dean Stanton) plaintively singing "Red River Valley" in his relocated trailer court… Albert finding a kindred spirit in a sardonic small-town medical examiner (Jane Addams)… The adorable British lad, Freddie Sykes (Jake Wardle), who becomes a kind of Sir Gawain of the Green Gardening Glove… all these things, and many more, kept winning me back.

Of all the filmmakers working today, Lynch has performed some of the most radical tests of the potential of film as a vehicle for storytelling. Visually, yes, with those vibrant reds and blues, the rich earth tones, and the stark black-and-white of Episode 8. Aurally, with Angelo Badalamenti’s otherworldly music. And perhaps most importantly, psychologically—using our common cultural knowledge and our love of film itself to deepen the context of what we’re seeing. (For an irreverent example, see Albert grumbling, “Fuck you, Gene Kelly!” as he makes his way through a freezing downpour.)

And Laura? Well, as the Log Lady so poignantly put it, "Laura is the one." In the end, it all came back to her. In thinking about her character over the course of my acquaintance with the show, I'm reminded of another doomed beauty: Miranda in Picnic at Hanging Rock, who likewise disappears into a realm beyond ours. Like Laura, Miranda seems somehow aware of her fate—indeed, one interpretation that could apply to both girls is that they offered themselves as a sacrifice to the darkness. But that doesn't make their demise any easier to comprehend. Seeing Sheryl Lee let loose her bone-rattling scream for one last time, on the street in front of the house that was, and was not, the Palmer's, hearing the echo of Sarah Palmer call her daughter's name across years and dimensions… I mean, a few minutes later, I was leaning against my kitchen cabinets, sobbing. We were left with so many questions. Can you ever really know a person? How do you save someone who doesn't believe they're worth saving?

Oh, and what *was* Jerry Horne smoking?

Did Nadine really mean what she said this time?

Just how did that danged fish get in the percolator?

#TwinPeaks Review: The Person Everybody Has Been Waiting to See for Over 25 Years Doesn’t Disappoint

Plus, here are some theories on how the dots connect through electrical crackles, coins, and Hawk’s heritage

While “Twin Peaks” continues to play the long game when it comes to its various mysteries, Sunday’s episode at least offered a tantalizing carrot to viewers one-third of the way through the season. Fans finally got to see whom Agent Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) has been speaking to all of these years: The never-before-seen Diane, naturally portrayed by David Lynch favorite Laura Dern.

Diane was Cooper’s secretary from his earliest days in the FBI and the recipient of all of his audio reports and musings. She never appeared on screen, but he confided everything in her. Many speculated long before the show premiered that Dern, who had never been a part of the original “Twin Peaks” cast, would get the plum role of Diane.

The scene, while brief, is satisfying in its details. Albert’s (Miguel Ferrer) important work that evening is to follow up on that promise that he “knows where she drinks,” which is apparently Max Von’s Bar. The peroxide blonde bob is a slight misdirection, since that sleek hairdo doesn’t telegraph Dern’s usual beachy-blonde waves.

But just as Lynch giveth, he taketh away. The glimpse is fleeting. Diane clearly knows Albert after addressing him by name, but beyond that, we only know that she’s rather stylish, smokes and drinks martinis. Answers about how she will help with Cooper or any Blue Rose cases will have to wait. And wait we will through 12 more episodes if necessary.

The timing and the brevity confirm just how deliberate all of these revelations and dribbles of information are. It is a bright moment in an episode that continues to unspool its disparate storylines but this time, actually makes a few more connections without any hugely surreal or inexplicable moments.

The Caffeinization of Cooper

The season has stretched out its “getting to know” Cooper phase throughout the episodes in tandem as he is finding himself, instead dumping it at the beginning of the series. Thanks to a combination of coffee and MIKE, aka the Man with One Arm (Al Strobel), who pleads with Cooper to “Wake up. Don’t die,” Cooper continues to become more lucid.

As in the casino, Cooper has visions that lead him, but this time it’s in the case files given to him by Lucky 7 Insurance to review. There is method to this Dougie madness as he doodles ladders and staircases and lines connecting names in the files. His boss Bushnell Mullins (Don Murray) seems to make sense of it and asks him to “keep this information to yourself” for now.

Again, the show’s credits give the best clues as to what’s happening since Tom Sizemore’s character Anthony Sinclair wasn’t seen in the episode much, but he was peering out of his office when Cooper got called in to see Mullins. Anthony Sinclair’s name is also seen as a signature on an insurance claim. Could we say fraud? And didn’t Cooper say, “He’s lying” about Sinclair before?

This is a situation though, in which the answers may not be that important except as a means to an end. Only the events of the show will be able to confirm whether or not corruption means anything, but what it important is that whatever the powers that be are up to, they’ve been active. In a scene right before Cooper has his vision in front of the case files, we see a street light change and hear that familiar electrical crackle (that we heard in the glass box room and other places before) that coincides with or precedes an important event.

Riding the Electrical Crackle

Unfortunately, whatever the power of that crackle is, it’s not just a force for good, which makes sense since there is a White Lodge and Black Lodge, good and evil. Over in Twin Peaks, the second time we hear that buzz is right after that dastardly Richard Horne (Eamon Farren) is the perpetrator of a horrifying hit and run. As the distraught mother cradles her dead son’s body, our attention gets called upwards to a telephone pole and that familiar crackle. Is this how garmonbozia travels and then somehow gets spit out elsewhere as creamed corn?

Richard’s actions confirm that he’s as bad as his first impression led us to believe, but the episode reveals that he’s small fry, a mere pawn. Mr. Finger Guns himself, Red (Balthazar Getty) is calling the shots in what sounds like an illegal drug deal. Red also acts oddly… as if he’s new to his body or can’t control it as well as he does dimes. Bits of metal may have some significance this season. That he seemed to know Shelly (Madchen Amick) in the second episode in the Bang Bang Bar could be cause for concern.

One more note about bad guys in Twin Peaks. Richard had bribed Deputy Chad Broxford (John Pirruccello) who was in plain clothes in the previous episode at the Bang Bang Bar, and Chad continues to appear without conscience, kindness or empathy after a scene in which he mocks the suicide of Sherriff’s son as a result of PTSD.

The Dougie Connection

Even before Cooper was reborn via electrical socket and took over Dougie’s life, people were out to kill Dougie, not Cooper. While we await answers on the why, the episode did start to offer a few answers and connections. For one, the people whom Janey-E was so concerned about owing money are merely small-time. They don’t appear to have any more sinister or supernatural evil powers that would connect them with the Black Lodge.

Unfortunately, those who want Dougie dead do have a connection with things or people disappearing into thin air and turning into bits of metal. A hitman that the credits helpfully lists as Ike “The Spike” Stadtler (Christopher Zajac-Denek) takes out Lorraine (Tammie Baird), whom was stressed out in the previous episode after finding out Dougie was still alive and asked her lackeys, “Are you trying to get me killed?” What a sad premonition that turned out to be.

This is where a second connection comes in. The nervous Las Vegas exec Duncan Todd (Patrick Fischler) who unhappily follows an unidentified boss’ orders (perhaps the same person as Lorraine’s boss), sees a message pop up as a red square on his computer, which prompts him to retrieve a mysterious envelope marked with a dot from a locked safe. We soon find out that this envelope contains the photos of Lorraine and Dougie. We’ve seen Lorraine’s excruciating fate (really? more women’s violence?) at the hands of The Spike, and it seems that only a bent spike may delay his targeting Cooper in Dougie guise in the near future.

Heads, Hawk Wins

When a buffalo nickel rolls away from Hawk (Michael Horse) in the Sherriff’s station’s men’s room, he follows it into the stall and sees it land face up showing the image of the composite Native American. Heeding the Log Lady’s words that his heritage will lead him to a clue that deals with Agent Cooper, Hawk sees a plate on the stall door for Nez Perce manufacturing, which in turn allows him see that part of the door has lost a screw and is gaping open. Once he pries open the door siding with a crowbar, he pulls out a few small pieces of notepaper that appear to have been hidden there.

The Log Lady’s words have presumably come true, and it’s indicative once again how this show is intricately crafted. It’s no accident that this incident also echoes the flipping of a coin earlier in the episode with the line, “Heads, I win. Tails, you lose”

While trying to find connections in every little scene may not be the point, the show is rewarding viewers just like it rewards Hawk. Without tuning in and being aware of the types of signs he needed, he could very well have missed them.

In this way, the show is nurturing viewers in another sort of awakening, one that allows for being in the moment, but also piecing together clues from the past while speculating about the future. Each episode doesn’t just build off previous ones but almost encourages backtracking to see what may have been missed. It’s a circular viewing experience that truly ties together the 18 episodes.

To make up for missing the last few days, I’ve written up a little ficlet around this HDJ I planned on publishing later:

Fenris becomes very affectionate when he’s drunk, even if there are other people around.

Farren felt Fenris lace his fingers through hers. Her steely blue eyes shot to his in surprise. She smiled when she realized he hadn’t done it consciously. His head swiveled to hers when she squeezed his hand.

“Watcha doin’ under there?” Varric asked slyly. He’d caught her staring and smiling at the elf. Fenris’s hand jerked away from hers and he set it on the table.

“Nothing,” Fenris grumbled.

Although she was disappointed, Farren couldn’t stop smiling. She was sure it was because he’d had a bit too much to drink. It lowered his inhibitions and she rather liked that meant he was more outwardly affectionate toward her. Even if only for a moment.

The further into the drinks they got, the more Fenris lost at Wicked Grace. He was really letting loose, allowing his friends to protect him in a rare moment of inebriation. When she felt his hand on her thigh, squeezing and kneading her flesh, she didn’t make the mistake of drawing notice to it.

After another round that grew her own pot considerably, she pushed back her chair. Fenris’s hand slipped from her leg. “If any of you losers gets any ideas about taking some of my winnings-”

“I will murder you,” Fenris said darkly, taking a casual drink from his tankard.

Holding back a laugh, Farren shrugged. “What he said. Thanks Fen.” She started toward the bar but stopped when she felt Fenris grab her wrist and tug until she turned toward him again.

His thumb feathered back and forth over her pulse. “Anything for you, amatus.” His green eyes were glassy, but adoring.

“I’ll remember that.” She said softly, going to retrieve her drink.

Setting her ale on the table, she turned her chair to sit but instead found herself on Fenris’s lap. His arms squeezed her tight and he rested his chin on her shoulder. “I believe it’s Isabella’s deal?” He said nonchalantly, completely oblivious to the stares from around the table. It was as if he intended to play with her on his lap and that was, in fact, completely normal for him.

“Fen, what are you doing?” Farren asked quietly, resting her hand over his.

“Am I making you uncomfortable?” The concern in his voice made her heart tighten.

“No!” She said quickly. She shifted in his lap to look at him as he pulled his head back. “I’m worried that this will make you uncomfortable in the morning.”

“Uncomfortable having had a beautiful woman on my lap?” He sounded genuinely surprised. Varric laughed at his obvious confusion. Farren shot her friend a glare and he coughed, suddenly taking great interest in his fingernails.

“No. Well, yes. You usually don’t show affection in public.” Farren pointed out, drawing his hand to her lips, kissing the back of his fingers.

Fenris pulled his hand from hers, stroked her cheek and leaned in to whisper in her ear. “That has nothing to do with you, amatus. You deserve someone who shows you the affection you….deserve.” He stuttered slightly at the end, making Farren’s lips curve into a smile.

“Should we leave?” Isabella asked coyly.

Farren bit her lip, glancing around the table. “No, I think perhaps we should.” She looked back at Fenris and found his eyes on her and her alone. “You’re going to regret all this in the morning,” she said to him quietly.

“I will never regret this,” he said quickly. One hand slid down the swell of her backside and squeezed, pulling her tighter against him.

“At least until you see us again.” Varric snorted. Farren shot him another look and he closed his mouth quickly.

“Who knew that tall, dark and broody would be so handsy when he was drunk? I, for one, didn’t see that coming.” Isabella laughed and leaned against the table, watching the two of them. “I think it’s positively adorable.”

“So do I.” Merrill said quietly, unable to hide her grin or twinkling eyes.

“Alcohol has merely lowered my inhibitions, enabling me to give you the attention I always wish to. My desire for affection is not currently overridden by my fear of it. Or fear that lack of it will drive you away from me.” Maker save anyone who dared make fun of him for this in the future.

Sliding off his lap, Farren pulled him up with her. “That will never happen.” Her assurance seemed to give him some relief and he actually smiled. Widely. “Come on, handsy. Let’s get you home.”

He wobbled ever so slightly as they started toward the door. “Your winnings.” He pointed back at the table.

“Don’t you worry about that.” With a laugh, she slid his arm around her shoulder. Both so that he could hold her close and so that she could ensure he remained upright on their walk home.

“Oh yeah,” Varric said, reaching across the table to drag her pile of coins into his. “She’s going home with the best prize of all.”

“Love.” Merrill sighed wistfully.

“A magnificent cock.” Isabella said at exactly the same time.

Fenris looked over his shoulder with a lopsided grin. He tried to wink, but couldn’t manage the gesture and instead simply closed his eyes tightly for a moment. “Both.”
