So far, we’ve taken a look at how the “rivalry” started, and examined it from both sides. But what did the fans of Pet Shop Boys and Erasure think of all this? Did they perpetuate the rivalry in their own fanbases? Was it even possible to be a PSB fan AND an Erasure fan?
Let’s start by answering that last question first: yes, it was totally possible. From the beginning, the two bands’ fanbases have crossed over, with plenty of fans of both. In the newsletters for both bands, fans of one duo often mentioned liking the other–for instance, in the “penpals” sections. This makes sense, as the duos offered many of the same things, which attracted fans who were into these aspects: synth-based pop music, fire-and-ice duos, cute English men, a camp aesthetic, the gay elements of their art, and theatrical stage shows.
From what I’ve been able to find out, their fanbases were mostly friendly to each other in the ‘80s. In fact, in many parts of the world, fans weren’t aware of the “rivalry” between the two bands. They didn’t have access to the magazines, newsletters, and videos that tracked the bands’ comments on each other. In some areas, it wasn’t even easy to find electronic music, which was an underground genre. If you were into that kind of music, you tended to like all the big groups from that genre, Erasure and PSB included.
So how did fans become aware of the “rivalry”? Often, it was through talking with other fans. This was made much easier in the ‘90s, with the new forms of telecommunication that were emerging. In this decade, mailing lists, fansites, and newsgroups were all created for the two bands, allowing fans to chat with each other–and to argue, too. The “rivalry” was indeed perpetuated by fans, and some thought it was also started by them. More on that later.
On media dedicated to Erasure, PSB came up frequently in discussions, as did the reverse. Depending on the platform, the tone of these discussions varied. For instance, on mailing lists, most mentions of the other band tended to be positive or neutral. There was the rare serious argument in favour of one band, but much of the sniping was done in good fun.
The same was true of fansites. One Erasure fansite, Onge’s Erasure Page, put out polls in 2000 and 2003 asking fans what their other favourite bands were; PSB were the second-most popular choice (the first was Depeche Mode). A PSB fansite, Commentary, put out its own survey in 2003 asking about a collaboration between the two bands. While nearly half voted that they shouldn’t collaborate, half voted that they should. The idea of a collaboration between the two groups had long been talked about in their fandoms. It also came up in Erasure’s Private Ear newsletter in 1997. In a joke article titled “The Future of Erasure”, fans gave their ideas as to what the future of the band could look like - including TWO Pet Shop Boys collaborations, one in 2005 and another in 2025.
However, on newsgroups, it was a different story. Mentions of the other band were more likely to be negative, and there were lots more inflammatory comments. Why was this the case? Newsgroups were much more public than mailing lists or websites, making it easier to start arguments. With mailing lists, they were moderated, and people had to sign up with their emails. But they didn’t need to do that with the band-specific newsgroups. Because these were under the “alt” hierarchy, which had no rules and no moderation, all people needed to do was to connect to Usenet and start posting. This made it incredibly easy for people who weren’t fans to post mean comments to a newsgroup based on a particular band.
By the end of the 2000s, the first social media platforms, like Twitter and Facebook, had started to gain traction with the public. People on these platforms have kept the “rivalry” alive by joking, jibing, and posting memes–and still do to this day. There was an interesting discussion about the fans’ side of the rivalry on Facebook, where some people suggested that it started with fans. Most said they liked both bands and they didn’t feel the need to debate who was better.
In the final segment, we’ll examine the denouement in the late 90s and 2000s, looking at the bands’ comments on the “rivalry” and each other after the animosity had died down.

Brad Troemel, "Art," and S...ATVB
As promised, this is the post about Brad Troemel, his work, his connection to Matty, and what this might mean for "Still....At Their Very Best." Research sources, images of the art described, etc will all be included at the end of this post.
Who is Brad Troemel?
He's a NYC based artist in his mid-thirties who makes "post-internet art." He actually got his start RIGHT HERE on this very platform, Tumblr, in 2009.
What is "Post-internet Art"?
post-internet art is art that is made either using the internet or in association with the internet. The idea of it usually comments on or critiques i the effect of internet use on our culture, aesthetics etc.
For example, this statue of Rihanna. Or this conceptual art performance "ART WHORE"
I should point out that according to the scholarship I look at, not all experts agree that this kind of thing counts as "Art."
What kind of art does Brad Troemel make?
Troemel considers his work to be challenging the traditions of art galleries and exhibitions and thinking about how art objects can exist outside these spaces. Like, in normal, everyday life.
For example, he's made a bench out of old Apple computers (see image below) and the MacBook pic that later became a meme (see below).
He started this in 2009 posting photoshopped images on Tumblr. Later, he went on to open an Etsy store which would mail customers the materials and instructions needed to make the art themselves.
In some cases, he deliberately made art pieces that don't last (fall apart, dissolve, or disappear shortly after they are made).
He's quoted as saying that's work is both rejecting traditional rules and trying to imagine what art might look like if those rules didn’t exist. “You can’t make this with a straight face.You’d have to be a real lunatic to do that."
Some of you might recognize a meme he made during election campaigns that was mistaken for a legit ad for Joe Biden (see below). Troemel eventually had to take it down because he was accused of false advertising/ spreading misinformation/ fake news. which....ironically is his whole point about internet culture, lol.
Today, he does a weekly series of cultural commentary posts on instagram.
What does this have to do with The 1975?
Matty announced on instagram that Troemel has co-written and will be co-directing the "Still....At Their Very Best" show.
How do Matty and Troemel know each other?
Matty's been a fan of his for a while and has liked his posts online, followed him on social media, etc.
On the Ion Pack Podcast, Matty spoke about Troemel's work, describing him as "someone who has strong cultural awareness and someone who gets art from the inside and from the outside. Gets it as an artist and as a consumer of art" and someone who "lit the fire and [Matty's] ass. and that he's been using Brad Troemel's language in interviews. the guy is fuckin' goated."
What does this mean for The 1975 and the "S...ATVB" tour?
WELLL...its not entirely clear yet BUT
Matty's current highlight reel titled "SHOW," has posts that are written as if Brad Troemel made them, not Matty. Hint at what the show is gonna be like?
We know that Troemel's style lines up with, and expands on, Matty's. They both present ideas, ask questions that challenge the status quo, and love irony. So, there's likely to be a lot dramatic irony and cultural criticism within the show
Of what? The posts Matty's made so far have been commenting on cultural constructs of masculinity, so, perhaps a continuation of what he started with ATVB?
What's it gonna look like? idk, but Matty's been really leaning into the TRUMAN BLACK/ MATTY HEALY dichotomy. With the lab coat and name tag onstage and in ATPOAIM, with changing his name to "TRUMAN BLACK" on instagram, etc.
Is he going to dramatize that and "play" both characters? himself AND Truman Black? what about the absurdity that they're BOTH him!

I used to really enjoy doing art style memes when I was an artist whose platform was primarily deviantart in the early-mid 2010s. I recently got the hankering to do one again, but I noticed there weren't any for deer artists. So I decided to make one of my own! Deku/Izuku - he plays more chill games, less pvp but it does happen! he gives me dolphin energy (being someone who spends a decent amount on in game purchases but doesnt spend a ton.)
Bakugo/Forgot hero name - he got famous after a clip of him raging went viral. he mostly plays pvp and is usually at the top of games billboards. hes mostly well known for his over the top reactions, hes been banned from many MANY streaming sites for swearing too much and threatening people.
Shoto/Todoroki - Rich kid who is pretty, so hes famous. He started streaming because his older brother let him play a game on stream with him and the chat wanted him to start streaming again. He collaborates with Deku frequently!
Red Riot/Kirishima - He was a rlly sad kid who watched a long time streamer known as Crimson Riot. He is enthusiastic and a rlly good sportsman! He is the only person to have beaten Bakugo on stream, which really kicked him off!
Chargebolt/Kaminari - Hes funny! Thats what really kicked him off, some youtube video called “Chargebolt being my spirit animal for 5 minutes and 10 seconds” by a popular meme channel, and he got many followers. He mostly cries when he loses, and frequently plays with Bakugo, Red Riot, Earphone Jack, Cellophane and Pinky!
Earphone Jack - She started off playing VNs and rpgs, but is surprisingly rlly good at FPS’! She had to ban the word “Egirl” from her chat because she was tired of being called that.
Cellophane - He wears a mask when he streams and is known for being really chill and talking with the chat a lot between games. Type of guy to individually greet everyone in chat.
Pinky - Got famous for her fun personality! She gave the group of Bakugo, Red Riot, Earphone Jack, Chargebolt, Cellophane and her the name “Bakusquad” and her and Kaminari run a channel of highlights from their collab streams, though kaminari does most of the editing.
Tenya/Iida - He isn’t even a streamer, just a famous chat moderator whos a bit too strict. His brother does streaming on the side too, which is how he met Deku, Uravity, Shoto and Froppy.
Uravity - Shes cutesy, smart, and very good at gaming. She gets a lot of annoying dudebros in her chat who she can and will argue with while kicking digital ass.
Froppy - She is well known for sticking to her frog theme, and gets frequent fan mail with frog stuff! She always greets the people in chat and doesn’t play much PvPs, but when she does, she mostly heals.
Shinsou - He has a face cam but its rlly dark in his room, so his face is mostly obscured. Gets called unconventionally attractive all the time. He accidentally gathered a fanbase of “Omg do u get enough sleep at night 🥺🥺🥺” girls and doesn’t have a real streaming schedule. He once accidentally played a game with Chargebolt in it and has never felt peace since.
Creati/Momo - She mostly makes merch designs for other streamers and her art account alias is Creati. She has had every deluxe art brand sponsor her.
Hawks/Keigo - Rich boy whos decent at video games, whale, charming, type of guy to have a mostly teen girl fanbase. Very active on Instagram. Ridiculously high sub count. Surprisingly collabs with the group known as the “League Of Villains” very frequently. Got doxxed a million times by random ass people. He plays all types of games.
Dabi/Touya - Faceless streamer, people like his voice. Guys kinda emo. Worlds most sarcastic streamer ever. Extremely active on twitter. Got canceled for calling his friend gay, had to make a twitter post saying he likes men, also gets doxxed a lot, no thanks to Shoto. Plays mostly PvPs and horror games. In the LOV gamer group, started the discord server.
Toga - Vtuber. She plays violent video games. In the LOV. Sets up VCs for the LOV + occasionally Hawks to play random games together. Also collabs with Deku and Uravity sometimes! She is active well known on Tik Tok as well.
Shigaraki - Most of the time he doesnt even have voice on, and never has face on. He barely ever streams in the first place but when he does it gets either 3 viewers or 300,000.
Mr Compress - Literally just gor famous for pranking LOV members with shitty magic tricks. Sometimes streams with the others. He does the editing for the official LOV youtube account.
BONUS!
Fuyumi has a cooking channel! Dekusquad and Bakusquad both frequently have fake internet fights. Once Hawks accidentally screamed super loud on a stream with Dabi while they were playing FNAF.

So this might seem like a weird ask but I initially followed you due to your Zuki post and have only recently gotten into Pokémon. I’m currently waiting for Pokémon TV app’s rotation schedule to come back around with the Advanced gen (I’ve only see more recent stuff). I have to know, because I’m very confused without context, who the heck is Harley and why is everyone talking about his butt whenever he’s brought up? Feel free to give spoilers on the Advanced gen.
OH MY GOD ANON HI. Thanks for sending this- this is coming pretty soon after I got random hate mail so this is appreciated. But oh boy I don't know how to explain this well.
First off, fellow zuki fan. Wonderful taste!!! Not many of us but gosh, what a good ship.
Second, Harley is May's rival (May is the one in my profile picture). Harley is... something else. He's one of the most unique characters we've ever had, that's for sure. He's flamboyant, he's petty, and he's a cultural icon for Advanced fans. He's funny and just... Harley.
In one frame, he shoves his ass in the camera. Like so. And for whatever reason, in 2020-ish if I recall, it became a meme. It died out for a bit, but stayed around and I decided that every friday I would make a new meme or art piece for it, and so... here we are, many fridays later. This phenomenon is known as Harley's Ass Friday.

"Dacă după imaginea de mai sus te întrebi „Tocmai am văzut o memă despre Dracula, romanul lui Bram Stoker?”, răspunsul este da. Dar nu e atât de importantă gluma, cât mini-trendul online care a dat naștere unei noi comunități.
Pe Tumblr, rețeaua care e din nou pe val, Dracula este pe primul loc în trending, după ce romanul a fost redistribuit sub forma unui newsletter, Dracula Daily.
Cum funcționează? Romanul este structurat sub forma unor scrisori sau povestiri din jurnal, fiecare redactate în date diferite, cum s-ar întâmpla în viața reală. Tu primești pe mail fragmentul de roman care are loc în ziua respectivă.
De exemplu, povestea începe pe 3 mai, când Jonathan Harker, personajul principal, scrie despre cum călătorește spre Transilvania, unde îl așteaptă misteriosul lui angajator, contele Dracula. Și despre rețetele pentru papricaș sau vinete umplute de care vrea să facă rost. Pe 3 mai, tu primești pe mail acea primă pagină de jurnal.
Pe 6 mai, în carte nu se întâmplă nimic, deci nu primești nimic. Și tot așa până termini de citit romanul.
Se pare că asta a fost formula câștigătoare pentru mulți cititori care acum au devenit fani Dracula. Doar pe Tumblr sunt abonați 21.000 de oameni la tagul #draculadaily. Și, ca în orice comunitate de fani, ai: meme-uri, fan art, analize literare, critici (unele și despre reprezentarea stereotipică a Transilvaniei) și alte recomandări de lectură (sau filme) care să completeze experiența.
Aici poți citi toate edițiile de până acum. Newsletterul va continua până în noiembrie, deci dacă vrei să citești (sau recitești) romanul clasic, acum e momentul.

It's not That bad dar tot mi se pare că e pus într-o lumină bună de endorsement. Poate sunt prea sensibilă la Dracula stuff totuși, nu zic nu.
Nu stiu nici eu cat de sensibila sunt la carte/personaj. Filmul (cel cu Gary Oldman) mi-a placut si nu o sa neg asta niciodata. Daaaar Dracula is not a personality trait which would ever define any of us. Non-Romanians should stop shoving down our throats.

Your name is AXEL ROSEAH and you HATE that your father named you after some OLD MUSICIAN, mostly because you DON'T LIKE MUSIC. Thankfully, there happens to be a vintage VIDEO GAME CHARACTER who is also named Axel, so you tend to tell people you were named for him instead. This causes NO END OF ANNOYANCE to your FATHER, but you view that as an added bonus. Messing with the GENERAL is somewhat of a hobby after eighteen years.
Speaking of HOBBIES, yours mostly pertain to OUTDATED SHIT. You're a big fan of OLD GAMES and OLDER MEMES, as well as ANCIENT RELIGIONS. Even your Pesterchum handle, anKing, is a reference NOBODY GETS ANYMORE. Aside from your SWEET GAMING RIG, your room is taken up almost entirely by BOOKSHELVES, which are filled with religious and mythological texts. Many of them are ORIGINAL PRINTINGS, thanks to the General's MANY CONNECTIONS, as well as his high-capacity CREDIT CARD, which you swiped a clone of years ago. You even have a page from the GUTENBERG BIBLE that you found at a pawn shop.
Today is a VERY SPECIAL DAY, because one of your girlfriends is TURNING EIGHTEEN, and you got her what you consider to be an AMAZING GIFT. She's absolutely in love with the idea of LARPING, but due to her DISABILITIES, she's never gotten out of the house to actually do it. Before your BACK INJURY, you were a BIG FAN of it yourself, so you're hoping that this NEW GAME lives up to all the hype.
Your rig is, of course, state-of-the-art. You can't stand wetsuits, and shunt tech is still a few years away even within the military, but you found a nice work-around using wired neural feedback patches, colloquially known as an N-Patch. They're basically EKG stickers on crack; they take data from the game and use electrical impulses to manipulate your sensory cortexes into feeling, smelling, and even tasting if you're into that sort of thing (which you totally are). You don't like to think about how much the setup cost, but the General is rich enough that you don't actually give a shit. It pays to have access to a black budget with zero oversight; there's nobody who outranks your father, nor has higher security clearance, so there's really not anyone to oversee the funds. The General doesn't even bother to check the statements on his personal card; it's all handled automatically by his account at the treasury, and he's on duty so often that he wouldn't remember whether or not you'd owned any given thing before he left. Asshole.
Anyways, it's time to get cracking on the birthday gift. You open up your computer, log into Pesterchum, and proceed to have these two conversations that we've seen already.
Sitting alone in your room cackling to yourself over an 80-year-old meme is exactly why people think you're a tool, but man, that was so worth it. You're really glad you programmed that raspberry function into Pesterchum. After a few more moments of laughing alone, and kind of lamenting that you haven't got a salad, you open Pesterchum back up and ping your frenemy.

You don't know which you hate more: the fact that Kite's got a bigger dick than you, or the fact that you know she's got a bigger dick than you. Gods-damned no good razzle-frazzin alcohol. After a few moments of thinking, you settle for hating Kite in general. Yeah, that’ll teach her.
Chac Chel’s spotted ears, you really hope this isn’t turning into some blackrom shit.
Whatever. Time to get this game on lockdown. Grabbing up your VR set, you start sticking N-Patches all over your body, choosing to forgo the one for your tongue this time - you don’t think you’ll need to know what a shale imp tastes like - and boot the initialization file. While it instals, you take some time to flip through The Lesser Key of Solomon. After about an hour, a pop-up asks you to set your fetch modus and arm your strife specibus. Scrolling through the modus options, you eventually land on Ouija, which catches your attention. In the comic, Aradia used it to have the spirits of the damned pick her items for her. You wonder how the game handles it, and there’s only one way to find out, so you select it for now.
Switching over to the strife specibus selector, you’re greeted with a fancy HUD showing various objects in your room with colour-coordinated outlines, highlighting how useful any given thing would be for use as a weapon. Unsurprisingly, your copies of The Key of Solomon and Tripus Aureus are tinted black for “use at own risk”, and a few of your other books are labelled “hazardous”. The only things that are a safe blue are your Swiss army knife (which you mostly use for the nail file) and your cane. Since you’ve actually trained - at the General’s insistence - in hapkido and bartitsu, it’s a pretty clear choice. You pick up your cane, a nice Lebombo piece from the General’s trip to Madagascar, and confirm your selection on the HUD. After a few seconds, a small card appears with the outline of a cane and the label “canekind”, and a stack of five blank squares spread out across the bottom of the display, next to the image of your ouija modus. These must be your captcha cards.
Deciding to give it a whirl before you launch the main client and get into some serious gameplay, you pick up your Swiss army knife and one of the cards glows. The knife disappears from the HUD, and your first blank card flashes with a ghostly image of it before disappearing into the ouija logo. Sure is fancy of them to have the game make it look like the knife has actually been-
Wait a second. You heft your hand, and feel a distinct lack of weight. You close your fingers around the knife you should be holding, and feel nothing but air.

How to create a Tumblr account?
Go to Tumblr on your web browser.
Sign in with your mail id.
Choose a username and sign up.
Fill in the age column and tick to agree to the Terms of Service.
Select 5 blogs of your interest to follow and click See it.
Your dashboard appears with posts from the topics/people you followed.
Now you can create and post your blogs, images, videos and other content on Tumblr.
How to create a blog on Tumblr?
Back in your dashboard there’s a panel that lists out all various content types, including text, photo, quotation, link, chat, audio, and video. Select it by clicking.
As per your chosen type of content, contextualized options are provided. For example, if you chose a video, you can either upload it on your own or link a video from other platforms.
You can also create your blog by typing your content. Images, video, audio, and links, can be added to it.
Tags cans be added to your post to gain better reach and traffic.
Once you click Post, the blog will be posted and will appear on your dashboard. If needed the blogs can be edited and deleted.
