note: happy birthday fishman. please just come home already. i want to poke this cutie a lot.
you stare in disbelief at the pile of plushies in your hands, then at the empty ever-rotating crane game machine, then finally at the half-fish half-man who you get the pleasure of calling employer and boyfriend.
"...how?" you ask, still dumbfounded.
rafayel—who casually keeps a finger gun pose shamelessly in the middle of a public arcade—smirks even wider, "who do you think you are talking to?"
"someone who always misses the plushies," you answer quickly without a missing beat, before adding an afterthought, "usually. on every turn."
this response immediately makes him drop the finger gun away from his chin. changing it into a childish (and very adorable) hands on the hips pose. as animated as his gestures are, his face morphs into a pout, "hey. that's just me holding back so this place could still have a business."
"..." you doubt it, really.
"what does that face mean?" rafayel's eyebrows frown even further—which serves as enough warning that you probably should start giving him praises or you will have another spiel of how "you don't love him and even the jellyfishes that eat grass agrees with that". no one wants a repeat of that.
and also, you love him enough to think a preening smug rafayel is better than a pouting annoyed one.
"it means—" you poorly try to hide your smile, "—that i am very thankful that a really handsome guy gets me all of this. so much that i couldn't believe it."
predictably, the air around rafayel soon matches a peacock more than a fish. "hmph! good!" he says, in a manner that sounds like he will demand some spoiling the moment the two of you get home. or so you think, before he opens his mouth again and eyes the other machine a few steps behind you, "why don't you let this handsome guy get another round of plushies for you then?"
(five minutes and eight rounds later, the plushies in that other machine remain untouched.)

It's brutal news, especially with Primo having been his biggest anchor since his very first days in the Ministry.
Dewdrop's words will stick - as the head of security, he should have known, should have done something, should have stuck with them every single minute just in case, he thinks.
Doesn't matter that the very top of the Church made sure no word got out until the deed was done. Made sure nobody who would try to stop things would be around.
Also, ever wondered why Dewdrop's horn fell off on-stage one time? Yeah, that's why :]
It held on a while but had to break eventually after sustaining so much damage and suffering Dewdrop's headbanging and jumping around during shows.

Before City in Silver, I had decided the third act of Orsinio's character arc would involve the Great Game, and the Scheme of the Phoenix was a nice surprise and fitting opportunity to explore his morally grey facets. The liberation ending once again has me thinking about his relationship with the nocturnal powers, as well as the parallels between his character arc and the Halved.
The King Who Wars
Orsinio is temperamental and quick to react. He can be short-sighted and make choices to benefit his immediate loved ones or goals above a greater good. His revolutionary tendencies come from not only a desire for a better world, but wanting to see punishment for the wrongdoings of the kings. Direct action.
The King Who Speaks
Horatio was levelheaded and cool, never revealing his hand. In great game negotiations, he was a pragmatic and expert diplomat. Patient and calculating, meticulously compiling paper trails, able to diffuse situations with words alone. Setting up schemes and watching a gradual yet inexorable result.
The Halved
Only one is still here to carry on the work. Orsinio used to wonder what his brother would have done, but he's long made peace with the fact he's on his own. Stepping out of Horatio's shadow. Calling the shots. Orsinio is all raw emotions. The knife is in his hand, not an agent's. Horatio never got his hands dirty.
The Tower
Now Orsinio is confronted with a choice that places the weight of the world in his hands. Knowledge is a heavy burden. He can walk away and let the intrigues play out of their own accord, or he can take an active role.
The White
Still he hesitates. Beating the high powers at their own game will have disastrous consequences, but wouldn't it be cathartic? The tension in the world is going to reach a boiling point with or without his intervention on the board, and here's an opportunity to show the Old Man in Vienna he's a rival to be reckoned with.
The liberationist nemesis player's philosophy. "I draw the line at assassinating someone's loved one for personal gain, but inciting global chaos is fine."
The Black
Nor is Orsinio alone. He is not acquainted with the Anchoress. The Black has No avatar in Parabola, unlike the Beleaguered King or Red-Handed Queen. Orsinio steps up to the role on the chessboard. He's acting on behalf of not only himself. (And who's to say his interests are always completely his own?) No knight for no king.
Cry 'havoc!' and let slip the dogs of war
The wrench in the system. The well placed bomb. The world turned on its head by a storyteller. Liberation.
Sequestered in his office, papers scattered on his desk. His briefcase may as well contain a ticking time bomb. Orsinio senses No One behind him, placing a firm grasp on his shoulder, covering his eyes, whispering in his mind, Do it.
Alea iacta est.
Orsinio doesn't move his hand to tip the scales.

“You excited for your date tonight?”
Richie dragged his eyes away from Eddie's reflection and forced himself across the room to dry his hands.
Eddie's words, quiet and hesitant, followed him.
“Uh, yeah, Rich, about that…could we maybe talk for a sec—”
“I am proud of you for putting yourself out there, dude,” Richie interrupted, tone frantic. He winced but continued, “You deserve to be happy. Maybe Rick will be Mr. Right, or maybe he won’t, but you won’t know until you try.”
He could tell Eddie was frowning now, even though he had his back to him.
Quieter still and almost but not quite lost under the roar of the hand dryer, he asked, probably the worst thing Richie had heard in quite a while.
“You really think I should give it a shot with Rick?”
His heart clenched painfully.
There were two ways he could go about this—either be a good friend and support Eddie in his new romantic venture or be a bad friend and confess his lifelong, pathetic, undying yet unrequited love right there next to the soap dispenser and what he really hoped was a not-too-nefarious stain.
And like every cliché Hollywood movie, good triumphed over bad.
“Uh-huh. Sure,” he nodded vigorously and shrugged, his back still to him. "He's gonna love you, man. I—we all do. So, to paraphrase the best guy I know—you're Eddie Kaspbrak. That's enough. So. Go be Eddie."
