Hob is retired. Yes, he's a little young to have retired, but he lost Eleanor and had Robin to take care of, so he decided to get out of the mob game.
He didn't want Robin to brought up in the life. So he let the smartest of his people (Matthew, Lucienne, Cori......let's be honest, Joanna) buy him out and he took Robin and left the area.
All this is so say, he's out. He has fucking goats and sheep (*sigh* Robin likes the sheep, he has to get permission from his kid to shear them. How the mighty have fallen!) He's not busting heads or shooting people in the f'ing face anymore; he's teaching high school; Robin is thriving; and Hob is flirting with the very cute (mysterious) art teacher, Dream.
Everything is good. Hob is keeping his head down and suppressing his more stabby impulses. Then someone HURTS Dream.
Dream won't tell him who or why, but Hob is patient. He will find out,,,and he will rain terror on those who hurt his Dream. /He also may use it opportunisticly to have Dream move in to the farm.
Hob knows he looks good chopping the wood for the fireplace,,, with his shirt off (okay, okay, with a very tight short sleeve shirt on.)
AJAJSSJAH ex mob Hob is wonderful, I love him, and I need him to stab everyone who has ever hurt Dream in alphabetical order.
Imagine the shenanigans. Hob has just finished taking out a hit on one of the people who hurt his Dream, and this one got messy. Hob has only just finished disposing of the body when Dream comes knocking at the door! So Hob has to desperately hide the knife he just used to gut the guy like a fish, and strip himself out of his bloody shirt. He answers the door with no shirt on and he can't even appreciate the fact that Dream is definitely looking 👀 because he's worried that his secret is about to be discovered! In reality Dream is just there with his little suitcase ready to move in to Hob’s place because now he's terrified that the people who kidnapped him all those years ago are after him again. He's not to know that they're all dead now!
Dream is such a lovely house guest. He delivers AND picks Robin up from school when Hob is busy on the farm (shooting the guys who used to work for Burgess in the face). He cooks! He can only make mac and cheese but Robin loves mac and cheese! It's perfect! He even leans in the doorway of Hob’s farmhouse and watches Hob chopping wood while wearing one of his cute white undershirts (which has some quite suspicious red/brown stains on it but pfffft Dream isn't looking at THAT).
But Dream isn't stupid - he knows that Hob is more than just a farmer and a high-school teacher. He also knows that all his enemies have mysteriously disappeared. He can't help but link those two things together. Especially when he knows that Hob is absolutely DEADLY with an axe.
So he tells himself when he sinks down to his knees and mouths Hob’s cock through his underwear - its just a one time thing. He's just saying thank you. Hob deserves a little TLC.
Needless to say. It's not a one time thing. And Dream doesn't seem to be planning to move out of Hob’s place any time soon. Well, it wouldn't be fair now Robin is so attached to him! And it's fair to say that Hob fucks with just as much skill as he uses to hurt the people who hurt his darling.

I've had a wonderful 4 days in Dayton, Ohio. Two nights of Guided By Voices for their 40th year together, great bands like Kiwi Jr. and Built to Spill opening for them, and then just a lotta kind, friendly welcoming folks sharing their community and the love of music.
I was going to skip the final event at WINGS Sportsbar today but former GBV manager, and all around genuinely kind and fantastic person Rich Turiel (who we are lucky enough to have as fan and supporter of DECK), told me I oughta make time for it. Well he was right because I was able to meet Bob Pollard before I had to run out to the airport. Rich accompanied me to say hi and told Bob that I was the guy who wrote that book, Astral Weeks. To my surprise, Bob said, "you wrote that book? You're that guy?!" putting his arm around me said, "I read it twice."
I thought he was just being polite but then he said, "what's the name of that hill where the cult lives?" I said, "Fort Hill?" Bob said, "yeah that's right. Man I shoulda brought my book for you to sign." Now, at this point, I'm in a fair amount of shock. This guy is a hero of mine. His music is so great and his story is so inspirational, well...it's certainly had a *huge* effect on me, to say the least. So then I tell him that a certain musician from the book was furious about it when it was published. I'll skip names here. He goes, "Fuck _____. Their music sucks. You should name you next book, ______ MUST DIE." haha. Then he expanded on it and said each chapter should be about a terrible musician with each chapter being a name and then MUST DIE. It sounds dark, sure, but I was laughing my ass off. This is his sense of humor. It was super funny. The other names he suggested for other chapters? I won't say, but it's was f'ing hilarious.
It went on for, like, five minutes. We talked about Jonathan Richman, Velvet Underground, and then Rich took this photo. Bob said, "We gotta be shaking hands for the photo. Great book." I told him I would certainly mail him a signed copy of the book and he said, "Yes but would you do me a favor. Would you write in the inscription _____ MUST DIE?" More rolling laughter. Perfect end to the trip.
Rich Turiel, thank you for orchestrating that moment. I'll never forget it!
Headed back to Boston. Recording more DECK tomorrow. Don't stop now! :) <3

Dear journal,
Well, apparently the guide to Moonrise was a f'ing SPIDER so that's that. Fricking weird land...
So of course we took the first chance we got to eliminate it, which appeared to be an ambush on our way to the tours. I hate spiders... ew....
And the ambushers were actually Harpers! Yes, the legendary secret spies! They managed to survive in a protected inn, the Last Light. We are heading there right now, to talk with the High Harper and plan our trip to Moonrise.
Astarion judiciously pointed out that a face well presented could open many doors, and suggested that we change our outfits to match our True Soul status and show strenght. He is not wrong, this could probably help us navigate Moonrise when we get there. I am a bit jealous of the one he picked, a light grey and silver armor revealing his perfect muscles and matching the color of his curls. He is definitely making many heads turn, including mine. I need to find a more flamboyant outfit for myself...
But it is nice to be able to witness such devastating beauty, a rare and welcomed luxury in these dark lands...

When you say “no one is actively hurting each other”
How do you KNOW? Like how do any of us KNOW for sure they are a perfect couple that has never hurt each other and are equally in love and committed and will be together forever?
None of us can know any of that. We don’t even KNOW if they are real. If you claim to KNOW despite what may happen in the future, that’s a cult. You’re not dealing with reality if you have pre-determined everything that will happen.
Because I don't see anyone actively hurting anyone based on what I see, hear or read. It's a bloody observation not fact.
Also, I know I can't see the f'ing future, but I can make rational assumptions based on what's in front of me.
It's not cult dear it's called using common sense. Something you may want to use some in the future before you come on to my blog and bitch about stuff.
Also, I don't profess to know diddly squat about anything and all I can refer to (in fact all any of us can do), is state things we believe based on what we see, hear and read. Something perhaps you did very little of when coming to my blog. BTW that was an observation, based on what little I know about you, not a FACT.

The Failures of Plural Representation
Tw: mental health, abuse, torture, plural vilification, neurotypical shit.
My dad... (I don't want to say 'made me') invited me to watch The Lord of the Rings from a very young age. You know, like any good gen X parent would. And of course I fell in love with it! I was raised a nerd after all.
My favorite scene ofc has to be the part when Eowyn goes all Mulan and bitch slaps the Witch King to death saying "I am no man. I'm a woman!".
For a long time these movies became the gold standard for what good story telling looked liked. It sparked my passion for storytelling, cinema and writing.
Recently I've been rewatching the trilogy, the extended versions on HBO. And I hadn't watched them in so long, they felt like new and yet... they felt like home.
There aren't many things that have made me feel like home ever since I left my body...
But tonight I finished watching the two towers.
Began with a vat full of mousse cake and my wife by my side!
Finished sad... with a bad taste in my mouth that won't leave.
(No, it wasn't the mousse. My Alesha could never make anything that wasn't perfect)
And it's funny. Bc I remember that on the original cut that my dad and I rented from a Block Buster, the story of Smeagol seemed so sad to me.
But what I just saw was far from sad, it was cruel!
And not like some dramatic tragedy or anything like that!
It was a joke!
Smeagol was a joke!
His pain was just some passing slapstick! Sauron tortures him! The humans too! Sam harrasses him! And Frodo betrays him!

"There's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it's worth fighting for."

Yes, obviously. He is a flawed character. Just like almost everyone in the movies.
But you just don't see Boromir getting the same treatment. No, he gets the bitter-sweet flashback with his brother.
And Smeagol proves to get better and get rid of his toxic counterpart and be happy again! (100 times the strength any soldier has ever had in my experience) But still... No.
He's still just a freak.
The creature Gollum.
But alright. So J. R. R. Tolkien sucks at mental health representation. I don't think that's such a hot take if I know the internet.
But here's the catch:
It is worth remembering.
Cuz history has a funny way of tripping you over and kicking you in the gut for the bad memory of others.

And that's why I'm currently mad enough to write a Tumblr blog at 4 in the morning. Bc popular media seems to mostly just show pural folks as monsters and not people you can empathize with!
And that's fucking scary bc, guess what?
We don't want to be treated like fucking monsters!

It's just... I sometimes forget how scary it can be.
To think that you can't be who you are in public because people will look at you... and see nothing less than a creature.
I didn't choose to be this way, and yet I'm trying to love myself for what I am...
And then you look at me and... What? Do I matter so little? Do you see me as lesser? ... Am I not even a person? ... Is it even a crime to harm me?
Fuck...

It's not all bad news though.
Maybe as part of the recent trend towards mental health acceptance, or maybe just bc of some rando guardian angel writer. or just for the f'ing lols, we're starting to see for the first time the representation of characters with multiple personalities that is not only accurate and sensible, but also effective and heartfelt from a storytelling pov.
I didn't finish Moon Knight, but for what I saw it gives me great hope that this will become the standard for talking abt multiple personalities on popular media from now on... bc that would honestly get rid of so much my daily stress.

I just want a family at the end of the day.
I want a stable job, I want my own small business, I want a house for my wife, and I want a child that feels free to become whatever the want to, and need to be. And I want heroes they can look up to.
Bc I'm running out of mine...
I'm really sad I have to leave this part of my childhood behind.
I could start trying to split hairs and defend the movie as something far away from Tolkien's nastyness... but something tells me that it's just not gonna be the same ever again.
I'm not gonna stop my rewatch or ban TLOTR from my home. They're still cool movies. It's just that the same enjoyment is no longer there. And I just don't feel like indoctrinating my family to these movies just like I was, even if some of their lessons are important.
For that I have Moon Girl and Devi Dinosaur!

3PSD (3rd Party SKIP JACK Deprecation) and the new horizon of "TI" or Tuna Intelligence.
Well my Tuna Crew, looks like the media gods have smiled upon us. A longstanding and trusted albacore informant, told me that some small media company named GOOGLE is going to start phasing out Skipjack. They will start with 1% as a test in 2024, with full deprecation planned by 2025.
Obviously, this is GREAT news for us. I was able to catch up with Sundar, CEO of this small start up, and was able to get the inside-scoop:
"We are a tuna-centric company".
SUNDAR: "We believe a users tuna, is their tuna. They should be able to eat tuna around the world without the worry of skipjack following them around. We also believe in ethical tuna, meaning we cannot risk skipjack breaches and the integrity of a someones personal tuna".
ABOUT. DAMN. TIME. AmIright?!
I am not entirely sure what this company does, but I know they work with "electricity". I asked how they plan to do this, so it may get a bit in the kelp-weeds for those not familiar with "electricity":
SUNDAR: "First, every Tuna Boat out there needs to ensure a 1st Party Tuna strategy. This includes getting the tuna, a place to store their tuna, and move their tuna to their mouth without the risk of skipjack entering the mix. Next, they have to get their Tuna working for them. Meaning, they need to enrich the tuna with something they recognize to so they can consume it. In this case, we developed the "tID" or TUNA ID. Every shred of tuna can be joined to this ID so that we know, there is no 3rd Party Skip Jack in it. Once this "enriched tuna" is available - we can consume it in a scaleable, tuna-centric way."

I got offended at this point. To think that me, a CREATIVE TUNA CAPTAIN could be overtaken by an "electric" robot, pissed me right off. So I wanted to know if he REALLY thought this robot could be better than me, a professional of over 143 years (NO CHANCE FOOL).
SUNDAR: "Well, TI is learning constantly, 24 hours a day, from EVERY tuna captain in the world - its called LTM, or Large Tuna Model. Basically, if you are in the sea or at land, our LTM is learning from you since everyone opted into breathing air when they were born. This large corpus and speed of learning is unprecedented. If it is not better than you yet, it will be one day. But DON'T WORRY. TI is not going to replace sea captains, it is going to allow you to focus on making bigger impact that only humans can do - Like curating Tuna Juice Cocktails (TJC's).
WHAT IS THIS HORSE SHIT!
Look. I am all for 3PTD. That shit needed to happen like, yester-year. But now we are going a bit far with this TI. Like, do you REALLY think I can bring more "value" by automating out my sea captain duties? Well, the answer is NO. I cannot bring more value to the world. I am entirely un-valuable if you take away my sea captain duties that took 143 years, a ouiji board, and a sacred heiroglphyic portal to ACQUIRE. I don't care how people "optimize" getting their tuna - I CARE FOR THE ART OF THE TUNA...... AND MONEY. You see, I live in the REAL WORLD. Not Freaky-Deaky electric land. Tuna and Sea Captains are ONE. There is kinmanship between man-and-beast. It is this sacred respect, that "enriches the tuna" as these fools, like to call it.
Well my crew. Today was an amazing day in the advancement of Tuna. I salute this "electric" company for FINALLY DEPRECATING ALL SKIPJACK
"TI"... I am cautiously optimistic. But if it ever gets remotely close to stepping on my grizzled sea captain wallet, I will IMMEDIATELY take out the batteries of this "robot" and use its head to make tuna cans. HOW WOULD THAT BE FOR "ENRICHMENT", FOOLS.

Hob would like to say that this was all because he lost a bet. Yes, he is aware that many of his stories start with him losing a bet. (Shut up!)
Still. He. Lost. A. Bet......to f'ing Constantine. And because the bet was with Joanna, and because he lost by being wrong about something (it doesn’t matter what) in his field of study -- the severity of what he has to do matches being shown up by a Constantine -- Now that all that is clear.
What?! Oh, right. So Hob needs to pole dance as his act for the faculty talent show fundraiser. Yes, Hob is aware he's never even attempted pole dancing before,,,,, and yes, he might be a little (A LITTLE) uncoordinated. (Shut Up!)
So obviously he needs a teacher, who can get him ready in 3 months. By sheer serendipity, Hob sees an ad in the campus newspaper for pole dancing classes taught by an "M". Hob is willing to pay (honestly through the absolute nose) to someone willing to help him show up Constantine. M agrees to meet Hob at an off campus coffee shop to discuss private lessons.
Hob is nervous. He knows it's silly what he's trying to do. He doesn't want M to think Hob is being at all disrespectful. He just needs some training. And then this beautiful man walks into the coffee shop and Hob forgets that he was waiting for someone. (SHUT UP!)
Dream is intrigued when Hob calls him and agrees to meet to discuss if he would be willing to help Hob fulfill his forefit. Dream understands losing a bet.

This is definitely the kind of bet that Hob would get himself into.
Poor Hob is immediately discouraged when he sees Dream’s incredible lean, petite physique. Of course a guy like that is going to be able spin around in the air like it's nothing. Hob just feels like he's going to be so clumsy and he'll make a total fool of himself in front of Dream AND everyone else.
But Dream shows him a few videos of guys who have a body type more like Hob’s, and he feels a tiny bit more confident. It's not like he needs to become an expert, he just needs to perfect a simple routine. And Dream is a tough teacher. He's got Hob coming in to his home studio twice every week to practice. His voice makes Hob weak at the knees (NOT convenient when he's trying to spin around a pole!) and Hob is totally wishing that this beautiful man would just dom him for real. Every night in the shower he helplessly fingers himself, imagining that it's Dream giving him the orders...
Fortunately Dream’s teaching also pays off and Hob becomes quite comfortable with his routine. Dream even comes shopping with him to find the perfect outfit to perform in! He nearly cums in the dressing room as he's trying on all these revealing semi lingerie type outfits while Dream waits outside and critiques each one.
Dream seems determined that Hob should not only perform well but actually WIN the talent show. Which is presumably why he turns up and sits in the front row... and mouths "Good boy." at Hob when he finishes his routine flawlessly.
And since he's not Hob’s teacher anymore, there's no reason why he can't go back stage and jerk Hob off through the silky fabric of his nearly see-through bodysuit. Good boys get rewards...

Saw this on my feed this morning.
And that's Very True.... Personally, I don't have a problem with it... So long as they keep making everything they do look like it's under a layer of cling wrap.
Some additional thoughts in relation to AI Artwork from a Painter.
I have been painting Professionally since 2001. around 10 years of schooling and getting it together before that. So Yeah, been at it for a while. Also have a couple of degrees in my back pocket and know the art world, and how the actual world we all live in works. I have a pretty good bead on it.
Here's the lay of the land as I see it.
First I have a certain affection for certain parts of various paintings I have painted over the years (decades now, Geeze-Lousie!) 'Say, I like this about that. Gee That worked really well, I'll have to remember that move, that technique' etc etc.
But these Are Not my Children. Look, I wouldn't sell my Children! They are not my babies! I mean, not really if I'm honest. I never painted them to be. That wasn't / isn't their job (for me)
But rather I want whomever purchases, or acquires them, to feel that they are their babies! Heck they spoke to them. They made that special connection, the one between Art and the observer.
If I listened to all the 'Art speaking to me' in here (my studio, my head) I'd go insane! It's an F'ing MadHouse in here!
Anyhow as far as AI goes, all it is, is just pretty regurgitation, I mean literally, it is. That's all. I mean yeah, you could probably survive on it, but would you really want to?
Look I can pretty much confidently say, that for all of the people who have bought my art, yes they dig the paintings, of course. It spoke to them. But they also dig that I was able to make that happen for them, as a painter, an artist.
Am I worried about losing a sale to an AI image? No. I am not. I have done this long enough to know, that anyone who would prefer to hang that over the piano as opposed to a Real, human-created painting isn't someone I was going to sell to anyhow. They were not at a place, intellectually, spiritually, whatever you want to call it, to take that ride.
When Warhol started painting color-splotches and splashes, backgrounds and highlights on silkscreens did the masses run out and start buying just screenprint images for that perfect place in their perfect pad? No! No one gave 2 shits about the screenprint. If they did, don't you think ole Andy would have made sure all those copies were a little more cleaned up? He really wasn't one to leave money on the table.
His collectors dug what he had created. You take ole' Andy out of that equation... well it just doesn't work.
I was with my wife at IKEA a bit back and they were selling a $35 Audrey Hepburn silk screen print. Why would someone buy one of my more expensive paintings of Audrey when they could just buy that? And look I absolutely think if that's what they want that's what they should buy. But the reason that folks have bought mine, is that there is just something about it, that they needed. It's hard to explain it to someone who has never had that connection yet. There's just something about it.
And that's simply what AI can't copy. I honestly doubt if it ever will be able to understand that, let alone reproduce it.
When I go to the symphony and hear a symphony knocking out Beethoven's 9th. I tear up. It speaks to me. That doesn't happen for me, when I listen to a recording. Even if it's a recording of the same symphony, same performance. Is that the same for everybody? Probably not, but boy am I glad that it's that way for me. That I can have that connection. I get that not everyone can, and I feel sad for those who cannot.
So yeah, anyhow, are Fine Artists worried about the AI-Generated art revolution? None that I know are. And neither am I.
However, if I were a Graphic Designer and made my living doing that, yeah I would be. Absolutely.

I never want to have to research anything again. I want to have instant understanding of any topic that is even tangentially related to what I'm writing about.
Perfect recall of what I've already written in other fics or in previous chapters of this fic. No more ctrl+F'ing the entire work on AO3 just to see if I've already used this phrase, or if a certain word had a connotation in an earlier chapter that would change the meaning of what I want to say now. I want to instantly know what backstory I've already set in stone versus what I've merely hinted at and can expand!
