Juno spacecraft photographs Io

This week, NASA's Juno spacecraft made its closest approach yet to Jupiter's volcanic moon Io, coming to within 7,270 miles (11,700 kilometers) of its surface - that's more than 3× closer than some weather satellites orbit Earth.

Finally, this series shows Juno approaching Io, pivoting, then zooming away.

"My siblings? Please don't ask about them. That was a long time ago, but some wounds are not so easily healed."

NASA's solar-powered spacecraft to fly by Jupiter's fiery moon Io on July 30

NASA's Juno mission is gearing up to fly by Jupiter's fiery moon Io on Sunday, July 30. The solar-powered spacecraft will come within 13,700 miles (22,000 kilometres) of the Jovian moon, making its closest approach yet.

The close encounter is expected to provide a wealth of information on the hundreds of erupting volcanoes pouring out molten lava and sulfurous gases all over the volcano-festooned moon.

"As we get closer with each flyby, JIRAM and other instruments aboard Juno add to our library of data on the moon, allowing us to not only better resolve surface features but understand how they change over time," said Juno Principal Investigator Scott Bolton of the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio.

Io is known for its extreme volcanic activity. During the last flyby of the volcanic Jovian moon, which occurred May 16, the spacecraft's JunoCam imager took a picture from 22,100 miles (35,600 kilometers) showing a smudge at the moon's Volund region, near the equator. Such smudges are smoking guns to planetary scientists.  ...

Strange, the way grief turns one into a shadow. Io steps into a room and the occupants move around her, pressing in close to the walls; space enough for her and the dead, she supposes. If they look at her at all, it is with an insufferable, simpering pity, and every exchange of words ends the same: I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry. The performative prayer, always a whisper, as if speaking it any louder might disrupt death. Even the knights manning the lower floor of the Congregation pay her no mind as she enters. Only Handeloup, the most gentle of soldiers, spares a quick glance, but his face tells her even a greeting would require more delicacy than he has to spare today. He nods solemnly and turns back to the stack of documents sprawled across the table in front of him. No matter. She is not here to talk–she came to hide.
