some of my tgcf headcanons:
1. pei ming is bisexual
we’ve seen him with yushi huang and we’ve seen him with shi wu du...need i say more
2. yushi huang is a panromantic ace
because i said so 😏 ok but fr she just gives me those vibes. also i absolutely ADORE her so im lowkey projecting my asexuality onto her lmaoo
also pei ming and yushi huang bi/pan solidarity we love to see it
3. ling wen is an aroace
ok to preface this...i did not hc her as aroace because she’s cold and distant (i feel like thats kind of a harmful stereotype for aroace people? but i digress). more like, i just can’t see her in any romantic or sexual relationship with anyone, and i similarly can’t see her attracted to anyone in that way. that said, i think her friendship with bai jing is kinda sweet :) i mean yes she did murder him but what about it
4. feng xin gives mu qing hand kisses
KITH.........also mu qing blushing and getting flustered sdkfjskd
5. pei “ho ho” ming is a lil shit who helps all the side ships get together post-canon
i just know he would & that is why he is one of my favorite characters
6. quan yizhen accidently does the kabedon whenever he wants to kiss yin yu
thats it. thats the tweet
7. beefleaf opens up a restaurant/bakery together
because he xuan has a big appetite and i feel like shi qingxuan would be a good baker and cook

tgcf ships + my opinion
since this is just a long post of all the ships and my opinions regarding them, im putting it all under the cut!
hualian
- THEY INVENTED LOVE
- very cute and touchy towards each other
- already acts like a married couple
- they “transfer spiritual powers” as an excuse to make out
- best friends to lovers dynamic
fengqing
- THE ENEMIES TO LOVERS DYNAMIC>>>>
- also “jerks who only really have each other” dynamic
- they say they hate each other but are also always together + hanging out
- apparently the author says they’re straight but????
- if fengqing straight 🤨 then why sexual tension 🙄✋
beefleaf
- she was a punk, and she did ballet
- opposites attract
- power lesbians
- what do you mean they're NOT kuromi and melody?
- they really just deserved better
quanyin
- opposites attract pt. 2
- they really just deserved better pt. 2
- yin yu has cat energy and quan yizhen has puppy energy i cannot explain why
- ANGST
- quan yizhen would see hualian kissing as a way to “transfer spiritual energy” and try to kiss yin yu to do that too (hes just. such a himbo AND WE LOVE THAT)
peiyue/banpei
- (to clarify: pei su x ban yue)
- soft couple
- lbr they’d hug and cuddle a lot
- my god they’re so cute
yushipei
- also i hc yushi huang as asexual
- saw this on twitter but “strong jock man getting beaten and saved in every way by elegant gentle woman"
- one-sided enemies to lovers
- so i think that her interactions with pei ming (who is known for his male chauvinism) would eventually humble him and have him change his ways
- interesting dynamic and i wish we got to see them interact more!!
- yushi huang is a bamf and so chill. honestly we are not worthy
- if they were in a relationship pei ming would be chugging respect women juice no question. i also feel like he'd calm down more
peishui
- friends with benefits/fuckbuddy energy 100000%
- shi wudu is one of the few people pei ming actually cares abt!!
- death of shi wudu probably affected pei ming a lot :(
junmei
- if you ship this you have good taste
- just found out this was a ship .0002 seconds ago but like. im all for it
- its all about the *clenches fist* one-sided yearning but also watching someone you care about slowly descend into madness and knowing you can do nothing to stop them even though it hurts too much to watch

the narrative framing of xie lian and jun wu
tgcf starts off with xie lian ascending for the third time, and throughout the first book, we learn that his past is dark and full of mistakes (which was why he was banished from heaven two times). but as the series progresses, we learn of not only xie lian’s past faults, but also pei ming’s, pei su’s, shi wudu’s, ling wen’s, etc. even though they’re gods, they all used to be human, and by nature, all humans are naturally a bit corrupt — which means that all gods are naturally a bit corrupt, too. so if even the gods are flawed and imperfect (even though they are worshipped and praised regardless), then what does that say about jun wu, the emperor of all these gods?
book 2 and book 4 are pivotal to our understanding of not only xie lian, but also jun wu’s actions. xie lian’s gradual fall from grace (book 2) and slow descent into madness & desperation (book 4) are set up to exactly parallel jun wu’s fall from grace when he was the crown prince of wuyong. the only difference between them was that in the end, xie lian chose to move on from his past grudges and choose a better future for himself, while jun wu continued to hold onto his grudges for thousands of years. in reality, they are nothing alike.
despite there not being a clear antagonist until book 5, there were many hints throughout the series. for one, jun wu was seen as a sense of security and safety for the other gods. whenever a situation went awry or out of hand, everything would be alright as soon as jun wu came. so at first glance, he appeared to be a deux ex machina device that was meant to comfort and hold the heavens together. some of his actions were undeniably strange, though — why, out of all the gods, does he favor xie lian the most? in truth, we don’t know much about jun wu or what he thinks until book 5.
as a whole, tgcf has fantastic writing. the plot is clear and consistent. the characters are written very well, as well as their development. and, of course, the reveal of the true antagonist is surprising, yet logical.

the thing I love about damien and will is how they aren't used as overly fetishised, queerbait, token gay characters - instead, Miriam gave them nuance, depth, backstory, character development, personality, and actually good foundation for the ship and it's just...*chefs kiss* Miriam did them well

purple hyacinth theory time
yall know what i think? i think lauren’s uncle isnt the phantom scythe’s leader. it’d be way too obvious if he was, and soph and eph dont do obvious. instead, he’d be the apostle AT MOST but it’s more likely that he’s a red herring - someone who’s meant to distract us so that when the leader is revealed, we’ll all be surprised. so who’s the leader?? ik lauren says at the beginning “...but i was the blindest of all” so it leads us to believe that the leader is someone close to her. but who would it be? or is that also a red herring??
william’s dad is veryyy suspicious but i think its more likely that he’s the apostle. or, at least, someone important/high-ranked in phantom scythe
what are lauren’s parents involvement with this? ik they were part of an organization (i forgot the name sorry lol) but lauren’s reaction to finding that out shows us that 1. it is not a popular or well-known organization 2. it was probably started and “abolished” very quickly.  i dont think they were part of the phantom scythe. but i think they might have co-founded the organization that eventually became corrupt and turned into phantom scythe (which is why they were specifically murdered - why else would the phantom scythe go out of their way to murder them? they must have been important).

“whisper of the heart” review
i just got finished with watching this movie and it’s midnight around here so apologies if i have any typos/if some of the things i wrote don’t make sense haha
- im the type to tear up at beautiful things so you bet your ass i teared up A LOT during this movie. there's so much to love about it.
- slow paced, slice of life, simple, yet profoundly impactful and magical.
- all of the characters are likable. i love the part when shizuku and seiji are walking past the tokyo skyline at night and they just talk about what they want to do in the future, its just so nice and inspiring to hear about seiji's ambitions.
- miyazaki does a good job at fleshing out all of the characters and truly making them human
- seeing shizuku slowly finding her place in this world is lovely to watch. it makes me so proud of her
- "even if i go [study abroad], i won't know if i have the talent until i try."
- if you didnt sing along with shizuku at the take me home country roads part, are you even human?
- THE CONFESSION SCENE....MY HEART i love them
- i love it when after seiji tells shizuko he's going to pursue his ambitions and study violin making in italy, shizuku feels depressed for a hot sec and then picks herself up and decides to pursue her own ambitions too and write a story. i really just love that for her
- shizuku finding her own inspiration is just <33333
- but when she stops taking care of herself and almost becomes obsessive with writing and gets into an argument with her sister...man that hits a lil too close to home
- when she sits down with her parents and they talk and her dad is just supportive its like :):):):) "whatever you're doing at the library, i admire how hard you're working. let's let her do what she wants. not everyone has to be the same...okay, shizuku, do what you believe in. but it's not easy to walk your own road."
- i love how some parts of the movie are fantasy/action, but those scenes are just part of shizuku's imagination and what she's writing about. i think its pretty neat
- when shizuku begins to doubt herself :(((
- not me full on crying when grandpa told his story about the baron
- when seiji comes back from italy and takes shizuku to watch the sunrise with him >>> ghibli boys are simply superior
- "i'm glad i pushed myself. i understand myself better now. i'm going to study hard and go on to high school."
- I LITERALLY SCREAMED WHEN SEIJI SAID "i know its too soon but one day in the future would you marry me" AHSKJDSGHDFSJGHKJ
- MAN THE ENDING WAS GREAT
- overall, a lovely story about finding your own inspiration and ambitions, not striving to reach perfection, and to create something not for others but something for yourself - something that YOU can be proud of. a lot of the advice given to shizuku is something that ive honestly needed to hear myself, too.
probably my 2nd favorite (or even most favorite) ghibli movie!
10/10 <3

kiki’s delivery service 🎀
this movie has so much meaning to me. kiki’s journey, character development, struggles, and feelings all resonate with me. the message this movie gives inspires me to create something for myself. this is a movie that makes me so, so happy beyond words.
Tumblr media
when kiki loses her confidence, it’s heartbreaking. it’s heartbreaking because it exposes the constant fear that we all have - that maybe one day, we’ll just stop being good at the things that make us stand out. at what point does your talent stop making you stand out? and how does that contribute to toxic comparison and personal insecurities?
after kiki’s debut in the town, she feels humiliated. she messed up. she caused trouble. the people here don’t like her. or that’s what she thinks, at least. throughout the movie she meets kind, giving, and empathetic people who help her on her journey, like osono and her husband, or ursula, or tombo. it’s just proof that nice people are everywhere no matter where you go. kindness is universal and ever-present.
kiki, as a character, is imperfect. she’s talented, cheerful, and easygoing sometimes, but she also makes mistakes, is moody, and depressed other times. instead of this weakening her character, it strengthens it. it makes her human and relatable, because she’s not one-dimensional. it makes room for improvement and paves a road for development. that’s why at the end of the movie, it’s so dramatic and tense. will kiki finally be able to fly again? did she grow up, and is that why she can’t understand jiji anymore? at the end of the movie, you can’t help but feel proud of her. because now kiki is surrounded by people who genuinely care for her, and has made friends. she finally knows what she wants to do and why. she’s more forgiving to herself when she makes mistakes. she learns how to overcome her struggles, no matter how big or small they are.
so that’s why kiki’s delivery service is so meaningful to me. it’s inspiring and hopeful, and just like kiki, i’m trying to find my place in this world. kiki’s delivery service is a movie that motivates me to do better.

"i love you," he wants to say, it's at the tip of his tongue, but he knows he can't. it hurts too much, and its the hurt that festers in his heart, lives there, and builds a home. he wants to hold onto his hands tighter and kiss him.
he doesn't want to let go.
he lets go.

and it's like a warmth - a warmth that spreads through his fingertips, and then through his cheeks, and it’s an electrifying feeling, really - and he smiles softly. "thank you," he says. he doesn't need to say "i love you", because he already knows.

my opinion about true beauty
lowkey this is gonna be a post where i rant about true beauty’s (webtoon) downfalls. obviously do not interact if ur gonna disagree, because i dont want any unnecessary discourse. (also im not posting this so i can be convinced that true beauty is actually a good webtoon - i just need to get this off my chest.)
first of all...let me address the weak writing and plot. it really seems as if the author is just shifting focus to boy drama and not actual character development/plot that would be actually interesting? i also get the feeling that the plot is literally going nowhere. i don’t have any excitement for what’s going to happen next - it’s either way too predictable or i know something mundane is going to drag on for multiple episodes. and plus, it’s not like “true beauty” is a feel-good cliché story (if it was, i would understand why people would defend it, because it could be a comfort webtoon). no, instead, it really drills in that if you don’t fit into society’s beauty standard, you’re ugly. if you’re slightly overweight? you’re fat and you’re ugly. you have acne? ugly. you have stretch marks? you have hair on your arms and legs? you have bushy eyebrows, small eyes, a wide face, and you wear glasses? absolutely disgusting.
(please note my personal opinions do not reflect anything i said up there. im just stating what i perceive true beauty is trying to say.)
according to this webtoons, if you’re not skinny, thin, tall but not too tall, have good skin, big eyes, etc. then you’re fucking ugly. which is such a jarring message? especially because the author really drills this in at the beginning of the webtoon (which i initially excused because i thought that the author would address this later down the road and have jugyeong have character development...haha no). and also, get this - you’re human and it’s natural to have those things??? i don’t understand how any of that makes you ugly. it doesn’t. and it’s such a bad message to be giving out to younger audiences who are easily influenced by the media they consume !! this really just preys on people’s insecurities. so fucked up.
now let me talk about jugyeong specifically. she’s such a bad role model. okay, at the beginning of the webtoon we see her discover makeup and then have a “glow up”. then we see her struggle with her insecurities. that part of the story was fine, because it at least showed a human side to jugyeong. also, she actually had personality. she had a passion for horror, wanted to pursue being a makeup artist, genuinely enjoyed helping other people, didn’t judge people off of superficial beliefs, etc etc. then, the time skip happens and literally all of jugyeong’s personality is wiped away. and now she has literal cardboard as her personality. all we know about her now is that seojun is her boyfriend!! this is her first relationship!! literally nothing else about her bc shes boring af now!! she’s a hypocrite and treats people she sees as “ugly” worse than her!! where did all of that character and personality from before go? it’s disappointing to say the least.
and don’t even get me started on seojun and suho, who are fighting for a girl who isn’t even wife material. not even gonna lie i don’t want either of them to end up w her. seojun, i acknowledge, has gone through a lot of character development and has actually changed & also has admirable ambitions. his relationship with jugyeong, however, is obviously not going to last at all. suho, on the other hand, is a nice person/the ONE decent person in this webtoon. unfortunately, i do have to acknowledge that outside of that, there’s not really much we know about suho (other than his dad being sick). and he has gone thru literally no character development.
(shoutout to suho and aiden for being the only reasons i read this far tho, lmao)
i also want to address the title dilemma - by which i mean that “true beauty” is actually meant to be called “the secret of angel” or smth like that. which is like...okay the title is misleading which is so weird esp because this is one of the most popular webtoons on the site? i dont understand why they would purposely change the title if not to mislead people. also, i see some people defending the bad writing/characterization/clicheness of true beauty by saying that it’s supposed to be like a k-drama/reflective of korean culture...which is, by the way, so fucked up. first of all, k-dramas are not synonymous with shitty writing and characters. ALSO, get this: just because it’s korean, it doesn’t excuse any blatantly bad and superficial messages it gives out. especially because beauty standards in korea are toxic as hell.
so, think of this as my “breakup letter” to true beauty. what a shame, too, because i’ve been following this weekly for 2 years straight (since 2018!) and it’s just so goddamn disappointing how much true beauty has rapidly decreased in quality since.
(see “the man who cleans up makeup”/
“the makeup remover” webtoon, which is so much better and also gives off so many good messages WHILE ADDRESSING THE ROLE BEAUTY/MAKEUP PLAYS IN KOREAN SOCIETY.)
goodbye true beauty. hopefully you get better writing, characterization, and a better author one day!

im gonna be honest, some time ago i thought that “the man who cleans up makeup” was a pretty good manhwa, but nothing really outstanding (at that point i had only read up to ch. 43 or so). that is until i started reading the raws (and im so glad i did) because damn...the art, the writing, the nuance, the character development, and the competition progression is just *chefs kiss* i could go rambling on and on but you get the point.
this is a manhwa that really keeps you on the edge of your seat and makes you wonder what’s going to happen next. it’s a manhwa that really gets you thinking about things that you’ve never really questioned before. and it’s a manhwa with wonderful, amazing characters (and if they’re not amazing they at least evoke some sort of emotion, like seungwoo).
it's a manhwa with a simple concept, phenomenal writing, and an amazing execution. if you’re just starting it, give it time to develop before dropping it :)
honestly “the man who cleans up makeup” and “unlucky mansion” are my top 2 manhwas right now !! i highly recommend you read both! bravo to the writers and artists because WOW yall are amazing <33

final thoughts about unlucky mansion !!! <3
spoilers under the cut! read at your own risk :)
DSJKGHDFSKJG THAT WAS LITERALLY SO GOOD I LOVE UNLUCKY MANSION SO FUCKING MUCH!!! i loved the open-ended ending that was  basically “life will go on, and we’ll be happy as long as we’re together” and i just 💘💖💗💓💝💞 im so happy that eun joo and woo jin esp can finally move onto the next chapter in their lives, together, with each other at their sides :)
let me touch on a few topics:
1. chae min going to australia and finding her own happiness after having sung woo help her realize how to do that :) man i just love her character and she literally deserves this. also lmao the fact that she got a crush on sung woo and said alright i am going 2 leave to an entirely different country now peace out
now that i’m rereading unlucky mansion (ik i just finished it but it cant be helped) i realize just how cynical and self-destructive chae min used to be. im really happy for her and her decision to finally let herself be happy :)
“it looks like happiness is a really heavy thing to you, noona. but happiness is just when you eat good food, when you see a movie you like for the third time...or maybe when you’re walking down the street and get excited by a song that you can hear from a nearby store. it’s not something that heavy. happiness is becoming happy when you want to. if you’re ready to receive it, you can become happy at any time.” -sung woo, ch. 68
2. NO THOUGHTS ONLY EUN JOO AND WOO JIN...LOVE THEM BOTH THEY’RE SO LUCKY TO HAVE EACH OTHER I AHDSJFHDGH <333
“it’s not winning against despair and fear, but rather sitting down together and sharing like you’re at a meal. once you share, hope will emerge and the problem will be solved...well, what i’m trying to say is don’t keep everything in and suffer by yourself.” -eun joo, ch. 20
“you portrayed forgetting your family and living as a bad thing in there, but to be honest, we’re not a hero like odysseus—we’re just normal people. as normal people get close and obsessed with each other, they’ll suffer. even if you became a bit of a bad person...it’s more important for you to forget the sad memories and become happy from further away. you have to be happy.” -eun joo, ch. 70
“even though we love words that dash for the conclusion like electrons, because we can’t properly see the ending for our story...because we continued to wander and seek out our own paths to get here—we could understand each other’s scars, and have no choice but to love each other.” -woo jin, ch. 70
3. EUN JOO BEING SUCCESSFUL! i love that for her! especially bc i also wanna be a (potential!) fashion designer one day it was just so fucking cool to see her at work and in her element. man im just so happy for her and she’s come a long way, especially from the beginning of the story. also her personality and style is just kickass
4. WOO JIN RECONCILING WITH HIS BROTHER AND MOVING ON!! loved this. everything was executed perfectly. it was super emotional at points, and i really felt the despair :( but in the end, his brother’s surgery went well, and woo jin learned how to live his own life without feeling any unnecessary guilt over things he had no control over and i just :) also that acceptance speech was just so badass!!! what a king !! also love his hello kitty collection it’s very admirable
5. kwon hi and kwon joon <3 my favorite orange twins hehe. i feel sad that kwon joon broke up with his girlfriend and he failed his singing audition, but ig it’s just life i suppose T_T wishing him more success in the future! and i also just love their sibling dynamic in general :)
6. i really love the art. it’s just so fitting for the story, and the way panels are drawn, and the color palettes used, it’s just *chefs kiss* so beautiful!! so much art appreciation <3
7. the writing, plot, and story were phenomenal. i love how it turned a basic, typical trope (living together with roommates) and turned it into something compelling, complex, and interesting to read about. all of the character dynamics and interactions were just so fun to read about, and literally everyone had chemistry w each other in unlucky mansion (by which i mostly mean platonic chemistry, except for woo jin and eun joo they had hella romantic chemistry lmfao). the author also touched on some deep topics that really resonated with me, and the conflicts that the characters faced were super relatable and things i could empathize with. plus, the humor and expressions the characters made were top notch! the emotional scenes were so heart wrenching too haha ;; overall, there was a great mix of emotional and comical scenes and the writing of the relationship & character developments were super organic and...human.
8. i wish we saw a eun joo and woo jin wedding but it’s okay the last panel of them together is good enough T_T
i can rest easy now...im so glad that i finally got to read season 3 of unlucky mansion!! (even though i had to read raws and the english translation on mystic’s tumblr at the same time - which, by the way, was an Experience and honestly kinda fun. it spiced things up)
i know im going to be rereading this manhwa for years to come, and im honestly surprised that i havent read this sooner - but im glad i read it now and the memories that came with reading it will be happy and heartfelt.
(i literally feel so much serotonin rn im smiling so much)
alright, peace out! that’s all for today, folks 😊
- sonia 🌸
