AZRIEL, ERIS AND IMPULSIVITY
So, quick post because something just came to my mind after scrolling through the Eris tag: between Azriel and Eris, Az is the impulsive one.
Okay, I just finished writing this and it has become a short meta. Sigh.
Eris has an UNBELIEVABLE self-restraint.
As far as I remember, the only time we have seen Eris doing something out of impulse on canon is when he turned around to save his soldiers in ACOSF, but apart from that he is ALWAYS acting out his plan, or at least following some kind of reason or under orders. For example, when he helps Lucien get to the Spring border it's obvious he has a plan to make sure he survives in motion, and even when he refuses to kill Jesminda it's because he decides not to do it, instead of just being overwhelmed with emotions. Even when he decided to leave Mor in the Autumn border (or break the engagement) it was a thought-based decision, instead of an action inspired by feelings. When he is hunting Lucien and Feyre on their way to the Night Court he makes a point to say that Berlin was the one giving the orders, and so his hands were tied. You can see more instances of his self-restraint in the High Lords meeting, when he even helps keeping his siblings and father in line. Or every single time he talks with the Night Court, when insults are thrown everywhere. He DOES insult people, he deliberately pokes at their insecurities, but he never does it out of anger, it's always a power play or just to amuse himself. The biggest example of his self-restraint is when at the end of ACOSF he is literally sitting down reading a book after being tortured- and remember, he didn't break under his father's torture either. Eris does have a huge pride, and we have seen him getting angry after somebody accusing him of something he believes is undeserved, or when one of his perceived weaknesses have been found. But he never, ever, acts out of impulse.
Azriel, on the other hand. Oh boy. Mr. "waiting suits me", yes, of course, whatever you say.
As we have seen in his POV chapter, Azriel's remedy to Feeling Things I Don't Like is not feeling at all. He feels angry because Rhys forbid him from seeing Elain? Well, let's just stand outside in the snow, freeze a bit until you feel hollow and then punch some training posts or something. Let's just NOT process those feelings or do a little bit of introspection, because why bother actually having healthy emotional management. This might work in a short term, but suppressing your emotions (and yourself, again, look at how in his POV he even stops himself from crossing his arms because it reminds him of his father) eventually turns your insides into a pressure cooker and at some point explodes. And that's what happens with azriel again and again and again. Impulsive actions thay keep escalating until, for example, he throws himself on eris at the High Lords meeting and completely breaks the non-violence rule. When somebody he likes (but specially Mor) has been insulted, he makes threatening comments or motions, which are very out of character from him, since he would rather be in the background. He leans down to kiss Elain after just making a half excuse to himself in his mind just because "seeing her and Lucien together (sitting in the same room) was almost too much" and he was frustrated (because kissing somebody who OBVIOUSLY has feelings for you thinking "just this once, since nobody is seeing us" without talking to them beforehand and knowing if they are okay with "just this once" is very, very healthy). He also keeps avoiding people when his feelings are hurt (when Mor was angry because he didn't tell her about Rhys' plans with Keir), etc. Basically: Azriel keeps making actions led mostly by his feelings, instead of his head.
So yeah, in conclusion: while Eris always stops himself before acting out, decides what to do and then plans how to do it before acting, or at least tries not to take actions led by feelings only (and also can take insults to his pride), Azriel goes off every single time his feelings become a little too much and his suppression method fails him, as well as handling insults towards himself and his loved ones pretty badly by his standards.
And I think it's funny that the fire-coded character is the rational one and the coldness/ice-coded one flips out at the drop of a hat.

I don’t understand why people are going on about how that waltz scene is Karma and Deserved Suffering for Cassian for ignoring Nesta when Mor was around when...
There isn’t a single trace of jealousy or self-hatred or derision on Cassian’s part in that scene? Have we lost reading comprehension? He is literally watching her dance with Eris with nothing but Awe and Admiration! Regardless of how the story will progress, ACOMAF ACOWAR and ACOFAS Cassian would have witnessed that from the shadows and not mentioned how Nesta glowed as she danced and conquered—he would have made at least one comment about how she wasn’t dancing with him because he’s low-born.
Say what you will about holding people responsible and withholding absolution (which I agree with to a degree) but I’m afraid most of you have missed the mark when it comes to a scene that not only shows us Nesta beautiful and confident and glowing once more, but also hints at character growth on Cassian’s part.
Homeboy is literally watching his (maybe) girl dazzle the room and pirouette during a complicated waltz and look damn right breathtaking while she does it—and he’s proud of her, proud of her confidence, proud of the fact that people have stopped dancing to watch her dance. Proud of the fact that he’s not the only one who’s noticed how daring and amazing she is.
So far, there isn’t a single negative emotion in this scene so why are we trying so hard to make it so?
Some of you really just want discourse for discourse and drama and it really shows.

“Eris tried to kill/hurt/capture Feyre and Lucien!!!111!!!!”
Right. So next time, I’m sure Eris will just stroll into that cave, no weapons on hand, and ask to have a tea party. Guaranteed Feyre or Lucien will accept that request, no questions asked.
Hmmm. Do we see why that does not work? Eris cares for Lucien, but Lucien has no idea--as a result of years and years of wearing a mask under his father’s reign. And Eris assumes Lucien has shared his side of the story (which does not include the sacrifices Eris made for his brother) and Feyre shares the same sentiment towards him.
It’s worth noting Eris is accompanied by his brothers, who would not hesitate to sell him out to their father if he displays an ounce of weakness. They want an opportunity at the throne, and Eris would be handing it to them on a silver platter if he marched in and spilled the beans on everything. Beron would likely kill Eris without reluctancy once he returned.
“You hunted me down like an animal,” I cut in. “I think we’ll choose to believe the worst.”
“Eris’s pale face flushed. “I was given an order. And sent to do it with two of my. . . brothers.”
Correct me if I’m wrong, but we’ve never seen Eris flush before. Which means this topic flusters him. Why do people get flustered? Multiple reasons. . . notably when they’re being misunderstood.
“I wasn’t there--when they did it. Ask him. I refused. It was the first  and only time I have ever denied my father anything. He punished me.”
Don’t you think Eris is absolutely terrified of being punished again? Therefore does not deny his father again, and listens to the orders given.
“Helion shrugged. “On and off for decades. Until Beron found out. They say the lady was all brightness and smiles before that. And after Beron was through with her. . . You saw what she is.”
No wonder Eris is scared shitless of his father.
Thoughts?

Disclaimer:
This is a bookish blog where I mostly post about SJM books (that's how it started at least)—but you will find other bookish content including fan art. I also reblog other random things since this is tumblr and chaos is welcomed.
If you're interested in reading some of my SJM-related theory and meta posts, then check out the below.

“And it’s another long story, but the short of it is Eris refused to marry her. Said she’d been sullied by a bastard-born lesser faerie, and he’d now sooner fuck a sow.”
For those claiming “Eris is a douche! Look what he says about her! He’d rather fuck a sow!” can we take a moment to collect ourselves and realize Eris couldn’t have simply refused to marry her. Imagine his father’s reaction (the abuser we all tend to ignore)? If anything, Eris did the only thing he could where he could protect Mor and himself. And he succeeded. If he’d admitted that she was gay, Mor would have likely been treated worse. It was the only alternative where both could remain safe and untouched by Beron.
Unfortunately, Eris could only protect both of them from Beron. Eris had no control over Keir’s actions. Why are we accusing a victim in this situation? Someone nearly--if not exactly--as powerless as Mor?
