The Sacred Band of Thebes (Ancient Greek: Ἱερός Λόχος, Hierós Lókhos) was a troop of select soldiers, consisting of 150 pairs of male lovers which formed the elite force of the Theban army in the 4th century BC, ending Spartan domination. Its predominance began with its crucial role in the Battle of Leuctra in 371 BC. It was annihilated by Philip II of Macedon in the Battle of Chaeronea in 338 BC.
According to Plutarch, the 300 hand-picked men were chosen by Gorgidas purely for ability and merit, regardless of social class. It was composed of 150 male couples, each pair consisting of an older erastês (ἐραστής, "lover") and a younger erômenos (ἐρώμενος, "beloved"). Athenaeus of Naucratis also records the Sacred Band as being composed of "lovers and their favorites, thus indicating the dignity of the god Eros in that they embrace a glorious death in preference to a dishonorable and reprehensible life", while Polyaenus describes the Sacred Band as being composed of men "devoted to each other by mutual obligations of love".
Defeat came at the Battle of Chaeronea (338 BC), the decisive contest in which Philip II of Macedon, with his son Alexander the Great, extinguished Theban hegemony. The battle is the culmination of Philip's campaign into central Greece in preparation for a war against Persia. It was fought between the Macedonians and their allies and an alliance of Greek city-states led by Athens and Thebes. Diodorus records that the numbers involved for the two armies were more or less equal, both having around 30,000 men and 2,000 cavalry.
The traditional hoplite infantry was no match for the novel long-speared Macedonian phalanx: the Theban army and its allies broke and fled, but the Sacred Band, although surrounded and overwhelmed, refused to surrender. The Thebans of the Sacred Band held their ground and Plutarch records that all 300 fell where they stood beside their last commander, Theagenes. Their defeat at the battle was a significant victory for Philip, since until then, the Sacred Band was regarded as invincible throughout all of Ancient Greece. Plutarch records that Philip II, on encountering the corpses "heaped one upon another", understanding who they were, wept and exclaimed,
Perish any man who suspects that these men either did or suffered anything unseemly.
— Plutarch, Pelopidas 18
Pausanias in his Description of Greece mentions that the Thebans had erected a gigantic statue of a lion near the village of Chaeronia surmounting the tomb of the Thebans killed in battle against Philip.
In 1818, a British architect named George Ledwell Taylor spent a summer in Greece with two friends at Livadeia. On June 3, they decided to go horseback riding to the nearby village of Chaeronea using Pausanias' Description of Greece as a guidebook. Two hours away from the village, Taylor's horse momentarily stumbled on a piece of marble jutting from the ground. Looking back at the rock, he was struck by its appearance of being sculpted and called for their party to stop. They dismounted and dug at it with their riding-whips, ascertaining that it was indeed sculpture. They enlisted the help of some nearby farmers until they finally uncovered the massive head of a stone lion which they recognized as the same lion mentioned by Pausanias. Parts of the statue had broken off and a good deal of it still remained buried. It was later pieced back together in 1902 after obtaining permission from the Greek government.
In the late 19th century, excavations in the area revealed that the monument stood at the edge of a quadrangular enclosure. The skeletons of 254 men laid out in seven rows were found buried within it. A tumulus near the monument was also identified as the site of the Macedonian polyandrion where the Macedonian dead were cremated. Excavation of the tumulus between 1902 and 1903 by the archeologist Georgios Soteriades confirmed this. At the center of the mound, about 22 ft (6.7 m) deep, was a layer of ashes, charred logs, and bones about 0.75 m (2.5 ft) thick. Recovered among these were vases and coins dated to the 4th century BC. Swords and remarkably long spearheads measuring about 15 in (38 cm) were also discovered, which Soteriades identified as the Macedonian sarissas.

"We fabricate our demons Invite them into our homes Have supper with the aliens And fight the war alone We conjure up our skeletons Enlist the den of thieves Frightened from our closets Then sewn upon our sleeves In the stream of consciousness There is a river crying Living comes much easier Once we admit we're dying" Dream Theater - Lines In The Sand

hi, can i have a pairing for mw2? :-)
-> I’m a bi woman btw!
APPEARANCE:
Short, brown hair with some blue peakaboo. Think of Graves’ hair. Brown eyes. Round face, SOME freckles. 5’0”. def chubby, but a lot of it is turning to muscle.
PERSONALITY:
I would like to say I’m laid back and chill, I am anxious sometimes but most of the time I’m quiet and I go with the flow. I’m loud when I’m talking about what I believe in. There’s a lot of tragic mistakes I’ve made in my life and I’m trying to better myself, so there’s a lot of self reflection moments where I prefer to be alone during. I’ll make it known if you say something I don’t like/messed up. I work well under pressure. My number one thing in life is that I want to help people, I want my career to revolve around that. When I get aggressive, I don’t back down unless I know I’m wrong. Even when I do, it takes me a moment to realize I am wrong.
PLANS:
I plan on going to College for an associates in mathematics and science, majoring in biology. After I get my degree, I plan on enlisting into the Navy or Marines as a Corpsman. Despite this, I’m very anti-war. If I make it past boot camp and I become a corpsman, and later in life I decide to leave the military, I plan on transferring my skills to paramedic work.
Simon "Ghost" Riley
How you met: Military When you said you were in the Navy, everyone assumed you were some Top Gun pilot or submariner. However, you corrected them in saying you were a Corpsman. You focused on just about everything related to the medical field. Every day was different, consisting of vaccine administration, performing emergency dental procedures, and helping out with surgeries. As you entered the on-ship medical clinic, your commanding officer informed you that you would be assisting with an emergency medical treatment. This case was a bit different as instead of operating on Navy SEALs or Marines, it was a British Army Lieutenant who had a joint-op with your branch. You nodded in response and went to greet the patient with the attending physician. The quarters that housed the patients preparing for surgery were cramped and you went to greet the patient, a Simon Riley. You pulled back the curtain and examined the man lying on the bed. He was still in his fatigues but you were drawn to his skeleton mask that covered his head and face. "Lieutenant," you greeted, "I'll be the Corpsman in the operating room today. Don't worry you're in good hands with the Navy," you spoke and he simply nodded in response. "I'll see you on the otherwise," you said and left. As you stood outside of the curtain you couldn't help but think how he was such a man of few words.
A peek into your relationship: The Naval Ball was an event that had the ensigns and admirals in one fancy hall with one another. It was something everyone looked forward to. You were no exception as you slipped into a silk blue dress. As you smoothed your brown hair, your boyfriend sat looking at you on the bed. "You nervous?" you asked as you turned to him. "I've been to worse," he spoke and adjusted his tie. You had been dating Simon for quite sometime now but this was the first time he would be interacting with your colleagues. As you walked to the ballroom, he held your hand tightly and loomed over your small figure. You ordered you both some drinks and stood at a table to mingle with some familiar faces. The physician who had operated on Simon made his way over to you. "I'd recognize those eyes anywhere, Simon," he said to your boyfriend as he peered at his face, half covered with a surgical mask. "How are my stitches holding up?" he asked him as you sipped on your glass of wine. "Doing good doc," he replied curtly. The physician's eyes were directed to you, "Don't tell me he's your date, corpsman?" he asked skeptically. "He is," you smiled proudly, "guess I made a good impression." The group laughed and Simon replied, "Like she always says, I'm in good hands with the Navy."

Last year (until my first tumblog vanished for a time), Dracula Daily inspired me to do something I’d considered before: Lord of the Rings Daily, following the events of the War of the Rings by calendar date from September 23 TA 3018 till the destruction of the Ring March 25 TA 3019. This will be following Appendix B so, like DD, not all days will have entries. And there’s a twist: it’s being done in my triangle figure cartoons instead of in book excerpts, and mashed up with the fandom crossover multiverse featured in my fancomic The Hero of Three Faces. There will be unique elements of both the novels and the movies.
March 8: Aragorn (James T. Kirk) walks the Paths of the Dead to the Stone of Erech and, as the true king, enlists the cursed shades there (skeleton war skeletons) against the forces of Mordor.
I thought of several possibilities I didn't like to give franchise faces to the cursed dead. Zombies, from any of several franchises? I didn't think they'd look much different from the shades in the movies. The ghosts of Ghosts? A little too silly even for me. Though you might think that of what I finally did. art reference

"October 14, 2022
End of first week enlisted in the skeleton war
I never knew who the fuckboys were exactly, before this year. I saw so many memes of the war and christmas' advances while I lived...but I never took that seriously.
Those knife-eared bastards. 'Santa's little helpers', and his own private army. Every year they push the boundary of their holiday further. And every year, the November cease fire arrives....and everyone forgets till next year.
The pilgrims were the first to fall. They had let them move up right to their doorstep without a word. The elves set up Black Friday without resistance. And now, they share their month with the winter holiday. Consigned to X-mas songs in stores in return for Thanksgiving being remembered. Leaving the goths and spooky boys to hold the line.
....the goths have fallen, however. And we are under attack on all fronts.
With the hype of the skeleton war dying down, recruitment has been slowing. The elves didn't even push much last year, and we let our guard down. Before a single skeleton could mobilze, the goths were overrun. Their offensive delayed a few days to gain the element of surprise.
So many stores are besieged by them. Christmas and Halloween decorations sold side by side. But there is still hope. We hold much of the major chains. This isn't over yet.
If we can make it to November first, the elves will back down once again.
...
I hear sleigh bells."

Do you have any thoughts on how the press in L’Manberg would’ve treated c!Wilbur? Any time but especially in Pogtopia. It seems to me that he would be a very easy target for emotional stories. The kinda patronising sob stories ya know.
Alright anon since you asked so nicely. Yes so many thoughts.
Before Pogtopia Wilbur was treated with a kind of god-like love. He was the one who saved them from Dream’s rule he was their hero. Any criticism of him was dismissed after all L Manburg had spent years (yes I made my own timeline for this au don’t worry about it) fighting a war to the point they had to enlist children. After the final control room especially any criticism of Wilbur was swiftly shut down as betraying the nation. This was not started by Wilbur it was started the the deep loyalty his people had to him. After it was Wilbur who had held their flag on Independence Day waving it high in the winds tears running down his normally stoic face as he declared them free. An image older La Manberg citizens would never forget.
The presidential family was deeply loved and everyone was sad when sally died. Nobody really cared that Fundy was trans since you know there was literally shit like zombies and skeletons and Dream running around. Fundy grew up to be a flirt like his father and caused many scandals the White House had to hide.
During the elections Quackity spread some rumors which did some damnge to Wilbur’s reputation. However it wasn’t until Schlatt joined and started making problems that people started to question if Wilbur was over staying his welcome.
And then Pogtopia. The Manberg press painted Wilbur as a crazy mad man. They printed stories about Wilbur having affairs while he was in office, with Eret with Quackity with George. None of it was true but it still made Wilbur look bad especially the rumors about Eret. The pogtopian news made him a fallen hero who had been thrown away by the evil manberg people. Wilbur would save them however and bring light back into their world they promised as things got worse under Schlatt.
