________________________________________________________
I think I ordered this book some time during summer, after I accidentally stumbled upon it on an online bookstore. I love anthologies and I love plants, so this title definitely intrigued me enough to order it. I finally decided to read it around Christmas and finished it during a recent trip, so it's officially my first finished book of the year.
"Evil Roots: Killer Tales of the Botanical Gothic" is an interesting anthology of short horror stories by quite a few well-known authors. From the creator of Sherlock Holmes, to the acclaimed writer of "The Yellow Wallpaper", all the way to the legendary H. G. Wells, this collections features some hidden gems of the late 19th and early 20th century. While the stories are certainly old-school, they could still be regarded as timeless classics and masterful creations.
Most stories revolve around the fascination of the exotic - of unknown plants that are in some way dangerous to humans (or other organisms) and which originate from far away places, like South America. There's mentions of exquisite poisonous flowers, murderous liana, mysterious wisteria, and the weirdest of them all - carnivorous plants.
It is interesting just how much the writers and, by default, the general public were fascinated by exotic flora which, in one way or another, transcended the known laws of nature. Plants were considered sedentary, passive, and at the bottom of the food chain, but as new discoveries were being presented and as more people, professionals and amateurs alike, from the western civilization started their expeditions in new places, society was being introduced with oddities that seemingly didn't follow any established rules. So while the horror in this collection is displayed through various flora, the true horror is derived from the simple fact that humans fear what they cannot understand. One of the most frightening things a person, especially a scientist, can experience is realizing that they will never be able to fully predict nature's capability to adapt and to evolve.
Of course, this theme goes hand in hand with the understanding that it is dangerous altering the natural order of things. While this could also be understood as criticism to the human tendency to play god, there isn't much religious commentary throughout the collection. The stories are centered around ecology, evolution, and biology, highlighting how humans shouldn't meddle with something as powerful as nature - which they will never fully understand, let alone be able to control. Even though the writers do create a feeling of dread through the fear of nature, the horror is actually realized through characters that underestimate its abilities and that have the need to disfigure nature in order to measure their own capabilities.
Furthermore, this collection highlights the uncomfortable fascination western civilization had with other cultures. The urge to study new exotic phenomena on their own accord, to test the limits of human science on something they don't fully understand with little to no regard of the laws of nature and the test subject's true needs, is somewhat perverse. These scientists are conducting experiments in uncontrolled environments, and playing with their test-subjects in order to test their own abilities and knowledge. It is a portrayal of poor research. They're acting out of curiosity with little to no regard of the consequences. It is not their subjects that are evil, for they have been brought up and mistreated in an environment completely unnatural to their habitat, but their tormentor, who butchers them through extreme studies. This is usually evident through a secondary character, most often a colleague, who tries to stop the scientist in their mad experiment before it's too late. The horror is, therefore, found in the abuse executed by the brazen oppressor, not in their vicious, abnormal creations.
The fact that the aforementioned themes barely scratch the surface of all the ideas featured in this collection, prove how layered and compelling all the featured stories are. The editor also did a marvelous job with a lovely foreword and an intriguing introduction to each of the authors and their respective work. Of course, as with every short story collection, not all works are equally strong, but "Evil Roots: Killer Tales of the Botanical Gothic" is still a gorgeous anthology and a noteworthy testament to a relatively overlooked category of horror.

Finally some art, but also a ramble.
Freddy has some identity issues (haha funny) and while it could be that he’s just written inconsistently (his Twitter replies and his in-game stuff are almost like two different people) I like to think that maybe he doesn’t really know who he is, or is all of that at once.
He’s one of the only characters a part of the main cast who we don’t really get a feeling on what his childhood was like. Emily had a difficult time growing up and so craves consistency and comfort. Emma had a good life starting out, then everything went terribly wrong. Kreacher grew up incredibly poor and had to rely on thievery to get by. Freddy had almost nothing, not even a slight indication of what his life growing up was, and I don’t think it was very good considering just how barely-functional he is. He is impulsive, he is irrational, he is cruel, he is proud, yet he also can be rational, can be patient, has moments where he is almost kind, and seems to have a lot of self loathing. He shows guilt yet also doesn’t, like he can’t decide whether he should feel remorse for he actions or isn’t deciding at all, it’s just whatever state of mind he’s in right now.
We do know he either has a sibling or some other family member, maybe even his father, named Vane (as indicated by one of his letters) but that’s about it. No info on who this person exactly is or what his feeling about them are.
Freddy is a character who is either treated as morally grew or just a villain by his own creators, and it really sucks that him and Kreacher pretty much get fucked in terms of development because they needed Emma and Emily to look better in comparison. They both could have these really interesting backstories and present some things to really think about, especially for kreacher in terms of how the poor are fucked over and are demonized as a result (which is ironic considering he is completely demonized by half the fandom)
If you want to check out Freddy’s Twitter replies, the translated ones are on his wiki page. I’d honestly like to go into more depth about Freddy’s character, but I tend to project so much onto him that it might be a bit uncomfortable. Either way, I just wish the idv devs treated him better.

Lord Peter Wimsey fantasy casting!
Aided by the brilliant @freenarnian, we have come up with the cast for a Lord Peter Wimsey movie or tv show that is just too perfect!
In the title role, we have Domhnall Gleeson! Right build, huge intelligence and sensitivity, great comic skills, and able to play both dumb and brilliant!
In the CRUCIAL role of Harriet Vane, Michelle Dockery! Her singing and voice are the key here - low, musical, and distinctive! And she looks great in the period fashions!
In the roles of Peter's sister Mary and best friend Charles Parker, we have Lucy Boynton and Will Poulter (fresh from their brilliant success in Why Didn't They Ask Evans!)
In the role of Peter's mother and brother, Emma Thompson and Hugh Laurie! (Don't bother me with their ages!)
In the KEY role of Bunter, Peter's manservant, we have Tom Bennett, from Love and Friendship!
Now I just need about 20 million dollars and a distribution deal! ;)

what are your favorite heroines written by fitzgerald? and by thomas hardy? and by dickens? and by your other favorite authors? ♡
i cannot believe i’ve had this blog for 84 years and i've never done an official ranking of my girls! i limited myself to twenty characters (one per author), but if an author has more than one amazing heroine, i will be talking about all of them. so let’s start at the beginning, a very good place to start! 💗
1.) estella havisham. my forever girl, my number one heroine when it comes to serious literature, and the blueprint for all my bitchy rich girl faves - of which there are many on this list. but no one compares to estella! you might be a spoiled brat, but have you been bent and broken into a better shape?
2.) natasha rostova / kitty shcherbatsky. i think i would ultimately choose natasha if it ever came to that - she’s just a richer character, and one of the only major literary heroines who has a killer sense of humor - but kitty is my sweet pink marshmallow. it’s a very close call!
3.) cosette / eponine. again, i can’t choose. i think eponine is the more complex and sophisticated character, but cosette is so GOOD! she’s just loveable, which is a very hard quality to pin down. i love them both so much. 10/10 for each!
4.) eustacia vye, followed so closely by tess that the difference is infinitesimal. tess is the greater heroine (goodness made interesting - name a bigger challenge in literature!), but god, i fucking love eustacia. the chapter introducing her in return of the native is still the single best in-depth breakdown of a character’s personality that i have ever encountered in a novel.
5.) anne shirley, because she’s been with me my entire life and has taught me more about happiness than any other character i’ve ever come across. “the iron has entered into my soul, diana!”
6.) isabel archer. does she make poor decisions? yes. would she have been better off without the money? double yes! but the drama is what makes her shine. i know this book is dense, but read it anyway - because if you don’t, you’ll never meet isabel, and you will miss out on one of the richest experiences of your life. it’s not a light read, but it is my favorite read.
7.) emma bovary, my favorite mess. she’s mean and unrealistic and a little stupid, but that scene at the end where she just cracks open and all her anger comes spilling out is what makes her amazing. the french have a flair for tragedy (c'est dans le fucking titre in the case of les mis!), but nothing compares to the heartbreak of watching emma, who thinks that death will be like falling asleep, when she feels the arsenic start to work and realizes she was wrong: “oh! it is beginning!” it will not be an easy death. she is not an easy character. but mon dieu, i adore her!
8.) catherine barkley. brett ashley is hemingway’s best female character, but catherine is the one who has my heart. she’s incredibly romantic and feminine and starry-eyed (with the most beautiful hair in all of literature!), but what makes her great is that this dreamy quality is a deliberately willed reaction to intense trauma. she CHOOSES to love. she is proof that you can be a girly girl and still be made of iron and steel. she’s so smart and courageous, and i am forever obsessed with her!
9.) sibyl vane, the girl who died for believing in fairy tales.
10.) tatyana larina rounds out my top ten for leaving onegin on read after he left her on read. the russians have the best heroines. i will not budge on this!
11.) yvonne de galais. she’s a ten (or in fournier-speak: “the fairy, the princess, the dream of love itself!”), but she can’t hold on to her man. 💔
12.) emma woodhouse. i’m not a huge austen fan, but i feel like out of all the girls on this list, emma would “get” me the most and go out of her way to befriend me. we are, unfortunately, very much alike.
13.) beatrice. do you know how much i suffered over choosing just one shakespeare heroine? an impossible task, but a girl who loves to laugh as much as bea does deserves to be number one. (it’s why the très witty rosalind is a close second, followed by the more tragically-inclined ophelia.)
14.) rosemary hoyt. this was the hardest one. i ultimately went with rosemary because she has all the qualities of the quintessential fitzgerald girl (young, fun, glamorous, spoiled, beautiful), but she’s much more likeable than rosalind, gloria, daisy, or even my beloved jordan. also in the top three are eleanor savage, who would be number one if she had her own book (“here am i with the brains to do everything - too bright for most men, and yet i have to descend to their level!”), and cecilia brady, hollywood princess extraordinaire and the west coast equivalent of nick carraway.
15.) amy march, america’s least favorite sister - and my personal favorite. this country has no taste. no wonder amy left!
16.) linda radlett. a little awful, but terribly funny and, in a weird way, kind of admirable in her single-minded ~pursuit of love. my mom wanted to watch the lily james version, thinking it would be a nice downton-esque period drama, and i had to tell her v. bluntly that there is nothing nice about the pursuit of love and that i couldn’t watch it with her because i knew she would hate linda. some things are just too sick-making!
17.) miss holiday golightly, travelling!
18.) lucy honeychurch. aside from being a genuinely cool girl who rejects the second-worst man in all of literature (the ultimate worst being angel clare), she also has the greatest name in the canon, which guarantees her a position in my top twenty.
19.) marguerite gautier, just because she’s actually marie duplessis and my love for marie is boundless and obsessively documented.
20.) franny glass. there aren’t many girls who possess the crazy level of self-confidence required to order a glass of milk in a restaurant while wearing a glam raccoon coat, but franny is one of the few. i related to her an embarrassing amount when i was a teenager, and while the association has faded, she remains my favorite glass sibling to this day.

Maestro Hiccups 3: Chaos Incarnate Ch 50
In an instant, You dash at the pile of toys, and begin rifling through them, trying to see if any of them was a shape shifted Collector hiding among them
You pull out many different constellation themed toys, and many planet and star themed plushes...but non of them look Collector-like. You hear the Collector's voice "You can't find me!" He giggled, while you wildly looked around for him. "I'm gonna find you Collector!" You shout, before your eyes land on a small bunny plush. You notice that the bunny has star shaped buttons for eyes, and a painted face, much like the Collector's.
You give the bunny a little poke, and you hear tye Collector's laugh again "I found you!" You shouted. The bunny in your hands shook before it turned into the childish deity. "You caught me!" He cackled before booping you on the nose "Now it's YOUR turn to hide!" He said. "Alright, Let me just get Leo and Emma really quickly." You tell him. He nods as she snaps his fingers and poofs away.
You rush to run back down the stairs, only to be stopped by a peeved Hilda "Not so fast. You still tresspassed into my home." She sneered. "Sorry! I-I'll make it up, somehow." You say, but Hilda doesn't back down. "No. You're gonna make it up NOW." She grumbles. You try to reason with her, when you see a wave of Balan's chaotic magic enveloping the world outside.
"HIT THE DECK! You shout as the wave crashes into the observatory. You feel the building rumble as Balan's hiccups transformed the building into something it wasn't. When the rumbling finally stopped, you looked around at the damage that had been done. The entire observatory had become like a giant sea temple. The telescope now had turned into a periscope while you can see fish swimming around you.
"WHAT JUST HAPPENED?!" You hear Hilda gurgle. You see that Hilda now had become a small submarine, with her weather vane now a periscope on her head as she began swam through the water. "Erm...Sorry?" You gurgle out, bubbles leaking from your mouth as you did. That was enough to push Hilda over "GET OUT OF HERE!!" She shouted in anger.
You didn't need to be told twice as you rushed out of the building, seeing the entire building was now completely submerged in water. Leo and Emma were seen floating in a nearby crate. "Leo! Emma! C'mon!" You shout. The two of them dove into the water to join you in reaching the exit. The three of you exited the building as you see what Balan's chaotic hiccups had done THIS time.
The entire world looked like it was turned into a strange mix of live action and hand drawn animation. Most of the inhabitants there SEEMED alright, but you could see there were now struggling with their new surroundings. "Oof...Balan's hiccups are making things weirder and weirder." Leo said, as a semi realistic bird came flying above and squwaked very violently at him.
A portal opened up as Your Kaylo, and the Magical Kaylo walked out of it, taking in the chaotic world that surrounded them "Whoa...Well, Inkwell Isle certainly got a makeover..." the magical Kaylo said, looking over the sunken observatory. "Yeah...But on the bright side, We found the Collector. And now it's...erm. Our turn to hide." You say.
"Well you better find a good hiding spot then!" You hear the Collector say as he floated above you, clearly enjoying the Mayhem occurring to the world. "Ready to hide?" You hear him ask. "Uh-" you don't get a chance to answer as he begins to count. "Collector...they don't have magic, so maybe count a little...higher." The Magical Kaylo says. "OK! 1...2...3..." he counts
"Ok, that should by you some time. I'll open a few portals for you to hide in another world, but you'll need to choose 1." She says. "Alright. Hurry!" Leo whsiper-shouts. Whipping out the scissors, Kaylo cuts open 3 different portals, but you have no idea where those portals could POSSIBLY lead, but you need to hide quickly

This painting is by the artist, Ferdinand Piloty, (?1786-1844?) who painted a stylistically-similar scene of Kriemhild and her mother in the blog post I still haven't completed (link here). It refers to the tragic 12th century love story of Cornish king, Tristan, and Irish princess, Isolde (aka Iseult). The tale was adapted into an opera by Richard Wagner between 1857 and 1859. I like the painting because of the gold background and intricate tree design.
The image is just one of loads of fresh material I have unearthed while making my latest scrapbook. Other items include pictures of lesser-known animals (geunons, gaurs and peccaries); various flowers; different types of fish (glass fish, icicle fish, goatfish); depictions of zodiacal signs (from Krakow's Kupa Synagogue, and Jaipur's Janta Mantar observatory); bizarre illustrations from alchemical manuscripts; Renaissance- and Baroque-era portraits of saints (Barbara, Catherine and Rose of Lima); artworks by Vincent van Gogh; watercolour paintings of fairies, oil paintings of angels, and woodcut renderings of witches; information about bees and bee-keeping; ancient Chinese and medieval European agricultural practices; the history of weather vanes; snippets of info about and paintings by Egon Schiele; the history of the dodo and its genetic relation, the solitaire (now both extinct); a brief history of the factory-village of Port Sunlight (similar to the story of Sir Titus Salt and Saltaire in West Yorkshire, it was built by an industrialist - William Hesketh Lever* - to house his estate workers); an engraving of Hester Prynne and her daughter from Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel 'The Scarlet Letter'; information and illustrations pertaining to the use of runes in the practice of magic; the constellation of Gemini as portrayed in various manuscripts (e.g. the Bedford Book of Hours, and a Turkish treatise on astrology); info about Halley's comet, the Geminid meteor shower, the festivals of Saturnalia and Lupercalia, and a woodcut from a 16th century English Shepherd's Calendar; and portraits and snippets of info about the (sadly, tragic lives) of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, Mary Queen of Scots, Lady Emma Hamilton, Isadora Duncan, Marie Antoinette and Anne Boleyn.
It's a pity I can't mass-produce my scrapbooks, because I reckon they would be bestsellers!
*The Lady Lever Art Gallery in Liverpool was established by WHL after the death of his wife, and is set in the garden village of Port Sunlight, on the Wirral.

Takemichi accomplishments
So, with Taiju’s arrival I realised a thing. I know that, unless we will have another time leap, the current timeline will result in a bad future. But this is not the worst future possible (unless more characters die during this arc).
As we know, Takemichi’s initial mission was to save Hina only. To do so, he had to get involved with Toman. He “unwillingly” befriended Toman’s member and his mission switched to save everyone.
However, Takemichi is not a superhero. He can’t succeed at everything. He failed at saving Baji and Emma, but he is blamed for Draken and Kakucho deaths just because he choose Mikey instead of the best future (Bonten timeline) while Baji and Emma deaths were just their destiny.
We forget that Takemichi has indirectly save many people through his actions.
One example are Koko and Inupi. In the future they never talk about their trauma and lived like criminals, something they didn’t want to. And it’s incredible that Takemichi has no idea about their private issue.
The other example are the Shiba siblings.
Among the main antagonists in Tokyo Revengers (specifically, Kisaki, Taiju and Izana), Taiju and for extension the Black Dragons arc was the only one unrelated to Kisaki plans to take over Toman. Kisaki himself said that he planned Draken’s death and Valhalla, and Tenjiku when Mikey fired him. He didn’t say anything about Black Dragons.
According to my interpretation, Taiju’s death in the other timeline by Hakkai or Yuzuha was something that would have occurred with or without Kisaki intervention. Kisaki only took advantage of this, and blackmailed Hakkai to merge Black Dragons and Toman.
The Shiba siblings incident was something private, not related with Toman. Hakkai and Yuzuha couldn’t bear anymore with Taiju’s abuse, so they killed him.
As for Taiju, we know that he is a violent person by nature. He believes that strength is the most important thing in life. According to the character book, Taiju and Hakkai were closed when they were little, the abuse started after their mother death. Taiju didn’t use violence with his siblings for pleasure, from his point of view he did it to educate Hakkai to become independent. As the youngest, Hakkai was probably spoiled a lot.
What he did was wrong, but in real life there are a lot of parents who are abusive towards their family.
So, I didn’t expected Taiju to call Takemichi “captain” in this chapter. Takemichi didn’t only saved his life (well, he doesn’t know he was supposed to die in the future), he succeeded in changing Hakkai (something he couldn’t do) without using violence. Takemichi made him change his value. That’s why he feel in debt with him. For the same reason he helped him in the Manila timeline (but since that timeline doesn't exist anymore, he is repaying he debt now).
In conclusion, this last arc is not bad but not good. I mean, we have two deaths, but also Kokonui reunion and maybe Shiba siblings reconciliation. Also, the two deaths didn’t die in vane. Draken wasn’t happy without Emma and Kakucho hasn’t overcome Izana’s death. Draken had a decent life in Bonten future, but Kakucho wasn’t happy at all.
P.S. Just a hope, maybe Kakucho isn’t death. His injury wasn’t deep, but between fighting Sanzu and stopping the train he exhausted himself and loses consciousness. Takemichi misunderstood the wound being deep because he saw a lot of blood on his shirt and he thinks he his death because Kakucho didn’t respond. But Takemichi is not a doctor, he doesn't know how to check the pulsations.

life is so hectic I swear to anything you'd like
anyway
I'm afraid that on this tragic night, my question is about me (selfish, narcissistic, vane- the things you could call me).
The question is simply this: what should I write next?
(you've got options ofc)
c) Elton and Orion (ocs)
d) Emma and Hestia (Any ships name ideas for these two, by the way?)
e) Dorlene
g) Nobleflower
h) More genderfluid Sirius
I) Effie and Sirius
(now, if you are wondering where a, b and f are the answer that is that I took them out and can't be bothered to correct the numbering)
as always, have a nice day
(and do not think the minute I fail that Spanish test you won't be hearing about it)
you shouldn’t have even mentioned the numbering because now I’m curious as to what the other options were lol
I’m gonna go with Effie and Sirius because they’re Effie and Sirius <33
I still have faith in you and your Spanish capabilities dw
have a good day!!

@teabooksandsweets has me wondering which classic literary characters I'd get along with. Not necessarily like best as a person, or relate to personally. Just, who could I comfortably socialize with as a casual acquaintance?
Roger Hamley from Wives and Daughters is a top choice. He's just so down-to-earth. Genuinely a nice guy, willing to engage with people on their level. I could talk with him about science for hours.
I don't know how well our personalities would mesh, but I want to be friends with Marian Halcombe from The Woman in White. A very appealing combination of energy and sense. You could have interesting conversations with her.
I would not get along with Anne Shirley in real life. I can relate to the imaginitive, inquisitive side of her personality, but her imagination goes in a "flowers and rainbows" direction that I'd find weird. Plus she's judgey. Gilbert Blythe, on the other hand, is sensible. Seems more down-to-earth, willing to engage with people where they are. If nothing else, we could talk about medical stuff.
I would get along so well with Henry Tilney and Catherine Morland. Henry might seem a bit too gregarious at first--someone who'd hang with the extroverts--but if we got into the same social circle, I'd find him easy to talk to. He's a guy you can bullshit with. He likes that back-and-forth banter that involves satirically saying dumb things, and I love those kinds of conversations. Catherine's down-to-earth and sensible, with a love of reading; I could talk easily with her. And Eleanor's lovely, too. Hanging with them would be like hanging out with my siblings. Extremely comfortable social situation.
Mr. Knightley is so considerate that whether or not we get along personally, he'd make sure I felt welcome and would chat very comfortably with me.
I'd probably have a Jane-Fairfax-ish opinion of Emma and not much care for her conversation, but I would probably also find Jane Fairfax too stand-offish and intimidating.
Anne Elliot and Fanny Price are too introverted to comfortably converse with me. We'd all be in our own heads and we'd never get the chance to find out if we have any common interests. The same probably goes for Margaret Hale; she might converse to be polite, but there probably wouldn't be genuine connection.
I would find Flambeau's personality appealing and love to listen to his wild stories, but I don't think I'm the type of person he'd care to engage in conversation.
Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane would be way too intimidating and they probably wouldn't like me. They're on such a high intellectual level that they'd probably just gossip about how dull and uninteresting I am as soon as I left the room.
Assuming I wound up in his submarine under non-kidnapping circumstances, I'd probably be drawn in by Captain Nemo's charisma, but I can't help thinking I'd sense some bad vibes despite that.
Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner from Pride and Prejudice would be great. I'd happily go on a long trip with them. But I'm not sure I'd get along with anyone else from that book. Oddly enough, Wickham is coming to mind as someone easy to talk to. If Darcy didn't come into the conversation and I didn't know his backstory, I'd probably like talking to him.

Top 10 filmed Shakesperian performance
My favorite Shakesperian performances.Few ground rules
1.No films that are inspired by Shakespeare .So no Throne of Blood ,West Side Story ,Forbidden Planet ,10 Things I Hate About You etc
2.Each production only gets one block .cause if I didnt do that this would be flooded with great performances from just one or two productions
3.ONE role per actor
10.Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson as Benedict and Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing (1993)
So I was tempted to put either Michael Keatons Dogberry or Denzel Washingtons Don Pedro here ,but I had to include this smart bickering couple played brillaintly by Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson .Also my favorite Shakesperian performance by Branagh (Though I havent seen him as Iago in Othello yet )
