can't sleep and brain is on overload so i'm breaking out what is possibly a Controversial until dawn opinion
I don't believe Emily and Mike physically cheated on Matt and Jess with each other.
there's a Ton of evidence seemingly contradicting that, sure, but when you look at it it's Incredibly circumstantial and not the full story
Mike and Emily hugging after she tells Matt she's going to find Sam?
we never actually hear what they're talking about, it could have been a friendly greeting, or hell it could have been comforting because, y'know, IT'S THE YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THEIR FRIENDS DISAPPEARING AND IT'S KINDA THEIR FAULT
if they were cheating, surely they'd kiss, rather than a pretty chaste hug? okay, sure, there's the risk of being caught, and Ash does of course see them, but I don't really see anything romantic in their body language (though that might be just me)
Emily getting all jealous and possessive and picking a fight with Jess in the lodge?
I don't think that's coming because her and Mike are secretly involved still, I call that Maybe some lingering romantic feelings from what was likely a shitty breakup and mostly bitterness that her best friend is dating her ex that just a year ago she was helping deter another girl from
the big kicker some people whip out is the unpopular dialogue choice when the fire tower is falling, if Matt saw them through the viewfinder, in which Emily basically admits to cheating, right?
except. she doesn't.
her voice in that scene is the biggest thing to me. most of the time, Emily is angry. aggressive. but in that scene, she knows she might die, she's Terrified, and her only hope of getting to safety is yelling at her insistently that she's cheating on him.
"Christ, Matt, we were just talking!" and 'I- I was confused!" and "Please... Matt, I'm sorry!" are her most important lines in that scene, and her delivery is Desperate. she basically whimpers before her stuttered "I", which makes sense. most of Matt's non-choice dialogue, of which there is admittedly very little, makes him sound like a peacekeeper, a mediator. the way he tries to placate Emily when they first arrive, or how he apologises to Ash after scaring her? not the aggressive, fight-starting guy the player can make him be.
so to be Screaming at her in a life or death situation? she knew there was no getting through to him, and she had to say what he wanted to hear if she had any chance of him getting her to safety
none of her words are an outright confession, just enough to Seem like one, and hopefully be apologetic enough that he'll save her so they can talk later, back on safe ground
the "confused" line I call back to 'Maybe lingering romantic feelings leftover from a recent shitty breakup', I haven't heard many cheating confessions so I don't know how many try the confusion justification, but I don't think it fits here
(also, confirmation needed, but on a video I watched of this fire tower scene, I saw a comment saying the devs confirmed she's lying here about actual physical cheating having happened? I don't have a source for that if it's true, but if anyone does that would be really cool and helpful)
and on Mike's part, I look to simply every single thing centred around Jess he did in the game. which was a Lot. they have such a great dynamic, he's clearly very devoted to her, desperate and broken and angry when she's taken and he can't save her, and I just don't see him cheating on her at all, not even with Emily.
so, yeah. while there might have been some emotional stuff left on Emily's end, which does make her kinda shitty since she's with Matt, I don't think they did anything physical while committed to other people like some think they did. Mike I think too devoted to Jess and probably unwilling to go back to Emily, probably associating the relationship with the twins' disappearing. Emily I think does genuinely care about Matt enough to not act on any possible leftover feelings, and this is speculation on my part but she probably wouldn't even if she's just using Matt as a Mike replacement because she's so bitter at Jess for 'stealing her man', but wouldn't want to do the same thing in return to her because she thinks she's better than that i.e better than Jess.
if y'all think differently, I'd love to hear why! or, if you agree with me, I'd still love to hear more! I love thinking about this kinda thing and hearing other people's perspectives

Oh, I have a fic to request. One where Emily leaves the safe room during the whole bite thing and while she's lost and wandering around she ends up stumbling upon Josh
If you told Emily last year that her first real boyfriend would dump her for her best friend and then attempt to shoot her, she’d laugh in your face and call you crazy. Now all she wants to do is find a way out of this hellhole.
Emily was walking in the freezing cold after almost being shot trying and failing to be calm. When all of a sudden, she notices a shed and hoped there was something she could use against the creatures.
Inside the shed, Emily looked around but came up short. However she was surprised to see Josh tied up to a pole.
“Josh? What happened to you?” Emily asked.
“A misunderstanding.” Josh mumbled.
“What happened.” Emily repeated annoyed.
“It was just a prank! I don’t know what happened to Jess, I swear.”
At first Emily was mad, then she was confused, and now she’s mad and confused. But Josh knew the mountains better than she did so him acting weird wasn’t going to mess up out this rat infested dump.
“Josh, honey, do you have the keys to the cable car?” Emily asked condescendingly.
Josh nods and Emily unties him from the pole.
“Ok so now we’re going to find our way back to the station.” Emily explained
When walking to the cable car, Emily thought about her life and friendships. Emily and Josh weren’t that close, it’s not like Emily hated him or anything. They just hung out in different crowds and it definitely didn’t get any better after the prank. Emily felt like crying any time Josh talked about his sisters. The guilt was eating her alive.
When they finally arrived to the cable car without any problems. Emily quickly hurried inside the car, while Josh looked around sadly before entering.
Emily was described as mean and selfish her whole life. Sometimes Matt would say that if she made him mad enough. She hated it. She could be as nice as Hannah, as dependable as Sam, as funny as Ashley or Jessica. It wasn’t fair! She thought it was time to change that.
“Josh?” Emily said quietly.
“Hm?” Josh replied while looking out of the cable car window.
“Do you think I’m nice, kind and funny?” Emily asked hopefully.
“Sometimes, you remind me of Beth.” Josh said reminisced.
After that conversation, Emily and Josh spent the rest of the cable car ride in silence thinking about their future with the possibility of never seeing their friends again.
(I don’t like the ending but I couldn’t think about anything better 😭)

Sam x Mike (Until Dawn) Angst
She wasn’t supposed to move.
But she did, and now—!
Now Mike was suffering for it.
She could only stare blankly as he was lifted up by his jaw, the wendigo—Hannah, it was Hannah!—screeching in his face with a finality.
“No,” She rasped, throat unbearably dry and eyes stinging as the sounds of his struggling grunts and screams filled the air. Not Mike. Not after everything they’d been through tonight.
She faintly saw Emily bolting out of the lodge, leaving just her and Mike inside with these monsters. Sam was frozen still, eyes unmoving on Mike’s face, on his shining brown eyes coated in pain and agony as he began to lose the life in them.
Please, please, no…
Sam backed away, closer to the exit, the wooden floorboards creaking under her weight. Mike was thrown aside, Hannah turning with an abrupt speed to come in her direction, sneering and crying loudly.
Sam froze, eyes lowered down to where Mike lay, unmoving. His eyes, frozen forward. His face, falling eerily blank. He was dead.
Because of her.
She wasn’t supposed to move. But she did. And now?
Mike was dead. Michael Munroe, the class heartthrob and former class president (a shitty one at that). Mike, Michael, who she always claimed to hate and loathed to hang around—a lie, god, it was such a lie—was dead because of her.
And you know? The shitty part was—after everything tonight, she just wanted him to be okay. She cared about the others, of course she did. But Mike was there with her, down in those mines. She saved him in the sanatorium. He freed her from Josh’s binds around her.
And yet, despite all of that, despite the fact that Sam finally realized just what it was about Mike that frustrated her so much—she fucked it all up in one movement.
She… Sam was… This was all her fault.
She sprinted for the exit the moment Hannah lost interest in her. Her hand slamming on the light switch, torching everything living… and dead… inside.
The burst of flames is forceful enough to push her away from the lodge, landing yards away as she rolled painfully in the snow. She lay there, cheek burning against the ice as she stared emptily, back aching with burns as her vision darkening with exhaustion and grief.
She could feel Chris trying to shake her by the shoulder, trying to get her to get up. She doesn’t move, feeling a tear run down her nose. She killed Mike. She killed him. It was all her fault.
There’s the very faint, distant sound of a helicopter warbling. It’s growing closer.
Rescue was coming.
But it was too little too late.
Sam blankly sat up, distantly aware of Chris close beside her, speaking to her, but her ears are too muffled, too focused on the helicopter as it creeped into view above the lodge.
Ashley’s crying in relief, still covered in pig’s blood. Emily’s hugging herself, curled into a ball, her eyes haunted with what she’d been through. Chris is trying to get Sam to look at him, his eyes watery and his voice raspy with how much screaming he’d done tonight.
And Sam?
Sam just wants Mike.
But she can’t have that.
Because…
Fuck.
She wasn’t supposed to move.
