i don’t want to be a contrarian and op is right that it IS wayyyy more difficult to travel internationally in the US than in europe but i do feel like this is a bit exaggerated or depends a lot on where you live. my roundtrip plane tickets to paris during peak tourist season with inflexible dates came to $600. let’s say you stay a week and pay $50 a night for lodging (i’m assuming you’re staying in hostels or in an airbnb private room). that’s $350. travel + lodging = less than a grand. obviously you’re going to want to spend money on food and do touristy things etc so it could quickly become a lot more than that, and a grand IS prohibitively expensive for a lot of people - that’s definitely a lot of money.

but if you make over 100k? you can probably afford to spare roughly a grand to go on a week-long vacation at least at some point in your life. or at least not be like “i don’t know if i’ll ever be able to afford leaving.”

also, again a factor of where you live and it might be because i’ve spent a lot of time living near the US-canada border but people do casually go back and forth quite frequently.

#i also notice that a lot of americans especially white LMC have a kind of mental block against leaving the country #some of it's xenophobia some of it is legitimate economic concerns some of it is the perception that it would be impossibly difficult #financially or otherwise and it's something that the 'elites' do #i remember my mom having a convo with some people an hour or so south of the canadian border #who were oggling at her canadian license plates and asking her 'how far is canada' etc #and were somehow struck for the first time with the fact that they could go north and visit canada #it just had simply never occurred to them

do you think there's a reason we say "braver than any US Marine" specifically? like,,, are Marines known for being the bravest branch of the military? or are they just easiest to top? cause no one seems to speak about them outside of like everyone being braver than them.... almost makes you wonder if it is impressive?

#and also i'm canadian so idk #no one talks about marines though #i hear about the army #and sometimes the navy #is a marine not LIKE the navy?#they both sound watery #i think the navy sounds cooler you get to be a sailor #but then the being in the military part is shitty #you should just be committed to sailing #for the joy of the water #i looked it up and marines say they're an 'elite fighting force'#so i guess the answer is they are supposed to be the coolest?#idk there's so much contradiction like they're a maritime land force #so water AND land #and similiarly i learned navy seals are like elite navy guys and the seal stands for #sea air and land?#so it's like!!!#PICK A PLACE #stop trying to have it ALL!#you don't see the air force out on the ocean or on the land!!!#well #i hope #right so um i need to just stop rambling and post this #bye <3

M. O. Drouin au club Canadien ---- L'honorable Oscar Drouin, ministre du commerce, de l'industrie et des affaires municipales était hier, l'hôte d'honneur au dîner des maîtres-imprimeurs de Montréal tenu au Club Canadien.

Dans une causerie à l'issue de ce diner, Thon. M. Drouin déclara "Les Canadiens", dit-il, "doivent faire en sorte d'avoir leur part dans les contrôles économiques établis par le gouvernement fédéral".

Puis le conférencier s'unit le plus sincèrement du monde à ceux qui demandent à la population de souscrire le plus possible à l'emprunt de la Victoire qui permet à ceux qui ne peuvent aller combattre d'aider à poursuivre l'effort de guerre.

M. Drouin félicita chaleureusement les membres de l'Association des maîtres-imprimeurs de Mont réal pour les beaux succès qu'il ont jusqu'ici réalisés.

Présenté par M. Emile Arbour, président de l'Association, M. Drouin fut remercié par M. Oscar Roy. MM. Alfred G. Sinel, president de la Employing Printers Association of Montreal et Esdras Thérien, d'Ottawa et président de Association des maîtres-imprimeurs d'Ottawa-Hull, prenaient place à la table d'honneur. M Charles Holmes, secrétaire de l'Association, dit aussi quelques mots.
