It was an extremely hot day when we shot Fashion editorial for #fortlauderdalemagazine this was shot with mix of ambient light and strobes, I wanted to give a pop in the picture to I used grided 20 degree honey comb on model left and exposed it to 1 stop under ambient reading. This shot of the Cardinal wearing his beautiful red robes was only possible if we did it during the show. I had set-up a studio backstage and shot the black background shots 20 minutes before stage time and the main Metal Hammer cover was shot in the short interval during the show. I was shooting live shots of the show as well so I had to get back to my studio set-up, in time to bag the cover image. True to the tour mangers word, the Cardinal walked in ever so slowly with a Ghoulette on each arm, swinging the incense burner. He never said a word as the sweet infused scent of the incense filled the air and the sound of Gregorian Monks chanted from the arena's interval music. It was honestly so surreal. I pointed to my marker, checked my lights, adjusted a few settings and clicked away. I moved in the 2 Ghoulettes for the cover shot, asked them to put their hands on his shoulder and clicked away. The entire shoot was over within 6 minutes. The Cardinal blessed me and sauntered out leaving a trail of incense smoke behind him. I turned to my colleagues and asked if that really just happened? This remains my favorite image from my entire time shooting with Cancer Treatment Centers of America. Kimalea, like most of the cancer survivors I met over the years, has an enthusiasm for life that I think you only get when you're faced with the possibility of your life being taken away. And Kimalea in particular had an energy that made it difficult for @seanvidbox and I (though much younger than her) to keep up with her. And right after we shot this, a pack of coyotes tried to lure her dog into a trap by pretending to play with the dog.
