so i'm still thinking about a rival most vial and i can't stop imagining eli joining an adventurer party and as the new guy, he naturally becomes the errand boy
so they send him to the griffin's claw to restock on the potions they're going to need for their next job, but he comes back with way too much leftover money and everyone's like "hey eli, what the fuck did you do. please tell me you didn't steal these? come on we can't afford to get on mr beake's bad side, he owns the only decent potion shop in the entire scar"
but eli's like "no guys it's okay, i'm actually dating the owner, so i get the family discount"
no one believes him, because ambrose beake doesn't like ANYBODY, there's no way their sunshine himbo managed to woo him
so eli has no choice but to introduce the party to ambrose
and ambrose, who promised dawn he would try and be more sociable, makes small talk with the party, and at one point he jokes that, "yeah, i'll give your party discounts on all the potions you buy from me from now on, but in return you have to make sure nothing happens to my boyfriend's pretty face"
the party all get a kick out of that, and it ends up becoming a running joke for them
one time eli gets a black eye on a job and their archer starts wailing, "nooooo!! that's our money maker! quick, we gotta heal him! i can't go back to paying full price for healing potions. do you have any idea how many of those we go through per job?"

Review: A Rival Most Vial by RK Ashwick
@ashen-crest you’ve done it again.
STOP IT WITH THIS PERFECT COZY
As if I wasn’t already going to go bonkers over the chapter titles being potion instructions or the gorgeous graphics. As if I wasn’t going to squeal in delight with the potion diagrams and illustrations. As if I wasn’t going to cry at how precious these two MCs are.
ARMV is a book that you want to showcase on your shelves and brag about it to your friends like Ambrose brags to his customers about Eli. You want to hold hands with it and have tea and curl up with your automaton to read to it. You want to clutch it to your chest and never, ever let go.
I want to crawl into this book and live forever in Rosemond street with these shops and lovely friends. I thought Ambrose was going to be my favorite grumpy boy and then my sweet, sweet boy Eli just had to exist and had to be so perfect for Ames. Oh, to be courted by Eli Valenz… is there anything more romantic?!?
Smooshing these two rivals together for a potion commission was the perfect plot to highlight their joking and absolutely swoon-worthy enemy to friend to love relationship. I cannot handle how freaking precious their growth was, and UGH that ending just had me screaming and shaking and desperately wanting to climb into the pages and hug my new favorite characters. These two are made for each other, and their love is so pure that I had to stop reading so I could take a deep breath. I almost forgot they were fictional.
Not only do we have excellent MCs, we have a cast of absolute perfection (and representation). The shopkeepers are not only diverse and unique, they are genuine and well-written and make this such a well rounded story. They add so much to an already rich plot and provide such heartwarming friendships that this little found family is my new favorite and I could just sit on a bench on Rosemond and watch them forever doing the most mundane tasks like sweeping.
First off, I need a little side story of Tom getting into trouble and going on her own adventure. Second, I need an entire novel of Lily going around and being absolutely iconic. Third, can we please have an epilogue where Eli punches Pearce to defend Ambrose’s honor?
Do you want to know the worst part? That I can’t read it for the first time ever again. Do you know how offensive that is? This book has no right to be so cozy and warm and comforting. How dare this be so utterly incredible that it ruins me so thoroughly.
Anyway, I’m off to beg Ashwick to write her own fanfiction so I can have more Ambrose being grumpy and Eli slaying dragons in Ambrose’s name.
This is an arc read and I’m leaving a review voluntarily, but let me tell you, none of this review is exaggerated in any way.

Don't question the process Ambrose just look pretty
After @ashen-crest made this post about RPS AUs, I desperately wanted to draw everyone in ballgowns. The sketch sat in my notebook for months and now it is fully realized.
In my head this is an AU of the Icefall AU where Ambrose has to be brought onto the team to take down a different sort of kingpin and also Eli has a huge crush on him even though he's a criminal, and Dawn Knows and is Fully Enabling this behavior
(We're gonna call this a slightly late Christmas gift instead of a very late/early birthday gift)

writing advice: you should start your first chapter off with a bang. in media res, action-packed, pull your reader in, take no prisoners-
my first chapter:
[Eli] nodded to the manic array of lists before them. “Did the desserts help you think through all this?”
He set a hand on Ambrose’s back, and Ambrose leaned into him. “The cakes were paramount to our success.”
Eli nodded in mock solemnity. “No plan without flan,” he said sagely.
“All right.” Ambrose tried to pull away; Eli tugged him right back.
“No scheme without whipped cream. No idea without a tortilla—”
“Do you want to hear the plan or not?”

currently editing A Captured Cauldron chapter 1, and while this part needs cleaning up, I'm enjoying it:
Eli stood in the doorway, dressed for his adventurer training: leather jerkin, bracers, a belt made to hold weapons and potions. A far cry from his old merchant clothing, but Ambrose could never get enough of the new look. He dared let his gaze roam over the outfit once, twice—and caught sight of two distinctly non-adventuring items filling his arms.
A stack of letters and a familiar little automaton.
“What’s this?” He strode over, pointedly ignoring Eli in favor of Tom the automaton: an oversized beer mug contraption equipped with a broom head, fork arms, and legs made of daggers and wheels. “Is this the little scamp who spilled my coffee this morning?”
He plucked Tom from Eli’s arms and planted a kiss on the top of her broom head. Eli gave him a look.
“Anything for the larger scamp who cleaned up the spilled coffee?”
“Hm.” Ambrose looked him over once more and feigned thoughtfulness. “No.”

these first few chapters of ACC are just an utterly shameless stream of "how much can I show my own love of Ambrose Beake? ah, by making everyone else love him, too."
“Sandon, Evie, this is Dawn. She runs the Whirling Wand Emporium down the street from me.” [Ambrose] set a hand on Eli’s back. “And this is Eli, my boyfriend.”
Evie’s eyes went wide. Sandon looked struck for a moment, then quickly covered it and shook Eli’s hand with grace. Dawn had to stifle a giggle.
Ambrose, the utterly oblivious heartbreaker.
then, later:
Eli hesitated. “How long do you think Sandon’s been crushing on Ames?”
“Years, I bet,” Dawn said. “How many disappointed people did you count at today’s convention?”
“At least five.” Eli smiled. “You think he knows?”
“Oh, he has no idea.”

“Cool,” [Eli] muttered. “So, now I’m an adventurer who can’t get a quest with his own party and a helpless ex-potioneer. Love it.”
“You’re not either of those and you know it.” Dawn prodded him. “Ignore them. You can’t stop their gossip anyway.” She grinned. “And once you watch Ambrose destroyed Xavion in the debates today, you’ll be able to whisk him off to an after-party and make out with him in front of everyone.”
“I don’t think he’d like that.”
“But you would.”
Eli’s lips quirked upward.
