GODPARENTS OF GRAND DUCHESS ELENA VLADIMIROVNA
Grand Duchess Elena Vladimirovna, the youngest child and only daughter of Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich of Russia and his German-born wife Grand Duchess Maria Pavlova (née Duchess of Mecklenburg-Schwerin), was born on 29 January (O.S. 17) 1882 in Saint Petersburg. She was christened on 12 March in the Grand Palace Church of Catherine Palace, Tsarskoe Selo. Her godparents were:
ALEXANDER III, EMPEROR OF RUSSIA - her paternal uncle, who had succeeded the Russian throne just a year prior, was named as one of her godparents. He was highly reactionary in domestic affairs and reversed some of the liberal reforms of his father, Alexander II. He was present at his niece's christening.
FREDERICK FRANCIS II, GRAND DUKE OF MECKLENBURG-SCHWERIN - her maternal grandfather was another of her godparents. A Romanov by descent (being a great-grandson of Tsar Paul), he held the rank of Prussian general and was also a Russian General Field Marshal.
MARIE, GRAND DUCHESS CONSORT OF MECKLENBURG-SCHWERIN - her step-grandmother was also named as her godparent. The third wife of Frederick Francis II, whose marriage produced four children, including Prince Hendrik, consort of Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands and father of Queen Juliana.
GRAND DUCHESS CATHERINE MIKHAILOVNA OF RUSSIA - A first cousin of her grandfather, Catherine was one of the two godparents present at her christening. She was the wife of Duke Georg August of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, and a great philanthropist and many of the organisations she supported and helped to create still operate today.
ALEXANDRINE, GRAND DUCHESS OF MECKLENBURG-SCHWERIN - her maternal great-grandmother, a Prussian-born princess was also her godparent. She was a sister of Empress Alexandra Feodorovna-consort of Nicholas I-who was Elena's great-grandmother on her father’s side. In 1822, she married Paul Frederick, Hereditary Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (himself, a grandson of Russian Tsar Paul). Their marriage was generally considered unhappy, he was a military man who had little time for or interest in his wife and family. Alexandrine, by contrast, was a devoted mother who tenderly raised her children and actively cultivated their cultural pursuits.

2003 Cottbus Turnier der Meister
So this is one of my favorite meets of all time and that might seem like a random thing to say about a random world cup qualifier from a non Olympic year held in March.
First let’s just start with how stunningly amazing this field is:
2004 Olympic vault gold medalist Monica Rosu
2001 World floor silver medalist Daniele Hypolito
2004 European AA Champion Alina Kovich
2002 World floor gold medalist Elena Gomez
2003 World floor gold medalist Daiane dos Santos
2003 World beam gold medalist Fan Ye
2000 European floor gold medalist Ludivine Furnon
2000 Olympic floor and vault gold medalist Elena Zamolodchikova
Oksana Chusovitina, Anna Pavlova, Beth Tweddle whose resumes I do not need to list
as well as Oana Ban a beautiful gymnast who should have had a career I did not need to list.
I love watching great gymnasts in low key low stakes meets and this is just delightful and for a meet in March there is relatively little splatting.
But the sentimental reasons have to do with the fact that @darthmelyanna wrote an entire book chapter set at this random 2003 gymnastics meet and I will have a soft spot in my heart for it forever.  I think she and I picked it just based on the date and relative location for plot purposes in the novel but that’s also when I discovered “hey this entire meet is on youtube”.  And thus the start of “OMG so many meets are just on youtube...”

2022 recap
in this post: movies/tv, books, and music—my favorites of each / what i enjoyed in 2022
movies
favorites i watched for the first time this year:
showgirls, daisies, ride your wave, the king of comedy, sympathy for mr. vengeance, night is short, walk on girl, top gun: maverick, the shape of water, atonement, au revoir les enfants
overall favorites:
love exposure, nosferatu the vampyre, fiddler on the roof, midsommar, casablanca, amelie, joker, ex machina, the prestige, florida project, nightmare before christmas, carol, texas chainsaw massacre, atonement, prisoners, ride your wave, fantastic mr. fox, the wicker man, au revoir les enfants, every mike myers film
i've never really been that into movies, but having a partner who is a film expert has helped me broaden my horizons a ton. he has introduced me to a lot of great (and a lot of terrible) movies this year lol. if you're reading this, thank you!
2. books
books i read this year:
the reader by bernhard schlink, the fall by albert camus, a trial by jury by graham burnett, macbeth by william shakespeare (reread), the trial by franz kafka, convenience store woman by sayaka murata, kitchen by banana yoshimoto, the days of abandonment by elena ferrante, the new me by halle butler, trick mirror: reflections on self-delusion by jia tolentino, freshwater by akwaeke emezi, earthlings by sayaka murata, men without women by haruki murakami, assembly by natasha brown, goodnight punpun (1) by inio asano
overall favorites:
she's come undone by wally lamb, the fall by albert camus, the stranger by camus, freshwater by akwaeke emezi, a double life by karolina pavlova, the bell jar by sylvia plath, convenience store woman by sayaka murata, kitchen by banana yoshimoto, trick mirror by jia tolentino
i think a lot of the books i read this year are now in my list of overall favorites because, since i graduated from college in may, i've actually had time to read on my own terms. i'm sure there will be more great literature to add to the list in 2023!
3. music
music i listened to this year:
my top songs of 2022
overall favorite artists (way too many to list, but i tried to narrow it down):
grimes, lamp, bright eyes, the microphones, faye webster, bruno major, leonard cohen, jeff buckley, yeule, fiona apple, soccer mommy, blood orange, death grips, hannah diamond, your arms are my cocoon, rico nasty, midori, vampillia, panchiko, jeff rosenstock, cake, mitski, the fall of troy, my chemical romance, yuragi, world’s end girlfriend, slowdive, radiohead, melt-banana, cfcf, cannibal corpse, i hate myself, orchid, nicki minaj, tierra whack, angel olsen, bruno major, modest mouse, fka twigs, twice, machine girl, lucy dacus, beach bunny, sophie, bleach, la dispute, pinkpantheress
this is horrible, but i am so bad at actually listening to full albums, start to finish. usually i just play my favorite songs by my favorite artists over and over. one of my goals this year is to listen to more albums!
another one of my goals for the year is to narrow down my favorites and turn all of these lists into top 10s.
thanks for reading!

GODPARENTS OF PRINCE IOANN KONSTANTINOVICH
Prince Ioann Konstantinovich was born on 5 July 1886 in Pavlovsk Palace, Saint Petersburg. He was the eldest son of Grand Duke Konstantin Konstantinovich of Russia and his German-born wife Grand Duchess Elizabeth Mavrikievna. He was christened on 23 July at 1:30 in the afternoon in Strelna by the Confessor of Their Imperial Majesties, Archpriest Yanyshev. His godparents were:
ALEXANDER III, EMPEROR OF RUSSIA - his father's first cousin was named as one of his numerous godparents. He was highly reactionary in domestic affairs and reversed some of the liberal reforms of his father, Alexander II. He was absent at his young cousin's christening.
GRAND DUKE KONSTANTIN KONSTANTINOVICH OF RUSSIA - his paternal grandfather was one of his numerous godparents. He was the Viceroy of Poland from 1862 to 1863. His real influence on internal affairs after 1868 was insignificant.
PRINCE MORITZ OF SAXE-ALTENBURG - his maternal grandfather was another of his numerous godparents. He was of Romanov descent, through his grandmother Grand Duchess Elena Pavlova of Russia (daughter of Emperor Paul I).
GRAND DUCHESS OLGA NIKOLAEVNA OF RUSSIA, QUEEN CONSORT OF WÜRTTEMBERG - his great-aunt was one of his many godparents. She was the older sister of his grandfather Grand Duke Konstantin. Attractive, cultured and intelligent, she had been considered to be one of the most eligible princesses in Europe. In 1846, she married Crown Prince Karl of Württemberg. She was absent at the christening of his great-nephew.
GRAND DUCHESS OLGA KONSTANTINOVNA OF RUSSIA, QUEEN CONSORT OF GREECE - his paternal aunt was another of his godparents. In 1867, she married King George I of Greece (born a Danish prince), and had many children. As Queen, she was a popular figure and became involved in social and charitable work.
ERNST I, DUKE OF SAXE-ALTENBURG - his maternal great-uncle was listed as one of his godparents. In 1853 he succeeded his father as Duke of Saxe-Altenburg. He was of a retiring disposition and he took little active part in running the country.
MARIE FRIEDRIKE, DOWAGER DUCHESS OF SAXE-MEININGEN - his maternal great-grandmother was one of his godparents. Born a Princess of Hesse-Kassel, she married the Duke of Saxe-Meiningen, with whom two children (seventeen years apart) were born.
MARIE ANNE, HEREDITARY PRINCESS OF SCHAUMBURG-LIPPE - his maternal aunt, the favourite sister of his mother, was also named as one of his godparents. In 1882, she married the Hereditary Prince of Schaumburg-Lippe with whom she had nine children.

New Beginnings
Tumblr media
In between the tragedy and the meme, 2020 has already proved to be different. This affected both the 26th  Sarajevo Film Festival as well as the 14th  edition of Talents Sarajevo, held online for the first time ever. Sure, under this year's theme NEW BEGINNINGS lie many old and well-tested elements, only this time we tried to build new structures out of them. Or to strengthen past bonds, which was the case with Sarajevo Talent Press' dedicated partner Goethe-Institut Bosnia and Herzegovina.
It is not like there was much of a choice, for Zoom's flat grid has been omnipresent in the past months – as a new norm/al of sorts, and one that prompts a new understanding of this particular (also literal) merge between the reality and the moving image. Wonderful coincidence, as the online format allowed Kevin B. Lee to tune in from Berlin and discuss FILM CRITICISM ON SCREENS. Our second Goethe-Institut invitee, Jacqueline Nsiah, also joined in from Germany and opened the horizons even wider, by taking us on A PERSONAL(ISED) JOURNEY THROUGH SUB-SAHARAN CINEMA.
Mentored again by Dana Linssen and Yoana Pavlova, the 2020 all-girl team worked slightly differently this year – the five participants produced one, longer film review, paired with an “audiovisual diary” or “impression.” In addition, their opinions and surmises about the direction we are all headed to were quite enriching, yet there are only so many zrinks in an online festival...
Dina Pokrajac, Croatia
What primarily attracted me to film is what Barthes calls “mythologizing of the myth” – the possibility of re-using images that are known to us as part of dominant mythologies in order to speak about ourselves, our lives, and the world we live in from our own perspective.

How liberating is to write about what you love after days of self-isolation sentenced me to a slightly different way of being: one that permitted me to watch dozens of films, but didn’t allow me to share my emotions and thoughts with other people.

Propelled by my Philosophy degree, I started reading film theory and being enchanted by the intertwined nature of reality and fiction, forever in love with cinema as the only tool of representation of memory.

To me, the true challenge is to be fair in respecting the hard work put into making films, and offering fair, nuanced, and thoughtful reflections.

There is something healing about films, in how they give us insight into worlds unknown; into perspectives different to our own that send us on a journey of introspection and self-reflection.
