Night vision is a growing worry among motorists. It seems like new cars have ever-more-powerful headlights, which ruin your ability to see anything other than a retina-scarring cone of light. And that’s if you’re the one driving the new car. If you’re like me, and operate a rickety old car whose headlights are most generously described as “present,” you can easily be blinded by every asshole on the road who can fork over a down payment.

Worst of all, there’s no way to get back at them. Until now.

A couple years ago, I was introduced to a guy who was really into headlights. Making sure they had good bulbs, clear lenses, cutoffs, properly aligned, all that important stuff that nobody does. The thing he wanted to express to me most about my car, of course, is that it had shitty wiring feeding the headlights. When the headlights turn on, they’re limited by how much juice they can pull through that shitty wiring. He recommended that I get thicker, beefier wiring, like the kind you’d use to run a welder, or accidentally electrify your neighbour’s fence when you’re sick of him playing party rock at 4am.

At the time, the price of copper was pretty high, so I never took the opportunity to follow his advice. After getting an impromptu suntan on my drive back from work the other day, I now see the error of my ways. A quick visit to a nearby electrical substation equipped me with some exceptionally thick wire, and a bit of hammering and crimping got me the rest of the way. And of course the stock headlights wouldn’t do much: a subsequent quick visit to the airport filled the trunk of my car with some of those sodium bulbs that they use to warn airplanes not to crash into the airport. Perfect, I thought, and went along my merry way.

I didn’t have to wait long until a RAV4 bumbled into my path, shining its misaimed lights directly into my soul. Now, at last, the moment of my revenge was at hand. Also at hand: the high-beam switch. The exact memory of what happened next is a bit jumbled, but I’m pretty sure that the antagonistic Toyota was erased from existence only femtoseconds before my battery caught fire and exploded. Scientists are still confused about how, even long after my car has left the area, there remains a cone of perfectly lit road at all hours of the day, hovering ominously.

You may wonder what this whole Awesome Coffee Club thing is all about. Today I was reminded what it’s all about:

In 2019, the unpaid intern who runs this tumblr account visited Sierra Leone’s Kono District. Kono is the among the most impoverished communities in the world due to a long history of enslavement, colonialism, and civil war. A decade ago, Kono’s healthcare system was in a state of collapse--clinics had no running water or electricity or paid staff, and inconsistent supplies of medications and other necessities.

As a result, Kono was the epicenter of the global maternal mortality crisis: One out of every seventeen women could expect to die in childbirth. Over 10% of children died before the age of five.

Beginning in 2014, Partners in Health began working with Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Health to bring change. This started with the basics at the region’s hospital, Koidu Government Hospital: running water, 24-hour electricity, and hiring nurses, community healthworkers, cooks, facilities management staff, and so much more.

At the time, KGH’s maternity ward had a dirt floor. Many people were dying for want of an emergency C-section or a blood transfusion. By 2019, this was getting better--two functioning operating rooms were able to perform C-sections, and a blood bank could address postpartum hemorrhaging. But it was still inadequate, and maternal and child mortality were horrifyingly routine.

To address the crisis, PIH Sierra Leone directors Jon Lascher and Dr. Baillor Barrie wanted to build a world-class maternal and child health center that could save thousands of lives yearly while also serving as a teaching hospital to train the next generation of Sierra Leonean healthcare workers. They told us they needed $25,000,000 to break ground, and would probably eventually need another $25,000,000 to support the hospital’s operation over its first few years.

I am, as unpaid interns go, doing quite well, but not THAT well. So our family committed what we could and asked others to join us, and within two years, we passed that $25,000,000 goal. Together, we’ve now raised close to $40,000,000.

Today, I visited the site of the Maternal Center of Excellence, the first wards of which will hopefully open next year. Nearly all of the construction team are from Kono, and 65% of them are women--they work as welders, engineers, planners, laborers, and so much more. You see three of them above. I had the privilege of talking with them about this project. The young woman to the right, Success, told me that her dream is to work for the hospital her whole life, helping to maintain and support it. One of the other women told me, “We are passionate about this work because it is the future of our country. And we know that we and our friends will someday give birth here.” I am so proud that our projects support their training and livelihood, and so grateful to have them as colleagues in this work.

The hospital--which will include over 100 maternal beds, a NICU, and enough operating suites to perform over 10 emergency C-sections per day, will also require ongoing funding for staff, stuff, systems, maintenance, and more. Our hope is that open-ended projects like the Awesome Coffee Club and Awesome Socks Club can help provide that funding, although the most efficient way to support this project is to donate directly!

So that’s why this tumblr, and the awesome coffee club, exists. World-class maternal and infant healthcare is coming to Kono, a wonderful and too long impoverished by colonialism and extractive capitalism. It is only a first step. There is so long to go. But what a first step.

Of Course, I had to think about this a little. Ghost team is so versatile that they theoretically could do anything, but here's my evaluation.

Logan: Welder. I cannot explain this but yeah he's a welder. Actually I can explain it, it's about being structurally necessary but invisible to untrained eye. I think he'd be in commercial welding, and he'd take a lot of pride in the builds he worked on. Also I want to see him in the mask, and sweaty...

Hesh: I desperately want this man to be a dog trainer. That's what I think he wants to do, Hesh would want to work with animals. As far as trades go, I think he'd probably do HVAC or residential carpentry. I have only known HVAC guys to be incredibly kind and understanding and I think the odd hours would suit him. Then for carpentry I think he'd want to see a project all the way through, you don't always get that in commercial carpentry since there's a lot of bouncing between projects.

Keegan: Genuinely? Farming. That's what he'd want to do. I know that's not exactly the blue collar work you're looking for, but I think Keegan would love it. The self sufficiency of it would appeal to him more than anything. Trade wise... maybe electrical? He's got good hands for it, and is smart enough for the detail work. He'd like the set hours of it, being able to go home at the end of the day and not think about work. Plus I can't imagine he'd be helping clean up at job sites and... yeah electrician core.

Later they start working together as ninjas and it makes they relationship improve faster. They are good teammates, who can work together good and chick someone’s ass.

Later:

Jay finnaly decides to ask Nya on a date and she agrees, beacuse she wants to find out if something would come from this.

The date turns into a battlefield against their enemies. But surprisingly, it didn't ruin it for her. Fighting side by side actually made the date more interesting and broke the ice.

As their first date turned out to be successfully, they start going out more often.

On the Destiny's Bounty they discover that both are interested in engineering and tinkering with gadgets.

When they work together on something Nya is often a welder with her fire powers and Jay is an electric.

Later they start dating, find more about each other and star building a healthy relationship.

The love traingle:

It never existed actually.

Yes, Nya made a love-test on the maschine, because the kids in the class wanted her to do it, but she didn't take it that seriously.

Nya is independent ninja, who truly forged a strong bond with Jay, not only romantically but also as a close friendship as a teammate, strengthened by shared interests and common challenges. She know what she wants.

Nya mocks the test result saying that Cole is only interested in cake.

Cole is never interested in Nya or she in him.

Jay would find out about the test results from Pixal and would only feel a little bad, thinking that there is someone better for Nya.

Nya would knock those silly thoughts out of his head, and everything would go back to normal.

Here things are more complicated.

Begining:

At the begining there isn't that much to say, because they are stranger to each other.

Kai is mostly focused on his sister and doesn't form any bonds with Nya's teammates. (I mean out of the blue your sister becomes a ninja and starts throwing fire from her hands, who wouldn't?)

In the meantime Cole is cusually spending his time with Jay & Zane as always.

They pretty much don't interract.

After Kai's feel more secure about Nya's safety there, then he starts more talk with others and even play video games with them.

Later:

Everything changes much after some incidents, which inclused water, when Kai had almost a panic attack.

Everyone besides Nya were suprised by his behaviour and after that incident and some explanation everyone knew how to react in similar kind of situation.

One time Cole would help Kai during his panic attack, when Destiny's Bounty would crush into water and in that way Cole'd gain some Kai's trust.

After that their relationship would improve a little and they would start interract more.

Later Kai would even ask Cole about training with him, because well Kai wants to be usefull and support his sister. [We wants to be as good as ninjas, be a part of team]

They would start training together and enjoy each others company. Talking, joke, later play video games, or even cook- [because Kai can cook and Cole like to eat]

They would slowly fall for each other.

Suprisingly Cole would be the first one to realise that-

Jay would notice Cole having a crush and surely taste him about that later.

Crushing time:

At the beginning of the reboot season. After the the kids were about to go on a trip, Cole in the last second akwardly ask Kai on a date.

Kai is taken aback, because he didn't expect that, but also akwardly agrees with a smile.

They never go on that date, because Zane 'dies'.

They don't talk for a long time until next season, because of the mess.

Kai isn't interested in Skylor or even interracts with her at all. [Instead Nya became a pretty good friends with her at the end of the season]

In the next season eveything becomes a big mess. Kai finds out about being master of water. And he needs overcome his fear of water.

In the meantime Cole becomes a ghost :(

Cole & Kai show each other a lot of support during this time and there's this big weird tension, because there is definitely something going on between them and both of them knew it. There was too much going on to just resolve it.

This situation make them also very flustrated and sad, because well they can't even hug each other show support.

In the season Skybound season Kai would face some misandrist from interview/medias, because he became a new ninja member. All of his friends would show him support and ect. At that time Cole & Kai would go out somewhere, but just as friends.

After Cole becomes human again, everyone becomes better.

After a lot of thinking Kai decides not to waste time and juat ask Cole on a date, to which he agrees without a second thought.

After that they pretty much get together.

And that's pretty much about it. I hope it was interesting or something..

Even as India awaits its first Tesla, these humble e-rickshaws made by workers like Baran are powering an EV revolution in the country. Each month, this upskilled team produces bodies and chassis for nearly 5,000 three-wheeler EVs, locally known as e-rickshaws, for the New Delhi-based YC Electric, India’s second-largest manufacturer in the segment. The Sonipat plant where YC builds its e-rickshaws is a joint venture with the company’s former Chinese import partners Jiang Li and Xue Jian Nan, who hold a 49% stake in the facility. “The link [with the Chinese suppliers] became so good that they also believed in us, invested money with us, and shared technology with us,” Kakkar said. Chinese engineers stayed “for days” to train welders like Baran when the factory first opened, he said. His company’s ethos, according to Kakkar, is “Make in India, but technology from China.”

we should meet the village that raised Kai and Nya. how else did they learn to take care of themselves? we know they were left alone right around the ages of 8-10, and when we see them in the pilot they're self-sufficient and run a successful business

culture-wise, we're clued in that Ray and Maya are vaguely East Asian, so the reference I'll be using is the traditionally Japanese method of teaching kids independence. here's an overgeneralization:

that kids are taught to clean up after themselves from an early age and by the time their directional skills are OK they are sent on their first errand to (usually) a nearby store or shrine

you may be familiar with the idea from the series Old Enough! filmed in 1991 that showed Japanese kids on their first errands (currently it's on netflix)

brainstorming thread for this post on bluesky

even if we assume they were taught independence from an early age, they can't've known how to proficiently smith weapons or tools. they also have basic education in addition to Nya's knowledge of electrical engineering and welding. they must've had to apprentice under other blacksmiths in addition to going to school.

this would also explain why Kai is so fiercely, often illogically independent in the pilot and first season. he's spent the past decade of his life being helped by others, and he doesn't want to rely on anyone else if he can avoid it. in this new life as a ninja, he thinks, I can be completely independent. I won't have to rely on anyone! and thus begins his character development

let's explore "it takes a village"

farmers always give them their less attractive produce but refuse to take payment, telling the Smith kids that they're doing them a favor by taking the ugly ones. the local schoolhouse never approaches them about tuition.

neighbors by while their kid's taking a nap. they bring lunch or dinner, teach the two how to clean the house, and show them how to make the food they brought. caretakers at the village shrine ask them to help sweep away the leaves on the anniversary of their parent's disappearance. a few friends come by with flowers- it's a coincidence, they say: these wildflowers are just taking over my garden bed- it's no big deal.

electricians and welders in the area always seem to need an extra hand when Nya gets out of school. Kai cleans the blacksmith shop a few towns over and gets paid in an apprenticeship and a permanent stock of firewood and coal during the winter. the ice house happens to have unsellable, broken ice blocks when Nya pops by in the summer.

the two of them know. the village is part of a careful dance, respecting Kai and Nya's independence while acknowledging their need for support. everyone plays a part. yes, toes get stepped on and feelings get hurt, but time rolls on regardless. another person comes in from the sidelines when someone else takes a break.

it is not easy for the Smith kids, not by a long shot, but the people surrounding them make it bearable

as time marches on, their village sees the children they raised save the world dozens of times. occasionally, the Smith kids come back to take care of the shop and check in with everyone after avoiding the latest apocalypse.

without thinking, neighbors hand them a basket of misshapen apples, half a sack of broken rice, and trimmings from the butcher's. by the time each of them make it home, they've noticed their pockets jingling. the dance continues and now they've switched places

Transformers Battlefront 1984 - Ratchet is highly intelligent, and his skills as a surgeon and doctor are unmatched. Only a lack of materials or time constraints can hinder him from achieving anything he sets out to do. He is fully versed in all Transformer physiology as well as that of humans and most known galactic species He is equipped with assorted medical equipment, including laser scalpels, arc welders, electrical sensors, diagnostics and more. The laser scalpels can be used for offensive purposes, but they aren't very powerful. In combat situations, Ratchet usually opts for a standard laser rifle to make up for his lack of inherent firepower.

Mystery Skulls Animated Headcanons (Part 1)

💮 : World Building

Spectra ; The Color of Magic

So I thought, what is the force that has Shiromori addicted to Mystery’s blood in particular and what has given Lewis the elemental affinity of fire? I had given this force a name ; spectra. It’s not only one’s lifeforse but their very soul which varies in color and elemental affinities. It can sometimes gains a form of sapience but have no awareness of their previous identity like the Deadbeats. Every century or so their are select individuals who are fated to have a spectral spark (or spark for short) which after a certain event that amplifies their spectra significantly. For example Vivi’s ice (which is considered ultra rare to manifest) spectral spark when she fought back against Shiromori in Hellbent. And Lewis’ fire-based spark ignited after he discovered he died. Arthur (who has an electrical spectral spark) has it too but hasn’t ignited yet. This makes the welder stronger then they were before it was ignited. This can come as a detriment however because of beings that feed directly off of specra including but not limited to demons/oni (Reverb) and various categories of yokai that need it for substance (Shiromori).

The Afterlife of MSAverse

While it isn’t clear how it works but the fact Reverb exists suggest their at least is a version of hell in canon. What’s also canon is there are unfortunate souls who fall through the cracks and become ghosts still roaming the living world to solve their unfinished business. The way I thought of it is their is a place called limbo that most souls go to get processed and judged by a council of eternal entities to either ascend to ‘heaven’ or descend to ‘hell’ to get purified before coming back to limbo to be assessed. Both ‘heaven’ and ‘hell’ are very loose terms for them and not one to one to any particular religion/mythology but does drew more from the Eastern conception of the afterlife as opposed to Western one.

The Existence of Yokai (and possibly cryptids.)

Instead of being Japanese parables and cautionary tales irl yokai are a taxonomic rank of beings that co-exist with humans. While some are helpful and friendly others are hostile when humans encroach on their domain/territory. Take for example Mystery when he was still ‘feral’ when he along with Shiromori was responsible for the disappearances of warriors around the province Mushi lived in at the time. Most higher Yokai such as kitsunes are born with very potent spectra (even if it doesn’t have a particular elemental affinity).

With the advent of electric cars, there's something very critical happening to North American infrastructure. No, it's not renewable energy. It certainly isn't a more stable electrical grid. And there's no way on God's green earth that electricity is gonna get cheaper. The important thing: level 2 chargers are now freely available in many urban centres.

Let me explain. You can plug an electric car into your regular-ass wall outlet. It takes a really long time to charge, and the cord gets kind of warm. In the terminology of the electric car mafia, that's "Level 1." Like in Mario, it's the level that sucks, but that teaches you how to get good by forcing you to be devoured by mushroom people or fall down a bottomless pit enough times. "Level 2" is where the interesting shit starts to happen.

Europeans have been blessed with 240 volts AC coming out of their wall since the dawn of time. That's twice as many volts as we've got, for many varied reasons that I don't actually care to look up right now. You can think of these volts as a sort of fire hose, pushin' electrons into your shitty homemade electric car. With more volts, you can push more electrons in less time. The Level 2 chargers are connected to 240 volts.

Other things are connected to 240 volts, friendos: welders. That's how I ended up in the Princess Auto parking lot, frantically trying to weld together my frame, while pretending that my 1977 Volare that I rolled into said lot is actually an electric conversion. Folks came and asked questions, sure, like "why is that car charger sparking so much" and "what's that odour?" None of them were familiar with Level 2 charging, though, not like you now are. They took my explanation at face value ("wireless charging," I explained, "the next big thing") and decided it would be risky for them to call the cops considering I now knew what their faces looked like.

Joke's on them, though. The old newspaper I was using as a face shield absolutely did not keep me from repeatedly blinding myself. Maybe one day, the electric car mafia will create a device that dispenses free sunglasses in every parking lot.
