When an elderly woman was found dead in the mountains close to where we live. Rumors of witchcraft overshadowed her death. "O swanetše go be a dira tša bošego", they say. The man telling my father the news is a tall, slender man with a very wrinkled face- the kind of wrinkles men get from years of over drinking and not crying enough. His fingers are long , his finger nails dirty and ofcourse being a Pedi man he speaks in metaphors. So I turn my attention to what I was doing and wait for my father to report when the man leaves. This is a norm here, women who live longer than it makes the community comfortable are given the "Witch" label. My grandmother was thought to be witch, infact all the women in my village who outlived their husbands and maybe even their sons were "witches". As a child I too swallowed this lie. But I have come to realize that society is afraid of women, as young women there's an intense need to contain us, to dictate how we should carry ourselves. It's almost as though there's something within us women that is so powerful society isn't comfortable with us having the freedom to tap into it. I've also come to realize that older women have mostly run out of fucks to give 😅. At this stage they are uncontainable. There isn't much you can use to intimidate them. Most have found their voice and this is some scary shit for a patriarchal society. So they label you a #witch in hopes that you will shrink and wither away. Powerful woman = witch Imagine what they will call us!. Us feminist women of the 21 century who are finding our voices so young. Maybe they'll still label us "witch". So here we go!💪🏽 . I suggest 2-8lb dumbbells . 1️⃣Squats (place feet a little wider than hip width, hold weights at shoulders or skip the weights all together) 12 Reps 2️⃣Shoulder Presses (sit in chair, w/ back not touching seat, core engaged) 12 Reps 3️⃣Curls (standing, pelvis slightly tucked, core tight) 12 Reps 4️⃣Lateral Lifts (finger tips on back of chair, keep toes forward aligned w/ knee, don't let inner leg open as you lift, keep knee & toes forward) 10 Ea Leg 5️⃣Lateral Hold (hold the top position of your lift, not too high, but enough to feel a little challenge, balance moves like these are excellent for older adults, to modify simply hold back of chair w/ finger tips of one hand) 10 Sec Hold ea Leg 6️⃣Calf Raises (hold back of chair w/ finger tips) 12 Reps 7️⃣Leg Glide (another excellent balance exercise, if need to hold back of chair w/ finger tips) 10 Ea Leg 8️⃣Seated Lifts (sit on edge of chair, tighten core, sit up straight, lift knees toward chest, but don't bend over, think core to help lift, alternating legs) 12 Reps 9️⃣Wall Push Ups (place hands wide, tuck pelvis, core tight, tippy toes, lean into wall & push away) 10 Reps . . 3-4 Sets . . Safe & great way to ease into a routine! Starting is the first step, then you can always do more as you get better.
