Wait.

I just realised that the way that Ten treated Martha was pretty much exactly the same way Eight acted with Charley Pollard after he screamed his feelings at her in Scherzo and I don't know how to live with this information.

For people in the tag that don't know, Charlotte/Charley Pollard was the Eighth Doctor's first companion in Big Finish and officially the first human companion that had distintic romantic arc with the Doctor. Russel T. Davies said to her actress that Rose wouldn't have existed if Charley hadn't set the mark. In one hand, I don't think Charley and Rose are similar except for superficial stuff (both blond and nineteen when they start travelling with the Doctor) mainly because I think the former was a way better written character. Charley was more of a proto-Clara in terms of storyline (already dead companion) and sort of like Martha when it came to her dynamic with the Doctor.

But I'm not getting to the point, okay, what I am trying to say is that Ten totally had feelings for Martha and he was pissed about it because he acted with Charley the same way, even after loudly telling her he loved her. It's partly because after the episode when that happened the writers that weren't Robert Shearman chickened out about the romance, but sadly it also set a precedent about how the Doctor would act later in those situations.

Like with Martha, the Doctor acted flirty but pretended he was totally not into her.

Like with Martha, the Doctor acted as if Charley's feelings were the crux problem in their dynamic and that she just needed to stop them... But it was kind of worse because he said asif he didn't tell her he loved her and even admitted it to himself (Scherzo: “Of course, I loved you! I killed myself for you, didn't I? Of course, I loved you! Of course... I love you.” “I love Charley. I am not sure of what that means, I don't know if it is weakness or strength or insanity, but I love her.”)

Like with Martha, it was Charley who eventually decided to leave him (though she regretted it but it was too late and they got separated so Eight had the impression she left him because amnesia stuff).

Like with Martha, the Doctor wanted to keep their dynamic as just travelling companions despite the obvious changes on it. He wanted to keep Charley close but he didn't want to admit there was something more... Sound familiar to the man that admitted that he “made it complicated”?

I don't know if it was intentional on RTD's part, it probably wasn't because his comment to India Fisher seemed to imply he thought Rose was the Charley-inspired character. Except that just showed that he only saw the superficial side of Charley and Eight's relationship because Charley wasn't hailed as some true love of Eight, nor she was compared or used to bring down other companions (indeed the companion after her was strictly platonic, a lot like Donna). Charley and Eight's relationship was very complicated in the same way Ten and Martha was. It wasn't just the girl being in love with the Doctor and the Doctor not being interested. It was the Doctor very much loving that girl back and being extremely cross about it. And all of that is quite reflected in the way that Ten acted with Martha. The flirting, the looks, the way that despite saying he wasn't interested he was literally unable of letting her go.

What I'm trying to say is, Martha's love wasn't unrequited or at least not as RTD wanted it to look because he had his head too far up his first companion's arse. At the end of the day, the relationship reflected in the same way than one of the most complex relationships the Doctor had with another companion.

It was requited and Ten was cross about it.

“Charley!” he says, seizing her by the shoulders and dancing her around. “Charley, Charley, Charley – you’re a genius!”

“I am?”

He kisses her on both cheeks, hugs her, and then releases her. “I’d say so. And it takes one to know one.”

“Well, then, hurrah for me!” She rubs her cheek. Her words come out almost even, her tone pretty stout, but her heart is doing all kinds of elaborate gymnastics. He’s got to get out of this habit or it won’t survive for much longer.

Trouble is, she’s not sure her heart’ll make it if he stops, either.

“I do wish you’d explain,” she adds, trailing after him as he darts about the console, operating this lever, pushing that button. “Whatever did I say that was so clever? I just asked you if you wanted a cup of tea.”

“Tea, yes, precisely! Why didn’t I think of that?”

“I don’t know. I thought you were always thinking about tea.”

“The point is that what we need to fix this little hiccup in the workings is tea, Charley. A nice cup of tea – but a very specific cup of very nice tea from Hypatia II in the early Sixty-Fourth century. The old girl will be as good as new after I let a drop or two of that run riot in her innards.”

“Oh, of course. Obviously the TARDIS operates on tea! I suppose she picked it up from you.”

He lifts his head, a smile lighting his eyes. “Do you really think so?”

“Well, I am a genius. I must be right, mustn’t I?”

Charley watches him pull the lever to dematerialise and the TARDIS shivers and makes an even worse grating and screeching sound than usual. “I know how you feel,” she tells the ship under her breath, and pats its side. “I only wish a nice cup of tea would fix me.” Her gaze strays to the Doctor. She sighs. Her hand, unthinking goes to the place on her cheek where he kissed her.

“Pull yourself together, Charlotte,” she mutters.

“What’s that?”

“Nothing,” she says brightly, hastening to his side. “Do we get to try a cup of this Hypatian tea, too, Doctor, or is it strictly for TARDISes?”

In the first five pages/first hundred fics on Ao3 for Doctor Who: The Eighth Doctor Adventures - Various Authors, there are a grand total of 58 works that are verifiably set in that continuity/involve characters from that continuity. Everything else appears to be mistagged.

The (Highly Unscientific) Breakdown of tagged and mistagged fic:

EDAs: 58

nu!Who/EightRose*: 19 (including fics also involving BF characters)

Big Finish: 16 (including fics also involving nu!who characters)

OC/ x reader fic: 7

movie only (ie, involving Grace and/or Chang Lee and/or Roberts!Master): 3

crossovers with non-DW media: 3

other/miscellaneous: 4

*grouping these together maybe wasn't the best way to do it but I feel like they tend to have most in common with each other

And like listen: I'm the absolute opposite of a stickler for keeping timelines separate and forcing continuity on Dr Who, but The Eighth Doctor Adventures book series is a specific thing, people; it does not just mean "any story tangentially involving Eight or the Time War". I commented on one person's fic and they were polite and happy to change the tags, and they said they'd assumed the tag just meant "Eighth Doctor era" so maybe that's where some of the confusion is coming from. I will be forever annoyed that BF chose violence and named the Lucie line the New Eighth Doctor Adventures, because why the fuck make things that much harder on everyone?!

Please, there are other tags. Doctor Who & Related Fandoms is usually your best bet when you aren't sure what to do with your big complicated multi-doc crossovers or stuff involving different timelines; Doctor Who (Big Finish Audio), and Doctor Who (TV Movie 1996) are likely the tags you're looking for when you have a fic with Eight that isn't set in the novel series. The Panini/DWM, IDW, and Titan comics lines do not have their own individual tags, and best belong under the general Doctor Who (Comics) and Doctor Who & Related Fandoms tags.
