Petra squad Headcanons I love them ! + some Rivetra
Sorry for answering so late! I’ve been so invested in writing that I barely can keep up with asks. I really do appreciate them, though 🥺💕
Petra’s squad headcons + Rivetra (sfw)
Edith Bisset (26-30 yrs old - she/her - 178cm)
Tumblr media
- She was Petra’s age when first introduced. Her personality and appearance were heavily inspired by Hitch, although she has many more things in common with Petra. If they were in a modern au, they would surely be besties! These two enjoy shit-talking a little bit too much.
- She and Hugo were some of the first friends Petra made after being resurrected. They decided to transfer from the military police after being heavily deceived by its structure and realizing how much more they could bring into their society by joining their Survey Corps instead.
- Edith comes from a middle-class family in Wall Rose. Her father is a successful fabric seller, but his relationship with her daughter was somewhat conflictive, so she enlisted as soon as her age permitted it.
- She’s the mom of the squad with Petra, doing a fantastic job keeping the younger members at bay when their leader is gone. Her mature yet teasy personality makes her one of my favorites tbh. Edith would be that mean girl you’re afraid of until you get to meet her and realize she’s not mean at all. (She would roast you, though, but that’s just her sense of humor.)
- Her skills are awe-inspiring for someone who’s not an Ackerman. That’s why she was initially named second in command until Petra decided to split that position with Hugo as well.
- She solved a lot of cases while working on the Military Police. Her intelligence and deductive capabilities are some of the aspects that make her a valuable soldier.
Hugo Herrman (25-29 yrs old - he/him - 191cm)
Tumblr media
- Cinnamon roll. He deserves all the rights. He tried to date Edith, but she ignored him (she kind of regrets it now). He comes from a modest family originally from Wall Maria. After he joined the Military Police, they were able to move inside Wall Rose. He was infinitely grateful for that decision after the fall happened. God knows if they would’ve survived otherwise.
- He has the most chill personality in the squad and behaves as an observer most of the time. His professional ethics and skills match with those of Edith, who is one of his best friends.
He’s a little bit of a “what if Marco was an adult man with a beard” character. Hugo is much more assertive, though.
- He and Petra bonded over their shared sweet nature.
- Irina had a big fat crush on him, but who wouldn’t? He’s probably one of the hottest members of the Corps. Unluckily, he’s too old for most of them.
Irina Moldovan (18-22 yrs old - she/her - 156 cm)
Tumblr media
- The daughter of a Doctor who volunteered to tend the injured of the Survey Corps. Irina’s dad had a significant impact on her, and her peers greatly value her medical skills. She worked with Hange a couple of times before officially joining the explorers. Now, she still helps them during the shifter tests. Irina has probably tended everyone at this point, which means she knows A LOT OF SECRETS. Thank god she’s not that much interested in gossiping.
- She has the craziest personality. Irina is spontaneous, witty, and accidentally hilarious all at once. However, she tends to be a little bit clueless when it comes to reading between the lines. Nathaniel could flirt with her for hours, and the girl would never get a hint. He eventually gave up. Which is a lot coming from him.
- Evelyn often has to take care of her since she tends to neglect herself a bit whenever she focuses too much on something. Queen of hyper-fixating with Hange. You wouldn’t want to get trapped in a conversation with both of them.
-She’s a hugger while sleeping. Everybody knows that whoever ends up on her side is about to get squished into the realms of Hypnos. Nathaniel didn’t inform Levi about this for fun. The result was tragic, but he still laughs about it.
Nathaniel Brzenski (19-23 yrs old - he/him - 180cm)
Tumblr media
-Flirtatious Himbo. Much more intelligent and emotionally mature than it might seem at first. He’s a bisexual mess who won’t stop trying to seduce everything that breathes.
- Sadly, he was the scapegoat child of the Brzenski family, a rich dynasty who had been investing in the army for decades. Of course, he grew with all the commodities, becoming the pretty rich boy who partied a little bit too much. His attitude was considered humiliating by his peers, who preferred his sister Rico, who became somewhat of the star child after joining the Garrisons. Finally, he gave in to the pressure and joined the Military Police, later changing to the Survey Corps still in hopes to regain the respect of his family.
- He excels at hand-to-hand combat.
- He was partially responsible for bringing together Petra’s squad with the 104th. This boy will approach everyone and make sure everyone stays friends, even at the expense of making himself the common annoyance.
- He’s not successful with women despite his nice looks. This is mostly because of his child-like behavior, although he would do much better if he showed his true self more often.
-He tried to hit on Levi more than once, and Petra watched in amusement each time.
Evelyn Lefebre (19-23 yrs old - she/her - 169)
Tumblr media
- She’s one of the most balanced members of the squad, especially among its young members. Her family owns a small goldsmith workshop in Stohess that suffered greatly from the crisis provoked by the fall of Wall Maria. As a result, Evelyn decided to join the Military Police to help her family pay their debts. Like all the women in her family, she has a great passion for craftsmanship, giving her an excellent eye for detail.
- Tsundere.
- The first time Nathaniel flirted with her as a trainee, she actually took him seriously. She developed a crush for like 15 min before she saw him doing the same with Irina. Since then, Evelyn has shared a love-hate relationship with him. She finds his himbo self both endearing and exasperating and feels somewhat embarrassed over the fact that she stills harbors feelings for him.
- She’s that one girl who was described as “really mature for her age” and would probably describe herself as such.
- Don’t try to fight her. She will find a way to win even if she’s wrong. In this sense, she’s a little bit like Edith, with whom she gets along well. These two have EGOS in different ways. It would be terrifying if they got angry with each other. Nathaniel would find it hot.
- She’s the only one in the squad who can properly cook aside from Hugo.
Sabah Fadel (Ackerman) (20-24 yrs old - they/them - 153 cm)
Tumblr media
- A long-lost member of the Ackerman clan. They lost their sister during the fall of Wall Maria due to an unfortunate intervention of Rico Brzenska. This led to a lot of resentment towards her and the Brzenski family, which made their first encounter with Nathaniel a little bit tense. Of course, he ended up becoming their best friend somehow. (Read full backstory here.)
- Everybody simps for them because they’re impossibly cool. When they joined the Survey Corps, Mikasa went into an existential crisis because nobody aside from Levi had ever equalized her skills.
- Serious, confident af, will call out and make you bite the dust 100%. Somehow, they’re dorky when you get to know them.
- Babysits everyone when they’re drunk, especially Evelyn and Irina.
- They have a stamp collection. Talking about their interests is a great way to get to know them.
Rivetra + Squad:
- Edith and Hugo were the first ones to suspect something was going on. They started to hang out with Petra before she became their leader and quickly realized how close she seemed to be with Levi. The moment they found out they were together, Edith couldn’t wait to scream, “I KNEW IT!” They’re totally professional about it but secretly wish to be able to tease her.
- The rest of the squad was a little bit louder about it, especially Irina and Nathaniel, who made sexual jokes when they weren’t around. It was certainly something to think about that pair together. They seemed total opposites from the outside.
- Levi was mortified when everybody found about their affair. He slowly got accustomed to it, but every time he approached her squad cringes at the thought. On the other hand, Petra got defensive whenever someone addressed the matter. Nathaniel once joked about it and ended up training until he nearly collapsed. Petra seldom applies harsh discipline, but whenever she does, it’s much worse than Levi.
- Levi and Petra like to make their squads compete during training. They can get really petty about it. They have fun roasting each other teams while hyping their own. Their units ended up realizing this, not that they can complain anyway…

All the Ackerman women have similar personalities - they’re maternal, outspoken, and hot tempered and it all started with Edith Ackerman. She’s unapologetically fierce. Some say she’s hard to handle, but Edith doesn’t care because when you’re born in the early 1900s, where women are oppressed (even more so than now), you have to not care what people think. Edith is your stereotypical Gryffindor. She’s courageous, brave, and daring. Unlike her daughter and granddaughter, who know when it’s time to back down, Edith doesn’t, which has gotten her into quite some trouble, especially with her family. They hated that she wanted to work, to establish a career before she thought about settling down to have a family. But if it hadn’t been for Edith, neither Margaret or Molly would feel the freedom to have a family if they wanted to or have a career if that’s what they wanted.
Isaac, better known as Ike, lived life to the fullest. Some would say too much, which is what drew Edith to the younger man. Sure, he was a couple years younger, but he never seemed like he was the younger of the two. With his patience, kindness, and tolerance, Edith would describe him as mature. He drew out the better in people. But he also drew out the adventure in everyone around him. He loved doing things that most people would consider “dangerous. Molly and Isaac were never close, due to Isaac’s premature death from alcohol induced Alzheimer's. However, she often wished she was because she had heard numerous stories from her mother (particularly about how, despite his back injury, he still would get out and do things he wasn’t suppose to before the alcohol took over) and grandmother about how good of a man he was.
Tessie Akerman, Molly’s maternal aunt, was sort of a legend in Molly’s eyes. She had grown up in the wizarding world her entire life, but when she was of age, she decided to become a Muggle cop. Because of her job profession, however, Molly didn’t often see the other woman. But when she did, they picked up where they had left off, as if it hadn’t been months since they last saw each other. When Molly wasn’t thinking of becoming a social worker or a special education teacher, she thought about following in Tessie’s footsteps and going into law enforcement. She loved the badassery that exuded from Tessie. She loved the determined and hardworking nature of the woman. But what struck Molly even more than her determined and hardworking personality was her empathy. The empathy Tessie had is what Molly hoped to have half as much during her time as a social worker. Tessie exemplified everything Molly wanted to be as a woman, a social worker, and as a person.
Margaret Prewett (née Akerman) is the reason why Molly has her red hair and her personality. Both of their personalities match their red hair. Margaret, like Molly, has quite the temper. She’s not one for being passive, much more so then Molly. While most people say that Molly is not only a spitting image of her mother, she has the personality to match the older woman, Molly is a diluted version of Margaret Prewett, but only when it comes to her abrasiveness or her unwillingness to stand down when it came to something she believes in. Like Molly, Margaret is a very maternal, understanding woman who will take in anyone who needs a roof over their head and food in their stomachs. Until the age of about five, Molly was found attached to her mother’s hip, but when her mother went back to work after her father lost his job, she sort of resented the older woman for it. With her father being home all of the time, Molly instantly bonded with father, her attachment to her mother quickly fading. But as years went by and Molly hit puberty, she rekindled that once strong bond with Margaret, which only grew stronger once she fell in love with Arthur, got married to him and started having kids.

Can I get some wholesome Jeankasa? Any au is fine. I just need more of these cuties.
gotta write them into my GoT au somehow!
A Shining Knight
Jeankasa. ASOIAF AU.
2262 words.
Buy me a ko-fi!
It takes years to become a knight. Jean knows this more than anyone. He served as a page in his youth, and he’s still serving his time as a squire. His master works for the Royal House Tybur, although the knight has yet to be bestowed with the honor of becoming a part of the Kingsguard. It was unlikely that his master ever would. Only a few knights were trusted enough to become a part of the Kingsguard, and one spot has been reserved for one person in particular even though she has yet to be knighted.
“Mikasa Ackerman,” a voice behind Jean spits. It’s not uncommon to have the name said with such disgust, although most people don’t speak as loudly as the boy behind Jean does. When he glances behind him, he sees that it’s a boy that’s a year or two older than him, but the boy speaks as though he’s been serving at the castle for years. “I don’t see how anyone could possibly climb the ranks so quickly, and a girl at that. She must have done something to have people favor her so much.”
“Well, she does have the Ackerman name,” another boy says, his voice much quieter than his companion. He’s another boy who works at the castle, although Jean recognizes that the both of them are newly appointed squires despite their age. It makes Jean wonder how they have the audacity to speak so disapprovingly of a person when it’s unlikely that either of them have ever held a sword or put on armor. “They might not have much wealth or land, but they are highly respected because of their history of serving the King. Most people from House Ackerman end up serving the King in some way. Many of them even become knights and eventually serve on the Kingsguard.”
“That may be true, but even a woman?” the first speaker asks incredulously. He reaches up to ruffle the messy brown curls on his head. “Even if she has inherited some skills from her family, I doubt they would be enough to allow her to be invited to the Kingsguard so early. Usually knights serve for years before being allowed the Kingsguard, but there are rumors that she’ll be put on the Kingsguard as soon as she’s knighted. Don’t you think there’s something strange about that?”
Hearing such talk makes the back of Jean’s neck burn. Although he would hardly consider himself a friend of Mikasa Ackerman, he’s been acquainted with her for years because both of their masters serve in the castle. They had gotten off on the wrong foot, but he’s come to know that she is an honorable squire, and that she will become an even more honorable knight. If there is anyone who deserves to serve on the Kingsguard, it is her.
“Well, it is a bit strange,” the boy’s companion admits. “But the Royal Family does favor her. Perhaps she does deserve a position on the Kingsguard.”
“No, no, no,” the boy says, shaking his head. He leans over, lowering his voice but only a bit, and whispers with a wicked smile, “Don’t you think that the Royal Family favors her a bit too much? There’s no reason to spoil a squire as much as they do her, but I heard that she gets invited to the balls and dinners that the Tyburs hold despite not being a knight yet.”
His friend squirms in his seat, not quite liking where this is going but too intrigued to tell his friend to stop. “I suppose that is a bit strange…”
“And she’s quite close with the members as well,” the boy continues eagerly, not noticing that Jean has turned his head to the chattering boys and is now glaring at them with a deadly fire in his eyes. “They call her by name, isn’t that strange? King William seems especially taken to her. Apparently, they’ve been close ever since she had first been brought to the castle, even before King William ascended the throne. I wouldn’t be surprised if she were relieved of her duties as a knight as soon as he ascends the throne and made a lady. It’s a wonder that they just don’t make her a lady right now, or perhaps there’s something thrilling in a forbidden romance.” The boy laughs as if this frivolous gossip is somehow amusing.
“I see,” his friend murmurs as if this all makes sense. Is it that difficult to think that a woman possesses more talent than they ever will? Ah, listening to this senseless gossip is beginning to make Jean’s blood boil. “She is quite pretty, although women like her should never put on armor. It’s unsightly.”
“She’d probably look even more ridiculous in a dress. Not at all slender and fair like Princess Edith was,” the boy says even though hardly anyone mentions the name of the exiled princess in this castle. Perhaps he has had too much wine or maybe he’s never had any brains to start with because his words only get worse after this. “Ladies should be like Princess Edith or the Queen Mother, shouldn’t they? Or else they turn into the bad sort, sleeping around the castle. With people like her around, this castle may as well just turn into a brothel.”
“It is a pity,” his friend agrees after a bit. “Girls like Mikasa need to learn how to behave.”
“That’s right, that’s right!” the other boy says, nodding up and down. “She should be put in her place before she starts taking advantage of people in the castle.”
“Shouldn’t you think about your own place before you start deciding where others belong?” Jean’s voice is so loud in the dining area that it startles even him. He hadn’t known that he was capable of harboring so much fury. He’s gotten angry before, yes, but nothing to this degree. Before he knows it, he’s standing up and facing the two squires, who are looking up at him in surprise. “What gives you the right to judge her? She’s far more talented than you give her credit for. Is it that you two are so incompetent and insecure that you feel the need to talk poorly about her in order to feel better about yourselves?”
The first boy turns red, embarrassed to be insulted so rudely by someone younger than him. He pushes his chair back, the wooden legs scraping against the stone floors. Angrily, he turns to Jean, grabbing him by the collar and spitting, “What is this? Are you perhaps another poor fool that that wench has seduced?”
Not one to be easily intimidated, Jean grabs the boy by his thick, curly locks and yanks his head back. “Everything Mikasa has ever gotten, she has gotten on her own. She doesn’t need to trick anyone for anything,” Jean snarls. He pulls back his hand and balls it into a fist, hitting the boy across the face with a loud crack.
Jean will admit that he is not the sharpest tool in the shed. If he were, he would not have felt compelled to fight two lowly squires over foolish gossip. Unfortunately, he is exactly that stupid, which is how he ends up getting held back and kicked over and over again in the stomach. Although he’s had far more combat training than most other squires his age, he cannot win a duel of numbers. Still, he does not regret his actions, feeling a sense of pride over that one lone punch he was able to throw even as his body is being brutally kicked.
The boys, of course, feel no remorse for their words. They only see a younger squire meddling with their conversation. Of course, that boy must be taught a lesson. Like the girl they had been so cruelly discussing, this boy must also be put in his place. It doesn’t matter that the way they do it is dishonorable - teaming up on a boy that is younger than them - but they see nothing wrong with that. They only want someone to push their frustrations onto, and Jean had conveniently volunteered himself with his outburst. Unfortunately, they are so preoccupied with venting their frustrations that they don’t notice the girl behind them.
Jean had been knocked nearly unconscious by that point, so he cannot completely recall what happened that time. All he can remember is that the boys were startled at someone else’s appearance. The last thing he recalls is his head hitting the floor as the two squires scrambled to escape. The other bits and pieces are what he collects from people afterward - that Mikasa had arrived and had knocked out the other boys senseless. He doesn’t have to have seen any of that to believe that it happened. He knows far too well what Mikasa is capable of.
When he finally awakens, he finds himself in the infirmary with a wet cloth pressed to his forehead. He turns slightly to see Mikasa beside him, dabbing gently at the wound on his head where he had hit the floor. She smiles at him gently and presses him back against the bed.
“You got into a fight,” she tells him.
He blinks at her, the only person who could have saved him. “So did you,” he says, “but you don’t seem to have a scratch on you.” His tone is a little jealous, but it’s tinged with admiration. That’s often the tone he takes when he speaks about her.
Mikasa shrugs. “You did most of the work.”
He knows for a fact that he didn’t, but he knows Mikasa will never admit to saving him. She’s never been one to brag about her accomplishments. Ah, but that’s just another one of the many things he admires about her.
After she’s satisfied with his wound, she places the rag she was using in a nearby basin. She looks at him, her gray eyes studying Jean carefully. “It was my fault that you got into that fight anyway,” she tells him.
“That’s not true,” Jean says. He tries to sit up, but a sharp, stabbing pain makes him clutch at his ribs. After he’s managed to catch his breath, he repeats, “I just … couldn’t stand what they were saying about you. But it’s not as if you need anyone to fight for your honor. I did it because it pissed me off. That’s all.”
“You needn’t mind what they say about me, Jean,” she says. She picks at an invisible thread on her trousers, a somber expression on her face. “I know what they say about me. It doesn’t bother me one bit.”
“But it bothers me,” Jean snaps. Realizing that his tone is too harsh, he looks down at his lap and mumbles an apology. He shouldn’t be taking out his frustration on her. That would make him a hypocrite. He sighs, rubbing his face with a hand. “It’s not that I did it to protect you. I did it because … the words they said reminded me of things I used to say about you.” He hangs his head as he says this, but Mikasa is smiling.
“Is that so?” she asks. “But that was so long ago. We were practically children.”
It may have happened years ago, but Jean still remembers it as if it had happened yesterday. He was young - hardly even twelve years of age - and he was fuming because Mikasa was being appointed to squire even though she had only served as a page for three years. He had observed her over the years and knew she was talented and hardworking, but he couldn’t believe that she would be so talented as to become a squire in such a short amount of time. He was convinced that there was something else at play - favoritism because she hailed from House Ackerman, her special relationship with the Royal Family, her master going easy on her because she was a girl. Infuriated, he had confronted her, demanding that she prove herself by dueling him in a sword fight. It hadn’t even taken her five minutes to have him pinned to the ground, the heel of her boot digging into his chest and the tip of her sword pointed at his neck. He knew how much of a fool he had been as soon as she disarmed him, and he still regrets doubting her abilities.
“I was flattered thinking you fought them to defend my honor,” Mikasa says, interrupting Jean’s thoughts. “It felt a bit like I had my own shining knight, but perhaps I’m thinking too much of myself.”
Her words surprise him, although he’s not sure why. Perhaps it’s because it has never occurred to him that Mikasa would have such thoughts. He had assumed that she was too invested in her goals - working at the castle, becoming a knight, protecting the Royal Family - to think about such things, but maybe he had been wrong in that assumption just like he had been wrong to assume all those things he had thought about her so many years ago. She is a lot of things - strong, resilient, a knight-to-be - but she is also a girl, Jean remembers. It makes him want to protect her even more.
She is not wrong in thinking that he had fought those squires off for her. That had definitely been part of the reason after all, but he doubts that he can become any sort of knight to her. He doesn’t deserve that honor.

Tessie Ackerman - 33 years old - Gryffindor - FC: Sarah Lancashire
Tessie Prewett was sort of a legend in Molly’s eyes. The empathy Tessie had is what Molly hoped to half as much during her time as a social worker. Tessie exemplified everything Molly wanted to be as a woman, a social worker, and as a person.
Now that Molly has little ones, she makes an even bigger effort to keep Tessie in her and her children’s life. She wants her kids to grow up knowing who their Aunt Tessie is. She wants some of her hard work, her empathy, and her hard work to rub off on her children. The Weasley kids seem to love the woman just as much as she does.
Edith - 73 Years Old (Died in 1994) - Gryffindor - FC: Susan Sarandon
All the Ackerman women have similar personalities - they’re maternal, outspoken, and hot tempered and it all started with Edith Ackerman. She’s unapologetically fierce. Some say it’s hard to handle, but Edith doesn’t care because when you’re born in the early 1900s, where women are oppressed (even more so than now), you have to not care what people think. Edith is your stereotypical Gryffindor. She’s courageous, brave, and daring. Unlike her daughter and granddaughter, who know when it’s time to back down, Edith doesn’t, which has gotten her into quite some trouble, especially with her family. But if it hadn’t been for Edith, neither Margaret or Molly would feel the freedom to have a family if they wanted to or have a career if that’s what they wanted.
If there had been any inkling of desire to go the medical profession for Molly, no matter how slim of a desire it was, it was because of Edith. She loved her job as a healer. She loved being able to help people get better physically. She loved being able to sit and talk to people in their hospital bed while they were on the mend of whatever illness they had. Molly had been close with Edith up until she died and she attributed a lot of her belief system to her grandmother.
Muriel - 57 years old - Ravenclaw - FC: Kelly Reilly
Muriel was often described as abrasive. She also loved to gossip. She looked down on people she thought were lesser than herself. Being a long time family friend, Molly often referred to Muriel as ‘Aunt Muriel.’ As a child, Molly loved being around the older woman. She thought the woman was generous, fun to be around, and wise. But as she grew up, she started to catch on that she wasn’t at all as she remembered as a child. She was crude, self-absorbed, thought little of people she didn’t agree with.
As an adult, she soon realized that life had been hard for Muriel. She had grown up with very little, her own mother being Muriel’s only friend. Her parents often left Muriel on her own, having to work multiple jobs to provide for the family. But it still didn’t excuse the bad behavior, so she tired to keep her distance from the woman.
Isaac - 66 years old (Died in 1989) - Ravenclaw - FC: Russell Crowe
Isaac, better known as Ike, lived life to the fullest. Some would say too much, which is what drew Edith to the younger man. Sure, he was a couple years younger, but he never seemed like he was the younger of the two. With his patience, kindness, and tolerance, Edith would describe him as mature. He drew out the better in people. But he also drew out the adventure in everyone around him. He loved doing things that most people would consider “dangerous”. Molly and Isaac were never close. However, she often wished she was because she had heard numerous stories from her mother (particularly about how, despite his back injury, he still would get out and do things he wasn’t suppose to before the alcohol took over) and grandmother about how good of a man he was.
Isaac had died from alcohol induced Alzheimer before Molly could really get to know her maternal grandfather. But she had heard numerous stories about the man and she liked him to be a lot like her father and husband. She had a few memories of him from when she was little and the one thing that always stood out was his laugh.

My casting for ... A Ladder to the Sky
I love to read and when I do I cast the movie adaptation in my mind. I review books here by sharing my casting. Next up ... A Ladder to the Sky by John Boyle. It’s the fantastically written story of Maurice Swift - a man with tremendous ambition to be a famous writer, but not sufficient talent to get there. A chance meeting with accomplished writer Erich Ackerman starts him on a path of going to extraordinary means to get what he craves.
My cast would be:
Maurice Swift - Armie Hammer
Erich Ackerman - Ian McKellan
Dash - Stanley Tucci
Henrietta James - Lena Dunham
Edith - Ruth Negga
Theo - Evan Peters

BROADWAY
1926
Tumblr media
Broadway is a play written and directed by George Abbott and Philip Dunning. It was Abbott's first big hit on his way to becoming "the most famous play doctor of all time" after he reworked Dunning's play. The crime drama used "contemporary street slang and a hard-boiled, realistic atmosphere" to depict the New York City underworld during Prohibition. It opened on September 16, 1926, at the Broadhurst Theatre and was one of the venue's greatest hits, running for 603 performances.

Chapter 3 Passion DRAFT
60-83
Lifelong Kindergarten Chapter 3 - Passion Lesson Plan
Objectives
To summarize aspects of choice and community that apply to designing toys.
To compare and contrast your experiences in creative collaborative communities.
To differentiate between the flow state and other aspects of project creation.
What do you think of the quotation?
Passion is the fuel that drives the immersion and reflection cycle. (page 71)
The topic of this chapter is passion. The first subchapter called Building on Interests jumps right into Legos which seems a strange jump from passion to Legos, however, of the four P’s in this book the first one is projects and the second one is passion. What are the third and fourth P’s?
This chapter introduces 2 kinds of passion. The first passion grows from freedom of choice. Starting with freedom to choose and learning more about your choice builds a connection to learning that can become passionate. Another important aspect of what author Michael Resnick calls passion is a sense of community, of belonging. In this case, belonging centers around the clubhouse — the Computer Clubhouse communities of children and mentors. What started off as an academic experiment with a single clubhouse eventually branched into an international network with many clubhouses around the world. In these clubhouses children collaborated and created animations, games, and interactive projects using a programming system that the MIT researchers created for elementary students called Scratch.
On page 64 there is a section called wide walls. This section introduces Seymour Papert’s concept of low floors and high ceilings in a learning environment. Low floors means it’s easy for novices to enter into the learning situation. High ceilings means that there is time and a space and tools to grow more sophisticated projects. The MIT research team also added wide walls meaning to encourage a wide diversity of projects possible with the technology tools in the Computer Clubhouse learning environment. Low floors symbolizes an easy entrance for beginners, high ceilings expresses the ability to grow and create sophisticated projects, wide walls illustrates the breadth to explore many different directions in creativity.
AET Community and Culture
Did you know that AET has an official Discord server, and that students have set up a No-Faculty-Allowed unofficial Discord?
How can you experience a sense of community with your faculty and peers as you learn AET skills?
Flow state
According to the book on page 71 the best learning experience go through alternating phases of immersion and reflection. Develop developmental psychologist Edith Ackerman described the immersion and reflections as diving in and then stepping back. So when you are passionate about a project you are eager to dive in and immerse yourself. You can work hours and hardly notice time passing. That immersion has been called the flow state. Being in the immersive flow state is exciting. There is another part of the equation to build lasting learning, to step back from your project and reflect on your experience. Through reflection you make connections between ideas and you develop an understanding of productive strategies. Through reflection you are better prepared to transfer what you’ve learned to situations in the future. Immersion without reflection can be satisfying but does not fulfill the creative spiral resulting in learning.
On page 74 there is a discussion of rewards and how rewards can be and have negative results then on page 75 there is a discussion of intrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation means a desire to work on problems or projects that you find interesting and satisfying. Do you need a reward do you like rewards would you rather have a choice in what you work on in your own projects.Creative projects themselves can serve as inspiration for the community. What creative projects inspire you?
Breakout
On page 76 there is a chapter starting about personalization which talks about computers tutors and other strategies for combining technology and learning.
If you could personalize a class in AET, describe what are 3 key components that you would include?
Vocabulary
Inquiry and existing interests, Low floors, High ceilings, Wide walls, personalization, structure, intrinsic motivation, rewards, reflection, flow state, inspiration, community

(a partial continuation of this post)
This is a mostly complete list of non-fiction books I have read about WWII, semi-categorized. A lot of these are first person accounts, but not all. I recommend them all, though a couple with a bit of caution (namely, these being real accounts of real people, some situations and discussions deal with some unpleasant topics - and I mean beyond the obvious warfare and Holocaust ones) - if anyone wants details or has questions, please ask and I will answer as best as memory serves.
This is by no means a complete list of books you should read if you are interested in the subject, but merely a list of ones I have read and think worth a mention. Also, although I have categorized as best I can, a lot of the books have overlap in more than one category, and some books maybe categorized under one subheading for lack of a more specific one.
This post will be frequently edited (I currently have two WWII books out from the library and one or two more I recently purchased). Asterisks indicate cross-posting between categories.

They hated that she wanted to work, to establish a career before she thought about settling down to have a family. But if it hadn’t been for Edith, neither Margaret or Molly would feel the freedom to have a family if they wanted to or have a career if that’s what they wanted.

I think I need more of that GOT AU headcanons :’)) What about Jeankasa ? (Its my weakness 😔)
sorry i waited so long to answer this! i had to think for a bit, but since i’m writing a piece of the GoT AU concerning jeankasa, i figure i should think of a few things to solidify their place in the au hahaha. put some of it under a read more b/c it’s so long~:
jean has been working towards knighthood since he was 7 yrs of age. it’s smth he wanted for himself and also for his mother. if he’s able to become a part of the kingsguard, he’ll get paid enough to support her comfortably while still working at the castle. even if he only manages to become a knight, with hard work and luck he’ll manage to work for a wealthy house
mikasa is originally from the countryside but after her family is killed by a band of thieves when she’s at the age of 10, and she is found by knights who have come to observe the damage and taken to the castle after finding out her tie to the ackerman house
she’s welcomed well by the tyburs despite not being a tybur, but her distant cousin levi has earned her a lot of favoritism just by association even though he long since resigned from the kingsguard and become a part of the night’s watch. she gets along well with queen mother helene and is favored by her son king william. she is even given a seat to the grand wedding of zeke of the disgraced house jaeger and princess edith - an event that never happens
although she is offered to be trained as a lady in waiting to the queen mother, she gently refuses and instead starts training to become a knight, and king william promptly promises her a spot on her kingsguard.
most boys/girls who aim to be knights serve as pages for 5 years, then 5 more as a squire, but mikasa is a page for only 3 years before becoming a squire, rumor has it that she’ll be a knight by the time she turns 16, which is rather early
jean serves a lesser known knight who serves the royal family but is not on the kingsguard while mikasa serves Ser Nile Dawk, who treats her like a daughter
jean is at first infatuated with mikasa when she first begins working at the castle, and he incorrectly believes that she’s a servant girl. when he finds that she’s working as a page, he’s filled w/ admiration but there’s a tinge of jealousy as well b/c of how highly she’s praised despite not serving nearly as long as he has
he’s pretty incensed about it and at one point confronts her, stupidly spouting that she can’t possibly be that good, so they duel and she wins easily. jean doesn’t doubt her abilities after that and apologizes for being an asshole to her
mikasa doesn’t hold it against him. she thinks it’s rather of brave of him to say it to her face rather than behind her back like so many others do, so the two of them become friends
jean finds mikasa a really intriguing character. he’s curious as to why she would choose being a knight over a lady in waiting - she wouldn’t have to fight - and she simply shrugs and says she doesn’t wearing those fancy dresses, but she does adore the strawberry petit fours that are served at the castle
mikasa admires jean’s honesty and his dedication to his family, but she doesn’t spend a lot of time with him. she doesn’t want to distract him from his goals.

Sensor Sweep: Wanderer’s Necklace, A. Bertram Chandler, Hyperborea RPG
Anime (Kairos): Contrary to many anime fans’ hopes, the fanatical, totalitarian Cult that’s usurped pop culture isn’t letting a little thing like an ocean get in the way of their conquest. Funimation, the American dubbing and distribution house that made news last year thanks to a defamation lawsuit brought against them by voice actor Vic Mignogna, now has a seat on the production committee of three anime series slated for 2020.
Fiction (DMR Books): Haggard wrote many different types of stories, which Deuce groups into the category of “exotic adventure stories,” a label that works as well as any. Among his stories were the Icelandic Saga-inspired Eric Brighteyes, and the Viking historical adventure The Wanderer’s Necklace (1914). While we don’t have much evidence that writers like Fritz Leiber or Michael Moorcock themselves read Icelandic Saga (though both have cited the influence of Norse mythology on their works, and we do know that Robert E. Howard read at least one of the Sagas as early as 1926).
SFWA (This Way to Texas): Tempest Bradford jump started the hate campaign against me, then Jim Hines jumped in. Bradford is Joe Goebbels to Nora Jemisin, who’s basically turned the SFWA into her own self-promotion racket, just like Tor Books turned the Hugo awards into its own little scheme. Hines is the same to John Scalzi, who is the single person the most responsible for the politicization of the SFWA. Most recently, Teresa Neilsen-Hayden jumped into the fray.
Fiction (Strange at Ecbatan): Today would http://rrhorton.blogspot.com/2020/03/birthday-review-stories-of-bertram.htmlhave been Arthur Bertram Chandler’s 108th birthday. He was born in England, became a seaman and eventually settled in Australia. He started writing SF in the 1940s. By the ’60s he was producing novels at a high rate, many of them about a spaceship captain named John Grimes. Here’s a look at a few of his early stories, and one 1967 Ace Double.
Review (Don Herron): When I was young I read everything I could find on ancient civilizations. Edith Hamilton, with her books on the great mythological hero-warriors, only furthered my desire to read of fabled, half-forgotten kingdoms that never were, but should have been. So, around 1966, when I discovered Robert E. Howard and Conan through the Lancer paperbacks, it was apparent to my youthful mind that truly I had been born at the right time.
Robert E. Howard (John C. Wright): Jewels of Gwahlur is neither the best nor the worst of the Conan Canon, but is somewhere in the middle. There is little to make it stand out from the other Conan stories, aside, perhaps, from the number of unexpected turns of the plot. There is a web of deception, with the deceivers being deceived in turn. Conan prevails due to his catlike stealth and lionlike courage more than his cunning wit — which he also uses. The side of the mighty Cimmerian on display in this yarn is the pilfering scoundrel rather than the barbarian mercenary or world-weary king.
Robert E. Howard (Adventures Fantastic): In a letter to Lovecraft from October 1931, Howard relates the story of Mrs. Crawford, a woman who survived a Comanche raid, and whom he knew that shows up in both of these women’s characters, and even in details in BBR involving other plot points. Again, the telling starts off with a restatement of the savage fighting history in the area of Texas between the two rivers.
Comic Books (Tentaculii): Back Issue! #121 (due in two months, 10th June 2020) is in Previews, and will be a special issue on Conan and similar in the comics. Includes among other items…the 50th anniversary of Roy Thomas’s Conan #1, the Bronze Age barbarian boom, top 50 Marvel Conan stories, Marvel’s not-quite Conans (from Kull to Skull), Joining Roy Thomas are Kurt Busiek, Ernie Colon, Chuck Dixon, Mike Grell, Ron Randall, Dann Thomas, Timothy Truman, Marv Wolfman, and many more.
Review (DMR Books): Although DC certainly followed suit once this successful formula became codified. Will Murray’s Tarzan, Conqueror of Mars is such a crossover event, which has been a hundred plus years in the making. Murray’s novel is a classic fish out of water tale, which slowly builds up steam, culminating in two Edgar Rice Burroughs protagonists, Lord Greystoke and John Carter, locked in a collision course. Conqueror is basically an Edgar Rice Burroughs universe crossover story in the tradition of Marvel Team Up or DC Comics Presents.
Fiction (Pulp Archivist): The Kickstarter for Jim Breyfogle’s Mongoose and Meerkat as now live. He’s a bit of a bravo, ready to knock a few heads for some coin. She’s a mysterious wanderer with more than her share of street-smarts and a head for ancient history. Together, the Mongoose and the Meerkat are a pair of rogues looking for coin to keep their bellies and wine skins filled and are sure to appeal to fans of classic Sword & Sorcery. This volume collects Kat and Mangos’ first five adventures with illustrations by the incredibly talented DarkFilly and is available in four formats.
RPG (Jeffro’s Space Gaming Blog): Well I don’t think I have ever run AD&D before unless you count that one disastrous attempt to run “Roarwater Caves” from Dungeon Magazine issue #15 a long, long time ago. Times have changed! With many years spent studying the ancient texts and an all star crew of players on hand, now was a great time to seize hold of gaming dreams from another time.
Pulp (Karavansara): What happened was this: Pro Se Productions, a publisher so reckless they even publish my stories (I mentioned Explorer Pulp a few days back, but there’s more), apparently went and licensed forty-two characters that were intended to form the stable of a little-known pulp magazine publisher based in St Louis, Missouri, a fly-by-night publishing company that was born and fizzed out in a matter of a few months, back in ’38. And I say “were intended” because the whole thing was over before it began, transitioning in the blink of an eye from the newsstands to the hazy memory of footnotes in pulp-collectors’ fanzines.
Cosplay (Tellers of Weird Tales): I noted in July last year that 2019 was the 80th anniversary year of what is now called cosplay. The first cosplayers were Forrest J Ackerman and his friend Morojo, who went to the first World Science Fiction Convention dressed in character. The dates were July 2-4, 1939. The place was New York City, including at the World’s Fair. What I neglected to mention is that the characters they were portraying were from Things to Come, a movie that had been in theaters just three years before. What a powerful influence it must have been on young science fiction fans of the time.
Gaming (Elf maids and Octopi): Will do a few more d100s for this space archaeology. Alternative for Traveller, star frontiers or other exploration SF. So this is some simple notes for a space archaeology campaign. Characters are mission specialists or ship crew (ex scouts). Funding bodies often nominate chosen experts for key jobs. Juggling funds and sponsors is mostly administered before an expedition. Factions continue to get involved in onboard conflicts. Expedition leader can usually veto votes from rest of the expedition. Ship crew in matters of safety and flight of ship are senior. Crew or team might have the past experience you wouldn’t expect.
Gaming (Swords and Stitchery): Today is one of those days where thoughts have been turning to introspection & especially about Jeffrey P. Talanian ‘s ‘The Sea Wolf’s Daughter’. The reason why is the implications that this module has for the future course of Hyperborea as a setting. A player of mine & I got into a discussion of this module last night via the phone. The question became what the Hell happened to Nodens & why are the nightgaunts attacking people in ‘The Sea Wolf’s Daughter’? The short answer is that Nodens is dead & the nightgaunts are running amok in Hyperborea.
Publishing (13th Dimension): But now the company is in a bit of a jam. Earlier this week, Diamond announced that next week it would temporarily suspend shipping new books because of the coronavirus crisis. Companies like Marvel and DC will be hurt by this, but they’re likely to survive. Smaller companies, however, face an even greater challenge.
