So In an alternate reality somewhere, if the writers of VLD decided, for whatever reason, make the klance ship canon, how would they write it? Or how would you have liked them to write it?

Oddly enough I actually have one very specific idea that has been in my brain since before season 8 aired. And I do actually feel like it would have fit in with the show, like canonically.

So, okay:

Shows like AtLA and Korra had a silly recap episode in their last season. And I had the thought "what if VLD did the same thing?"

The basic premise of the recap episode is Lance telling his family about everything that happened to them while with Voltron.

At first he starts out in his usual Lance manner - bragging a bit, putting on a show - but then as he keeps going, he starts to talk more seriously. He tells them about all the intense and scary stuff they went through, and he really starts to speak from the heart.

Afterwards we get to see his family's reaction - and they are all just... sitting there, staring at him.

And Lance is like "What? Why are you all looking at me like that?"

And Rachel (maybe) smirks at him. "Wow. You really must like that Keith guy, huh?"

And Lance is even more confused, until Veronica goes over to him and is like "Lance...you realize that 90% of what you told us was about Keith, right?"

Basically, as Lance is telling his family about their adventures, it turns into him recapping everything with this intense focus on what Keith was doing (and how it made Lance feel) - "Keith got my lion back" and "Keith says we had a bonding moment but -" and "And then he just left us, can you believe it?" and "Keith was in the Altean ship and he looked so different - bigger and cooler and handsome."

The episode would end with him having a realization of how much Keith actually meant to him - and the following episodes of the final season, we would get to see Lance fully coming to embrace the idea that he had always had these feelings for Keith. And all he needed was a bit of outside perspective to nudge him in the direction of what he truly wanted and needed.

And the thing is, it actually would have been really easy, because all they would have needed to do was continue what they started. There were so many moments in the early seasons that were alluding to something more between Keith and Lance.

And to start the show with Lance being a cocky womanizer and ending it with him actually realizing he was bisexual and he had found a much deeper connection with his former rival - chef's kiss.

Making klance canon would have been easy to write, and it would have explained why so many things focused on the two of them in ways that definitely did not feel just platonic. Why Lance was so depressed while Keith was gone. Why he was always so worried and, like, protective over Keith when he went off to do something alone and reckless. Why he went so far out of his way to watch the sunset with Keith. Why did they really pick each other in the game show? Why did Keith really leave the team after his "one paladin too many" conversation with Lance? Why a thousand more things that are slipping my brain right now.

I believe there were certain restrictions from the studios on what they were willing/able to show, but it's not like they had to explicitly show klance making out or something to prove they were together. If they had actually been able to canonically have klance be endgame, I think they would have ended it similar to Korra. Where Keith and Lance would just have a moment where they take each others hands and smile at one another - or something equally as subtle.

On a more personal "my particular vibe" note, I would have liked them to write it to include things like:

Keith going full on rage Galra, and Lance having to sword fight him back to himself

The two of them having a much needed emotional conversation - with yelling and crying - where they learned how close they both came to actually permanently dying.

Lance and Allura having an emotional conversation about how they wanted to be friends with each other - because that's equally as important as having a love interest.

Keith and Lance fighting back to back on the ground in a final, epic showdown.

Basically just overall more emotions and character interactions tbh

The thing that I think bugged so many fans - and why this ship/this show is still a sore spot for many people - is because they were building something that had to do with klance in the beginning, and they just didn't follow through.

But if they had just continued in the direction they were headed, I fully believe klance would have been canon because it would have been so easy to make happen.

this one is gonna be an xmas special!! even though im writing this before halloween lol. anyways. this was so cute!! lance being all stressed about what he should get keith bc he's all in love w him any everything. so real.

2. You're Here (Where You Should Be) by @blue-wanderer

"And if you’re worried about the cameras just take care of them.” “Take care—! Take care of them? With what, Keith?” “I don’t know?” Keith asks, busily testing his foothold in the gate and generally ignoring the rising storm cloud of ire behind him. “With a gun?” “A gun? This isn’t some sort of black ops storming an enemy base thing! This is a Christmas tree thing!” “I don’t see a difference? You’re the sharpshooter. Shoot out the cameras.” “Let me just pull a gun out of my ass, Keith!” “OK, problem solved,” Keith agrees, taking another step up the gate. “Nothing is solved you dumb country space redneck!”

Or Keith and Lance may be disasters at decorating, but Christmas still manages to work its magic on them.

i bookmarked this like a year ago and let me tell you all i needed to hear was dumb country space redneck and i was hooked 😭😭 and it lived up to the name fr. hate the canon ending? want lance to not be a farmer while still acknowledging his struggles with homesickness? want some whipped keith and meddlesome kosmo? want some cheesy xmas feels? click ahead!

3. make my wish come true by angelbolt

“A world where one has to fight for custody of one’s boyfriend is a godless one,” Lance muttered, slumping so he was leaning against Hunk. Shiro exchanged some final words with Kolivan before the screen blipped out. Ah yes, the ideal Christmas Eve: long boring talks and war meetings. Wonderful. ❆❅❆ keith comes home for christmas.

fun game idea: take a shot every time you see a klance xmas fic with a mariah carey lyric. lol. ANYWAYS yall know me and established relationship + early season dynamics!! i am obsessed!! and this fic delivers!! grumpy lance pov who just wants the rest of the world to fuck off for a couple days so he can have his bf around. he's such a voice of the people

4. i'll be home for christmas by @thespacenico

A severe bout of winter weather threatens to stop Shiro from making it home for his first Christmas with Keith. Shiro is ready to do whatever it takes to keep his promise.

okay this one is from darcy's i've got you brother, which i am obsessed with and have cried over several times, and which just recently updated! this fic is so cute and a adashi with young keith always fucking gets to me, man. they're just so. shiro being so desperately determined to keep his promise to young keith who has had so many promises broken that he doesnt even expect shiro to try. but is happy that he does. sobbing.

5. the greatest gift of all by dumpsterdiva

Keith’s mouth hung open for a few seconds before he stammered, “D-do you really mean that?” Lance looked a bit sheepish as he said, “I… It’s crazy, right? I mean, it’s way too soon. You know I was kidding.” Keith straightened up. “Well, I’m not. Marry me.” “What?!” “You heard me, you coward. Marry me.” “That’s the worst proposal ever!” “Worse than you threatening me with marriage so I would stop talking about how amazing you are?”

YOU GUYS KNOW HOW I FEEL ABOUT PROPOSAL FICS. i feel ksjbskdbqjdbqwlwd about them. okay. and throw in a christmas setting??? and banter?? and a MODERN AU?? i am doing my best, people. this fic had me shoving a pillow into my face and screaming.

not to bring up old amd major fandom discourse but...

okay so watching the atla live action drove me back into my 2010 zutara era, and reading all that zutara fanfic made me think of klance (the other blue/red ship we should have had) so i was reading klance fic which made me realize i forgot most of the show and made me want to rewatch the show and im about to finish season 2 again and guys??? omg????

ok i was a klance girly thru and thru like everyone else but in the early seasons like 1 and 2 (and i realize what i'm about to say is blasphemous but bear with me) allura and keith had HELLA chemistry. like they had bonding moments and had like...a lot of deep talks and skinship (like the ep where they thought they were being tracked by zarkon, or the ep where allura gets over some of her galra hatred for keith's sake, etc etc) and were honestly more compelling than allura and lance or allura and shiro. maybe it's because i'm no longer a child/i'm looking at it through a more critical lens but the dynamics are totally different than what i remember in the early seasons.

OBVIOUSLY IT'S MEANT PLATONICALLY IN THE SHOW but the chemistry is real platonically or romantically. and for fandom that ships anything with a pulse, this ship really should have been more popular.

i think ppl were just so obsessed with wanting gay characters or characters with specific sexualities that they glossed over characters that had real chemistry. and only sticking to the skinny characters was whack. lance had hella chemistry with hunk and but i think y'all are too fatphobic to properly appreciate him. i blame the show for making hunk the least fleshed out of the main characters. hunk is more than comic relief!

also? y'all butchered my boy keith in fanon. he's got way more personality in the real show than in fanon, which like i understand that usually fanon characters have less personality but the difference is wild. canon keith is not nearly as withdrawn or moody as he is in fanon, he's just kind of a grumpy guy who knows what he wants and is incredibly determined to get it. he's not as emo or depressed (or repressed) as fanon makes him either

for the record, i'm still klance for LIFE but omg have a little fun sometimes. bi keith supremacy.

also, unrelated and completely off-topic sidenote, stop writing spanish into your fics if you can't speak it. i can't speak it even i can tell yall on some gringo shit. use italics or <brackets> like they do in comic books and webtoons. way less cringe.

I should not care about a show that ended many years ago, nor of a couple that probably was never supposed to be together, yet, I shall persist to do so until my mind is settled.

Beware: Voltron Spoilers Ahead

I would definitely need to rewatch Voltron if I wanted to write any fics for Klance nowadays, but everything that went down in the later seasons really makes me not like that idea.

I'll be honest, I don't remember any that happens after season six, my brain blacked those out completely to save me from my heartache and a rage induced coma. (I care too much, I know)

Why have Allura and Lance end up together only to kill her in the end? To hurt Lance? To hurt the audience? Frankly, all you did was annoy and upset us.

Seeing scenes or mentions of later season stuff happening (like what happened with Allura in the end) makes me see red. And with what happened with Lance and Allura happening before hand, feels like a slap in the face, especially having Shiro briefly shown at his own wedding, married a man? To someone we knew NOTHING about and have zero connection to?

Why did you accept that but not Klance?

What was the point have all those scenes with Lance and Keith if they weren't going to be together? Was it really only for friendship and team connection? If so, explain why Keith didn't have those connections with anyone else, besides Shiro. Though you will not convince me of those two being anything besides having a brother/cousin dynamic.

Maybe it's been too long ago and I'm looking at it through dented red colored glasses, but I remember loving the idea of Klance being together since the very beginning.

I'll rewatch the early ones and write fluff and them getting together out of spite to the writers who did us dirty.

I think I'll just live in my little fanon fantasy where Klance does happen and they live happily ever after. And thanks to fanfiction, I can do just that.

It's not about that Klance didn't become canon, rather, it's about the potential they had that is now wasted.

Necessary - a whumpy Voltron Klance fic I wrote after the first season (before the show went to hell)

ooh see despite writing a lot of angst, I almost always write happy endings, so maybe I'll take no gold, I'll take no silver (please read the tags on that one). maybe spit some blood at the camera is pretty sad too, actually

all of them!! yayyyy! even if it's not spelled out, I usually resolve things because that's the world I want to live in! every fic is a fix-it fic

Do you get hate on fics?

not really, mostly just people asking when I'm going to finish, although I have seen people complaining that my version of Fox/Corries is banal and overdone which like yeah. I agree. but my brain won't let me move on.

Do you write smut? If so what kind?

hell yeah I do! I don't know what "what kind" means - I write characters fucking, never x reader and rarely OCs; and it's usually somewhat kinky because I just can't not

Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

I've written a few fusions/AUs - elysium is as far as to is a Gladiator AU, everyone wants a double feature is a Pacific Rim AU, and more human than human is a Bladerunner AU. but I've never done a straight-up crossover, although there are a few bouncing around in my brain (namely, the GAR joins the Decepticons and another where Boromir meets Rex and falls in love)

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

yeah I've had real problems with people plagiarizing fics, from lifting whole sections of dialogue to copying really specific scenes

nope, but one got a podfic

little snapshot from my early seasons toxic as hell klance oneshot <3 i do believe in canon they are genuinely friends and their barks are much worse than their bites. however. what if they weren't.........

Keith is marching down the halls of the Castle, boots striking the floor to the beat of the pounding in his ears. He hates how juvenile every fight with Lance makes him feel. He’s always been so mature for his age, with a temper sure, but for fucks sake, he’s been cooking his own meals and tucking himself in at night and being his own everything for almost a decade. Then along comes Lance, and one look at that smug grin makes him feel like he did before he learnt to take care of himself, when he was still bare bones and an open face, rising to every occasion. Before he learnt how to handle the itching underneath his skin with colouring books and blood on his knuckles, when everything was raw.

He pelts snowballs at Lance, and argues with him over dinner, and curses him out during training. Hits too low below the belt, and he knows it, and he hates it. He swears every day that today will be the day he stops letting everything get away from him, but he just can’t, not when it’s so damn satisfying. Keith deserves a little satisfying. He’s in the middle of fucking space.
