What got you into dragon age?

this is plainly embarrassing but i was craving some fresh hurt/comfort fic just to feel something and i didn’t care where it came from, so i remembered the cool art i kept seeing for dragon age and cracked open ao3 and ended up with some kind of condition. a couple months of wiki-haunting, tag-lurking derangement later, and after buying world of thedas vol 1, in my late night fuelled desperate measures i discovered to my astonishment that dao would actually run on the laptop i’d bought for uni. i had never played a video game before, except failing to use my brother’s xbox to successfully make a character walk in a straight line, so this was genuinely quite an alarming development to me. but i endeavoured to succeed nonetheless (by which i mean running around on easy difficulty with my corpsesque prototype surana) and the rest is history

i do not recommend this. none of the above behaviours. cannot express that enough.

#this was like early to mid 2022 #actually on a serious note these have been a couple of the worst mental health years of my life #which shows. i think. JGSHSJSK #and dragon age has not been a perfect experience #but it HAS been a source of. you know. joy and community and passion and a remaining contact with my creativity over that time #its worth a lot to me. so ultimately i do have to be glad i made a series of truly incredibly online life decisions #in early to mid 2022.#but really the h/c fic quality around here is not even that good

idk if it was the venus retrograde or what, but july 2023 was quite literally the worst month i've ever experienced in my life like.....every single day? awful? worse than the last? it's more likely than u think

#u know sometimes you'll experience something bad in the moment and look back later like lol that was fine actually!#not july :) she was actually really bad :)#tmi but if u wanna know why i was gone lol #my partner of 6 years cheated on me in early may. on her birthday. at her party that i planned. with her coworker. and i saw it #on top of just being like. completely devastated? i was just so embarrassed? i hardly told anyone because it made me feel like #just SO worthless. and then i was embarrassed about feeling worthless and it was a whole thing #anyway they started dating in july and it was really tough for me #it was like every day i'd wake up and have to like grieve? and come to terms with reality? and accept that a lot of my future plans #were no longer going to happen - at least with her :/ it's a really tough thing to grapple with #esp since it felt like she wasn't nearly as sad as i was - which unfortunately makes sense but still sucks #ANYWAY im doing a lot better now lol i started telling people in my life and letting them be there for me and it's helped so much #it's still hard sometimes but i know now that i'm gonna be fine eventually #this is so dumb to post on my sims blog but it feels good to get it off my chest so SUE ME I GUESS

hey. turns out i likely have idiopathic condylar resorption, a degenerative joint disease that causes progressive/rapid bone loss in the jaw. i've had it since i was a kid but went undiagnosed for over a decade; my severe functional issues, pain, and other symptoms were repeatedly dismissed by doctors for years. my mandibular condyles have deteriorated, my jaw is slowly shrinking to the point where i look unrecognizable, and none of my teeth touch anymore. the pain is increasing more and more by the day. it's extremely difficult to breathe, eat, talk, sleep, and exist.

this is a progressive condition, so nothing will stop it or slow it down until the joints have been completely eaten away. my only option is a total temporomandibular joint replacement, where the two diseased joints that literally hold my face together are removed and permanently replaced with metal prostheses. aka a major surgery with a 6-12 month recovery 😃

#basically my face is disappearing because my body is attacking itself which has been really Fun to experience #i've had this disease since i was like 10 but only found out after doing my own research because most dentists/orthos don't know about it #i always knew something was really wrong and that my pain/ facial changes were not normal and getting worse #so it's both relieving and frustrating to *finally* be taken seriously #but yeah i'm having a lot of emotions about this and it's been really tough to process #getting major jaw surgery was not how i thought i'd be spending my early 20s but deep down i knew i would have to do it eventually #better than being in chronic pain for the rest of my life for sure #and if i wait any longer i risk severe deterioration/unsalvageable bone loss and total airway collapse in the future #sameera.txt

it's sound weird, but i have headcanon that Hunter didn't go hexside, because he too old to shool(according to my feelings, at the end of the he is 16-17 y.o (except for the post-credits scene), and at that age it is already too late to go to school):p

i mean, well- in my opinion he rather certainly did go to hexside, since one of the things he'd said during his TTT monologue was "i'd like to attend hexside like a normal student and play flyer derby with my friends" and all of his "wishes" were supposed to sort of foreshadow his goals and his future (carving palismen, studying wild magic, etc etc) so i feel like it's safe to say he succeeded in becoming a hexside student as well. we also know he attended grom with the rest of his friend group, and like- since he's 16 before the timeskip (no canon certainty whether he's recently turned 16 or is going on 17 already though, but like... around 16 canonically) that means he'd get at least 1 year of school, but most likely 2+.

my personal headcanon is that he went to hexside for around 2 years (full or not quite, depending on when the school year starts in the boiling isles and how long it lasts; possibly even 3), and during that time he picked up a mentorship/apprenticeship at del's palisman carving shop, and after he graduated from hexside he started carving palismen professionally with the clawthornes (i like to think that he also takes some courses at eda's wild magic university in his spare time, simply cuz . funny uni hexsquad shenanigans)

#like imo him being like ''i dream abt going to hexside'' and then not getting to attend hexside cuz he's ''too old to start'' or sth #would be kinda cruel since he already lost sooo much of his childhood because of belos. and he wants to be a hexside student #he deserves to have these few years of the typical teenage experience that he so desperately longs for #ofc it's not gonna make up for ALLLL the years of childhood that he'd lost. but even 2 years of the experience? would mean So much to him #not to even mention that the idea of him just... sitting at home or JUST carving palismen or doing whatever for halfa day for the 2-4 years #just cuz he's ???? ''too old'' or it's ''too late for him to start high school at his age'' or anything similar ?#while the rest of his friends get to go to school and learn and socialize and attend classes everyday without him . sounds so lonely #and he had already spent most of his life sheltered and separated from everyone so . yeah.#he'd still technically have to finish hexside like 1-2 years before the rest of hexsquad buuuuut y'know. his situation is very unique #so i could also imagine bump/eda agreeing to let him go to school a year or so longer so that he could finish it alongside his friends #but that's like mm i also can see him finishing it a year early compared to the rest of hexsquad and starting fulltime at the palisman shop #but either way; yes to at least 1-2 years at hexside in my mind #now COLLEGE? i Could see him not going to uni since he's already got the palisman business going and is doing well and wants to chill #BUT personally i still like to imagine that he attends classes there part-time #nicole answers #my toh talk #hunter toh #verocorne

how did you start transitioning so young? thats awesome tbh

I’m from an open-minded family, and knew a lot of queer people growing up. A lot of the exact timeline is blurry, but i began questioning my queerness when i was 10 or 11. I never considered myself straight growing up, so it wasn’t very surprising that i might be, but i knew i felt nothing like other girls my age and i didn’t know why. When I was 12, I was going through a lot of severe mental health issues. I had been dealing with a lot of them my whole life, but that year was the point that I had to leave public school and recieve a lot of help, and around that time i was able to peice together that the extreme discomfort and depression i was experiencing was because I was transgender. I was lucky enough that i was seeing a therapist who not only believed me, but was able to reccomend officially to my parents that helping me to transition was one of their best shots at helping me with my mental health. My parents were hesistant at first, not really because they didn’t believe i was trans or that they didn’t like trans people, but because i was young and already dealing with so much. But thankfully, they did a lot of research, joined support groups, listened to all my counselers and agreed to help me transition after understanding the risks of not doing so. So i ended up being fully socially transitioned by my thirteenth birthday, and started a new school as a boy that fall, changing my legal name and sex on all documents around the same time. I had already been through a lot of puberty, i was an early bloomer, but i was able to get on hormone blockers about a week after i turned fourteen, and on hrt six months later. After i was on hrt, things slowed down since i was not legally able to get surgery yet, but after struggles both with a deeply terrible surgeon i met with and covid, i was able to get top surgery at 17, which finally allowed me to ‘pass’ since i was extremly large chested and wasn’t able to before that. In the past two years i haven’t done much medically but i do intend on pursuing a few more surgeries in the next few years and hopefully finish my medical transition before im off my parents health insurance. In short: I have supportive parents, good doctors, live in a state with decent laws, enough mental health history to convince insurance im a major risk if they don’t approve my healthcare, and happened to come out within the short window that treatment for trans kids existed but wasn’t as hard to access as it is now. My family is not wealthy, so we were lucky that the insurance my mom’s job gives us happens to be one of the ones that has good coverage for trans healthcare, and our proximity to major colleges makes certain types of healthcare easier to access. I’m aware im a rare case, and i consider myself very lucky. But that’s basically what it is.

#im not including the very negative things that have come of my early transition but i want to hammer in this was not easy or fun #im very lucky but i do not want my transition to be a sign to others that my transition was free of issue #there are very transphobic and unsupportive people in my life and i faced both extreme bullying and medical abuse #with my transition. i highlight the good things and i do think my transition was much easier in some ways #but i never like giving the impression that everything in my transition was perfect #part of my intense need to advocate for specifically trans kids is because i know how shitty that experience is #i am both privlaged and also have been the victim of very specific types of transphobia faced by children

random firewatch au detail that has basically no impact on the story unless you want to psychoanalyze fw!grian even further than i did as the author, but it's very intentional that i always refer to both of mumbo's parents but only grian's mom. did i give him daddy issues? i guess so, but not in a way where i really deeply examined the implications as meaningful to the story. it was just a detail i stuck with from the beginning as a way to keep fleshing out the story's background subtly. the idea behind grian's dual citizenship was always that he was born in america to an american dad and british mom, and that his mom moved back to the UK when he was very young since she wanted to be closer to her family. perhaps his dad didn't go with them? or perhaps his dad did, and then later they split and he went back to america? whatever the cause, grian never even mentions his dad in the story, and it wasn't because i intended him to be dead (because that would have come up in a story about grief) if you get me

#i have no idea why but i normally HATE thinking about cubitos' parents in like. normal mcyt settings sjlfjslkfjs #if i'm writing a hermitcraft-setting fic i'd rather have them all just spawn into the world fully formed than dealing with their parents LO #but in a real-world au it made more sense for the characters to mention their parents occasionally #i just similarly didn't spend TOO much time worrying about it because it was not really the focus #everybody's relationships with their family is a bit less important here than their relationships with their Friends here you know?#i also think that ivi inspired this a little because somewhere early in the fic she was like hey what Made grian react to things like this?#like what experiences in his life primed him to react like This to the story events?#i was like. oh yeah.#cause i normally approach writing grian from the perspective of watcher!grian #but normally him on hermitcraft or life series AFTER he escaped them and it's more of an old trauma that informs his present actions #with firewatch au there is like....none of that pretext. there's no context that he might have had other trauma in life?#but i WAS writing him like that. out of habit. and i'm not saying he DID have prexisting trauma in firewatch au #that's very much something i haven't bothered to flesh out because it's in the zone of things where my time was better spent elsewhere #but i will say i think i only starting doing the one parent detail AFTER ivi mentioned this lmao #i mean. if the guy's got abandonment issues it probably explains a lotttt of his fear of giving up on Mumbo. just sayin'#hc_firewatch_au
