Tobacco already kills eight million people every year, and, irrespective of any impact of newer products like e-cigarettes, the huge global burden of tobacco mortality and morbidity can be expected to remain for decades to come. Tobacco growing, manufacturing, distribution, and use, all contribute to global warming through the emission of greenhouse gases. In fact, the tobacco product life cycle releases an estimated 80 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent every single year. The tobacco industry’s emissions are larger than those for entire countries, including Denmark, Croatia and Afghanistan, and are comparable to emissions from the oil, fast fashion and meat industries.

'The China National Tobacco Corp., the state-run monopoly, is the largest tobacco company in the world. In cooperation with its regulatory arm, the Tobacco Monopoly Administration, the pair controls the manufacture, marketing and pricing of all cigarettes made in China. Between 2017 and 2020, e-cigarette sales increased more than 254%, according to data firm EuroMonitor. Those sales accrued exclusively to vaping entrepreneurs, not the government. “The tobacco administration says, ‘Well, every e-cigarette sold means one less cigarette smoked,’ so they are going to regulate the hell out of them now,” said Dr. Ray Yip, a public health consultant and former director of the Gates Foundation’s China program.'

"Just like they did with smoking... 'Big Tobacco' has taken another addictive product, wrapped it in shiny packaging and added sweet flavours to create a new generation of nicotine addicts. We have been duped", he said. Medical experts agree. Prof Banks argued the promotion of e-cigarettes as a "healthier" alternative was a classic "sleight-of-hand" from the tobacco industry. As such, vaping had become "normalised" in Australia, and in the UK too. "There's over 17,000 flavours, and the majority of use is not for smoking cessation", she said. "They're being heavily marketed towards children and adolescents. People who are smoking and using e-cigarettes - that's the most common pattern of use, dual use."

Vape police could be rolled out to monitor the sale of e-cigarettes to children across Australia including on TikTok, Snapchat and Instagram under a plan that will ban most imports and introduce plain packaging.
A crackdown on the importation of vapes, plain-packaging and a ban on flavours will be announced in the May budget to tackle the health emergency of thousands of teenagers who have “gone nuts” for e-cigarettes.
But the second stage of that crackdown – licensing sellers and using that cash to boost enforcement measures at a state level – is the next phase of a world-leading crackdown.
There are also calls to ban ads for vapes on social media that targets kids including on Snapchat and Instagram.

Hayes shopkeeper fined for selling e-cigarettes to children
Tumblr media
Last August, during an undercover operation conducted by the council's trading standards team, a child aged 13 entered RK Convenience Store and successfully purchased an Elf Bar 600 disposable vape.   The court also heard that the store had been the subject of an investigation in March 2022 following a report from a member of the public that they had been selling vaping devices to children.   Following this incident, Kumar had received a written warning from the council and training materials to help him comply with the law surrounding age-restricted products.   When handing down the sentence, the magistrates gave the defendant credit for his guilty plea but noted that he had failed to adhere to the guidance provided by the council.   In total, Kumar has been ordered to pay £1,364 which includes a fine of £403, victim surcharge of £161 and the council's costs of £800.    #hayes #shopkeeper #fined #e-cigarettes #ecigarettes #vapes #undercoveroperation #undercover #tradingstandards #mhra Read the full article
