forgive me if you're not interested, but I'd actually love to hear more of your thoughts on the maroon arc, what you thought was/wasn't done well. would u like to share?
hii i didnt see this. im gonna apologize right away bc this is not gonna be organized i have talked soooo much today already and im tired lol.
for starters what i think was done best is flint and madis dynamic. its incredibly well played both as individual characters and as representatives of pirates and maroons in relation to empire. their chemistry is crazy and their dialogues are extremely didactic. i also find that flint not immediately viewing the maroons as natural allies but as tools to reach his own purposes and later deconstructing that after getting involved with them aggregates to his ongoing theme of progressive radicalization which i think is also a highlight of the maroon arc in the way it makes it explicit for good that his political stance has done a 360 and is now entirely discordant from the one he had as a lieutenant in every aspect that matters. freeing and partnering with the maroons is expected after that and i dont think theres anything special on that regard. then the shitty parts are essentially everything else. especially steinberg admitting he stalled to really explore the topic of slavery due to not being in his element as a white guy but still not putting black people on the team to do it. this reflects very obviously in the show and makes the entire arc feel rushed and reticent besides leaving a billion loose threads and missing opportunities to appropriately explore character dynamics that couldve been way more interesting (such as silver/julius/flint & madi/eme & madi/eleanor & eleanor/scott) and really engage confidently in the impact that flint and the pirates having canonically sold slaves would have had in their relationship. speaking of julius i also very much felt like it was a tragedy to hinder his presence and had they started it earlier or extended it longer his perspective on war vs. protecting his community as opposed to madi’s for example would have been probably my favorite part of the arc. i know the version in my head of it is. all in all its a vital arc for the story and everyone slayed really hard with with they had i just wish the creators hadnt shied away from all the implications of it. if i had the energy to go look for some posts for u i would bc my mutuals have definitely also discussed this before but alas. thanks for asking anyways feel free to add ur own thoughts or question mine further

black sails rarepair week 2024: the week in review
a brief overview of the fics and art posted for rarepair week! there's a delightful array of work here--modern AUs and canonverse, comfort reads and belligerent sexual tension, repression and introspection, gen and queerplatonic and romantic and unrequited affections.
the event is now closed, but the fics & art posted as part of it can be read and appreciated at any time! comments, kudos, reblogs, etc. are highly encouraged!
huge thanks & all my gratitude to everyone who participated--it has been my honor to serve as your host <3
now: the rarepairs!
an introduction by Benja
rated T. Flint & Gates.
fascinating portrayal of Flint's early days as Flint in Nassau, from Gates's POV, with super sharp dialogue
The creation of Captain Flint, from Gates' perspective.
this is what you do at parties (right?) by sunset_waltz (@thenobleprincess)
rated T. Abigail Ashe/Idelle.
new college student Abigail meets-extremely-cute with local bartender Idelle. (nb: sunset_waltz's fics listed here are all set in the same modern & very queer/trans AU!)
Abigail is new in town, and Idelle is too pretty.
let me get this straight by ElectricKettle
rated M. Flint/Gates.
i'm nominating this fic for most apt use of the ao3 tag "Belligerent Sexual Tension" SERIOUSLY oooooough
Hal Gates is a man of moderation. He is not prone to impulse or hotheadedness. So why is it that this all goes out the window when it comes to a man named Flint?
i think it's magic (and i hope you'll agree) by sunset_waltz (@thenobleprincess)
rated T. Miranda Barlow/Madi.
meet!! cute!!! SO much chemistry
Miranda is Abigail's mom. Madi is her teacher.
a love lost or false by @van1lla-v1lla1n
rated T. Billy Bones/Charles Vane.
Jack Rackham reminiscing on the golden days and spinning tall tales about the love life of his buddy Charles Vane (rip).
I met Jack Rackham at a tavern once, long after the golden age of our kind, and he spun me a tale of a love lost or false, I knew not which, and I know not still to this day.
unspoken words (are preferred) by sunset_waltz (@thenobleprincess)
rated M. Bonny/Rackham/Vane but super multiship!
another installment in the author's rarepair-centric modern au, with so many fascinating poly character dynamics
Charles fucks up, and apologizing is hard.
post-XXVII by @kairennart
Flint/Vane art!!!!!! SUCH beautiful colors, amazing lovely expressions, have i mentioned that i'm in love with Flint's freckles BECAUSE. just go look at it <333
by the way (i forgive you) by sunset_waltz (@thenobleprincess)
rated M. Flint/Madi, Flint/Madi/Silver.
(modern au) Silver disappears, and Flint and Madi find each other as they grieve in his absence. & as if that weren't an amazing enough premise: BONUS OT3 AT THE END
After John Silver vanishes, Madi and Flint are left to their own devices--until he comes back.
under the stars and the sky by Veridissima (@thestagthatlovedthewolf)
rated T. Miranda Barlow & John Silver.
a very quiet and comforting middle-of-the-night Miranda-Silver interaction, with background Miranda/Flint/Hamilton/Madi/Silver. super compelling miranda-silver queerplatonic relationship
Miranda hears Silver walking past her bedroom door, and she can't help but follow him outside.
the unnoticed bulge by BilliesBud
rated M. Billy Bones/Charles Vane.
my wife's first fanfiction :''''''') a very tongue-in-cheek portrayal of a deeply repressed Charles Vane confused about why he's thirsting after Billy Bones
Billy living rent-free in Charles' head.
five times Howell was too blind to see what is right in front of him + the one time he wasn't by tahiri_veila (@twopointsinspace)
rated E. De Groot/Dr. Howell + unrequited Howell/Flint.
absolutely masterful portrayal of Howell's unrequited affection for Flint shifting to a requited friends-to-lovers situation with De Groot. (with bonus background silverflint)
"Welcome aboard." De Groot lowers his voice to a near-whisper. "Don't mind the captain's disgruntled mood. He may be a capricious bastard, but he's damn good at his job. The best, I'd say. You get used to his ways."
pourparler by @van1lla-v1lla1n
rated T. Max/Marion Guthrie.
i'll be honest this was mainly me thirsting after Harriet Walter. but don't you want to know what all those meetings between Max and Marion Guthrie were like! this is that.
Max meets with Marion Guthrie for initial negotiations.
joy, and music, and peace by Benja
unrated. Eme/Madi.
ough be still my heart this one is SO sleepy-sweet--literally sleepy like Madi and Eme have a cozy little rest together, a lovely moment of safety and security.
A moment of rest.

ooh so exciting to hear you like black sails too! if you ever had fic recs and wanted to share, i’d love to know which ones you liked ☺️ i just adore the dynamics in that show, especially between Flint and Silver
This whole show is a masterpiece, and knowing how it was made just made me feel even more impressed. I've only seen such a unique, meticulous, loving approach in Hannibal before. The characters, their development, the music, the plot, everything held me captive for all 38 episodes.
I also really enjoyed the evolving bond between Flint and Silver. It was fascinating to see how Silver slowly fell under Flint's dark charisma, craving his respect, and how Flint began to respect and value him above everyone else.
However, when it comes to ships (and fics), my heart belongs to Flint/Thomas. That's just the kind of obsessive, destructive love that I'm drawn to. While they barely share any screen time together and Thomas spends the biggest part of the show presumed dead, Flint's love for him basically makes him the main character. Thomas is like a ghost, a memory that keeps powering Flint, palpable in his every decision, his shifted world-view, his intensifying darkness and desperation. I liked Thomas from what we saw of him, but it’s Flint obsession and devotion to him that made me love him — Thomas’ value, his personality is disclosed in every effort Flint invests into creating the world that Thomas wanted to create. We get to know Thomas through Flint’s love for him — this love defines him, and it’s so unusual and interesting that I ended up enjoying it tremendously.
I know that Flint/Silver is more popular among the fans, but I'm glad that Flint got his reunion with Thomas in the show because I think that was the best possible ending for him. I can see him being able to fall in love with Silver eventually, some more years later, but I feel like Thomas would forever remain his truest love, the ideal that no one else can possibly come close to, and Silver deserves to be number 1 in the heart of his partner. So Flint/Thomas and Silver/Madi as the end-game made me immensely happy.

20 questions for fic writers
Thanks for the tag @hms-tardimpala <3
I have noooo idea who has done this already, so tagging @lichfucker @frau-kali @tiofrean @lupismaris @verdanthoney no pressure, also anybody else who wants to
1. How many works do you have on AO3? 18
2. What's your total AO3 word count? 257,419
3. What fandoms do you write for? 95% Black Sails. I have one story for Fetch Phillips Archives, one for the tv show of The Exorcist, and I've committed to one for A Charm of Magpies (book series)
4. What are your top five fics by kudos? long as amber of ember glows, to pull me from myself again, The Salt and the Sea, Another Way, Such Terrible Hungers
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? Absolutely! I love talking about these guys, my writing, fandom in general, anything, and if somebody takes the time to comment i want them to know its appreciated. that said i DO either miss some sometimes or just get overwhelmed with life but it is always my intention.
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Uhhh for all the angst IN the stories i'm actually secretly a softie i usually leave things pretty good. but. ok if we're doing story not series, then its definitely A Composite Unity
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Princes of the New World, the end there is PURE wish fulfillment in a way I had never done before and likely never will again. Wanna see Silver be a pretty princess and then get fucked so good it breaks canon? Also Kittenfic if you want something that is actually not smut for once. Yes it has actual kittens. It is sad and sweet and i think reasonably plausible in canon, but. It was written for a ficfest prompt "betsy has kittens and silver adopts them on maroon island.'
8. Do you get hate on fics? Not yet.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? OH BOY DO I lol. I'm not gonna say this is what I'm here for, but, sex is definitely one of my main lenses for exploring character dynamics and psychology. 'What kind' has varied a lot.
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written? Not yet, though I've done some concepting. I got pretty far into planning a Hannibal/Black Sails crossover with a friend (set in Black Sails canon era) and that concept still haunts me.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? No
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? No
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? No
14. What's your all-time favorite ship? Lol. You mean, the whole reason I ever started writing at all? Yeah, Silverflint. I'm Still Processing.
15. What's the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? Uhh ot3 swimming
16. What are your writing strengths? Making fic feel true to canon. Dialogue, character exploration through sex.
17. What are your writing weaknesses? Showing things in summary rather than getting into every damn detail. Heavily plotted fic, fic that covers a long period of time. At least, these are things I don't do intuitively and have not yet pushed myself to do? Also imagery, my writing is pretty functional.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic? Absolutely fine, but do it well. Which to me means, if it is not a language you speak fluently, google translate is not enough, ask a native speaker to review it. Also, needs to be there for a reason. There's gonna be some Spanish in longfic once I finally get back to it.
19. First fandom you wrote for? Black Sails.
20. Favorite fic you've ever written? Oh god I really don't know if I can pick. Honestly it might be By Faith of My Body, the one where pining!Flint and Madi have highly fraught conversations about books. But that's what I'm working on now and its possible 'favorite' is just 'whatever's in front of my face.'
