Screening Elegy Ending with a Cell Door Closing 10/12/19 6-9pm University Heights Center 5031 University Way, Seattle, WA 98105 Elegy Ending with a Cell Door Closing has been selected for the 8th Annual Social Justice Film Festival!! Written and spoken by the brilliant poet, memoirist, teacher, lawyer and Guggenheim Fellow, Reginald Dwayne Betts, "Elegy Ending with a Cell Door Closing" is a creative non-fiction animated poem about his friend/former cellmate Rojai Fentress (aka Fats) who in 1996 was a 15 year old child sentenced to life in prison for a crime he did not commit. On the strength of one witness who didn't actually see the slaying, and with zero physical evidence linking #Fentress to the homicide, a jury found him guilty on the murder charge. It is now 2019, over 2 decades later and this innocent teenager (now 39 yrs old) is still in prison! (please consider sharing to help spread #RojaiFentress' story) The piece was originally commissioned by WNYC Studios for "Caught: The Lives of Juvenile Justice" Podcast Series. Mr. Betts won approval on Friday September 29th, to practice law in the State of Connecticut, after a state panel reviewed his moral character. As a teen, Reginald Dwayne Betts was convicted of crimes related to an armed carjacking in Virginia, a felony he still carries on his record. After his release from an eight-year prison sentence, he's written prolifically about his life, and has become an awarding winning author and advocate for youth facing the same challenges he once did. "I believe that many of us have our life circumstances and experiences that make us who we are, shape us, and make us fantastic people and advocates for others," Karen DeMeola, the president of the Connecticut Bar Association, said Friday. "I think we need people who represent other people for whom life happens, and I think it's important to have people who reflect the diversity of our communities admitted to the bar." "I'm happy that they made that decision," Betts said. "I'm just grateful for the huge amount of support people gave me. Betts, 36, graduated from the Yale Law School last spring and passed the bar in February. #BlackCulture #BlackIsBeautiful #MelaninIsMagic #ADifferentWorld #TheBlackMind #BlackHistory #DwayneBetts

My screed on the role of constraint and form in contemporary poetry appears in the current @american_poetry_review It may be controversial, but I get more outspoken as things feel more urgent. Thanks to @bizscanlon for taking a chance on this piece. If you're not watching this now, be sure to catch it on playback. The conversation btw @ProfessorEA & @dwaynebetts about books, poetry, poets, libraries, and librarians is thoughtful, profound, and inspiring. Also, inter-library loan #FTW! https://t.co/mE1xiHSg5Z

REVIEW: Reed Turchi Doubles Down On Love
REVIEW: Reed Turchi Doubles Down On Love @reedturchi @dwaynebetts @million_book #creosoteflatts #americanamusic
On February 19th, 2021, the ever prolific Reed Turchi will release two very different full length albums: I’ve Chosen Love and Creosote Flats. I’ve Chosen Love is a record steeped in the groove and soul of Memphis and the Mississippi River and Creosote Flats is blues that sound freshly emerged from the arid West. I’ve Chosen Love is a two part album, a yin-and-yang of production techniques and…
