We need to theorize race and gender not as meaningless but as meaningful as sites of difference, filled with constructed meanings that are in need of constant decoding and interrogation. Such analysis may not finally free us of the ubiquitous body-biology bind or release us from the quagmire of racism and sexism but it may be at once the most and the least we do to reclaim difference from the moulds of mass production and the casts of dominant ture.

Yet, if the process of deconstruction also constructs, tearing Barbie down runs the riskof building Barbie up — of reifying difference in much the same way that commodity culture does. Rather than representing a critical kiss of death, readings that treat Barbie as a real threat to womankind — a harbinger of eating and shopping disorders — actually breathe life into the doll's plastic form. This is not to say that Barbie can simply be reduced to a piece of plastic. It is to say that hazard lies less in buying Barbie than in buying into Barbie, internalizing the larger mythologies of gender and race that make possible both the “like me” of Barbie and its critique, So, if this is a cautionary tale, the final watchword for consumers and ctitics alike must be not only caveat emptor but also caveat lector; let the buyer and the reader beware”

Harnessing the Power of STEM Education

What is STEM?

The Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) strand is one of the four strands available for senior high school here in the Philippines. The curriculum of STEM is Designed for students who desire to pursue college degrees centered on science technology engineering and mathematics. This strand provides preparation for students in using science math and general pathology to solve real-life problems in advance national development.

Why did I choose STEM?

I, as a STEM student, chooses this strand because, We solve multiple concepts and complicated problems which involves experiment and knowing about the underlying scientific, technical, and mathematical principles and ideas. By solving this real-life problems, this prepares me to be ready for my future profession, which is Engineering.

Following Aly’s question in class, I wanted to consider how the contributions of black studies might be inserted into other disciplines in order to unveil fundamental contradictions at the heart of various fields of knowledge. But I realized this was something that would have to come in my own time—I was too struck by the necessity of her question and why it shook me so.

In part, I was taken by the need to attempt to summarize and clarify a number of arguments for myself, because of I am always mindful of how easily black feminist studies can be treated “not like a discipline with a history and a body of rigorous scholarship and distinguished scholars underpinning it, but like an anybody-can-play-pick-up game performed on a wide-open untrammeled field” (Ann duCille, 1994). Moreover, I am trying to seriously heed the fact that “more and more of our scholarship is becoming trendy” (Hortense Spillers, 2007 Callaloo interview). At Frank Wilderson’s talk several weeks ago it became a point of discussion: what happens to Afro-Pessimism when/as it becomes trendy for white scholars?

As was discussed in class, the academy loves the insights of black scholars and loves black people at objects for study, but simultaneously the academy loathes the black scholar who resists the status quo and hates the methodologies that threaten to pull the rug out from underneath the University-as-intellectual-metropole. In class Freud’s conception of “splitting” was raised as were Lacan’s four discourses of master, university, hysteric, and analyst, to describe this kind of love-hate fixation. But as Dusty put it a few weeks ago, modernity needs blackness and thus of course critical scholarship has a parasitic relationship with blackness. Nevertheless, I was inspired by Fred Moten’s quotation of Adrian Piper, who spoke of:

“we consider what we see but are prevented from voicing. We take it into ourselves, we muse on it and analyze, we scrutinize, extract its meaning and lesson, and record it for future reference. Our unspoken or unacknowledged contributions to discourse infuse our mental lives with conceptual subtlety. We become deep, perceptive, alert, and resourceful…I am not, after all, entitled simply to externalize my creative impulses in unreflective actions or products…[because] it would be “permanently garbled, censored, ridiculed, or ignored, were it not for a critical and discursive matrix that I—with effort—eventually supply.”

Here, I am reminded of a quotation I scribbled down watching the 20th anniversary of Scenes of Subjection festivities. After a myriad of scholars spoke of how Saidiya Hartman’s work had influenced them, Hartman spoke:

Decades earlier she had vowed never to lose sight of the work, never to be distracted by the business of it (the petty rivalries, the schools, the hierarchy, the administration, the protocols that deadened thought), never be embittered by the bullshit, the obstacles, the assault, and the fundamental disregard of this project—her project, our project. So she trained herself not to desire recognition, not need the praise of others to nurture the endeavor... She knew the longing for recognition and affirmation had destroyed many Negroes, ruined so many minds. She tried to live like a cactus, and survive on so very little. So the feast was unexpected. The words she cobbled together could not even convey the joy, the enormity of endowment, the sense of disbelief as others described what she had done—what she had made possible. Had she achieved what they had said? Was not more proof required to establish that she deserved it? Was the grand celebration a mistake or premature? Didn’t she need to work even harder to prove she deserved it all? So she consulted the tattered outline of a plan for black female genius always at hand when she was writing, which was really just a how-to guide to survive in hostile conditions. Item #4 stated clearly: ‘Want nothing. Never care what they say about you.’ And now here she was at the podium, biting her lip, and trying to hold back tears to embrace it all, to find her place in this great company, to accept that she, too, had contributed something to this venture. But she started to choke up—so, she just said, ‘Thank you. Thank you.’”

And so how do we do our work mindful of the pressures and conditions that try to strip our work away from us, disfigure it, disabuse it, make it something it was never intended to be and have that making take place in stern disrespect of our names? How do we to write in ways that require misreading if persons with other purposes want to mangle our names? How do we write with clarity and precision such that we can take part in a project, if our goal is to produce scholarship that is part of a project?

For me, as I wrote last week, I constantly must bring myself back to the project—why am I here, what is this work for, who is this work for, what is it trying to achieve, how is it situated in a world that I consider untenable and know is unjust? Even though my rent payment for being on the planet has been paid a thousand times over, how can I pay forward what has been entrusted in me—with this skin, with blackness as a charge, with a commitment to the project loving black people can provide which is one that we can only imagine as it is not-yet-here, but I trust blooms in the same soil queer, anti-colonial, disabled, communist, feminist visions of liberation have taken root. For me, I try to return to the particularities of the project which opens out into mysteries that I am trying to love as if they are my own because they are or I am theirs moreso. I belong to them.

Phóng viên ảnh anh là ai?

Cũng giống như khái niệm ăn ảnh và không ăn ảnh trong chụp chân dung. Chỉ có khác ở đây là khái niệm dành cho người chụp chứ không phải dành cho người "bị" chụp. Có nghĩa đúng ra phải là "ăn phóng viên ảnh" và ngược lại. Điều đó cũng có nghĩa là không phải ai cũng hợp với nghề này, một nhà nhiếp ảnh chuyên nghiệp toàn chụp ảnh nghệ thuật nhưng chưa chắc đã chụp giỏi được ABC, bởi giá trị thông tin đòi hỏi của ABC khác với ảnh nghệ thuật. Vậy điều gì đã được coi là tố chất của "Phóng viên viết bằng máy ảnh"?

3.1. Nhạy cảm và thông cảm:

Tri thức có thể học, kỹ năng có thể rèn nhưng sự nhạy cảm, năng khiếu "phát hiện" nhưng điều mà nhiều người không thấy và tìm cách thểhiện quả hình ảnh độc đáo, thích hợp thì lại không phải ai cũng có và cũng giỏi được.

Và cũng không phải "đối tượng phản ánh" nào ai đã giỏi là giỏi tuốt, phóng viên ảnh chúng ta thường biết ở Việt nam là thời sự và thể thao… PVA phải nhạy cảm và thông cảm vì anh ta sẽ gặp nhiều tình huống khác nhau, nhiều tình huống bất ngờ, có thể bạn sẽ chụp những gì đau buồn xảy đến với "chủ đề" như tai nạn, chiến tranh, thảm hoạ tự nhiên, bênh tật… Bạn không thể chăm chăm chụp ảnh với khuân mặt lạnh tanh vô cảm hay trang phục, đầu tóc "đầu gấu" mất thiện cảm cho được, mà phải có thời gian thiết lập quan hệ và sự tin cậy. Michel DuCille phóng viên Washington Post cho rằng bất kỳ lối tiếp cận nào của phóng viên ảnh cũng phải "đối xử trân trọng với chủ đề và vứt bỏ mọi định kiến có sẵn. Phải có khả năng lường trước được bản chất con người và biết có mặt đúng nơi đúng lúc".

3.2. Dũng cảm, kiên nhẫn và không ngại gian khó:

Nếu không chúng ta là sao có nhưng ảnh trong những khúc cua nguy hiểm trong đua xe, những tình huống gay cấn, cảm động trong chiến tranh, những vụ hoả hoạn, những tình huống giải cứu con tin nghẹt thở, nhưng bức cận cảnh với bệnh nhân HIV, giao lưu và làm quen với những con nghiện, những vụ thảm hoạ thiên nhiên chưa từng có… và không thể kể hết những tình huống nguy hiểm.

Nhiều bức ảnh giá trị nó nằm trước hay sau sự kiện, chínhvì vậy kiễn nhẫn chờ đợi hay chịu khó quan sát cũng là điều kiện để không bỏ lỡ nhưng khoảnh khắc không có lần 2.

Ví như nhà báo Eric Draper đang làm nhiệm vụ ở Macedonia, chụp ảnh dân tị nạn Anbani ở cuộc chiến Kosovo, anh cố nán lại thật lâu trong lúc bị cảnh sát đuổi và đó cũng là thời điểm anh chụp được bức Người bố khóc trên đầu đứa con sau cửa kính ôtô chở người tỵ nạn. Nói như Schiappa "Cảnh sát ra lệnh cho anh phải dời vị trí đó, bạn tuân theo, nhưng hãy dời đến vị trí khác và tiếp tục chụp đến khi nào họ đuổi bạn lần nữa"".

Và để kết thúc phần này tôi xin nhắc lại đại ý câu nói nổi tiếng của một phóng viên nổi tiếng, Ông có nói rằng: "Nếu bức ảnh của bạn chưa đẹp thì có nghĩa là bạn chưa đến gần". Và ông đã hy sinh trong chiến tranh khi tiếp cận gần "mục tiêu" hơn, tên của ông là CAPA.

3.3. Tư duy và óc hiếu kỳ:

Tư duy ở đây được hiểu là tư duy hình ảnh, nó sẽ được hỗ trợ nếu định trước những chủ đề cụ thể và có cơ sở vững chắc. Nó đòi hỏi vốn kiến thức và tầm hiểu biết nhất định. Như bức ảnh nổi tiếng chụp tên đọc tài Pol Pot của David Longstreath năm 1998. Tác giả bức ảnh cho rằng: "Đây là tên độc tài cuối cùng của thế kỷ 20. Tôi không thể nói không trước cơ hội này và không thực hiện được thì tôi không quay lui." Bạn phải có tầm nhìn lịch sử để hiểu được tầm quan trọng của sự kiện này.

Nhưng phải nói một thực tế không chỉ riêng ở Việt nam (Việt nam thì hiển nhiên rồi? ) mà ở tầm quốc tế là hướng tư duy của PVA bị ảnh hưởng bởi các cuộc thi ảnh báo chí và những cuốn sách giới thiệu các bức ảnh nổi tiếng. Nó đã làm cho nhiều người cầm máy dễ dàng đi theo con đường mà những người khác đã vạch ra cho mình…

Còn óc hiếu kỳ hiển nhiên luôn nằm trong đầu mỗi PVA, anh không thể vô tư "bỏ quên đời" như một nhà thơ trong những lúc "bay bổng" được. Thật sai lầm nếu tiếp cận những cảnh tượng mới PVA lại tự hỏi mình "Chuyện này có gì mà hấp dẫn vậy?". Chính óc hiếu kỳ luôn luôn thôi thúc mỗi PVA theo đuổi thông tin.
