Dickey Betts Dead at 80

- “The monuments that he helped to create for Southern rock will never be replicated,” the Marshall Tucker Band says

Dickey Betts, the Allman Brothers Band co-founder who was ousted from the group in 2000, has died, the guitarist’s family said.

Betts, 80, died April 18 at his home in Florida. No cause was given.

Betts’ family remembered the musician as a “legendary performer, songwriter, bandleader and family patriarch” in their statement.

“His loss will be felt worldwide,” they said.

With Betts’ death, drummer Jaimoe is the last surviving original Allman Brother.

“Sad, sad day,” Tinsley Ellis said. “Rest in peace, Dickey Betts.”

Betts co-founded the ABB in 1969, establishing a 12-string conversation with fellow guitarist Duane Allman and quickly became “an essential component of the Allman Brothers Band’s improvisatory magic,” as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame said in a eulogy.

“One of the best to ever do it,” Tedeschi Trucks Band said of Betts. “Rest easy, Dickie.”

After Duane’s death, Betts, as lone axeman, was the country to Gregg Allman’s blues, giving the band its biggest hit with “Ramblin’ Man” and imbuing the ABB songbook with epic instrumentals such as the jazzy “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed,” inspired by a tombstone in the cemetery where Gregg and Duane Allman now lie, and the countrified “Jessica,” inspired by Betts’ daughter. And Betts’ 1974 LP Highway Call is an album anyone who calls themselves a fan of bluegrass or Americana music must have in their collection.

“Dickie more than anyone had an impressionable impact in shaping and defining the genre of music that has come to be known as Southern rock,” the Outlaws said in a statement. “The influence of his musicianship and songwriting skills are immeasurable and his passing marks the end of an era.”

The Marshall Tucker Band echoed the Outlaws, saying: “The monuments that (Betts) helped to create for Southern rock will never be replicated.”

After a time, the ABB returned to its two-guitar format and Betts played alongside such masters as Dan Toler, Warren Haynes, Jack Pearson and Derek Trucks before he and the group split acrimoniously in 2000.

“He was passionate in life, be it music, songwriting, fishing, hunting, boating, golf, karate or boxing,” the Allman Brothers said in a statement attributed to the “band, family and crew.”

“Dickey was all in on and excelled at anything that caught his attention. … Play on, Brother Dickey, you will be forever remembered and deeply missed.”

I believe this is entirely a ploy for attention and outrage from (now fired) Fox News bloviator Tucker Carlson; although apparently the US has considered the potential of war with Canada for some time.

For everyone yelling and screaming about how they don't want to be "liberated" i.e. invaded by the United States, I am disappointed at the lack of references to the War of 1812, which had pretty much the same casus belli.

"In Jeffersonian plans, the war would liberate Canada while defending slavery in the American South," Alan Taylor writes in The Civil War Of 1812: American Citizens, British Subjects, Irish Rebels, and Indian Allies. Taylor also finds racial motivations in the American reaction to British impressment—which "accounts for the prominence of slave-state congressmen in pushing for a military crusade to liberate white men from a bondage deemed fit only for blacks."

British alliances with Indigenous nations were also portrayed in a negative light, and according to Taylor, American General William Hull (who surrendered Fort Detroit to a small British force because he was so afraid of "savages") represented "a white man’s republic premised on subduing Indians as savages—in contrast to the British policy of allying with them as warriors." You can't invade Canada without some kind of culture war pretext, apparently. Then as now!

La storia di musica di oggi non si sposta dalla Florida. Anzi, non si sposta nemmeno da Jacksonville, la città dei Lynyrd Skynyrd della scorsa settimana. Perchè quando nei primi anni ‘70 Dave Hlubek, chitarrista, voleva fondare una band, ai leggendari concittadini si voleva ispirare. Si aggregano a lui Danny Joe Brown, cantante dalla voce impostata e caratteristica, le due chitarre di Steve Holland e Duane Roland, per una nuova versione della linea a tre chitarre che fece la fortuna dei Lynyrd, una delle sezioni ritmiche più affiatate e toste del rock americano, Banner Thomas al basso e la grande tecnica di Bruce Crump alla batteria. Come nome scelgono Molly Hatchet, da quello di una leggendaria prostituta che durante la Guerra Civile decapitava i suoi clienti più rudi, e il cui fantasma a volte si ripresenta nelle spettrali serate invernali delle paludi di quei posti. L’inizio è complicato, e nonostante una incessante e proficua carriera dal vivo nei club della contea, dovranno passare ben 5 anni prima che vengano notati da una casa discografica. La Epic però gli offre la possibilità di registrare ai famosi studi di registrazione The Sound Pit di Atlanta con la supervisione di Tom Werman, all’epoca uno dei più grandi produttori del rock americano, che lavorerà con alcuni dei più grandi gruppi del rock a stelle e strisce (Ted Nugent, Cheap Trick, Blue Öyster Cult, Mother's Finest, Mötley Crüe). Il disco è registrato proprio durante i mesi della grande emozione per l’incidente aereo dei Lynyrd, con il loro disco appena uscito, Street Survivors, in testa alle classifiche. Molly Hatchet appare nei negozi di dischi il 1 settembre 1978: è un mix di hard rock boogie (marchio di fabbrica di Werman) spinto dal muro sonoro delle tre chitarre e dalla voce, un po’ roca e caratteristica, di Danny Joe Brown. In scaletta 9 brani, scritti insieme dalla band, brani avvolgenti, caldi, che li caratterizzano subito rispetto ad altri gruppi per la loro aria scanzonata e un po’ strafottente. Bounty Hunter è la canzone che apre il disco e mette in chiaro l’energica vena musicale del gruppo; diventerà uno dei momenti più attesi dai fan nei loro concerti dal vivo; Gator Country, altro grande classico, è l’apoteosi del loro suono a tre chitarre, una carrellata di citazioni dei più grandi artisti del Southern (dai Lynyrd a Charlie Daniels, dai fratelli Allman alla Marshall Tucker Band). Big Apple è un rock blues scanzonato che nel testo prende in giro New York ed i suoi abitanti, in pieno stile orgoglio sudista. The Creeper è l’archetipo del classico slow hard rock del genere, di cui i Molly Hatchet diventeranno dei paladini. The Price You Pay è leggera e frizzante, I’ll Be Running è una grande prova della sezione ritmica Thomas/Crump, Cheatin’ Woman è un altro slow rock sofferto che sa di delusione ai banconi dei bar e di malinconia sudista. Trust Your Old Friend è il brano che chiude il disco, un puro boogie rock veloce e elettrico. Ma il grande brano è un altro:  ma la riproposizione Dreams di Greg Allman, anche con influenze della cover che ne fece del brano Buddy Guy nel 1970 nel suo disco Them Changes, qui diviene Dreams I’ll Never See ed è un vero capolavoro, con i toni più soft e sofisticati della parte introduttiva che quasi stridono con la forza vigorosa della cavalcata finale, che si lega alla potenza e al carattere degli altri brani. Il disco venderà oltre un milione di copie, i brani della band diventeranno tra i preferiti delle Adult Oriented Rock Radio americane e inizierà un periodo d’oro per la band, che inizierà tournée frenetiche da oltre 250 concerti all’anno. Alla mitologia del disco e della band concorreranno anche le copertine: la prima, leggendaria, prende in prestito The Death Dealer del mitico disegnatore Frank Frazetta, uno dei suoi capolavori, il quale diventerà simbolo di uno dei corpi speciali dell’esercito americano e uno dei dipinti di fumettisti più pagati di tutti i tempi, valendo un originale oltre il milione di dollari. I Molly Hatchet utilizzeranno altri capolavori di Frazetta per il successivi dischi. Flirtin’ With Disaster (1979, in copertina Dark Kingdom), disco della consacrazione con brani mito come la spettacolare Boogie No More, Whiskey Man, It’s All Over Now. Nel 1980 Danny Joe Brown è sostituito dal cantante Jimmy Farrar per problemi di diabete: in copertina uno spettacolare Conan Il Barbaro di Frazetta, ma Beatin’ The Odds, nonostante la spettacolare title track, è stroncato dalla critica, non dal pubblico che regala l’ennesimo disco in classifica. La Band ha un buon seguito fino al 1989, quando Danny Joe Brown, rientrano nel 1985 nello splendido Double Trouble Live (1985), è costretto di nuovo ad abbandonare le scene, e la band si scioglie. La storia dei Molly Hatchet continuerà, tanto che nel 2005 si riformano formalmente, anche con nuovi dischi, ma non paragonabili al furore sudista dei loro grandi capolavori.

After pizza, they gather in the living room. The teens talk but Bebe and Joey slip away.

"Jackie charmed a dolphin today out on St. Taz," Dee tells Duane.

"I bet that happens a lot here," Veronica puts in quickly.

"Are they safe?" Dee asks him.

"Dolphins are smart. If they don't want to interact with you, they'll avoid you. They know where people go."

"He just wanted to say hi." Jackie smiles at the memory.

"Oh, brother," Veronica whispers.

Joey slips up next to Trix. "Can I show you something?"

"In a minute."

He stares at her until she gets up.

"I just think it's important that we take care of our planet," Jackie is saying as they leave.

"Wow!" Veronica bursts out. "Since when have you...."

"Always. Do you not listen to Mom?"

Joey leads Trix back to his room. Before he opens the door, he says, "Promise you won't tell."

Is he serious? She shrugs and nods. She's no snitch.

He pulls open the door and it's hard to see what's going on at first. It's like there's another wall in front of the door but then Bebe climbs out from under it – it's a blanket fort!

"Wow! You guys did this?"

"We found sheets in a cabinet," Joey explains.

"And very quietly moved chairs from the kitchen," Bebe says proudly.

"I love it!"

They settle in under the fort with pillows, books, and toys. Joey stretches out with his deep sea diver (that's what it's become this week).

"Why do you always hang out with the big kids, Trix?" Bebe asks. "Joey is much more interesting." She turns to her brother. "Joey, do you think you have vacation phobia?"

He considers this. "I think I'm getting better."

"I like hanging out with everybody," Trix defends herself, but if she were truthful, she does like hanging out with her older sisters more. It bugs her to be the younger twin and she's looking forward to being older.  

"It seems you like hanging out with them better though." It's like Bebe read her mind. Maybe she did! Twins, after all, though Trix has never read Bebe's mind.

"Let's just play, okay?" Joey interrupts.

Later, nearly tuckered out, they end up in a pile looking up at the blanket ceiling.

"What if the sky looked like that all the time?" Bebe ponders.

"We should make a pact," Joey suggests.

"A pact that Trix sticks with us."

"That's not a pact, Bebe, that's just you bossing me around." She will always be the younger twin but.... "But I had fun."

...

Outside, Duane is heading home, if he can get around Veronica on the path.

"I'm so glad you came over tonight," she tells him. "Sorry about my family."

"Why? You're so lucky! The family I live with is good to me but I don't have anyone close to my age at home."

This is new information to Vee. "I guess. Can I see you again?"

He smiles. "Sure! I do have to work some festivals this week but maybe you could come and we could hang out afterwards?"

"I'd like that." The way he's looking at her now – could this be it?

"Okay," he says.

Lizzy’s Book Recs

After posting a little book recommendation a few weeks ago, I received a few comments about some more recs. And seeing as I am currently reading book 70 for the year, I thought it could be fun. So this is what this post is. These are all contemporary romances (I'm not a historical fiction fan) and will be either new adult or adult romance. Sorry, but I’m too old for young adult these days as teenagers piss me off.  

These will be placed into categories of my favourite tropes. 

Enemies to Lovers:

The Hating Game by Sally Thorne. This has to be hands down the best enemies to lovers story I have ever read. This is about Lucy and Josh, both assistants at a publishing company. She’s happy, he’s grumpy. They are colleagues and enemies, they fight all the time. But the sexual tension is off the charts. The best slow burn book I’ve ever read and definitely worth the wait. (plus this is going to be a movie with Lucy Hale and Robbie Amell, perfect right?)

Vicious by LJ Shen. Baron (Vicious) Spencer is an asshole. He’s a rich, spoilt brat with one love. Emilia Leblanc. He wanted her when they were teenagers, but she was with his best friend. He is a bully, mean and a horrible person to her and forces her to leave the state when he doesn’t get what he wants. Years later, he needs her help. She begins to work for him and discovers the act he puts on to hide his true scars. This book is sexy and dark. Not a cute fluffy story. But a good read (just don’t take it too seriously)

Into The Wild by KA Tucker. A big-city girl from Toronto goes to Alaska to visit her sick dad she hasn’t seen in over 25 years. Calla runs into cocky bush pilot Jonah. He hates her spoilt brat personality, she can't stand his cocky attitude. Hate turns to like, and eventually. Love. This is one of the best books I’ve read this year. This story is sad, funny, sweet and romantic. And has the best banter ever. (plus there is a sequel) Eeek. 

Red, White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuisten. What happens when the prince of England and the first son of the USA have a secret gay love affair? This book, I love! They hate each other, then they become friends then they become lovers. The end. Perfect book. Just perfect. 

Hate They Neighbour by S.M Soto. Sexy bad boy jerk Roman gets a new neighbour with sweet Olivia. She wants to be his friend, he is nothing but mean to her. She is recovering from a broken heart, he is trying to keep his family together. This is HOT HOT HOT! This has one of the sexist scenes I’ve ever read in a while including a lollipop. Trust me, this is soo good. 

Friends to Lovers

Beard Science by Penny Reid. Jennifer is sick of being under her parent's thumb so she in lists the town’s evil genius, Cletus to help her and find her husband. I love this book, Jennifer is sweet. Cletus is not. He is brash and no-nonsense but I love him. Their love story is so sweet and turns from friends to lovers in such a sweet way it will have you awwing in no time. 

Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating by Christina Lauren. This is another fav. While I love a bad boy, sometimes the good guys do finish first. This is a friend to lovers story. Quirky Hazel and newly single Josh decided to set each other up on dates. When they are a series of disasters one after the other, and a drunken night later. They end up in bed together and discover love was in front of them the whole time. This is a cute and heartwarming story. You can never go wrong with a book by Christina Lauren. 

Strangers to Lovers

Beard in Mind by Penny Reid. OMG! You can not get me to shut up about Penny Reid and her Winston series. It is the best series I have ever read. Every book is perfect. But this one here is my favourite of the series. This is a story about kind-hearted Beau Winston. He meets new mechanic at his garage Shelly Sullivan. She is bold, brash and has no filter. While Beau is used to women being charmed by his smile and good looks. Shelly is different. This book deals with some sensitive issues so if you get trigged by self-harm and real conversations about mental health. Stay clear. But this book is so good. Beau is the best book boyfriend ever. And I love him. (shoutout to Truth of Beard. Duane is Beau’s twin and his love story is so good)

Sweet Filthy Boy by Christina Lauren. I know, I’ve got another Christina Lauren book on the list, but I just love them. And this book is one of their best! Mia and her friends go to Vegas after college. They get drunk, meet some handsome men and oopps, they get married. Mia wakes up married to sexy Frenchman Ansel. He invites her to Paris for the summer. And she accepts. After a horrible start, they begin to learn more about each other and fall for each other in the city of love. This book is so hot, and while Ansel may be the sweetest he has a dirty mouth and a few secrets in his closet. (This is part of a series involving Mia and her 2 other friends that also got married in Vegas. They are worth a read, but this one is my favourite)

Second Chance Romance

You Deserve Each Other by Sarah Hogle. I wasn't sure where to put this one because it is a second chance romance and enemies to lovers. Anyway, this story is about Naomi and Nicholas. They are engaged but hate each other. Naomi wants to call off the engagement, the bad news is she can’t afford to fit the bill. So she tries to get Nicholas to end it instead. They are mean and horrible to each other, but as they spend more time together they soon begin to realise what they loved in the first place. When I first started this book I was in the belief that this couple should not be together. But by the end, all I wanted was them to be happy together. I loved this book, not as hot as the others. But worth a read. 

Workplace Romance

Neanderthal Seeks Human by Penny Reid. What a surprise, another Penny Reid Book on my list. This is the first book in the Knitting in the City series (which I am currently reading right now and am on book 3) This is the story of Janie. In one day she is fired, finds out her boyfriend cheated on her and is kicked out of her apartment. That same day she meets Quinn Sullivan. He escorts her out of the building only to run into her again a few weeks later and save her from being drugged at a club. He gets her new job and turns out to be the millionaire boss. This is a lovely story. Janie has to be the most quirky heroine I’ve ever read. And I love her. (There is also a sequel called Neanderthal marries human which is also good.)
