Hello from the Blue Eye in Albania! When I first learned about this place, I HAD to go. It was worth the rain ride and is one of my favorite natural wonders I’ve visited so far. Hello from the Greek island of Crete! This is the first ferry Athena and I rode a ferry! We went from Gytheio to Kissamos on Crete! And I’m going to be real with y’all. I was miserable and this voyage put me out. I got nauseous and had to lie horizontal for 7 hours. I tried to nap, but woke up sweating because my body DID NOT like the rocking. I was on one of those huge ferries too. I was worried Athena was going to tip over and I expressed this to the folks manning the parking situation below and they kindly ratchet strapped her to the wall for me. This expedition is putting me in situations I’ve never been in and testing my physical limitations. Now I know my body doesn’t like long ferry rides. But this was worth it to me. I couldn’t visit Greece without visiting a Greek island, so this was worth the pain. And I surely wasn’t going to leave Athena behind! 😹 No pain, no glory. Happy Monday y’all! Hello from the Archaeological Site of Mystra! The wonders of Peloponnese never cease to amaze me. Overlooking the ancient city of Sparta, Mystra features two levels: the castle above and monasteries and churches below. It was built in 1248 AD by the Franks and then constantly exchanged hands by being captured by the Byzantines, Turks and then Venetians. It was finally abandoned in 1834 as the inhabitants of Mystras gradually started to move to the modern town of Sparta down the mountain. I came here early and was one of the only people walking around. Some of the walls, churches and monasteries are in very good condition. I enjoyed walking around the whole site and was very thankful to have my bike so I could ride from the upper level to the lower level. I’m happy I’m able to see all these amazing sites with my motorcycle. I’m not smiling, I’m manically laughing inside. So my worldwide riding friend David that I met in Serbia, we randomly linked up in Athens! Remember, this is the same rider I asked to ride in the Balkan winter for 6 hours to see a waterfall in Serbia that was dry. Teehee, oops 🙃 So what did I do? I asked if he wanted to do a day trip in the cold with me again. It’s so funny, the most annoyed grumbling groan comes out of his body when he sees me. I think he intentionally avoids me sometimes. But hey, he can only say no 8 times in a row before he stops hiding behind the fridge. I can see you, David. I’m a persistent little critter. So here we are. Look how warmly dressed he is. In Greece, you can find me where land meets sea. I didn’t plan this day. I just meandered and let free flow take me. I followed the road to the dead end, got off my bike, let my curiosity take control and just started walking. I found myself all by myself at the very tippy tippy of this rocky barren peninsula. I’ve found history to be interesting, but honestly it was just another subject to pass high school. But now that I am in such old towns with thousands of year old history, I find it so fascinating. It’s crazy to me how long lasting some structures are with old methodologies of construction. It honestly baffles me along with the workmanship, effort and time spent creating such magnificent buildings. I was like…the higher I go, the colder it’ll be and it’s likely there’s snow on the road. Do you see how thickly coated that snowpack is? And just like that, we made it to Greece! 👋 I am so excited to ride this country because of my love for Greek mythology as a kid. Anyone else a fan of Greek folklore? This was the strictest border crossing yet! I crossed at night so I was shivering, there was a long line, they required an entry Visa which I didn’t know about, so I filled it out on my phone with the spotty internet I had leftover from North Macedonia, and then I was reprimanded for not filling it out earlier, the agents thoroughly reviewed all my bike documents which made me very nervous. They even asked for the bike contract and had me unpack all my things to find this form (No one asked for this document in the 2 months of traveling so far). Once they saw it, they told me to get out of the way and pack all my things on the side of the road, so I wouldn’t hold up traffic. It’s times like these that make traveling alone hard because it’s just me navigating a new place with new rules, preventing all my things from blowing away in the dark, and panic repacking my things in the cold so I don’t get hit by a car. Even though most days are good, there are hard days to test your grit and power within. I know I did 😺 So I finally leave Skopje and am very excited to head to the ancient archaeological site of Stobi. But of course, it starts raining, lightly snowing and the wind is starting to pick up. My body just can’t tolerate the cold anymore. My fingers are numb, I’m soaking wet and I decide to pull over in the next town and get a room for the night. I sleep early, and try again for Stobi the next morning. Just because it takes a little longer to get to our end goal, it doesn’t diminish the effort it took to get there.
