Israel has cut water, electricity and food to Palestinians in Gaza. They are buying 10.000 M16 rifles and plan to distribute to civilian settlers in the West Bank to hunt down Palestinians. They're bombing the only way out of Gaza through Egypt, after telling refugees to flee through it, and have threatened the Egyptian government in case they let aid trucks pass through. Entire families, generations, are being wiped out and left to wander the streets hoping they don't get bombed.
Palestinians are using their last minutes of battery to let the world know about their genocide and are being met with a wall of "What about Hamas? What about the beheaded babies? Killing children on either side is bad!" even though the propaganda claims have been debunked over and over again. How cruel is it to ask somebody to condemn themselves before their last words? Or before grieving the loss of their entire families? When there's no such disclaimer to Israelis even though their government has shown over and over genocidal intent? Like who are you even trying to appease? What will your wishy washy statement do against decades of zionist thought infiltrating evangelical and Jewish stablishmemts?
Take action. Israel will fall back if public opinion turns its tide. The UK fell back on its bloody decision to cut aid to Palestine under public scrutiny. The USAmerican empire spends $3.8 billion dollars annually solely on this proxy war while its people suffer under a progressively military regime as well. News outlets are canceling last minute on Palestinian speakers while letting Israelis tell lies unchecked. Palestinian refugees are being targeted in ICE establishments and mosques are already being hounded by the FBI. France and Germany have banned pro-Palestine protests, while Netherlands and the UK have placed restrictions . You have the chance to stop this from turning into repeat of the Iraq war.
I want to do something but there's hardly anything for me to do from Brasil besides spreading the word and not letting these testimonies fall on deaf ears. I'm asking you to do this same ant work from wherever you are.

Kinda catching up this week after getting so sick. I couldn't be happier with Bfr than I am at the moment. Every day I trust it a little more.
My mom confronted me in the weirdest way possible bc she was anxious that I was going to move out of my current apartment secretly and not tell her where I was going. This was based on me not texting her as much (uhh she's been terrible to me lately so why would I?) and the fact that I missed ONE call from her. She also told me a few days ago "not to take the first job" I'm offered "just to take a job" which I've been CLEAR is the EXACT plan all along, so I didn't even respond. It's obvious to me that she's finally feeling the pressure of reality: she told me to get a job and made my current living situation intolerable—so I'm getting a job and moving in with my partner. She's lost the "power" in the equation and it's making her spiral. Especially sad because I don't WANT it to be a power balance relationship. I want a mom who just wants me to be happy and healthy. In reality, what my mom wants is a dedicated drinking and shopping partner, and it doesn't matter to her that I'm sober now and making consistently healthier choices with Bfr.
Next week we're both going to Chicago for three nights for the DSA national convention! That will be tiring and fun and a good change of scenery for a while. It'll be our first travel together, so that'll be telling.
I'm almost totally recovered from having bronchitis/pneumonia! All good news really. The next thing I need is to get hired 🤞🤞🤞

Sometimes I think about how northerners talk about the south—about the gay guy I know who told someone he’s from Alabama and they said “oh that must be so hard for you”, about the people who went “oh ~wow~” when I told them I was moving back south after law school, about the time someone who I guarantee is from the northeast joked that people in Mississippi just don’t write things down, about the roommate from Minnesota who casually said “people in the south don’t have rights”, about the roommate from New Hampshire who talked about southerners as if we were all conservative, about the grad school classmates in California who said “ohhh” and then immediately changed the topic when I told them my dad made safety videos for petrochemical refineries because that’s pretty much the only industry in Cancer Alley, about my friend’s partner who laughed at the idea of me finding someone progressive & smart (& preferably well-off because I will not be) to date in the south—and then I compare it to the southerners I see whenever I leave the house down here?
There’s a guy in my parents’ neighborhood out in the exurbs where the country begins who flies a Ukrainian flag now. Driving this week, I saw a car with a Better South, Better World sticker turning into this city’s NFL team’s training camp. I got my hair cut in the conservative suburbs this week and there was a woman in a pride flag T-shirt. I went to a museum today and there were multiple queer couples and gender nonconforming folks wandering around holding hands. I went to pick up some cake from a local gay baker and there was a woman who walked by wearing a tank top saying “Jesus loves sex workers.” Like I don’t know, y’all. Sure, the south is a fucking terrifying place to be sometimes. Sure, we’re gerrymandered to hell. Sure, our elected officials would sell us all out for a solitary corn chip. But the south is full of badass people who have spent their lives fighting and are more functionally progressive in a lot of ways by virtue of that than any leftist card-carrying DSA member I’ve met in either CA or NYC. Will they use the same terms as y’all? Maybe not. Will they have some reservations about some things? For sure. But these people are tough af and deserve way more respect than they get 87% of the time.
Anyway I feel like that rant has been building for approximately six years so uh. There y’all go!

How to spot when you're in a cult
How to recognize that you’re in a cult seems so obvious and therefore unnecessary to ask that most people never even bother to do so.
Consequently, it should not be a surprise so many people continue to find themselves in cults and not realize it till years later, if at all.
Let’s get a quick, short definition out of the way, borrowed from the French Interministerial Mission for the Fight against Drugs and Addictive Behaviors:
"A cult is an organized group or a solitary person whose purpose is to dominate cult members by using psychological manipulation and pressure strategies."
A couple of misconceptions: we are not talking about New Religious Movements (NREs)—at least not exclusively. To begin with, those are not necessarily cults, and more importantly, cults are not exclusively "religious" movements.
From Heaven's Gate to Scientology to for-profit face-to-face canvassing, you cannot rely on the self-description of an organization to accurately describe what it does, and like with NXIVM, it usually isn't the supernatural or religious aspects that are actually problematic.
A cult may never have explicitly supernatural or spiritual aspects; they may define themselves by their strict adherence to materialism, even. Thus, if those are the red flags you're looking for, you're not going to notice when no one is talking about god, reincarnation, or quantum pseudoscience.
Cults are a normal part of modern society, not something only at the fringe.
Considering the likely audience of this, it may be tempting to say, “No gods, no masters,” or “obviously capitalism is a cult.”
But this is a feature that appears within the radical, anticapitalist left as well.
The abusiveness of the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL) or Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), of Bob Avakian's Revolutionary Communist Party USA, or Gazi Kodzo's Black Hammer organization and its rapid turn toward failed Colorado commune and predation of unhoused people in Atlanta — it is not just “those people” who can fall into this. A Maoist transbian polycule with a central node who controls the sex lives of her partners while leading the “self-crit” sessions — this is only tangentially the faults of capitalism.
No one is immune from this, no one is safe. Because while cults can express themselves in all of these various ways, they are not only taking advantage of the weakest or worst of us; they don’t even always take us in our weakest or worst moments.
Cults also will, like a cordyceps fungus, repurpose your strengths and talent to their own ends. Your incredible intelligence and reasoning abilities will be turned to explaining why you should continue to support this particular cult despite all evidence to the contrary. Your empathy will make you care about others still in the cult that leaving it would mean leaving behind. You will convince yourself that reform is possible and you just need to go through the proper channels that the abusers just happen also to control.
To review: a cult can like anything and anyone can find themselves in one.
But most cults by their nature do not lead with the weirdest shit first. Some go as far as to have front companies recruiting people to one thing, then slowly introduce this other thing when a target is thought suitable and their defenses are down.
For most people, there won’t be a clear, sudden indicator because they will be surrounded by others who treat these power dynamics as normal and good. Peer pressure is not just something middle schoolers fall victim to but something all of us experience.
Even if you leave, all that does is reinforce the survivor bias and culture of those who remain, feeding the narratives of exclusivity, elitism, and persecution to keep members cleaved from the outside.
Back to the question: how do you spot that you’re in a cult?
It’s crucial that you actually bother to ask. It’s crucial that you have the humility to assess your surroundings, your choices, and be willing to walk away from stuff you’ve invested in when you realize your mistake, sunk costs be damned.
There are various guides you can use, but a pretty robust if still subjective one is Isaac Bonewits’ Advanced Bonewits Cult Danger Evaluation Frame (ABCDEF), rating 18 categories to score from one-to-10.
There are others. ABCDEF works best for new religious movements; Gwen Snyder taking business cults to task highlighted some issues Bonewits did not.
Certainly, neither person is themself infallible. Consider both nothing more than starting points.
So far, we haven’t talked much about anarchist groups or dynamics, and you may assume that’s because we are not power worshipers, fascists, Marxist-Leninists, so our praxis inoculates us.
That is bunk.
It is true that anarchist critiques of hierarchy apply to cults as well. An anarchist may not always be able to recognize a hierarchy, but we ought to have a good idea of our response when we do.
Yet anarchists are not immune from becoming cult leaders. Those who exploit others this way are not uniquely evil or a different species from us. A cult leader may be wholly sincere and actually believe they are just that special, that irreplaceable.
If you are an anarchist, you should always be thinking about and planning for your replacement. You will die one day. You may be disabled before that, or jailed before that, or "canceled"; don't think you are not capable of being an abuser, including in ways that meant almost nothing to you but everything to who you hurt.
Anything you're doing should not rely solely on you to not fail. The group you are part of should not require one person, you or anyone else, who is so essential that others are tempted to give them a pass because the work is so important and they are so valuable to the work.
Having said all this, is the vaccination against hierarchical cult abuses a panacea against all abuses? Clearly not.
A cult is one kind of hierarchy.
It is often starkly hierarchical and dangerous but not the only way for an organization or group dynamics to be abusive. We have to work very hard to guard ourselves against these, too; that is anarchism.
We need collective action from non-blood relations willing to work together and help one another. We need to radically re-imagine and embody different ways of living, different possibilities of seeing the world. The taboos of the status quo are not extant always because they serve most of us or benefit any but a few.
And still, attempts to create alternatives to what we have inherited are not guaranteed to be improvements, and in our desperation at the state of the world or just our own lives, we can pursue groups—usually new groups—that lack the protective guardrails erected by necessity to keep a collective functioning since, without them, the group implodes.
How do you spot you're in a cult?
Think about what power is and who has it, and never stop looking or talking to other people about what you see.
Interrogate yourself, don't make excuses for your friends, and kill your heroes so you can meet real people worth knowing.

Cynthia Nixon, the actor best known for her role on HBO's Sex and the City, revealed Monday that she will be undertaking a hunger strike as part of a call for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.
The Gaza territory is currently embroiled in an intense conflict between the Israeli military and the Palestinian militant group, Hamas, which carried out a historically bloody attack against Israel on October 7, killing over 1,200 people, according to the Associated Press. In response, Israeli military strikes in Gaza have killed over 13,000, the AP reported. This escalating conflict has led to a fierce international discourse, with many calling for a ceasefire in Gaza to provide relief to the civilians engulfed by the fighting.
Among prominent public figures voicing support for a ceasefire is Nixon, who on Monday "joined prominent Muslim, Jewish and allied leaders, and state legislators from New York and Delaware" for a press conference outside the White House, at which she announced her participation in a five-day hunger strike as part of a call for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, according to a press release provided to Newsweek. A temporary ceasefire between Israeli and Hamas forces is currently in place, but the press release argued that "Israel is expected to intensify its genocidal bombing campaign on Gaza once the pause is over," citing a report last week from CNN based on comments made by Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.
The United Nations (UN) describes genocide as "a crime committed with the intent to destroy a national, ethnic, racial or religious group, in whole or in part." While the press release echoed the beliefs of some in likening the deaths of Gaza civilians to genocide, supporters of Israel have denied claims that the country is carrying out genocide against Palestinians.
Nixon is best known for her role as Miranda Hobbes, whom she played for six seasons on Sex and the City, in two theatrical feature films, and on two-going-on-three seasons of the Max original sequel series And Just Like That. She has also been outspoken over the years in her left-wing political beliefs, once challenging Andrew Cuomo for the Democratic nomination for governor of New York in 2018. Though she is not Jewish herself, the two children she had with former partner Danny Mozes are, a fact she highlighted in speaking about her decision to undertake a hunger strike.
"As the mother of Jewish children whose grandparents are Holocaust survivors, I have been asked by my son to use my platform to project as loudly as possible that 'never again' means never again for everyone," Nixon said. "As an American, I am here to demand that our President [Joe Biden] stop funding the mass killing and starvation of thousands of innocent Palestinians, the majority of whom are children and women. President Biden must use this moment to negotiate a permanent ceasefire that will bring all the hostages and political prisoners home and start to lay the foundation for a lasting peace."
Nixon was previously among the over 250 celebrities to sign off on a letter calling for a Gaza ceasefire. The press release on Monday claimed that the hunger strike initiative had been endorsed by numerous organizations, including the U.S. Campaign for Palestinian Rights (USCPR), the Adalah Justice Project (AJP), Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP), the IfNotNow Movement, Dream Defenders, the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), the Institute for Middle East Understanding (IMEU), and the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC).
Newsweek reached out to the White House via email for comment.
While Biden, as well as many other U.S. lawmakers, have been broadly supportive of Israel's response to Hamas, he has more recently begun making overtures to those more opposed to the conflict. Biden has touted American diplomatic efforts that helped broker an agreement for the temporary ceasefire and the release of 50 hostages by Hamas. Over the weekend, The Washington Post also reported that Biden has allegedly expressed regret over his past skepticism of the Palestinian death toll in Gaza, though he has not spoken publicly on the matter.

As part of a wider attempt to curb revenge porn and child sexual abuse, the European Commission has designated the well-known adult companies Pornhub, Stripchat and XVideos as Very Large Online Platforms, VLOPs, which means they will come under closer scrutiny.
“I welcome the designations of Pornhub, XVideos and Stripchat as Very Large Online Platforms. It will allow for higher scrutiny and accountability of their algorithms and processes. The DSA [Digital Services Act] demonstrates once again that it is an essential tool to ensure that technology respects the fundamental rights of European citizens,” Margrethe Vestager, Vice-President of Europe Fit for the Digital Age, said.
By February 17, 2024, the three companies will need to adopt specific measures to protect minors from harmful content and address the dissemination of illegal content.
Pornhub is a pornography video-sharing website based in Cyprus. Stripchat [Technius Ltd.], also based in Cyprus, is a live sex and entertainment community, and XVideos, based in the Czech Republic, is a pornographic video-sharing and viewing website. According to the Commission, the three companies fulfil the threshold of 45 million average monthly users in the EU.
“The criteria to determine if a platform is “very large” in the sense of the Digital Services Act are very straightforward,” stated Thierry Breton, Commissioner for the Internal Market.
“Any online platform with more than 45 million users in the EU has special obligations because of its scale. We have already designated 19 Very Large Online Platforms and Search Engines. We will continue to designate platforms that meet the thresholds and make sure that they comply with their obligations under the DSA … creating a safer online environment for our children is an enforcement priority under the DSA,” he added.
Pornhub on its website wrote that it has 33 million average monthly users, not 45 million: “As of July 31, 2023, Pornhub has 33 million average monthly recipients of the service in the European Union, calculated as an average over the period of the past six months,” it said.
The Commission’s decision comes amid rising concern about revenge porn and child sexual abuse.
Revenge porn, on its own, is not defined as a criminal offence in most Balkan countries. Greece made it an independent criminal offence in the criminal code in 2022 following the case of a TV presenter, Stathis Panagiotopoulos, who shared the sexual content of his partner on a porn platform. Besides that change, the porn industry is unregulated in Greece.
The Commission under the DSA designated 17 VLOPs and 2 Very Large Online Search Engines, VLOSEs, in April 2023, aiming to protect users online, including minors, requiring the companies to assess and mitigate their systemic risks and to provide robust content moderation tools.
The designated platforms were Alibaba AliExpress, Amazon Store, Apple AppStore, Booking.com, Facebook, Google Play, Google Maps, Google Shopping, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Snapchat, TikTok, Twitter, Wikipedia, YouTube, Zalando, Bing and Google Search.
