The first arc: A Summary

Been replaying Dragonspyre with my friend and one thing that I’ve always found fascinating about it is the way that it handles the ghosts.
All throughout the world, you see that every human has been killed. Dragonspyre is a ruined world, and the only people still around are the servants of the dragon titan. In place of everyone who’s been killed, a ghost stands where they once stood.
What I love about the ghosts is their various levels of comprehension of the state that they’re in. Some of the ghosts acknowledge what happened, that the dragon titan completely razed their world. However, many don’t. In fact, there’s a decent number of Dragonspyre ghosts who flat-out don’t even realize they’re dead. One that struck a cord with me in particular said something to the effect of “I’m no longer tangible”, seemingly understanding his state as “still alive but not able to touch things for some mysterious reason”. Many of the ghosts make excuses for the fact that they can’t do what they once did when they were alive. This is either because they don’t realize they are dead, or my interpretation, that they don’t want to acknowledge that their lives were cut short.
I also love that so many of the ghosts are very much stuck in their ways from when they were alive. It’s basically left up to interpretation whether that’s a symptom of them being a ghost, or if that militant adherence to order and rules is a symptom of growing up in Dragonspyre’s culture that’s impossible to shake. There’s an NPC, Belia Windgazer, who is still running paperwork for the vaults, even though that paperwork is coming from and going to no one, and is not useful for a single person. It’s running through the motions of the busywork that you did when you were alive, and that’s kind of nightmarish. Even in death, they don’t get any rest.
Another NPC, Zanna Fireflower, has made it her main priority to secure a tower that has visibly been toppled a long time ago, leaving only a single floor. She sees this as a necessary military accomplishment. However, in the present day, this is basically entirely meaningless from both an objective and political viewpoint. Gaining control of this tower does nothing for nobody, the tower doesn’t even stand there anymore. Is this fixation simply something that is static beyond the grave, or is it such a point of pride for her that she can’t let go of such a pointless task all these years later?
Playing through Pirate101 and getting to the point where you meet the four ghosts of Ratbeard’s crew adds a new layer to this situation as well. In that game, those ghosts cannot move on from the mortal realm and go to the next life because they still have unsettled business in this world. Does that imply that with such a massive tragedy on Dragonspyre, the dragon titan not only killed countless people, but doomed them to never rest in peace and move to the next world due to the fact that all of their lives had been cut tragically short, leaving every one of them with unfinished business? Absolutely horrifying stuff

One of my favorite things in Wizard101, is when you and a group of people end up doing all the dungeons within an area together when none of you know each other.
Im trying to finish up Dragonspyre on my death wiz and these two guys im with have been with me for three dungeons now and we all have waited for each other to get to them before we start.

Fun fact: raids have lore. This lore is completely detached from main story lore, but it exists.

Im sure someone who cares more abt Dragonspyre's lore in general can try to tie this to other stuff.

I started this drawing before the spellements update, but I think it’s still relevant. :P Also, as soon as I finished Lemuria on my main wizard (the Life wizard in the second panel!), I fixated on the idea of finally learning Pigsie/Ratatoskr’s Spin.  It only occurred to me later that this was a very in-character decision for her.  Sometimes, you miserably farm a boss in order to cope with all of the feelings that you have for Dasein 😔
[image ID: Two digital drawings set in the Loremaster’s chamber.  In the first image, a Myth wizard wearing generic Dragonspyre gear smiles and says, “Maybe the REAL TREASURE was the FRIENDS we made along the way!”  “REAL TREASURE” and “FRIENDS” are both underlined.  In the second image, a Life wizard wearing Merciless gear looks serious and says, “No, I want my fucking spell.”  End image ID.]

Was thinking about some of the infrastructure in Dragonspyre, specifically these rooms.
Tumblr media
Many of the larger buildings in Dragonspyre feature lower floors with fountains spewing lava, and large basins the lava is flowing into. It seems like the function of this would be to redirect lava from the upper floors.
However, this shouldn’t have been a concern when building these buildings. Dragonspyre used to be a sunny, habitable place with a climate comparable to Wizard City. So, why are the buildings built with managing lava in mind? The ornate design of the lava fixtures, along with the sheer size of the structures, makes it very unlikely that they were built any time around when the dragon titan caused the cataclysm.
Tumblr media
They were built over a long period of time, and with great attention to style as well as function. But why were these structures built in this way prior to the dragon titan?
My theory as to why these structures are the way that they are is similar to why we have nuclear bunkers in the real world. They have been built in preparation for an armageddon to come. Dragonspyre’s society is militaristic, and it seemed inevitable to many that with the escalation of power, someone would eventually invoke the dragon titan and cause the destruction of the world. As such, many of the wealthy and powerful inhabitants thought that rather than actually working to change the sociopolitical conditions causing the world to inch towards the brink, it would be easier to prepare structures for themselves to brace for impact.
However, the structures didn’t work. There was no way to truly test whether or not these structures would protect those inside, and the sheer amount of destruction the dragon titan wrought was beyond comprehension. The heat generated was completely overwhelming, and the structures built to protect those inside became inescapable death traps instead. As the lava slowly drained towards the bottom, filling the rooms with heat and fumes, there was no way for anyone in the buildings to save themselves. The fire left nothing but the skeletal remains that we see in the upper rooms

Fall of Man; Fall of Me
Twas' an unknown eve;
fiery pits beneath me;
an ember passed by flame;
only hope encompassed my name.
"oh savior! oh one!"
death of me, would be the undone.
love of past, he held aknew.
I knew his pain-- knew it was true.
death is a curse, of which he and i bared.
would I be of him like the day upon such a flame;
the burning lights bring a pain;
dragon embers- oh shout his name!
death of him, it rang true.
blood on my hands, it wasn't new.
but of value it soaked;
like the elder of bartleby's oak.
cheer of ghost gone past- realm of the free!
it'd never last.
byes gone to dragon friend.
memories now found, never end;
fall of a man,
twas' the beginning of my end.
----
I humbly offer this poem inspired by the events of Dragonspyre.

One of the things that brings me sm joy is how even though Cyrus is a jerk a solid 75% of the time, whenever he’s talking about something myth related (Aquila, or the entry quests of Azteca) you can literally HEAR in the voice acting how legit passionate he is about it.
Like yea, the man clearly doesn’t have the temperament for the education field (and needs some serious post Malistaire therapy) but you can’t say he isn’t legitimately passionate about Myth, and it’s so heartwarming to see him happy about something when so much of his storylines are depressing as all hell.
