Lovely Nonvul hasn't been drawn in months, and he deserves to have a chance to shine again!
I feel like I finally have the skill to properly convey his appearance, and I'm so glad to get the chance to do so.
Tumblr media
As for his story, he *is* the adaptation of @99corentine ’s Chrysanthe, *buuuut,* I plan on working on his story separately, to really expand upon it and give him what he deserves. He won't be much of an AU anymore, though, and so I'll be going through and adding ‘oc: Nonvul’ tags to all of my previous arts. I hope this decision is understandable
It's crazy how much he's grown from just... well, Chrysanthe in Dragon Priest robes, heh.

How to begin a rebellion (but your crush is too much committed into a cult)
It was a project I began in April. April. But since I was in school I couldn't be entirely focused on it. Though I'm happy I waited a bit, I progressed a bit in terms of facial expressions.
An idea of mine, from the AU created by @metallic-scaled-scarf , based on the GOL HAH DOV fanfic of @99corentine , where I imagined Miraak and Nonvul having a discussion (or rather, Miraak attempting to make Nonvul join his side very carefully).
Also, a detail I've seen in many medias : when a character is saying something with their eyes hidden but their mouth, it's mostly because they're not telling the truth. On the contrary, when you only see the eyes, it's when they're sincere, weither for good reasons or not. The mouth deceives but the eyes are windows to the soul.
And last but not least : if armor sexy, why that hard to draw.
I'll add a close up right away

So the fact that in @metallic-scaled-scarf dragon priest au Nonvul is actually significantly shorter than Miraak because he's a Chimer is really funny which led to this being created I'm not sorry

Heyo, it's been a while, but I've added onto the Dragon Priest!Chrysanthe AU— where @99corentine 's lovely ldb Chrysanthe is a reincarnated Dragon Priest.
It's back, but, with a twist! This is actually the product of an AU of the AU ( thanks to @tomatotimes ), where Nonvul manages to survive his ( quite gruesome ) injuries because Miraak escapes Apocrypha and saves him ( and Krotumir, too. )
Tumblr media
The lyrics are from the song “Landfill” by Daughter, and it honestly fits their situation so, so well.
Tomato theorized that there would be VERY HIGH tensions between these two Dovahkiin after Nonvul wakes up, since there's their inherent soulmated-ness mixed with the pure hatred Nonvul definitely feels towards Miraak because he betrayed the Dragon Cult.
We spoke at length about it— and it somehow manages to be more angsty than the original AU. Tomato has done a few sketches about this idea, and I have this artwork here, but it sounds like something fun to explore. One would then wonder,.. what happens to Chrysanthe, if Nonvul survives?
I hope you like it as much as I do!

Two weeks of work, hundreds of discarded sketches, 17 backgrounds, and 25 individual figures.
For the Gol Hah Dov 2-Year Anniversary, I went a little more than all-out. Hours were spent storyboarding alone, and I'm so proud of the outcome.
This project has more than 10 individual panels, so I'll have to reblog this post with ANOTHER post, maybe even more.
It is a song lyric-comic style artwork, so the song I chose is Viva La Vida by Coldplay. The lyrics pertaining to the panels will be typed below them.
Well.. let's get into it...

A continuation of my Dragon Priest artworks, we have, well, this!
Tumblr media
This is Nonvul, my favorite Dragon Priest character I have (and, an adaptation/au of @99corentine 's Chrysanthe). After he died, the people he had protected emerged from their hiding place to find his body. The woman shown holding him is Felerid, his closest and only surviving Acolyte. She evacuated and protected a large majority of their city's citizens, but as consequence she wasn't able to fight alongside Nonvul.
Yeesh, sorry about the tag-spam, Corentine! This is the, what, 6th tag from me since you've dipped from Tumblr? Yeaaaaaaahhh sorry bout that—

@99corentine , here is my first attempt at detailed sculpting. Nonvul's mask! With two backgrounds: One textired, one white.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This took ages to make, and I am very happy to present it to you! I can't say the kind of clay it is (for I do not know), but I can say that it survived multiple trips in a kiln with glaze.
Carving and shaping it was quite the challenge and I learned a lot about sculpting! I may try this medium again someday.
The Dovahzul inscribed in the back of the mask says "NONVUL".

More Dragon Priest! Chrysanthe AU for you, I have a full-body portrayal of our Nonvul. I mentioned in a previous post that he had leg markings too, didn't I? Well here they are.
Always, original character concept by @99corentine . Loved the latest GHD chapter, by the way.

Pictures and lore under the <readmore> because there is a bit of skin showing here.

Plus, some delicious close-ups.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alright, I'll provide a name, location, and description of each marking on his lower body. The ones on his upper body can be found here, as well as the lore I've written about these tattoos.
Unslaad Aari (ceaseless/eternal servant [of mine] in Dovahzul, labeled as #8 and #9) sits above Mindoraan on Nonvul's right thigh— since it is a phrase, Unslaad sits winding across the thigh and up the hip with Aari directly under it. This Markings is similar in its service-implications to Gro Zeim Dinok.
Mindoraan (‘understanding’ in Dovahzul, labeled as #1) is located on Nonvul's right leg— starting above his knee, winding around the back, and ending just below his knee. Being within the Priests' ranks implies that the Priest has become Enlightened as a true servant of the Dov.
Grah (battle/struggle in Dovahzul, labeled as #12) is located on Nonvul's lower shin— it is a short word so it doesn't cover very much. This Marking represents the struggles the Dragon Priests underwent during Miraak's rebellion, making Grah the youngest Marking on Nonvul.
Sahvot (faith in Dovahzul, labeled as #10) curves across Nonvul's left thigh— starting halfway down and reads up to the side of his hip. The Dragon Cult was a religion, after all, and faith is typically part of a religion. This was among the oldest of Markings on his body.
Werid (praise/exalt in Dovahzul, labeled as #11) is located underneath Sahvot on Nonvul's thigh— but it curves in the opposite direction up into the other word. This word was carved by Krotumir, who felt that His Priest was grand enough to be praised by other mortals (though obviously not as the Dov are praised) and wished to remind His Priest of this at every moment.
Fahdon (friend/companion in Dovahzul, labeled as #13) is carved on Nonvul's left shin— starting above the ankle and winding up his lower leg until it stops just halfway up. Alongside Werid, Fahdon was also one of the few Markings carved by Krotumir himself, and the reasons are linked to their deep personal (somewhat) connection.

Here we are, another piece added to the Dragon Priest! Chrysanthe AU.
For context, look Here. All based on @99corentine ’s Chrysanthe ofc.
Nonvul's armor is refrenced from Skyrim concept art that can be found in a post Here.
That concept art had an end goal: this! After hours of references and picking out complimentary colors, I present to you a full-body Nonvul.
Tumblr media
In case you couldn't tell, the Dovahzul at the top spells ‘Nonvul.’ My Dovahzul handwriting is improving every day, in my humble opinion.
Shading metal is an internationally-recognized form of torture. Don't look it up trust me on this. I'll have more art touching up on the Mask and weapons eventually, but today is not that day.
Nonvul's armor has three goals: intimidation, flexibility, and protection. The armor is classified as a blend of light and heavy, with elements meant to draw out the benefits of both. The armor stays away from his joints, save the shoulders and knees, and is closer to chainmail in craftsmanship than welded plates. The armor has fire resistance and magic resistance enchantments, as requested by Krotumir.
His inner robes are soft– meant to provide comfort, while the outer layers are coarse and thick– meant to protect from attacks and the weather. Although the weather in his area is far from the extremity of Skyrim's northern coast, Nonvul is still an Elf, and prefers to be as cozy as possible.

Welcome back to the Dragon Priest! Chrysanthe AU! For context, look Here and Here.
The Chrysanthe character is by @99corentine.
Click images to see them in actual high quality.
Slight CW for scar-tattoos, and be advised he shows a lil belly. There is also some Dragon Cult religious jargon near the end.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
One page with a stack of close-ups! Let's get into your daily snack of lore, shall we?
It's obvious that the Dragon Priests’ faces were treasures to their Masters, so of course this applied to their bodies as well. That doesn't mean Dragons kept the skin of their Sonaakke hidden away at all times, though. The Dov commonly practiced the art of ‘Marking’ their own Priests.
The Markings of a Title.
When taking on their new name, a Priest will have the Dovahzul runes carved into their skin with a ritual blade, creating intricate and controlled scar patterns. Should a Priest receive a different title, the skin containing their old one will be burned until the old name is unrecognizable before carving a new one in a different place. Few Priests ever had their names changed, usually those who committed defiant acts against their Dovah Masters.
Nonvul’s name is scratched up his right arm, starting at the elbow and working towards the shoulder (shown in art above).
The Markings of a Patron.
Alongside their own name, a Priest will receive ‘Markings’ of their Patron’s name. This isn't unexpected, the Dov have always been possessive beings and to write on their precious Sonaakke is an opportunity they wouldn't pass up. Of all the ‘Markings’ a Priest may receive, their Patron's name is the only one that is always carved by the Dragon.
In Nonvul’s case, the name is displayed in delicate etchings across his chest– Krotumir was cautious with his Priest while he carved out each rune.
The Markings of a Will.
Oaths, don't we love them? Dragon Priests undoubtedly fell under many Oaths and Vows throughout their lives– many of which, when broken, would get them immediately slaughtered. As a reminder of the importance of the Priesthood and to instill unwavering loyalty, Oaths of various strengths are bestowed upon the minds and bodies of the Sonaakke. The writings usually varied wildly in topic and coiled jealously around a Priest's torso, legs, neck, and arms. Phrases like “Unending Service” were the most common, though every Vow was unique.
Nonvul’s ‘Markings’ in terms of Oaths were far from extensive– he only had two on his torso (shown in art above) but had a few phrases on his legs and pelvis (not shown in art above). From his left shoulder snaking down his arm is the word “THAARN” (Obedience in Dovahzul), the intentions of this inscription is rather clear and have colorful implications for Chrysanthe. Moving onto the other Vow– across his stomach and wrapping partially around his waist– sits the phrase “GRO ZEIM DINOK” (Bound Past Death in Dovahzul). This clearly refrenced the return of Dragon Priests as Liches, but in Nonvul’s case it did not come to pass. The phrase still applies, however, because he was reincarnated with the intention of rejoining the Priesthood.
Importance of the Marks.
The Dragon Priests always were eager to receive their Title– their new Identity– the new definition of themselves for eternity. By taking up this Name they have ascended higher than other mortals, but are still nothing in the face of a Dovah.
Their Patron's name went similarly: They receive the grave honor of inscribing the very essence of their God upon their bodies, ensuring until the end of time that this is their Fate, and taking the implications into their being.
The Sonaakke took their Vows with the utmost reverence, and full rituals to carve individual words or phrases could span upwards of 36 hours. Dedication and loyalty were heavily stressed and the Dovahzul being inscribed was repeated by the Priest throughout the process. The ritual reinforced the ideals held within the Priesthood that this is their glorious unending fate. Service to the dragons is not temporary, as the dragons themselves are not temporary. To swear oneself to the Dov is to bind one's very soul to their Will, to give oneself entirely that one may become More through service.
To be Nothing to serve Everything.

It's time for more of the beloved Dragon Priest! Chrysanthe AU. Featuring a comic that sapped my strength for days on end before it was completed!
You want clues to Nonvul and Miraak's relationship? I am more than happy to oblige! I'm cautious right now about which pieces of the AU to post, but I promise that this slow-down is not because of a lack of content. (It's from a lack of planning.)
Context: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
Inspired by GOL HAH DOV by the talented @99corentine
Enlarge images for higher quality, don't worry I will transcribe the character's words.
Tumblr media
Morokei: “How are we to be truly sure he is no.. Traitor! Like Miraak!”
Hevnoraak: “He is Dovahkiin, they may be working together.”
Krosis: “Watch your tongue, Hevnoraak—!”
Vahlok: “Has he shown you any disloyalty? Treachery? The honorable one? We cannot be fighting over—”
Morokei: “You, you would trust him? You of any other, Vahlok?”
Vahlok: “Yes! ”
————
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Vahlok: “Nonvul's name is proof enough.”
Hevnoraak: “Oh, like Mir-Aak? Allegiance-Guide? He ‘guided’ his followers to blasphemy!”
Vahlok: “Listen and listen well— I tell you Nonvul has committed no crime.”
· The Council dissolves into chaotic argument.. ·
· Later.. ·
Konahrik: “Nonvul, failing to answer their inquiries will drive a rift between our Council's members. We must stand together.”
Nonvul: “I... understand.”
Konahrik: “Nonvul, do you?”
Nonvul: “Of course! ”
Konahrik: “That's good. Now, you prepare to join Morokei in burning any records concerning Miraak. He must not be remembered. Understood?”
Nonvul: “. . .”

· A flashback.. ·

A few notes before your lore:
This page, if you'll take notice of the dates, was drawn far before my most recent posts. (i say far but they're all within days of one another) Why? Because I never got around to posting it and ideas were coming too fast to take a break.
This was the first concept art for Krotumir, and this page was supposed to be dedicated to him. It technically is, but more to his speech and a word wall than anything else.
I'm aware the word wall doesn't have an on-page translation, you'll get one.
Lore under the cut, I feel like being nice to the poor sods who find my posts on their dashboard.
Let's do this one piece at a time, shall we?
The Word Wall.
Shown above, this word wall didn't exist until after the Dragon War. No great feat had even been accomplished in Sedinbildrun deserving of a wall, no great hero had made his legacy. While a large and beautiful city, Sedinbildrun wasn't well-known to those who lived outside of that area.
The word wall says:
“Daar vahrukiv fin fahliil Sonaak wo krif erei dinok wah spaan fin Bron do Sedinbildrun wah vul lo.”
Which translates to:
“This commemorates the Elf Priest who fought until death to shield the Nord[s][Atmorans] of Sedinbildrun from hopeless deception.”
*quick note before you notice the discrepancy: yes I made a mistake with translating. I get vocabulary words wrong sometimes, happens to everyone. The 'gran' shown in the picture above was supposed to be 'krif' as shown in the translation above. I apologize for this mistake.
Nonvul and Krotumir were praised even after their death for how they gave everything to fight and protect the city from invaders. Because of their sacrifice, Nonvul's in particular, the people of Sedinbildrun crafted a beautiful word wall with carvings telling the story. Statues were erected, one of Nonvul and another of Krotumir, then mounted on(Krotumir) or near(Nonvul) the wall.
The Phrases.
From his curiosity about mortals to his borderline-delicacy with his priests, Krotumir was far from the ruthlessness generally expected of the Dov. His interest in mortals and mortality in particular was confounding to the other Dovahhe, but being a Serpentine dragon he was used to their judgement. When observing or speaking to his priests or acolytes, Krotumir curled around them as if they were his treasures.
Perhaps they were.
If Nonvul were to make mistakes– large like misplacing a sacrifice or small like misspeaking during a sermon– Krotumir would look into why the mistake is made, seeking to stop it from happening again rather than attempting to beat it out of his Sonaakke.
The phrases above in the concept art portray some draconic ways of comfort that Krotumir provided.
The first is..
“Fen ni krosis do dii Sonaak.”
which translates to..
“[I] will not [make] sorrow of my Priest.”
And the second is..
“Fen neh beyn Sonaaki fah joorahiil.”
which translates to..
“[I] will never fault [my] Priest for [his] mortality.”
Final Notes.
Keep in mind that spoken Dovahzul cuts out pronouns and 'unnecessary words.'
Also, I spliced 'joorahiil' together because there's no word for mortality.

Welcome back to the Dragon Priest! Chrysanthe AU. Today we're featuring another drawing of Nonvul, because why not. I've probably drawn him at least 15 times now, not counting the comics.. heh... this AU has me in a chokehold.
