I don't know, there's just something that hits so hard knowing that at his very core, Wanderer is just a sweet boy who wants to help others and find a family who will love and take care of him in return. We can see this when he's first found after Ei left him, and also when he erases himself from Irminsul.
Wanderer, when we meet him as Scaramouche is someone tainted by centuries of deceit. He's the product of a twisted mind twisting the naive mind of a puppet just looking for his place in this world. His personality as Scaramouche is fragments of those he's spent the most time with (the harbingers), coupled with his three perceived betrayals, and we end up with a homicidal puppet who hates humanity and detests the gods. He may have hated them, but the Harbingers (especially Dottore) are the ones who shaped the Balladeer we met.
But the Wanderer we meet post-Irminsul is helping out at a fruit stand in Sumeru fully expecting no compensation for his work. He goes out of his way to pick fresh sunsettias and take care of this stand all because the man who runs it helped him. He's shocked and confused, not angry, when the Traveler says that he's a puppet despite him making it a point to never tell anyone. He happily accompanies the Traveler and Paimon to Nahida, even apologizing for the inconvenience.
Dottore made sure all of Wanderer's naive traits turned bitter towards the world because he wanted a fascinating test subject. And yet, even when he could go on the warpath and murder Dottore after finding out the core betrayal that shaped him was a lie, he instead chooses to erase himself from the past just as a small chance to fix the wrongs he's done and give those hurt because of him a chance at a better life.
If the Kabukimono and Wanderer were him without being molded by the harsh world and Scaramouche was the result of being manipulated, I really wonder how he would have turned out had Ei not chosen to give him up.
In other words: Scaramouche is baby and he deserved so much better. Wanderer is a sweetheart who had to reconcile with a past that went completely against who he thought he was and deserved better. But the Wanderer we have now, is healing.
He's healing and I can't explain how proud of him I am that he's trying.

Dream a Little Dream of Me - XLV
Tumblr media
Celestia had a cruel sense of humor. He knew this, even before his days as a student. But to be given a soulmate? Now, when he openly blasphemed against the cursed island in the sky? He would outlive you and the dreadful fated bond that haunted your shared dreams. There was little point in this. He could at least put a Vision to good use. People were nothing but disappointments. He had no use for you. Until you pulled the bow across your instrument and awoke a part of him long buried by self-hatred and arrogance. Soulmate AU; Il Dottore/Female reader w/ established personality and backstory. Slow burn. Lore and world speculation and interpretation within; follows canon story where possible. Rated Mature. Rating subject to change. Mind the tags. On AO3 here.
Upon returning to the Palace, Zandik left almost immediately for the depths of Haeresys with little explanation.  When you pressed for more details, considering the morning's journey, he brushed stray snow off the fur lining of your cloak's hood and gave you an enigmatic smirk as you waited for the elevator.
The earring he wore, a perfectly clear glowing crystal, fell against his jaw as he titled his head.  It shifted light differently than the previous one.  The vial and dull liquid were now floating somewhere far away from the Palace, beaten eternally by the tide.
"I'll admit only that this is hardly work and more of a…personal project.  You'll see soon enough."
You weren't going to get more details out of him, not here, where so many could overhear.  The only sanctuary you had were your private rooms and such spaces provided little comfort despite their amenities.  That, too, would change, according to Zandik; on the ride back, he mentioned a designer would be by within a week to discuss your ideas.
He made a point to emphasize not to worry about figures and costs; as if that would stop you from thinking about it nonetheless when you were used to making mora last.
Left to your own devices, you returned not to your quarters but to the music room, determined to put the new rhythms and notes in your head somewhere.  The wind up north was different and even the shifting and clinking of the ice had a unique element you wished to capture while the idea was fresh.
What did he have that he wanted to be a surprise, you wondered.  The entire morning had been rather solemn and on more than one occasion, you had a difficult time capturing his attention.  Anyone else might have been hurt by such a demonstration.  Returning to a single mind was hardly easy, you imagined, when he was previously so used to sharing thoughts and ideas as one shared water.  Gaining your footing again in reality was the closest experience you had.
He had only just said goodbye, after all.
You lost yourself in the ink and the keys, rubbing an index finger and thumb together idly as you looked back on your notations and hummed to yourself.  Your callouses were softening and your tendons were adjusting to a different position now that you were adjusted to the piano.  The aches were different.  Some days it felt as if you woke with hands that weren't yours.
While not the same, you were likely one of the few who understood that normality was not instantaneous.  Nor possible when equilibrium had yet to be reached.
He returned sometime later when you were finishing up a section, slipping into the room with a smile that warmed you better than any fireplace or radiator in the entire Palace.  Boyish, exuberant, sharp and full.  A wild contrast from his earlier solemnity but his excitement rolled off him in waves as he checked for potential interlopers.
Zandik unclipped his mask and placed it on the closed lid of the piano.  Crimson eyes danced with a light you vaguely recalled.  Dreams never quite captured it, however, and you were certain your memories held nothing similar.  Zandik was in his flow, eager and thrilled.  It was infectious and you found yourself closing the lid on the piano and adjusting the hand-embroidered cover with little prompting.
Deft hands made quick work of your own face covering and led you away from the piano, towards the other end of the room with space to dance.
"The doors are locked.  Close your eyes, rooh 'albi."
"What are you—"
Zandik's nose brushed against yours as he leaned in close.  He held your hands in his, palms up and open.  He coaxed you with your name, the syllables rolling off his tongue emphatically.  You closed your eyes and resisted the urge to turn your head and look up as a jolt ran through every fiber of your being.
The distance never closed and instead you felt something drop into your open hands as lips ghosted over yours.  His warmth retreated and you opened your eyes to find a conductor's baton in your hands.
Despite its size, it was rather ornate.  Familiar polished wood, well-balanced, its handle following a flowing motion that felt more comfortable than it looked.  The base gave way to a small device with a glowing light that, when waved, bathed the entire baton in a golden glow.  Examining it closer, you recognized the carvings in the handle, the lines and texture unmistakable.
“This is…”
“Yes.  Summon your weapon and I’ll explain.  Some testing may still be required but presumably, as both are yours, the connection should work with little trouble.”
Confused, you reached into the void and summoned your claymore, careful of the nearby furniture.
“Your profession results in the wearing down of muscles and tendons that are also crucial for everyday use.  Despite pushing through many of the tests and demonstrations I asked of you in Sumeru, it was unmistakable that holding such a heavy weapon exacerbates both the pain and the damage done.  As few humans take well to having certain augmentations, the alternative is to bridge the gap; ease the burden while still allowing for the same result.”
Zandik held out a hand and he took your claymore, maneuvering it adeptly with a single hand.  He pulled a device from his pocket, like the one on the end of the baton.  Red eyes scanned the pommel and crossed hilt until they found an ideal spot and placed the device; it soldered itself to the handle with a brief hiss and tuft of smoke and the light pulsed twice before glowing steadily.
He laid the sword down on the hand-woven carpeting and came to stand behind you.  His chest pressed against your back as he nudged your feet apart slightly.  You hoped he missed the thrum of your pulse as his hand adjusted your arm and wrist.  Poised, baton glowing, Zandik flicked your wrist up and then stepped back when you brought it down to indicate the first beat.
Instinct took care of the rest.
It was weighty at first, like trying to leverage a boulder with a stick.  Any movement from your wrist or hand would consequently move the claymore through the air, the weapon enveloped in a golden hue much like the baton.  Every time you wielded the blade since that moment at the foot of a Ruin Golem, you relied on a rhythm; it was predictable, Zandik said, a problem in actual combat with another, but useful when learning and understanding the act of swinging such a heavy weapon.
Without the actual weight in your hands, movement might be quicker, more adaptable.  After all, Zandik controlled his weapon without the aid of such a device.
“Perhaps not the best environment,” you teased, moving a bit too far and narrowly missing an armchair.  “I’d rather not break a window.”
Especially if it meant dealing with Pantalone.  But you kept that thought to yourself.
Zandik chuckled, his hands still behind his back.  “Ideally, the baton follows the same convention as your claymore.  It can be dismissed and summoned at will.  Try it.”
You imagined your hand and the space your claymore occupied as empty, pushing them away as if you were packing a trunk.  In a flash of stardust, both vanished; you had only to think and the baton came back.  Only the baton?  Frowning, you raised it as if you were awaiting musicians to ready themselves and then gestured with a downstroke.  The claymore appeared and sliced through the air, ever obedient.
"How long did you work on this, Zandik?" you asked, turning to look up at him through your lashes.  "When did you work on this?"
How you'd missed your old friend.  The grain was the same.  Zandik did everything he could to preserve the core of the cello head while repurposing it.
He pulled his shoulders back and his smile softened before he spoke again.  This Zandik, your Zandik, was buried in the shadow of himself for so long.  You only ever caught glimpses of him, ghosts of what he wanted to show you.  Something tugged deep inside you as you recalled frozen petals and moments such as this that you knew existed but were lost to a fog.
"The benefit to my…previous methodology was being able to delegate.  With Omega handling the artificial god and the Akademiya, I was free to work on other ideas.  This was simple, especially after enough observation of your combat style.  Time was not advantageous until now.  Your next surprise was far more complex."
Your brow furled in confusion and before you could get another word out, you caught sight of a glistening item behind Zandik, near the piano in a resting stand.  You were glad to have dismissed the baton, for you might have dropped it as you realized what the crystalline object was.
The glass panes were so clear, so refined, that part of you wondered whether it was glass at all.  Soft curls and filigree were etched into the surface, so subtle they were only noticeable when light hit just so, refracting in such a way that it appeared to glow from within.  Your fingers itched to brush against the metal strings, feel the weight of a bow in your hand again, and you drew in a shaky breath.
Glancing back up at Zandik, his enthusiasm tempered but nonetheless proud of himself, you found him watching you to gauge your reaction.
"The acoustics should sound exact, if a little muted because of the Cryo panels.  A microphone took care of that easily enough," he explained. "But you have the better ear for such things."
Your eyes burned and you couldn't help but let out a small laugh in response.  Words weren't enough to convey the overabundance of sheer joy running through you.  Not glass but Cryo, then, and likely all the stronger for it.
"You made this, mon rêve?" you asked, seeking nothing more than confirmation.
He was more than capable of doing such a thing, you well knew; you were not shocked by that, but rather by its craftsmanship.
"Of course.  Purchasing you a new one would have been easy enough—a few of my colleagues certainly thought that the more reasonable option—but I am never one to turn down a chance to innovate, rooh 'albi."
Your arms wrapped around his neck without a second thought as you closed the gap between you.  Zandik stiffened and inhaled sharply as your fingers settled into his hair, gently playing with the locks as you pressed your lips to his.  It felt as if you were breathing fresh air as you nestled yourself against him and he finally relaxed his shoulders, leaning into you.  Your fingers tingled and, in your fervor, you brushed your tongue against Zandik's, deepening the kiss to channel every bit of excess emotion you couldn't otherwise express.
A hand cradled your face but never pulled you away; instead, it skimmed your jaw and neck to hold the back of your head, keeping you there.
Every previous kiss, few though they were, felt like nothing more than a fleeting touch in comparison.  Breathless, you pulled away slightly, admiring your own handiwork as every knot in your body undid itself.  If being apart was akin to losing a limb, then you could only imagine what came with any kind of union.
Thoughts for far, far later, you reminded yourself.  There was time.  There was always time.
"What does that mean?  Rooh 'albi?" you whispered.
"Soul of my heart, roughly," Zandik replied, voice hoarse as he pressed his forehead to yours. "Few things and people in this world have made my very being feel as if it is on fire and drenched with the coolest waters all at once.  It seemed fitting."
With a final kiss, this one softer and filled with an unspoken promise, you hesitantly parted.  Zandik's ears were pink, slowly turning back to their usual color.
"Indulge me?" Zandik asked as he revealed his other hand, presenting you with a bow as clear and dazzling as the instrument itself.
As if he even had to ask.
The neck was cool beneath your touch but not uncomfortably so.  After adjusting the tuning and playing a few scales to warm your muscles, you began a familiar, sweeping melody.  Hesitant curiosity, the expansion and elongation of time, mechanical lifeforms battling against the divine.  Memorized notes gave way to freeform composition, the deepest waters now explored and mapped.  Vibrations ran through your very bones and although they felt different compared to the way the wood absorbed them, the notes seemed to glide through the air instead.
The final sound, once a minor key, shifted on a whim to its major variant. Singular applause, slow and marveled, echoed through the room, and in that moment, you swore nothing you played before was as sweet and soul-shaking.

RAHHHHHH!!! okay okay okay... so dottore definately makes a shit ton of things as little gifts for scaramouche. but will not tell him that they are gifts and just act like eiter its something scaramouche just needd, or that it was something he made on a whim and doesnt need/want anymore. they both know he made it especially as a gift. the only time it is too obvious for him to even try to lie about is when its like... the shouki no kami. and so he doesnt even try to hide that its a gift and just rambles about his gift being such an amazing scientific breakthrough as scaramouche is just forced to listen to all of it before he can get ready to try it out.

lyney's character story about his vision revealing arlecchino didn't allow him to use a delusion and was genuinely angry that he would do something lynette wouldn't want for him, encouraging him to find other solutions... the way she was also sad lyney didn't feel comfortable relying on her during the quest... she really cares about the kids. her smile while speaking to furina also looked sincere. even though one can debate if this is all an act to make them trust and be loyal to her (as said by her, "good actors hone their craft to mesmerise the whole crowd") or acknowledge the fact she's using the kids by making them part of the fatui, she genuinely seems to cherish them. at least she goes through lengths that aren't really necessary for her not to care. the way she reformed the orphanage, the way she helped freminet get closure on his mother's fate... i just think it goes to show and confirm once more how biased everything/everyone in the game is. sometimes bordering unreliable, really. scara and childe's lines about her paint her in a certain light, which i'm not saying isn't true quite the opposite, but that persona seems to coexists with the version the kids from the house of the hearth know.

I feel like people who complain about Scaramouche "being redeemed" in 3.3 as in "not held accountable" are really like... missing the point?
So you have this creation with one foot in humanity and another in divinity, whose entire existence has been defined from the very beginning by not being enough to truly be either human or god. Who was led to believe that the sheer intensity of his emotions where the cause for being abandoned by his creator and mother. Every single time he finds a semblance of peace and belonging, it's violently taken from him.
Humans can't be trusted. Human emotion is the greatest flaw. Everyone will abandon and betray you sooner or later.
Only for it to be revealed that the entirety of this situation had been carefully plotted in advance by (from what we currently know) Pierro and Dottore, all to specifically set the gears in motion for the naive puppet to spend centuries believing that the loved ones they took from him betrayed him. Completely unaware of the fact that they were eliminated specifically to trap him in the Fatui, so that they could get access to the secrets regarding the Electro Archon's creation methods.
He only became who he was within the Fatui due to being at Dottore's mercy, and for being able to "withstand abuse better than most humans". And now it's also confirmed that this is what made it possible for Dottore to create his many segments in the fist place.
But despite all that, this is a person who sees the divinity that which is the puppet's birthright. The sole purpose of his existence. And this same person promises to unlock that power, and help him scrub away the human emotion that ails him in order to elevate him to true divinity. Infiltrating and conspiring with the leading figures of Sumeru's Akademiya for it. Even when recognizing that this is all for Dottore's goals and nothing else, Scara still accepts it.
... only for everything to collapse and burn on itself, after having a taste of the power that he was taught to covet so. And now he's in the hands of the people who tried to get in the way multiple times before, who finally emerged victorious for it. And for what purpose could he yet be kept alive if not for the potential ways they could use him?
He complies to the tasks they ask him to fulfill, including searching the Irminsul. Only to then learn that everything he thought he knew about his life, his circumstances, his pain... all of it was planned by the Jester and the Doctor before he even knew them. And the people they claimed betrayed Scara had actually defended him and his heart to their literal dying breaths. Even as Dottore revealed his identity and the truth of what went down at Tatarasuna, Niwa's concern for Scara's safety even as he bled to death.
Scara asking the Traveler if there is any chance of changing the past, this wasn't him selfishly trying to erase the errors of his past. This was an attempt at self destruction in the hopes that there was even the smallest chance of changing the outcome of what happened back then. To try and change the timeline, so that Niwa, Katsuragi and everyone who died by assocation of knowing him wouldn't have died that day. Even at the cost of deleting his own existence.
This obviously didn't work out, for there is no way to change fate, and the only thing you change by altering Irminsul is the memory around how things came to pass, not if. And so Niwa, Katsuragi and the others all still died horrible deaths... there's just no puppet to be remembered now.
And then, without his memories, Scara becomes more mellow, and lost. And when faced with the information that he's committed atrocities in the past he accepts this as truth. And this is before the strangers (as the Traveler and Paimon are to him at the time) have any sort of proof to back this claim up with.
Despite that, he asks to bear witness to his past sins. Even when it's hard for him, he never looks away from it, and by the end of it he asks for his memories to be restored even though it will bring back the centuries of pain that lead him to that point. And he's willing to bear the burden, begs for it even.
He asks Kusanali what it means to be human, and if a puppet can truly be human. This is pivotal, as Scara's entire life has been dictated by the shackles of his past, by the things he lack. For the first time ever, he senses a potential way forward, towards a more hopeful future.
And the fact that he gains his vision the exact precise moment he reconciles with his past self, and lets it take a backseat as a part of what's shaped him rather than what forever defines him, is the freedom that which Anemo symbolizes.
I don't think it's talked about enough that his mindset is so reliant on the concept of "eternity", even when acknowledging that he's Ei's creation. She made him and the Shogun as a result of her pursuing unperturbed eternity after the Cataclysm, seeing that even her vessel was not ideal for it (erosion, etc). Scara was ultimately created for that purpose, but even still he is so similar to Ei herself... Both feel everything so intensely they scarcely know how to bear it.
And seeing her own artificial creation shed tears upon receiving the gnosis, I think the "weakness" Ei could be argued to have seen was much more towards herself, rather than Scara (and who knows if his initial softness also bore a potential resemblance to Makoto.)
And so she thought she was doing the only right thing, by giving him her blessing and a chance to shape his own fate free from her influence, rather than destroying him as a "failed prototype". But inevitably, he saw this as abandonment and helped fuel the idea that his sole worth lied in being able to carry the gnosis.
Going back to Scara's vision, the moment he received it also meant that he had finally found the freedom that Ei had wished for him. Something he had only briefly known once in Tatarasuna, as the now forgotten Kabukimono.
Even though he is forgotten in the words of history, and in the memory of the world, he still asks us to tell the descendants of the Raiden Gokaden who had really brought them ruin. Even welcoming the prospect of them wanting to kill him in retribution, seeing it as only fair.
He has no plans as of now, and isn't that the first time in far too long too?
He is finally free from the prison of the past, where he saw no other way than to harm people, and is now free to atone and find himself again. He may forever be shaped by his past, but that does not mean he is incapable of making a difference for the better. Because as he learned the hard way, there is no changing the past.
I'm not sure what other way this part of the story could have been concluded, and I wouldn't have had it any other way because it's all so goddamn poetic and heart wrenching in the best of ways. Even as fate saw for all this hurt and harm to happen, there was still a chance for him to atone and improve, for himself and others.
And the trials of realizing that, and work towards doing better without expecting forgiveness or sympathy from those you hurt, is much more productive when trying to make things better. Why does one feel the need for further punishment after everything the story has told us so far? To me that's missing the point entirely about what makes Scara and characters like him so impactful.
Because nothing about this story has been inherently "redeeming", but if you work under the idea that "punishment and atonement" needs to be carried out and that even then it will never be enough to cleanse you from your past sins, what point is there to try and ever do better? This is why "redemption arcs" is such a useless topic to me and dare I say closemindedly christian

Genshin Scenarios
Well hello again tumblr~ I haven't updated in quite a while, sorry about that. My writing mostly happens when I have the motivation or when I have a big amount of time on my hands. I do love it though so I'll always come back to it! Anyways enough about me, you came here for a story so it's up to me to deliver!
~The scenario this time is none other than...what if you were Dottore's child? I finished the Sumeru archon quest recently and oh boy does Dottore make my blood boil, but his character is just written so good I couldn't resist the idea~enjoy!
II Dottore and his unexpected experiment turned weakness.Feelings can be tortuous can’t they? Pt.1
What if you were Dottore’s child? Crazy I know or is it?
Obviously you wouldn’t be some normal run of the mill kid, but this isn’t a Frankenstein story either your birthing is…unique
So it all came down to a rebellious stage from Dottores segments or at least one of them. They took some of his DNA and while they were out in Teyvat they found what they were looking for, the abyss.
They left Dottores dna with the abyss and with that the abyss herald two months later handed you to Dottores segment and he returned to Zapolyarny palace.
Dottore was…not in a particularly good mood that day, he threatened to eliminate his segment if they didn’t “for Tsaritsas sake tell me what you did?!”
The segments apparently weren’t phased at all and all they told him was that you were human and you were his, not his segments, not anyone's but his.
Dottore didn’t see any usefulness in you and he clearly didn’t want you, but when he had ordered his segments to get you away from him and to someone who would take you( he hadn’t been completely heartless when he was sure you were his) the segments ran into the other harbingers.
Oh and what a mess this was now. They had run into Columbina, Tartaglia, and Arlecchino.
The three harbingers seeing the baby were shocked, even Arlechinno who was usually cold, expressionless, and collected was stunned.
However they came to a very different conclusion to why Dottores segments had you. They were convinced Dottore had been planning to experiment on you.
Dottore who had been planning to keep you a secret no longer had the choice when they forced him before Pierro and the Tsaritsa herself and what a messy meeting that was.
The segments hadn’t had any reservations in telling them what they’d done, however they left out the abyss and claimed “mysterious circumstances.”
And with that the Tsaritsa declared that you would be raised here in Zapolyarny palace and that the segments would teach you with help from Columbina and Tartaglia.
Arlechinno had tried to take you into her orphanage and Dottore would have accepted if his clones hadn’t fervently disagreed and outright thrown a tantrum about how “she’ll ruin a perfectly good little specimen!”
So with that your care taking was primarily given to Columbina and Tartaglia. Columbina was mostly stationed in snezhnaya and as number three the Tsaritsa and Dottores clones trusted her to watch over you.
Tartaglia on the other hand had been in the abyss and would be able to help you understand everything that came with coming from the abyss, such as time going quicker but never truly aging. Or at least aging slowly.
As a big brother he took to the role of teaching you and caring for you quicker than anyone even himself would have thought.
Later on you would become attached to a certain harbinger someone who you would relate to greatly what with being in the abyss and being considered an “experiment” but that’s another story.
You didn’t know that Dottore was technically your father and you’d never questioned at least out loud who your parents were if anything you just considered Tartaglia your parental figure as your “big brother.”
Dottores segments had taught you as well in your childhood though rarely. Things finally got interesting with their specimen though when you had shown a large interest in inventing.
You however weren’t a scholar and didn’t have an interest in going to “some huge fancy school for pompous fools.” You were interested in learning but only in what interested you and on your terms on your time.
You are extremely smart, just because you take learning in different ways than what would be expected of you doesn’t make you dumb at all, after all everyone’s learning habits are different and can’t be considered the same.
Even though you came about by mysterious abyss circumstances you looked extremely similar to Dottore obviously because of his dna. You never questioned it although you noticed.
Your hair was different shades of blue though the most noticeable were the dark streaks of midnight blue that seemed to swirl in and out like stars.
Your eyes were a deeper red than Dottores, though a dark wine red that when you were angry turned almost black illuminating the bright red star pupils you had…the sign of the abyss or better known as Khanri'ah
You had a deep interest in inventing with the skill and genius to back it up. Even with Ajax’s urging to focus more on fighting which you also loved you were more curious in all the chaotic and destructive devices you could invent.
After all, how else are you going to become a harbinger…oh yeah probably should’ve mentioned you were of course interested in the currently open 8th seat.
So of course you begged Pierro and Ajax to let you go to Dottores lab to beg him to teach you...this will be interesting.
Alright that’s the end of pt.1 courtesy of tumblr’s word limit. I will be making a pt.2 of course, after all the most interesting parts haven’t even begun ;) ~ Lightning 24680~ see you soon!
