OKAY. I have a Taylor Swift theory. I don’t know if it’s been said before, but here it is. We all know dorothea is sung from the perspective of someone who formerly was in a relationship with Dorothea. And most of us know that tis’ the damn season is narrated by Dorothea herself. But my theory is that cowboy like me is narrated by an older Dorothea, after the former lover of Dorothea also becomes relatively famous. Here’s why. In dorothea, the narrator describes Dorothea as having “stars in her eyes.” In cowboy like me, the narrator says “eyes full of stars”. When Dorothea left her small town and tried to become famous, she was “hustling for the good life”. Dorothea’s old lover kept on suggesting that Dorothea come back to their side, but my theory is that they eventually also tried to become famous just so they could see her again. This way, it would make sense for Dorothea to say “hustling for the good life, never thought I’d meet you here”. And the all-around lyrics would make sense if we assumed that Dorothea had had her heart broken ever since she became(sort of)famous(she was still telling the rich folks anything they wanna hear). Which is why, even though she had feelings for the narrator in Dorothea, she didn’t want to get back together with them. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME

for me it's the way taylor swift lets us know she took her lover to her (home)town AND that although it was a wasteland, she experienced love in it:
My town was a wasteland: full of cages, full of fences, pageant queens and big pretenders, but for some, it was paradise
'Cause they got the cages, they got the boxes, and guns; they are the hunters, we are the foxes, and we run
And you know that I'd swing with you for the fences
Hey Dorothea, do you ever stop and think about me? When it was calmer, skipping the prom just to piss off your mom and her pageant schemes
