Meet Zarya!

Content Warnings: dogs, climate grief, COVID mismanagements

Was on the fence about taking in another animal due to climate catastrophe and COVID travel restrictions, then pondered about adopting a heeler.

Originally was going to adopt a red heeler named Lady thirteen years ago. At the time Vancouver transit only allowed dogs which could fit into crates under seats. (Rule now has changed so the crate must sit on the person's lap, sadly!) Revisited the abandoned plan (from 6 - 7 years ago) of thru-hiking the Great Divide Trail (and Norge på Langs!). Maybe a bit of packrafting [video] and bikepacking [video]. Then decided having a partner for the GDT would be awesome. A friend offered a Norrbottenspets pup, but then someone close to me, who is a Golden Retriever aficionado, said something one night. Paused.

Asked a few friends of a mutual about waiting lists for working-line Golden Retrievers. Their dogs tend to have a lighter frame. A month or two later, found a year-old blue heeler named Bit in need of a new home. Friendly with horses and cats. Perfect. Waited for permission from bestie.

Found out a lot of working dogs are not built for putting on mileage. Meandered around on trying to find distance-bred strains: kelpies, Alaskan sled-dogs, racing Siberian sled-dogs, hunting laikas etc. One of my favourite scene [video] from Happy People: A Year in the Taiga, where Anatoly's dog ran alongside the snowmobile for 150 kilometres. Fell down a YouTube rabbit-hole [video].

Missed my old pal Pavel, the West Siberian Laika, terribly. Even though Pavel was fiercely independent and would never be a trainer's dog, he always knew what to do in every situation and could be trusted to make his own choices. That dog had rock-solid judgement calls. He taught me a lot about building trust and developing deep mutual friendship. But then the same friend who offered the Norrbottenspets found a WSL litter! Now there is a new pup named Zarya. Her name was previously Bella. Check out Zarya's Tumblr! She is also present on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube!

Booties and Mileages

In the thru-hiking communities, there is a general formula how often shoes need to be replaced (every 300 - 500 mi or 500 - 800 km) and mailed in advance to supply drops. Is there a similar rule of thumb or mathematical formula for dog booties? Thanks. Preparing for the Great Divide Trail thru-hike which is 1 130 km (700 mi) long. There's about 6 resupply points with the longest stretch being two weeks or 300 km inbetween. Can always mail the surplus back home.

I redid my desktop theme for my DID blog :-) all the info on it is both completely inaccessible on mobile and unfinished on desktop but I like how it looks.

Recently I was asked by my friend Ella if each person in my house separated so my dad, mom, brothers and I all went separate ways how would we divide up the dogs and are there dogs that it is harder to pinpoint who their chosen person is? I thought it was a fun question so I am going to answer it...just the way I see it of course ...

First of all my dad would have Stella, the French bulldog hands down. Dad is stella's person

Mom would definitely take Ava, the female golden retriever...her and I might fight over our doberman Captain but I feel like I would win that custody battle 😋

My oldest brother Theo would take Zues that one is easy

Liam would get River the male golden retriever. River has taken to Liam as his main person [probably because they are both big goof balls and derps but don't tell Liam I said that].

Then I would definitely get Jewel the beagle basset hound mix and like I said after some battling for custody i think I would win Captain our doberman too (given I'd also take my hedgehog Oliver but we are just talking the dog pack here).

So that just leaves our 2 English Bulldogs Hank and Rosie. I think they are the only 2 that there aren't really any lines to speak of to dictate who their human is they are both so fun and loving and spunky and really don't play obvious favorites among the human family and oh my gosh talk about an all out war custody battle breaking out. I could see it happening over Hank and Rosie they are so loveable and funny and sweet and smart and athletic and energetic and loyal oh my goodness yeah...so now you know even though noone here on tumblr was asking

The Lost Bay update

Hey folks, sorry I've been away for a while, I've been busy working on The Lost Bay - First Look., and I’ve just dropped the latest update!

I think we’ve reached a milestone here!

What’s new?

1.An Area generation/exploration procedure for the Sleep Country district. You can generate 10 000 000+ different areas with just a few dice rolls!

In the last few weeks I chatted with members of the community asking how they’d want the exploration tables to be designed. Here's the feedback that I got.

Half of the folks said they’d want more lore injected in the tables, to get a better sense of the game world.

The other half asked for modular tables that allowed for maximum replayability.

With this update I think I’ve reached a nice compromise, not going too much into details here, but basically I’ve split where + who + what into separate tables. The procedure is highly reusable, and the what table entries have strong moods that help define the setting. And, you asked for it, the tables are written taking into consideration solo play.

2.A beautiful map designed by Strega Wolf van den Berg, it’s so exciting to see a physical representation of the Bay!

3.Two non-human NPCs: the Dogpack and the Spider Nest. I had fun designing those two, particularly their Moves. Moves are a simple way to give personality to the NPCs you create, and to make combat a surprising and fun experience.

4.I’ve modified combat rules and a few other mechanics, the game engine is more consistent, quicker, simpler. Small tweaks that have great effects. If you are planning to play the game I’d recommend downloading the latest version. You might not notice all the revisions, but trust me, they’ll make the gameplay experience better.

What’s coming up next?

Not 100% sure in what order, but here are the things I’m working on:

A couple more Vibes (playable character classes)

A new Reborn Vibe (post-mortem playable character class)

More NPCs

Exploration tables for the Mall Nation district

Errands prompts (solo and group adventure prompts)

Solo support (oracle, and complications table)

Better online character keeper/sheets

And the Creator Kit

Creator Kit and Third party publisher license

As I’ve mentioned a few times already, the development of the game has been influenced so much by the feedback of the community. And I know that several of you have plans about making supplements/adventures for TLB. The Creator Kit, which will probably drop with the next update, is intended to support the community and the creation of 3RD party modules. It’s a series of guidelines and toolkits to facilitate adventure design, like: take off checklist, tips, designer commentary, and modules you can use to build the next kick ass TLB thing.

Along with the release of the Creator Kit will come the Third Party Publisher license, I’ll reveal more about it in the next update.

While in Kauai last week, we adopted a dog for a day from the Kauai Humane Society named KIKI ❤️They have this super cool program that allows ppl to take a dog out for the day to help socialize and get them outside of the kennels. You get a little dogpack with water, treats, blanket, and toys! We got Kiki and she was so great! Super sweet dog and wonderful for all types of owners. She is still available at Kauai Humane and can even be flown to an adopter in the mainland! I wish my cats could handle a dog but poor jaspy would probably have a heart attack.
