And the finished product! Overall I am pretty happy with how it turned out from the matte black colour to the actual piecing together of the kit. If you want to build one of your own headover to @kookaburramusictree . Once again, a big shout out to fellow band mate @dishevelledoccultist. This is also a good opportunity to mention our band "Malware" that will be performing at this year's Ghpul-Stock. Stay tuned for more information on that! #diyguitar #guitar #guitarproject #explorer #explorerguitar #newband #malware #creative #ghoul #ghoulshadows #ghoulstock #talesofthetwisted #creative #music #moretocome #watchthisspace #halloween #brisbane #australia #vampirecourtofbrisbane #houseofshadows #healthylifestyle #healthyliving #progress #progressshot #matte #matteblack https://www.instagram.com/p/Cn_ckEOyC-c/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Assembled and tested ... all systems go!!! 🎉 🎊 🎈👏 Setup is going to need some tinkering, and still needs a string tree (hardware was missing for that) but: we have successfully breathed life into the beast. Best part is: she’s already agreed to let me play it at an upcoming show!! 😀😀 #diyguitar #diytele #telelikeobject #purpleguitar #mattepurple #starwars #deathstar #millenniumfalcon #spacescene #metallicpurple #electricpurple https://www.instagram.com/p/CA33MzDBYyC/?igshid=14v6kw6duydfy

i diy repair my guitar
I did this a year ago back when I was in college. My main strat had deep worn frets, it played fine but every time I hit the high e and b strings, whether open or anywhere on the neck, it produces a bright ear piercing sound (like a sitar but annoying) unless I play very very soft. Definitely not going to play that way cuz first of all, it’s a strat, it has steel strings not nylon and last, no one’s going to strum very very soft, totes not the solution for me so fret level and crown we go.
Can’t do any repair without tools! here's what I used:
A triangle file
A leveling beam (any straight metal that’s a bit longer than your guitar neck) with a double sided tape attached at the bottom so I can attach sandpaper
Angle Grinder (borrowed)
A straight edge that I cut to make a notched straight edge
Allen Wrench to get the neck straight
Masking Tape
Double Sided Tape
Permanent Marker
240 Grit Sandpaper
Paint Brush
Clean Rags
These tools can be bought but I chose to DIY some of them because I can’t afford those back then.
MAKING A NOTCHED STRAIGHT EDGE AND LEVELING BEAM
Notched Straight Edge
Wider is better but this was the only one available
Place the straight edge on top of your guitar then mark where the frets are.
Then cut the notches. At first I used a small file to cut the notches- Don’t do that, it will take a lot of time. Instead use a grinder or have someone do it for you (this is what I did).
OR buy a notched straight edge (I strongly suggest doing this)
Leveling Beam
A bit tricky to DIY since guitar necks have radius. At least as long as your guitar neck. The good thing about the one I have is it’s not too wide so I can still level the frets and keep the radius by moving it vertical instead of horizontal
Measure and cut sandpaper
Stick masking tape at the bottom
Put double sided tape on top of masking tape
Attach 240 grit sandpaper
LEVELING THE FRETS
First I need to make sure that the neck is as straight as possible so I remove the strings from the guitar, placed the notched straight edge on top of the fretboard, then adjust the truss rod using a allen wrench and stopped when no light is passing through the bottom of the notched straight edge. (I don’t have pics for this, sorry!)
After getting the neck straight I covered the fretboard and pickups with masking tape then marked the top of the frets using a permanent marker
Placed the leveling beam on top of the frets then with the guitar laying down on the table (you shouldn’t see your guitar’s brand or the side fret dots should be facing you) proceed to sand the frets down by moving the leveling beam farther and back (vertical) stopped when the marks were gone, placed the notched straight edge on top of the frets to check if all the frets were level, marked the tops again and repeat sanding, did this until they were all level with each other. This was a very lengthy process, I think about 12 hrs in total, the fret wear’s pretty deep to start with so yeah.
You can see I marked 12 AM to remind me it’s the most recent fret that's been sanded down
See how deep those are? Yep. I think these are jumbo frets
CROWNING THE FRETS
This is harder than fret leveling (without a crowning file). I used a regular triangle file to get the frets back to their round shape.
I remove the old tape then cover only the fret I’m going to work on. Marked the tops then filed one side while counting the passes done then try to do the same on the other side of the fret, until only a narrow mark on top of the fret is left.
I wasn’t able to do this perfectly (aside from first time doing this) because the file I used is rough all throughout its body the tape was getting wrecked and the frets down the neck are already very low, it’s very hard to do when the tape gets wrecked
THE RESULT
Look at those inconsistent rounds!
After all the leveling and crowning is polishing the frets which will be on the next post! I haven’t transferred the photos yet so this will be it for tonight.
Thought i’d share my diy guitar repair journey

It’s #tuesdaybluesday or #bluesdaytuesday whatever your preference. I’m still messing with playing my Esteban guitar lap style with an action raiser courtesy of @richslideguitar ...one of the ways I enjoy learning new instruments is to write tunes and try to play them. Here’s one I came up with tonight that sums up where me and Tuesday’s are at right now. She’s a fickle lover, Tuesday. Also if you’d like an action raiser hit up @richslideguitar Peace! #slideguitar #lapslideguitar #lapslide #tuesday #bluesday #diyguitar #actionraiser #estebanguitarra #estebanguitar #baltimore #thebmorecreatives #blues #folk #rootsmusic #rootsmusician #songwriting #guitar #folkmusic #folkmusician #homemademusic #livingroom (at Baltimore, Maryland) https://www.instagram.com/p/B38T5jOnrK8/?igshid=1n0elr73k1rbp

I bought another used electric bass guitar at a local secondhand store (recycle shop) here in Okinawa, Japan. I found it in the junk section, and bought it for 3,000 yen plus tax. The brand name is Aria Pro II and it says Vanguard Series. Also, the tuning keys say Made in Japan. There are some problems with the electronics, but I think I can fix them. I will also clean up the hardware, do a fret job, polish the finish, and put on some new strings. Then I will also adjust the neck relief (truss rod), string height (action), pickup height, and the intonation. I will make it playable again. I am looking forward to playing this bass guitar. I love guitars especially electric bass guitars, and I am out on a mission to save as many discarded bass guitars as I possibly can. #guitar #electricguitar #bassguitar #electricbass #electricbassguitar #bass #guitarrescue #secondhandguitar #junkguitar #usedguitar #recycleshop #recycle #restore #reuse #guitarrestoration #Okinawa #Japan #DIYguitar #ギター #ベース #flystar (at Naha, Okinawa) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0QR8eFnus6/?igshid=197k8aywu5lby

My main guitar for @theweddingcrashers.nl is my most ‘stratty’ guitar and therefore used for those moments in the @top2000vanroosendaal setlist. It’s a boston DIY kit with some small upgraded parts. It’s fairly light and sounds quite nice! #strat #stratocaster #diykit #diyguitar #selfbuild #guitar #guitars #guitarsofinstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/CdgUVfrt8kL/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
