okay while I’m on the subject of “Wish” the only thing that really interests me in this movie is the Wishing Star. There’s a literal little Star character in this movie.
The problem is, this looks too familiar, and all the promotional material and pop culture reporters are saying that Wish tells the origin stories of The Wishing Star. As in, “When You Wish Upon A.”
And they’re telling me it looks like THIS:
No. I do not accept that. This little critter is cute but the Wishing Star already has a beautiful personification, who comes down and grants the wishes of innocent hearts. You know who I’m talking about:

I meant the Blue Fairy.
Or Evangeline, if you love The Princess and the Frog and want to believe. I’m not actually mad about this, really. Because it doesn’t mean that this little Star character in Wish is the wishing Star, the Blue Fairy, Evangeline, from the other Disney movies. It looks like from the trailers that there are lots of wishes—and obviously, lots of stars in the night sky. This little yellow thing could be one of many. He actually looks a lot like this Snow White concept art:
Where the stars are like little cupids or cherubs. So maybe he’s like… the Naughty One. And sure, that’s cliche or boring or typical or whatever, and sure, I wish Disney would go back to taking their stories seriously for the right reasons…but at least I don’t have to worry that the little Luma-lookalike is supposed to be The Blue Fairy or Evangeline as a baby, or something. I can…scratch that off my list of disappointments, probably.

I find it funny how gender presentation can completely change how I feel like I’ll be perceived for the same behavior.
Like if I’d been in girlmode wearing a sundress like I imagined myself in my head as I said, “Hello chickadee!” this morning, and, “Hello Robins!” on my way home just now, I would have felt like I was just being cute and would have felt like a real life Disney Princess talking to the woodland creatures.
But knowing that I’m being perceived as a George Costanza lookalike it seems a little more unhinged.
Let’s normalize men talking to birds.

Disney's post-Renaissance: An alternate Timeline
Round 3 of my alternate universes involving Disney eras. I should note, though: given that I made the AU for the revival era first, it exists independent of my AUs for the renaissance and post-renaissance eras, which exist together here. BE WARNED: as someone who lived during this era, it's one I am not a big fan of, so I'm making a bunch of changes based on my own opinion; while the renaissance era AU had additions, the post-renaissance AU has deletions/replacements.
Fantasia 2000--The film turns out the same as it did in the OG timeline (perhaps better box office, though), but in this version, the animation style for "The Firebird Suite" leaves an immediate impact on audiences.
Kingdom of the Sun--In this AU, Pocahontas had more financial returns and the screening of KOTS had better audience feedback, so the concern of a serious, ambitious film wasn't a problem for Disney--though they did replace Huaca with Kronk for some light-heartedness. Despite all odds, Disney is able to crank out an original Incan musical epic. A spoiled king trades places with a lookalike peasant, but when the king is kidnapped and the peasant is blackmailed by the royal vizier to become a figurehead for her to rule through, they must get help from a kindhearted noblewoman and a tough female guard. If they fail, the kingdom could very well become the Kingdom of the Shadows.. While the casting of non-Indigenous or Latino actors did earn some negative press (unless you want to imagine that they made this a priority to cast Latino actors), the film received overall praise and comparisons to renaissance-era films which hadn't been seen for a little while now. The film grossed roughly $400 million at the box office and gained positive critical reception, with a sequel series focusing on more twin hijinks. The king (called Manco) and his love interest join the Disney Princess/Disney Prince lineup.
Atlantis: The Lost Empire--Due to the success of "Kingdom of the Sun," "Atlantis" was retooled in two ways: it was to be made a musical, and more focus would be put on the magical aspects of Atlantis instead of the technology aspects. Needless to say, this caused quite a bit of ruckus in production one year out, but they pulled through with $350 million at the box office and received a sequel direct-to-video film shortly after. Kida and Milo joined the DP lineup, but James Arnold Taylor dubs most of Milo's subsequent appearances. That said, it was surmised that the film might've made more had it been 3D, given the growing demand for the style.
Lilo & Stitch--Mostly the same, but Nani and Lilo's relationship gets more attention (in the OG film, it was important, but the B-story to Lilo and Stitch's relationship), as well as more Disney references and appearances as shown via the parody trailers. The latter detail set the stage for the cameos in "Ralph Wrecks the Internet." The film meets roughly the same success, but it gains a little bit more thanks to previous films being more successful.
Treasure Planet--Mostly the same, but a crucial change is made. Given the ambition the film had already with it's story and plans to combine 2D and 3D animation, the developers noted the change in atmosphere in the animation landscape (notably with the feedback from "Atlantis") and decided to make the film completely 3D instead. While this disappoints some fans, it's financially a smarter decision, making $300 million at the box office and Disney greenlighting a straight-to-DVD sequel (and a rumored TV series that never materialized).
Brother Bear--Given that "The Lion King" is with humans in this AU and "Kateri" got more praise, CEO Michael Eisner suggested a combination of the films, making another Native American musical and using animal motifs. Seeing how all their musicals had been 2D up to now, this art style was kept to not risk losing the core audience. Noting the positive feedback of the singling relationships in "Kingdom of the Sun" and "Lilo & Stitch," they push forward with a story about three brothers who go on a journey for Kenai, the youngest, to discover his true self after being bestowed a bear totem, which he attributes to being a premonition of a poor future. In a flip to the common trope of female leads being able to speak with animals, once the brothers receive their totems, they are able to do so as well--except for Kenai, who vehemently resents and rejects his totem. The film grosses over $350 million with praise for it's depiction of Native American culture, though there was concern about the use of spirit animals being misconstrued.
Rumpelstiltskin--In 2004, Disney released a powerful tale of motherhood, focusing on a young queen named Aurelia who finds her fairy tale happy ending thanks to her ability to spin straw into gold and save the kingdom from poverty. However, things go awry when a clever warlock appears and reveals that the queen isn't as graceful, clever, or skillfull as she had pretended, as he had helped her gain the king's favor, and now was taking their child as payment for it. Paying homage to classic Disney films (the animation style and storytelling is reminiscent of "Sleeping Beauty,"), the musical concerns Aurelia racing to find this creature who stole her child, as well as the name that could banish him once and for all. The film has been labeled "twisted Disney" due to Rumpelstiltskin changing his form to several darker versions of iconic Disney characters. Like with "Beauty and the Beast" (in my AU), they took influence from the film "Labyrinth," with the writers for the film researching child abduction for a more authentic and moving piece. The film's darkness made it a dark horse at the box office, grossing similar numbers to the other musicals, though it's still viewed as underrated; Aurelia was originally placed within the Disney princess line, but subsequently removed due to her physical similarities to Princess Aurora and their similar names, as well as the fact that Aurelia was a queen and controversially referred to as "too old" to join the line (both points are a source of contention among fans).
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe--Released in 2005 and sometimes just marketed as "Narnia," Disney had been inspired to make the film following the success of "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone," though they originally planned to relocate the film to America instead of England, which eventually fizzled out. The animation style is heavily influenced by the animation style for "The Firebird Suite" from "Fantasia 200 in order to truly transport the audience. The film plays off mostly the same as the OG timeline with similar figures (and let's assume the OG cast was re-used, with singing voices when needed; it was mostly the adults who sang in the film to give Narnia a fairy tale vibe while the Pevensies were "real" people), becoming somewhat of a phenomenon thanks to it's large box office and nostalgia for fans of the book. Jadis was seen as a blueprint for Elsa later on, though Lucy was seen as too young to join the Disney princess line.
Tam Lin--Released in 2006, Disney made a musical based on the folktale "Tam Lin," about a young woman who vows to rescue a man from the queen of the fairies. Given that the subject matter was similar to "Rumpelstiltskin" and this was their FOURTH musical in a row, Disney was concerned about taking on the tale and having to top (or at least meet) previous successes. As such, they did several things: the film embraces the Scottish background in contrast to previous European-esque fantasy films that went for a less clear atmosphere; the female protagonist, named Máirín, is a shy loner in comparison to the outgoing Disney females, while the male protagonist, named Sachairi, was a bit more rugged and mature than previous Disney males, inspired by video game leads like Chris Refield and Solid Snake; the story also takes influence from several other Scottish tales, such as "Rushen Coatie," and "The Sea-Maiden." The result led to a story about a woman who ventures to save the kingdom with her trusty red cow when the prince is kidnapped and imprisoned by a wicked selkie. The film earned praise for it's reliance on a specific European culture (even if some details were incorrect) and grossed $400 at the box office. Along with this, Máirín was originally intended to be a redhead, but her design eventually opted for dark brown hair, with Snow White and Natalie Portman as influences (though Pixar did use this for their own Scottish princess). As one might've expected, Máirín and Sachairi join the Disney royal line.
Meet the Robinsons--Pretty much the same film, though perhaps it makes a bit more money due to the fact that it's the first non-musical Disney film in 5 years and people were curious to know if musicals was all they were good at.
Night and Day--Released in 2008 after much turmoil, Disney comes up with a musical loosely inspired by "The Frog Princess" and "The Nightingale," the film revolves around a Korean prince who ventures with a magpie to find the secrets of immortality to save his ailing father. The film was more comedic in tone than previous musicals, but ironically seen as one of Disney's more intimate and emotional films, particularly between shy Prince Jiyu and Sujin (the magpie turned human), and it's praise for accuracy for Korean culture--except certain details like linguistics. It's noted that "Avatar: The Last Airbender" was a heavy influence, and while financially successful (making about $300 million), it's seen as underrated in contrast to the success reached during the revival era. But at least Sujin and Jiyu joined the Disney royal line.
Hope you don't mind me re-writing your childhood! My rewrite stuff with the Disney eras is probably done, but maybe I'll rewrite the concept of their direct-to-DVD films sometime.

I watched the roger corman aladdin last night....
Predictably it was bad. Not only did it rip off Disney's Aladdin but also their beauty and the beast, AND The Pagemaster. And bill and ted. I am so serious.
The MC's name is Paige and she's a bookworm! Bit on the nose and that's coming from someone who named her descendants oc Paige lol
To the surprise of no one, she's a ripoff of Belle right down to having the intro song be about how weird she is. Surprised they didn't add a jock character who tries to force Paige to date him. The only differences (besides time periods and hair) is Paige is a lot more shy than the assertive Belle.
Her design is pretty adorbs though, stealing it for a future OC princess design :D
This is supposed to be scheherazade btw...
She was the original hero of the Arabian Nights story yet in this movie she's a odd mix between Jafar & Maleficent. Also she sounds like susan Sarandon. And because I don't care about this movie enough to hide spoilers, she gets redeemed at the end...by LOBOTOMY
I've read more than a few comments compare them to a (bad) belle x aladdin or self insert fanfiction. Surprised they didn't make them a couple.
Like Aladdin in this movie also has the princess but she isn't given a name and her only personality is being scared. Princess Jasmine she is NOT!
Oh and at the end Paige does end up meeting a lookalike implied to be Aladdin's descendant. How does that work?
The bulk of the movie is simultaneously chaotic and boring. There's a musical scene where several fictional characters fight over their blonde waifu should read first and some other stuff.
There's this one scene where the heroes land in 16th century England and meet Henry VIII except he's skinny at that point.
Apparently him being skinny is a negative change in the timeline so our heroes FORCE henry to eat as much food as possible and he blows up like a balloon. Instead of you know, NATURALLY letting him gain weight. Huh? And how does this ultimately affect history. And if you REALLY know history you could have tried to help his wives.
AND THERE'S A SONG ABOUT KING HENRY THE EIGHT DOING FEEDERISM IN ORDER TO RESTORE THE TIMELINE WHAT.
The middle segments involved pirates and Blackbeard, it was alright.
NOT ANOTHER CHARACTER OVERWEIGHT BEING USED AS A PLOT POINT WHAT IS WITH THIS MOVIE & FATPHOBIA
AND THEY MADE HER SKINNY TOO TO "FIX" THE TIMELINE INSTEAD OF ALLOWING HER TO ACCEPT HER TRAITS AS IS.
A WHOLE NEW SWIRRRL! WE REPLACED CANON WITH A WHITE GIRRRL! WE DIDN'T COPY YOU WE SWEAR IT'S TRUE WE HOPE YOU DON'T FIND OUT AND TRY TO SUUUUEEE!
You know those *bad* fanfics where the canon love interest has all their moments taken by the OC? Well that what happens to the Jasmine equivalent. She doesn't even get a name.
So at the end Paige meets a new guy named "Alan" and LO AND BEHOLD HE ALSO GOT GLASSES SEE! THEY DO HAVE CHEMISTRY AFTER ALL!
So yeah, that was a 1 hr 21 min and 17 seconds I want back. On the bright side this does give me an idea for my oc Princess movie - a next gen that serves as Aladdin 5!

Yeah, they look like they walked straight out of a "Disney princess movie but reimagined" show lol. And tbf, they were already giving the vibes by being Espada lookalikes as Rangers. It's sort of inevitable XD

my marvin! lore rundown under the cut:
24-28, nonbinary (they them), pan/ace, 5’4”
what is there to say about marvin? theres not really anything ‘canon’ to compare them to, and in general, everyone’s marvins in the community are different and unique!! this ego gives so much creative freedom cause of the lack of canon content, so its always fun to see what other people do with that!
in general, my marvin is indeed still a magician, and they do have cool sorcerer powers that i still havent completely pinned down, but their main power is summoning fire, telepathy/making things move with their mind, and probably other miscellaneous things ive imagined over the years but never wrote down!
so lets talk about backstory. they were the third ego without a previous life, but they have quite a colorful life when they get created. like i feel like more happens with marvin even before anti its crazy. so flashback to the tiny apartment jack and jackie lived in, thats where marvin comes in. and uh, jack hated them the moment he saw them. my marvin has these cat like features to them. they have fangs and sharp teeth, sharp claws, and yellow pupil-slit eyes. they came out sick and unresponsive for a short time when they were born, and when they did feel well enough, they set things on fire and stuff with magic they couldnt control.
jackie, who again at the time was dealing with unmedicated schizophrenia, became really close with marvin in that kid sort of way. they were both sick and being neglected by jack. and things only got worse.
marvin was, or at least what jack assumed to be, was dying. and jack didnt want to have a body in his apartment. so he took marvin in the night, drove them out to the middle of the surrounding woods, and left them there on the ground. when he got back, jackie was heartbroken over marvin not being there, asking where they went. jack told him they ran away. and when it didnt make sense to jackie that an essentially sick baby thats never left the flat before ran off, jack told him he was delusional and to go back to bed.
now obviously, marvin didn’t end up dying alone in the woods. in fact, they got so, so much better. turns out that marvin gets a lot of their energy from nature, and being out there gave them the strength to get better. and this person basically lived like some kind of feral disney princess for awhile. another power that i just remembered about is they can talk to animals!! so yeah, literal disney princess. they hunted fish to eat and slept under trees, all the while waiting for jack to come back to get them. but he never did.
so at this point, marvin meets someone out there in the woods. i call this guy Mr. Burnake based off that one lemon demon song, but ill probably change his name someday. also he looks like arin hanson, which may or may not be a nod to the fact that a danny avidan lookalike was jackies mentor.
as u may guess, this other guy was a powerful sorcerer, and noticing this dirty, feral magician out in the woods, he took them in and took care of them for awhile. he was the one who really taught marvin the value of magic, and how to use theirs. he became kinda a father figure to marvin, and when he disappeared one day, marvin was pretty sad, but felt that they had learned enough to go out into the world.
things move pretty fast from here, like marvin gets a job at a theater, and eventually becomes a stage magician, impressing people with their magic! it was a wild time for them, being popular and having all this attention, finally getting to express themself on stage. they went through a lot of changes, figuring out their gender identity and stuff. all good things.
now ok. im gonna be real with yall. idk what happens next because it always changes. so ive sorta decided to align all the different ideas into one idea. so here it is. basically Anti comes to marvin’s show and falls in love with them, DESPITE still being with jameson at the time. they meet up, marvin becomes interested in anti too, they start dating. then marvin figures out about jameson, then figures out anti’s a demon, then figures out anti wants to kidnap and probably torture them to death in his basement, and nopes the fuck out of there.
from then on, because they knew anti was also made by jack, they wanted to find out if jackie was still out there. they tracked him down and met henrik and chase, and it was this big reunion and it was great. and then marvin is like ‘hey, antis still out there and someone is with him’ and thats when jackie is like oh SHIT and they all decide to go hunt anti and save jameson. or something like that. idk anti has to die and jameson has to get rescued somehow.
so yeah, from then on, marvin just kinda lived with the other egos and still performed while spending time with their new family. good times.
so some other basics about marvin is that they have a very witty and proud personality. their pretty short but still walk tall. they can come off as being an asshole sometimes, just because they tend to think they know whats best, and can be a lil narcissistic sometimes. they have a hard time making connections, even with the other egos, because of their past of being abandoned, but they still love the others, jackie especially. i like a storyline where they fall a little bit in love with jackie, but grow closer to chase, and they have this soft-undefined kinda lovey relationship. but, yeah, this is marvin!

The first trip Daddy and Mommy ever took me on was to Disney Land. I was in kindergarten, so five years old. I know what you’re thinking, ‘ugh Disney Land?’ I know, right?! There are so many things wrong with that place I don’t even know where to start. Anyway, when they first told me I was like, really excited. I thought that Disney Land was real - that all the princesses were actually straight from the movies, the fairies would float around the park grounds and sparkle real magic dust over you, that I would actually get to see in Minnie Mouse’s real house. Picture this - five-year-old Twinkie arrives at the front doors of Disney Land on a hot July afternoon in LA. Also, side note - does anyone else think LA is like… sticky? All of a sudden I’m standing on Hollywood boulevard with sweaty hair slicked to the back of my next while I walk over cigarette butts and cling to Daddy’s hand for dear life. Back to the point - we walk into Disney… and the structures are made of plastic?! Why does nobody talk about that? The princesses are really good lookalikes AT BEST, not to mention I’m pretty sure I saw Cinderella taking her smoke break. I guess there were some good points about the trip. I do remember enjoying it somewhat even if thinking about how I was fooled boils my blood a bit now - maybe I’m just a cynical big kid now. If I remember correctly, they had some really good food there and their fireworks show was pretty decent. I don’t think I would go as far as calling it ‘world renowned’ but like, I guess it was nice. I couldn’t really hear the music that well though. That’s supposed to be the best part! My suggestion to them is they could probably afford better props and actors if they charged more for tickets. What, like anyone should be able to go? Anyway, when I got back from my trip and returned to school that year, Tina from my class said that her mom took her to Disney World. WORLD? I’m sorry but why is my family settling for the second-best option. Tina said Disney World had FOUR different kingdoms, I actually didn’t believe her until I got home that day and looked it up on Daddy’s work computer. When I found out I cried for like four hours, I was so sad. It’s okay though because Mommy said she would buy me a new iPad if I stopped crying. I guess that was an alright way to make up for it, the bare minimum really. Anyway, my advice to all of you out there is - GO TO DISNEY WORLD! Or not, Universal Studios might be better.

Honestly, I still want my wedding dress to look like Princess Aurora’s and it’s incredibly sad to see Disney’s princess wedding dress designs look like the same strapless dress designs that literally everyone and their mother wears in weddings.
Like, I loved Kate Middleton’s dress, it was different from the popular strapless dresses, it had long lacey sleeves, I wanted that dress when I was in high school!
Hell, I wouldn’t mind the giant poofy sleeves that were en vogue in the 80s. Granted, my body type is too thick in the bone depot to fit in my mom’s dress even after losing weight (my mom was TINY and probably underweight when she was my age after all), but I wouldn’t mind a lookalike that fits.

’Tis the season for Christmas favorites and squeezing in potential Best of the Year contenders. This Round Up is shorter than usual since December is for rewatching lots of Christmas favorites—you can find some all-time faves in my Letterboxd list if you’re still in the Christmas spirit. (I still am!)

December Crowd-Pleasers
1. Free Guy (2021)
Ryan Reynolds further proving he is a master of the comic facial expressions. Also, I just want Joe Keery to be a movie star! Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 6/10
2. The Running Man (1987)
Before The Hunger Games (or Squid Game), Arnold Schwarzenegger starred in a Stephen King adaptation about a life-or-death TV show in a future dystopia. It’s a spoof of consumerism and culture that wants us to entertain us to death; it’s also a solid ‘80s action-adventure. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 6.5/10
3. Double Feature - Absolutely Bonkers Sequels With Christmas Settings: Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990) + The Princess Switch 3: Romancing the Star (2021)
Do you want Christmas movies that are shy on the schmaltz and heavy on the bonkers? These sequels are made for you! In Gremlins 2: The New Batch (Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 6.5/10), much of the original cast returns, as do those evil little buggers with a knack for destroying everything in their path. It’s somehow even more bonkers than the ’84 original, and now features a Gremlin who can talk! In The Princess Switch 3 (Crowd: 7/10 // Critic: 4/10), Vanessa Hudgens and Vanessa Hudgens and Vanessa Hudgens play a lookalike heiress, princess, and baker from Chicago, respectively. It’s the best kind of bad movie, full of over-the-top fashion, convoluted/poorly explained hijinks, and tons of Christmas decor.
4. Spider-man: No Way Home (2021)
Some of the best cotton candy you’ll ever taste. You’ll realize later there was no lasting substance for the arc of Tom Holland’s Spider-man, but gosh darn it if it wasn’t the most delicious, spectacle-filled snack. Crowd: 10/10 // Critic: 6.5/10
5. Encanto (2021)
If spending the holidays with your family has confirmed your belief that your family is both the most amazing and the most dysfunctional group out there, Encanto knows how you feel. Mirabel’s family can control the weather, grow flowers, shape shift, lift anything, cure any ailment with baking, and hear a pin drop between them. But, like all families, the Madrigals have some drama. Fortunately, we get to work through it with new music from Lin-Manuel Miranda and another solid story in the Disney canon. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 8/10
December Critic Picks
1. House of Gucci (2021)
Gaga! Driver! Pacino! Irons! Heck, I even loved Leto in this. House of Gucci was exactly what I hoped it would be—so much so it’s one of maybe 15 movies for which I would happily watch a 3+ hour version. This fashion-filled, Italian accent-overloaded, Macbeth meets King Lear drama of greed, succession, and murder rules. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 10/10
2. West Side Story (2021)
I wasn’t sure Steven Spielberg could pull off a worthy remake to one of my all-time favorite musicals, but this updated interpretation matched or exceeded the ‘60s classic in almost every way. (I did miss Russ Tamblyn quite a bit, though.) I suspect it’s even better when you don’t need to make an unplanned intermission for a tornado watch. Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 10/10
3. I’ll Be Seeing You (1944)
Joseph Cotten and Ginger Rogers meet on a train over Christmas holiday and are immediately smitten, but secrets and a nosy cousin (Shirley Temple) threaten to ruin their vacation. A sweet but not-too-sentimental (and under-seen) Christmas classic. Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 8.5/10
4. Double Feature: Being the Ricardos + TCM’s The Plot Thickens Season 3 (2021)
Guys, I’m all in on Sorkin, and I love Lucy—Being the Ricardos is for me. While it took a bit for me to warm up to Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem stepping into the pearls and coif I grew up watching in reruns, they won me over in their portrayal of all the drama behind one of the great sitcoms. Listen to TCM’s third season of their podcast all about Lucille Ball to learn how accurate Sorkin’s take on this season of her life is. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 9/10
5. tick, tick…BOOM! (2021)
Yes, this taps into my I’m-almost-30-and-what-have-I-actually-done-with-my-life anxiety, but Andrew Garfield and Lin-Manuel Miranda are affirming why they’re both big winners of 2021, and Jonathan Larson’s musical is full of music you’ll want to listen to again and again. Bonus: Vanessa Hudgens reminds me why I want the High School Musical squad in tons of musicals! Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 9/10
Also this December…
On SO IT’S A SHOW?, Kyla and I got smart with Get Smart in the season 5 finale of Gilmore Girls. It’s a a James Bond spoof that is still making us laugh today. So put down your shoe phone—unless that’s how you listen to podcasts—and join us for a discussion of spies, robots, KAOS, brainwashed dogs, switched briefcases, lots of apologies to the Chief, and a couple that likes to steal yachts for date night.
I checked out Finch and The Mitchells vs. the Machines in my quest to watch buzzy 2021 movies before the end of the year. They didn’t make the cut for my Round Ups, but it did inspire me to make a Letterboxd list of movies with notable St. Louis moments since my hometown appeared in both of those films.
