Netflix's 'Seoul Vibe' review: Fast, furious, and fun '80s action
Netflix’s ‘Seoul Vibe’ review: Fast, furious, and fun ’80s action
“Let’s be fucking annoying.” Doing sick burnouts quite literally around the rich, corrupt, and powerful is the name of the game in Seoul Vibe. This perfectly bratty line, lazily uttered from the backseat of a moving car by our protagonist, Dong-wook, comes at a moment when the film literally drives government corruption into the wall — to immensely satisfying effect. Directed by Moon Hyun-sung,…

Actor Kwon Sang-woo confirmed to appear in 'Curtain Call'
Tumblr media
Kwon Sang-woo recently announced the news of joining the new KBS2 drama 'Curtain Call: Trees Die Standing' (directed by Yoon Sang-ho, written by Jo Sung-geol, hereafter referred to as 'Curtain Call') as Bae Dong-jae, the successor of a giant conglomerate.
'Curtain Call' is a work about people involved in the play of a man who plays a grandson who defected to fulfill the last wish of an elderly grandmother from North Korea.
Kwon Sang-woo takes on the role of Bae Dong-jae, the heir of a large conglomerate group. Bae Dong-je is a natural born conglomerate who can feel the aristocratic appearance in every little detail. He has no hesitation in revealing his thoughts and engages in bold words and actions that do not consider the feelings of others at all.
However, he has a strong logic and certainty in his words, so he is a man of style that has no choice but to admit that he never listens to nonsense even if he hears that he is not polite. Bae Dong-je is shaken by something that he has missed only once in his life.
Kwon Sang-woo has appeared in dramas such as 'Fly, Gaecheon Dragon' and 'Queen of Mystery', as well as movies such as 'Pirates: Goblin Flag', 'Hitman', 'God's Move: Destiny', 'Detective: Returns', 'Detective: The Beginning' ', and so on. Attention is focused on what kind of acting chemistry Kwon Sang-woo will show with Ha Ji-won, Kang Ha-neul, Sung Dong-il, Ji-so Ji, and Noh Sang-hyun in 'Curtain Call', and what kind of acting he will portray.
'Curtain Call' is a collaboration between director Yoon Sang-ho, who directed the dramas 'River of the Moon', 'Wind, Cloud and Rain', and 'Saimdang Light's Diary', and writer Jo Sung-geol, who produced the movies 'Hitman' and 'Youth Police'. With one work, the full-scale production began.

Chapter 12.
Tumblr media
Chapter 13:
From the high of the weekend. Monday was a different story. As Seo Jun looked at YN, Hyun Ji and Si Woo sat together eating lunch in silence. This was quite a departure from when the trio would sit with the group and eat. Loudly chatting, being annoying and just having fun. This whole day the three of them had been acting weird. Feeling someone tap his shoulder, he looked at Ju Kyung, she nodded her head in their direction.
“Something is definitely wrong with them. Hyun Ji and Si Woo just started dating but neither are acting like it. YN should be over the moon but she’s just upset” Ju Kyung said looking at the three of them sadly. Soo Ah, Seo Jun and Cho Rong all nodded their heads.
“It’s almost like we’ve gone back in time with Hyun Ji and YN being isolated from our Class but worse because none of us knows why they are being like that. At least before we could blame Hae Sung but who knows the reason this time.” Soo Ah sighed, she hated what was happening today. From the moment the YN and Hyun Ji stepped into class this morning, they looked sad and like they hadn’t slept all night. In YN’s case, she looked like she had been crying. When she saw Si Woo, he seemed just as depressed as the other two.
“Well, we’ve got to get to the bottom of this. I can’t handle YN looking so sad and not knowing who I should be beating up for it” Seo Jun huffed out. He was annoyed. After that cheek kiss, it had taken the whole of Sunday, a video chat with Su Ho, Ju Kyung screaming at him and Cho Rong writing up a whole plan. For him to finally be ready to ask YN out today. Only for YN to come in looking like she had found out her whole life was a lie.
Ju Kyung whacked his shoulder. Making Seo Jun yelp. Which made YN, Hyun Ji and Si Woo turn to look at them. Seo Jun saw YN give him a small smile. Seo Jun smiled back at her happy that he at least managed to make her smile once today.
“You know very well Han Seo Jun, that the last thing YN would want is for you to beat up someone. She’s stopped you from beating up Hae Sung enough times for you to know better” Ju Kyung told Seo Jun angrily. While he agreed with what she said. Physically hurting whoever made YN sad would make him feel better. Yet finding out what was upsetting her was the first priority. The second was making YN happy. And if he could get away with it, he would beat someone up.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The day had gone by pretty quickly. Unfortunately, School and the antics of your class didn’t help, in taking your mind away from thinking about what you’d found out about Hae Sung.
You felt guilty about ruining Hyun Ji and Si Woo’s first day as a couple in school. They were just as upset if not more about everything. They didn’t deserve to have their day ruined by Hae Sung and his manipulations. You knew they were angry on your behalf. You loved them for it but they should enjoy being a couple today.
They had slept over at your house and the three of you had come to School together. You had made up your mind to send them off to just spend time together, just have a date or whatever but anything that didn’t involve you being the third wheel. Also so they could just relish in the fact that they were finally together after so many years of pining after each other.
That plan of yours was thwarted the moment, you saw Cho Rong and Ju Kyung dragging Si Woo and Hyun Ji into the classroom where you were with Seo Jun for your tutoring session. Seo Jun stood up and stood at the front of the class. Cho Rong told Hyun Ji and Si Woo to sit next to you. Silently they took their seats, looking at you with questions in their eyes. You shrugged; you had no idea what was going on. Cho Rong cleared his throat and you three turned to look at him. He was standing with Ju Kyung and Seo Jun. All three had their arms crossed.
“Uh what the hell is going on?” Si Woo after it had been silent for some time, with them just looking at you. Making you squirm, Hyun Ji looking away and Si Woo failing to keep eye contact with any of them.
“We should be asking you three that, today you’ve all been acting weird, and we would like to know why,” Ju Kyung said politely. You exchanged looks with Hyun Ji and Si Woo. The three of you nodded in unison. Hyun Ji opened her mouth to reply but you cut her off.
“I’ll explain but can you guys let Hyun Ji and Si Woo go. They were going on a date after school and well the reason for us acting weird is all to do with me anyway” You quickly say. Despite their protests. Cho Rong escorts them out of the classroom. Once he comes back you take a deep breath.
“Uh before I start, I just want to know, why do you guys, dislike Lee Hae Sung?” You ask calmly. Cho Rong lets out a laugh while Seo Jun and Ju Kyung look confused.
“I’ve got a list of reasons, but my main reason is that the guy acts like he is so much better than everyone. He treats everyone, apart from you YNie his best friend like dirt” Cho Rong proclaimed. You nodded your head agreeing. Hae Sung didn’t know how to treat people he perceived to be beneath him. No matter how much you lectured him on treating everyone the same. He just didn’t listen. You turned to Ju Kyung, nodding at her to speak.
“I haven’t been here long enough but every time I’ve seen Lee Hae Sung, he has either been shouting at you YNie or he’s being mean to our classmates. Oh, and the time he almost hit Hyun Ji. That was the worst thing he could’ve done. So, I just stay out of his way” You sighed, everything Ju Kyung said was true. Hae Sung had made the worst impression on her. Ju Kyung hadn’t even been at Saebom High School for that long, but she knew to steer clear from Hae Sung.
“I’ve got quite the story. Sometime after we first started at Saebom, Su Ho and I heard this guy shouting in a classroom and then that guy stormed out of the classroom. We went to the classroom to see what was going on. We heard this girl crying but we didn’t know what to do. So Su Ho messaged Soo Jin to come to that classroom, we waited outside till Soo Jin came. Later she told us what was going on. I hated Hae Sung from the moment I found out that he screamed at her girl and left her to tears” Seo Jun told you.
You didn’t know what to say to that. You had no idea that Seo Jun and Su Ho had called Soo Jin when they heard you crying. To think that would’ve been your first meeting with Seo Jun. You with your eyes red and puffy from crying. Well, you’d cried in front of him before and you already liked the guy. But as a first meeting, it would’ve been disastrous.
“Uh, that would’ve been an interesting first meeting, to say the least right.” Why would you say that? What is wrong with you. You just looked down berating yourself for even opening your mouth after what Seo Jun had revealed.
Ju Kyung and Cho Rong looked at Seo Jun confused. Seo Jun was thinking about what you’d just said when it clicked in his head.
“You were the girl, Hae Sung made cry that day.” Seo Jun exclaimed shocked. You just nodded your head before looking back down at the ground, fiddling with your hands nervously.
You could feel the tears gathering in our eyes. You furiously started blinking, you were not going to cry in front of Ju Kyung and Cho Rong. Not in front of Seo Jun again. You’d cried enough yesterday, how did you still have tears left to spill.
Seo Jun saw you with your head ducked down. The anger that had built up in him left instantaneously. All he wanted to do was comfort you. Be the shoulder for you to cry on again. He looked at Ju Kyung and Cho Rong. Whispered for them to leave. They left immediately. Seo Jun knelt in front of you. He took hold of your hands in his. This made you look up at him.
As you two gazed into each other’s eyes. A tear slipped out of your eyes. Gently Seo Jun wiped that tear away.
“Hey, let’s not cry. Lee Hae Sung is not worth your precious tears. It hurts me to see you cry Princess” You smile softly at what Seo Jun says. It’s been some time since he’s called you that. You’ve missed it. It was supposed to be patronising when he first called you Princess but since then it has become an inside joke between you two. That Seo Jun only uses to make you smile.
“Sorry, I always seem to end up crying in front of you,” You say sadly. It’s not that you hated crying or thought it was bad. No, you like any other girl who liked a guy. Just wanted to show him the best of you. Not your crying face. You wanted Seo Jun to remember how you looked in your pretty dress from the Ball. Not for your crying face to be what he remembers. Only because he’s seen it so many times before.
Unbeknownst to the two of you in the classroom. Ju Kyung and Cho Rong were outside looking at the scene before them. They couldn’t hear what was going on but seeing was enough for them.
“Do you think Seo Jun will do it?” Cho Rong whispers to Ju Kyung.
She looks at Cho Rong before looking back at the two people in the classroom. From the way Seo Jun was looking at you and how you were looking back with the same look in your eyes.
“Honestly I hope so but at this rate, they might just kiss, and I’ll take that as a win,” Ju Kyung says quietly. Cho Rong nods his head in agreement, turning to look back at the two of you in the classroom.
“You have nothing to be sorry for Princess. I’d gladly always be the shoulder you cry on.” Seo Jun tell you. You look at him in shock. You had convinced yourself that Seo Jun must hate you for crying so much around him. To hear the opposite from his won mouth you were stunned.
Seo Jun can’t help but laugh at your shocked face. You were just too cute for words sometimes. Seo Jun gets you to stand up. You do and he hugs you. Surprised you become still. Then you relax and wrap your arms around Seo Jun, hugging him. After what felt like hours to both of you. You let go of each other. You smile at Seo Jun, who smiles back at you.
“How do you seem to know the right things to say to me Han Seo Jun,” You ask jokingly. Not really expecting an answer, you’ve started to get your things and are packing up when Seo Jun’s answer stops you.
“Well, when I see your tears YLN YN I just say the first thing that I hope will make you smile,” Seo Jun says. Seeing that you’ve stopped moving. He comes closer to you.
You look at him, as he walks towards you. If this was a drama, there would be some sappy song playing in the background. Alas, the only things you can hear is your heart pounding furiously and the shouts of the boy’s playing basketball outside the classroom.
Seo Jun smiles at you. He puts some hair that had fallen into your face behind your ear. He smiles when he sees your face heating up. You were too adorable and if he didn’t ask you out now. He would forever be annoyed with himself.
“Uh, the reason we were all acting so weird today was that yesterday we found out some stuff regarding me and Hae Sung which made me rethink why I ever considered him my best friend.” you blurt out suddenly. The tension was rising in the room and in a panic, you simply told Seo Jun what had been going on today.
Seo Jun blinks. Processing what you just told him. Makes sense that it would be Lee Hae Sung as the reason for you being upset. It was always that guy. Just once Seo Jun wanted to punch the idiot. But he knew how much that would disappoint you. The last thing Seo Jun wanted to do was disappoint you by picking a fight with Hae Sung.
Sighing, Seo Jun started to pick up his things as well. You were waiting for him. The moment was gone. No, that moment was gone but Seo Jun was determined. He did not spend the whole of yesterday being screamed at, talking to and being given a whole plan. That he doesn’t ask you out today.
As you were walking towards to door, Seo Jun grabbed your wrist gently. You turned to look at him confusion clear in your eyes. He smiles at you, and you smile back still confused.
“I wanted to know if you wanted to go out tomorrow. Not us studying outside of school. No. I Han Seo Jun am asking you YLN YN out on a date?”
You look at Seo Jun in astonished silence. You didn’t hear that correctly. You shake your head, look at Seo Jun holding your wrist. Your eyes follow his arm up to his face. You look into his eyes. Those eyes you could drown in. There is nothing but sincerity in his eyes. This guy you like is genuinely asking you out. You open your mouth to reply but no sounds come out. Taking a deep breath. You look at Seo Jun smiling at you. You can’t help but smile back at him.
“Yes, I’d love to go on a date with you Han Seo Jun” In his excitement Seo Jun picks you up, spinning you around. You laugh, telling him to put you down. He does and then takes your hand in his, interlocking your fingers you both walk out of the classroom.
2020 Year in Thirst Pt. 2
Sometimes, I will watch a drama for the plot/premise/substance and be rewarded with a surprise hottie, and it’s the best feeling ever!  It’s like finding money in your pocket that you didn’t know about.  The following list of dramas can be described as:
Came for the plot, was rewarded with a surprising side of thirst
1. Flower of Evil
Brief Summary: Lee Jun Ki plays Baek Hee Sung and Moon Chae Won plays Cha Ji Won, his wife who is also a detective.  What Ji Won doesn’t know is that her husband, Hee Sung, is actually Hyun Soo, a man on the run from a murder that he did not commit and also a suspected accomplice to a series of murders committed by his father in the past.  Oh yeah, his dad secretly tried to groom him into being his protege/murder partner.  Because of how he was raised, HS believes that he has no emotions and is simply putting on an act as the perfect husband and father.  His “parents” are in on the ruse and are actually the ones who forced him into assuming their comatose son’s identity.  Anyway, of course things from the past start to catch up with HS and his wife is somehow assigned to investigating his old murder case.  She of course feels betrayed, but also conflicted as she discovers her husband is not who he said he was and a prime murder suspect.  Things get even more complicated as the real murderer re-appears with fabulous long hair and tries to frame HS for the murders.  In between all of this are delicious make outs between the couple and at least one instance where they banged so hard, HS was wiped out the next morning.
Surprise Thirst Factor: I checked out this drama fully expecting to drop it because the promos were so misleading and unappealing. But boy was I in for a pleasant surprise!  Not only was the drama super addicting, it also had some nice eye candy in the form of Lee Jun Ki being a completely unrealistic house husband who satisfies in the housework (The man cooks and does the laundry!), childcare, and bedroom and Kim Ji Hoon’s glorious mane of beauty making viewers have a moral crisis over lusting after a homicidal maniac (who turned out to be a real loser without murder daddy around to clean up his mess.  It’s ok, we’ll always have his hair).
Tumblr media
Yes, work that hair honey.  It’s the only good thing you’ve got going on for you (the character, not Kim Ji Hoon)
Tumblr media
The chemistry between Lee Jun Ki and Moon Chae Won was fire and the make out scenes were soo believable.  Like yes, these two beautiful people are really into being married to each other and understandably want to make out all the time.
Tumblr media
He’s the primary caretaker for their daughter and it’s just *swoons.*  Not all thirst traps come in the form of sexy abs (although I would not mind if he wanted to flash some).
2. Six Flying Dragons
Brief Summary: The story of young Yi Bang Won (who later becomes King Taejong) and the founding of the Joseon Dynasty.  As short as it sounds, that really is an accurate summary of the drama haha.
Surprise Thirst Factor: I started watching this drama because I heard it was a great sageuk and I’m a big fan of Yoo Ah In.  Even though I’m a fan of his acting, Yoo Ah In doesn’t necessarily get my hormones raging so I wasn’t expecting to be so thirsty while watching Six Flying Dragons.  But then.  BUT THEN.  Byun Yo Han showed up in all his scruffy tortured deadly killer glory and my hormones woke up and said hi, hello, who are you, what’s your name, what’s your sign, can I get your number?  The deadlier and more tortured his character got, the sexier he became to me.  Sorry Yoo Ah In, you’ll always be my acting boo, but Byun Yo Han’s got my thirst.  Byun Yo Han looks so good when he's sad and/or covered in blood, it makes me feel like a sadist for thinking that I wouldn’t mind if the drama made his character cry some more.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. Ever Night S1
Brief Summary: As a child, Ning Que witnessed his entire household get massacred because of a prophecy that the child of Hades will be born from the house and bring about the Eternal Night.  Somehow, he managed to escape and was the lone survivor.  He finds a baby buried in a pile of dead bodies as he’s fleeing and names her Sang Sang.  The two orphans grow up inseparable from each other and do whatever it takes to survive in the harsh, cruel world.  Ning Que earns money by becoming a deadly mercenary and Sang Sang takes care of the household affairs.  At one point, Ning Que becomes a disciple of the powerful Fu Zi and somehow gets entangled in the struggles between the Holy Sect and Demon Sect.  A bunch of beautiful women fall for Ning Que, and the drama tries its hardest to convince us that he has chemistry with and reciprocates the feelings of one of them (i.e. Mo Shan Shan), but anybody who was even half paying attention knows that the only one for Ning Que is Sang Sang.  They are the OTP of all OTPs and take “ride or die” to a whole other level. Oh also, their height difference is the stuff manga dreams are made of. Ning Que is a “good guy” but also not a “good guy” in the sense that he is not above doing whatever it takes to seek revenge and is only out for himself and Sang Sang (and later, his older brothers and sisters from the academy).
Surprise Thirst Factor: Chen Feiyu is an attractive person but I could not in good conscience thirst after him because he was literally born in the year 2000.  It did not help that he was only 18 when he filmed Ever Night and looked every bit his age.  My thirst may have no shame, but it does have its own set of principles and one of those principles is thou shalt not lust after those born in the new millennium!  Luckily for me, Second Brother is played by Dylan Kuo who is a beautiful, elegant, tall man
Tumblr media
and Brother Chao is exactly the type of rugged and manly that I am into.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(you don’t have to be)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
who looks better when wet
Tumblr media
AHEM. Yeah.
Sixth Brother is also not so bad with his scanty pounding work attire,
Tumblr media
4. Novoland: Eagle Flag
Brief Summary:  Asule is the prince of a tribe in the grasslands who is held as a royal guest (i.e. hostage) in the Eastland Empire.  There he meets his two future best friends, Yu Ran, a free spirited princess who is descended from a race of bird people, and Ji Ye, an emo neglected/shunned son of a concubine who is probably the best fighter in the empire.  Ji Ye loves Yu Ran who is a ball of sunshine to his Johnny Raincloud dark emo self.  Yu Ran loves Ji Ye back.  Asule loves both his friends and will do anything to protect them.  The world decides to fuck over best friends Asule, Ji Ye, and Yu Ran for no reason as they try their best to just live a peaceful life away from all the political scheming and fighting.
Surprise Thirst-worthiness: I was completely content with enjoying Eagle Flag purely for its story and substance.  It’s seriously a wonderful, yet heartbreaking drama and the scale of the production is amazing.  No cheap $10 costumes here.  Also, the direction is beautiful/artistic and not the run of mill “let’s shoot it and complete it as fast as we can.”  The two main actors were cute, but not really my type.  Then the drama decided to give Ji Ye the “Sexy Bloody Tormented Killer Makeover” and all of a sudden your girl was rushing to MDL to check Chen Ruo Xuan’s birthday and calculating his age.  I am simple, predictable, and consistent when it comes to my thirst and give a character some scruff, long hair, angst, and some bloodlust and I’m all yours.  I am literally:
Tumblr media
Is it wrong that when Ji Ye showed up looking like this ready to kill his mother’s torturer
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I thought, yes, can we have him kill another?
5. Run On
Brief Summary: Im Siwan plays Ki Seon Geom, a national track runner from a rich family who is a bit of an oddball and marches to his own beat.  Although his words can sometimes be construed as rude since he has no filter, they are also completely honest and have no hidden meaning.  He also has his own personal code that he lives by and he will stick to it no matter how negatively it may impact himself.  He meets Oh Mi Joo, a translator with her own strange quirks and sparks fly as Mi Joo is assigned to be his interpreter.
Surprise Thirst-worthiness: I kind of watched this drama by accident.  I had read about Im Siwan starring in a new drama but nothing I saw from the description or promos for Run On appealed to me.  Nor did it give me any information about what the drama would be about.  Then one day, I just happened to be browsing Netflix for something to play in the  background and decided on Run on since I thought I wouldn’t be that invested.  What a happy accident that turned out to be because I’m so in love with this drama right now.  This is a case where the thirst does not stem from the character’s physical appearance, but from the intensity/charisma the actor brings to the character and the character himself.  Ki Seon Geom is so odd, but so appealing at the same time and Im Siwan is so magnetic in the role.  Prior to Run On, Im Siwan wasn’t really my type physically.  In fact, I always scratched my head whenever people called him handsome in dramas (I know, I know, forgive me).  So color me shocked when I found myself swooning all over Im Siwan in the second episode of Run On.  Now, it’s like I have “Im Siwan is attractive” glasses on and he looks attractive in everything to me.  I want to gobble up all the dramas he’s been in.
[Countdown to 2021] Top 5 Kdrama of 2020
This past year of what was undoubtedly an absolutely horrendous year of 2020--for a variety of reasons--I can honestly say that one of the reasons why I stayed sane was because of Kdrama. Being at home all day, even for an extreme homebody for me, can get harrowing because the choice of going out or not was taken from me when my area went into lockdown.
And so....to Kdrama it is. I think that 2020 was one of the very few years that I’ve seen nearly all of the Kdrama that aired on MBC, SBS, KBS, TvN, and jTBC...which is....a lot, I’ve come to realize. That brought me to think--which would I consider my top 5?
Hmmm.....Well, here I go.
Please note that my top 5 are not in any particular order. Each one that made it to my top 5 is beloved for a completely different reason. I also don’t go down the critic route and pick apart the direction, the story, yada yada. I just made this list purely on how much I enjoyed them and how much they’ve made an impression on me.
(SPOILERS AHEAD.)
#5 -- The Tale of the Nine-Tailed
Starring Lee Dong Wook, Jo Bo Ah, Kim Beom, Hwang Hee
Tumblr media
I like Lee Dong Wook as a Grim Reaper, and I like Lee Dong Wook as a gumiho/nine-tailed fox. What can I say?
That being said, The Tale of the Nine-Tailed was really about Kim Beom’s character Rang. He started as a villain (sort of), then became a reluctant ally (sort of), and then met his end with a smile. He redeemed himself throughout the entire drama, and I shed a lot of tears in the final episode, because he finally was afraid to die because he had something to live for, but his desire for his brother to come back was so strong that he’d gladly give up the remaining time he had, stolen as it was, to give his big brother a final gift. His sacrifice made an impact more with me than any other character because it was so out of character for him, and yet not. His choice wasn’t unexpected, and yet I felt like a train wreck when I finally saw it on the screen.
#4 -- Half of a Half/A Piece of Your Mind
Starring Jung Hae In, Chae Soo Bin, Lee Ha Na, Kim Sung Kyu
Tumblr media
Or....known as the drama that is known for being tragically cut short. Let me tell you, I loved this drama. It’s not an epic romance drama by any means, but the tone of the drama was really calming and healing, which is basically the premise--two lonely souls grieving find solace in one another.
I do wish that they didn’t drag the mystery of “Who is the husband?” for so long, but I enjoyed the dynamics between Moon Ha Won and Ha Seo Woo so much that I really didn’t mind it. I really wished that they would’ve kept the original run of 16 episodes instead of slashing it to a mere 12, because it really limited the writer and directors to wrap up the story, but I also do think that if they went with the 16-episode route we would definitely have the noble idiocy trope inserted, some way or another, instead of the really lovely way that Seo Woo wanted distance from a devastated Ha Won, to get over her sadness and fear of happiness, in order to run to him.
#3 -- The Flower of Evil
Starring Lee Jun Ki, Moon Chae Won, Jang Hee Jin, Seo Hyun Woo
Tumblr media
If Kairos was a suspense drama, The Flower of Evil was definitely a thriller teetering on the edges of horror. My God, this drama scared the living daylights out of me. Lee Jun Ki as a (alleged) sociopath I could see, considering that he acted a similar role in the drama-that-must-not-be-named, but in the flashbacks his serial killer father’s eyes was enough for me to shut my laptop and just breathe.
....And that was before the introduction of Kim Ji Hoon’s character.
Lee Jun Ki is the main lead, and the story focuses on him, but the one who shone in this drama was definitely Kim Ji Hoon. I’ve watched Kim Ji Hoon over the years, and I am somewhat convinced that his sudden appearance as a very psychopathic killer will jump out at my screen and strangle me in my chair. It’s very different from his usual roles and, my God, I am looking forward what he’ll choose for his next project.
#2 -- The King: Eternal Monarch
Starring Lee Min Ho, Kim Go Eun, Kim Kyung Nam, Woo Do Hwan
Tumblr media
Ah, the epic modern-Korean monarchy...but with a twist of parallel universes, and more! (Let’s sprinkle in time travel while we’re at it!)
I think that this is the one drama in 2020 where I was simultaneous satisfied that it was finished, and yet still full of unanswered questions. Like, how does a cross-universe couple happen? Especially with doppelgängers?? And why can only certain people remember what happened??? What happens now????
Putting that aside, The King: Eternal Monarch had one major flaw: Lee Rim, played by veteran Lee Jung Jin. I felt that they completely his potential as a very potent villain in the interest of creating an epic love story. I did love the Lee Gon-Jung Tae Eul couple and chemistry (which they did, contrary to some people’s opinions), and it was the characters that really stayed with me--i.e. Jo Young/Jo Eun Sup. Woo Do Hwan really outdid him in both his characters. He nearly convinced me that it was two different actors play two characters!
And...now to #1.
#1 -- Do You Like Brahms?
Starring Park Eun Bin, Kim Min Jae, Kim Sung Chul, Park Ji Hyun
Tumblr media
OK....I said that I loved each drama differently, right? Ahahaha....yeah, all lies. If I were to pick just ONE drama of the year, it’d be Do You Like Brahms?
How many ways can I wax poetic about this one? I am still obsessed with this drama, and so very happy that Kim Min Jae and Park Eun Bin won the Best Couple Award for this drama at this year’s SBS Drama Awards. I have my gripes about the drama, but they don’t in any way outweigh the highs.
I just loved the respect and communication between Park Joon Young and Chae Song Ah, both before as acquaintances/friends/comrades in respective unrequited loves, and afterwards as the giddy, heart-fluttering moments as a couple. They understood each other, and accepted one another, as two people experiencing the same pain. They didn’t try to sugarcoat it or hide it behind a smile, which they did towards everyone else. Even with Joon Young’s missed opportunities to communicate, Song Ah tried her very best, when she clearly told him that she didn’t appreciate being in the dark, and that she wanted to lean on him. I also loved how in the drama, their words and actions mirrored one another, in the way that they confessed their feelings, and asked the other to wait--not a rejection, but for an opportunity to catch up.
Honorable Mention -- Forest
Starring Park Hae Jin, Jo Bo Ah, No Gwang Sik, Jung Yeon Joo
Tumblr media
I really like Park Hae JIn, and I really like Jo Bo Ah, so put them together? Yep, we have Forest--a drama that mixes romance, mystery(?), and the proverbial forest. The drama did fall kind of flat, which was a disappointment, considering how much news I’ve heard about it, and the villains didn’t get as much development they needed to seem as “evil” they should be.
One of my favorite lines of the drama I think will stay as one of my favorites is a line made by Park Hae Jin’s Kang Sang Hyeok in the final episode (yes, I know): “The reason why I’m acting like this now...is solely because of my personal revenge--the sacred sense of duty that you think I have...I don’t.” He acknowledges his wrongdoing and is making amends, but he doesn’t apologize or try to coat his actions as anything but self-serving. He’s not someone who immediately changes due to the power of love, but takes it slowly.
Park Sung Hoon Shares His Excitement At Reuniting With Nana In Their New Drama “Memorials”
Tumblr media
The title “Memorials” is a reference to the historical definition of the word “memorial” as a “statement of facts,” usually as the basis of a petition to the government or other authority figure.
When asked about why he chose this drama as his next project, Park Sung Hoon said, “I had faith in director Hwang Seung Gi and I was attracted to the humor and thematic messages in writer Moon Hyun Kyung’s script. I was also excited to work with Nana again.” Nana and Park Sung Hoon previously worked together in the drama “Justice.”
He continued, “Seo Gong Myung is righteous to the point of prickliness, bluntness, and clumsiness. He developed a by-the-books personality when he was young as a defence mechanism, so he seems prickly on the outside, but he’s still tender and human on the inside.”
He added, “[To film a rom-com], I focused on relying on the script and direction as my foundation and creating good chemistry with my co-stars, especially with Nana.”
Park Gyu Young may be starring in a new drama with Ji Sung and GOT7’s Jinyoung!  On August 27, Sports Chosun reported that Park Gyu Young will be joining the cast of the upcoming tvN drama “Devil Judge” (literal translation) as a leading character.  In response to the reports, a source from Park Gyu Young’s agency Saram Entertainment stated, “Park Gyu Young has received the offer to star in the new drama ‘Devil Judge,’ and she is positively reviewing the offer.”  “Devil Judge” will tell the story of a head judge who turns the court into a reality show in order to punish evil—and the chase that ensues as another judge attempts to learn the head judge’s true identity. Ji Sung and Jinyoung are currently in talks to star in the drama.  According to the reports, Park Gyu Young has been offered the role of Yoon Soo Hyun, the long time friend of Kim Ga On, who Jinyoung is in talks to star as. Having confessed to Kim Ga On five times since preschool, she is an unyielding woman who doesn’t know how to give up. After graduating from the police academy, Yoon Soo Hyun becomes a detective who is the ace of the investigation team. Her refreshing beauty also adds to her popularity, and only Kim Ga On seems to be unaware of her charms. As Kim Ga On’s most loyal friend, Yoon Soo Hyun will be a charismatic character who is ready to put anything on the line to protect Kim Ga On.  After making her debut through a web drama in 216, Park Gyu Young starred in “Magic School” also with Jinyoung, “Solomon’s Perjury,” “Just Between Lovers,” “The Third Charm,” “Romance Is a Bonus Book,” “It’s Okay to Not Be Okay,” and more.  “Devil Judge” will be written by judge Moon Yoo Suk, who is the original author and scriptwriter behind “Miss Hammurabi,” and helmed by producing director (PD) Choi Jung Gyu, who directed “Children of Nobody.”  The drama is slated to air in the first half of 221. Lee Joon Gi Reveals His True Intentions To Moon Chae Won In “Flower Of Evil” Posters tvN’s upcoming Wednesday-Thursday drama “Flower of Evil” has released its main posters! “Flower of Evil” surrounds the shocking question, “What if your husband, someone you’ve loved for 14 years, is suspected of being a serial killer?” The drama will tell the story of Baek Hee Sung (Lee Joon Gi), a man who hides his past and pretends to love his wife Cha Ji Won (Moon Chae Won). Cha Ji Won is a detective who begins to grow suspicious of him, and they find themselves standing in front of a truth they don’t wish to face. The two posters are similar yet strikingly different. The romantic version shows the silhouettes of the Baek Hee Sung and Cha Ji Won as they look into each other’s eyes, their expressions hidden by the sunlight that pours in through the window. Their hands naturally caress each other, as expected by a couple that has been married for 14 years. However, all is not what it appears to be. In the suspense version of the poster, their faces can be clearly seen, and their expressions are not that of love, but of betrayal. Baek Hee Sung’s glare gives the impression that something he’s been hiding was exposed, and Cha Ji Won looks back at him with uncertain, frightened eyes. Baek Hee Sung’s clothes and arms are splattered with blood marks, while the red light that engulfs them is reminiscent of red police lights, adding to the dangerous atmosphere. The text on the posters read, “The man who pretended to love, the woman who even loved the danger.” The drama stars Lee Joon Gi, Moon Chae Won, Jang Hee Jin, and Seo Hyun Woo and will be directed by Kim Chul Gyu, whose works include “Confession,” “Mother,” and “On the Way to the Airport.” The drama premieres this July and will be available on Viki. https://www.soompi.com/article/1404316wpp/lee-joon-gi-reveals-his-true-intentions-to-moon-chae-won-in-flower-of-evil-posters https://www.instagram.com/p/CA-VkRoJfJj/?igshid=azfiwfcx5c2i
The Age of Shadows is a handsomely mounted, lightly melodramatic South Korean period spy thriller, punctuated by superbly staged action set pieces. The Age of Shadows also has a chunky runtime, and is thus able to play the long game; its initial sparkily lightweight approach shifts around the midpoint into a murkier, weightier tone, building towards an emotionally rewarding finale. It’s good watching, is what I’m getting at. But you have to stick with it to get the full effect. The Age of Shadows manages to be both entertaining and also be about the upsetting business of terrorism, while successfully evading the bear trap of tastelessness. I say “terrorism” but it should always be acknowledged that the name for people using violence for political ends always depends which side you’re on; for a South Korean audience these terrorists would be Freedom Fighters.
Tumblr media
The Age of Shadows is set in Korea in the 1920s when it laboured under Japanese colonial rule (1910 – 1945). Over here in the UK there is a howling void in the heads of the hoi polloi like I, where the history of the East should be; we spend hours being taught about The Corn Laws but we only find out that Korea was once under Japanese rule by watching The Tiger (2015; awesome, watch it) or The Age of Shadows. Or it might just be me who is an idiot; either way don’t knock the educational content of movies about giant tigers or people in sharp threads planning to bomb an embassy. Anyway, after a few seconds research it looks like Japan, successfully eschewing military confrontation, slowly eroded Korea’s independence with some underhand shenanigans and a bunch of treaties from 1876 onward, tying the two closer and closer together, culminating in the Japan-Korea Treaty of 1910. This completed the annexation of Korea by Japan. Why would Korea sign such a thing, you may be understandably wondering. The ridiculous answer is they, or the then Korean regent Gojong, didn’t. Japan annexed Korea anyway. South Koreans have since dubbed this the Japanese Forced Occupation and The Dark Japanese Imperial Period. Korea was well miffed is the message I’m getting here. Hence the freedom fighters.
Tumblr media
Since The Age of Shadows is a South Korean movie it is understandably very much not on the side of the Japanese overseers. It is very much on the side of the Korean freedom fighters, who are all plucky, photogenic and brave. You could easily come away from The Age of Shadows believing that they are so awesome that, like The Punisher©®™, no innocents ever get caught in their bomb blasts or crossfire. It’s a measure of the movie’s subtlety that this isn’t true. It wants you to root for the freedom fighters so it does somewhat soft soap the collateral cost; but it can’t bring itself to lie, the bodies of the innocent are there if you watch closely. Innocent isn’t a term the movie extends to the Japanese, who are the bad guys here (and to be honest, Japan of the 1920’s, I’m thinking Korea has a point here).
Tumblr media
Surprisingly for an occupying force the Japanese are few in number. They seem to be operating on the Roman Empire model - where you go in, take a place over, and use the locals to police themselves; with the subjugating force occupying the upper echelons and running the martial apparatus. It’s a good model; you can cover a lot of ground with limited resources. But because you are outnumbered on the ground, you have to brutally dissuade any insurgents. Brutally, I stress. Hence all the Japanese characters are nasty pieces of work. There is a range of evil on offer though; the cartoony psychosis of number one goon Hashimoto (Uhm Tae-goo; cartoony, psychotic, good fun) or the quietly vile police chief Higashi (Shingo Tsurumi; supremely reptilian). Now, I wouldn’t take this as an indictment of the Japanese race as a whole, it’s more a reflection of the kinds of people who gravitate to the suppressive end of the police state. Basically, if they weren’t in uniform they’d be in prison. Every country has a rich crop of these sweethearts, not just Japan.
Tumblr media
That’s the backdrop against which the epic sweep of The Age of Shadows unfolds. It is a big movie; Korea vs Japan! Freedom versus vassalage! Authenticity vs Inauthenticity! Love vs Duty! But it is also simultaneously a small movie; it’s all about Lee Jung-chool (Song Kang-ho; fantastically sympathetic), a Korean and also a cop working under the Japanese. It’s about how he grows some self-respect, I guess. How he learns that everyone picks a side, even if they don’t realise it; so it’s best to make it a conscious decision. The Age of Shadows opens with a crucial confrontation between Lee Jung-chool and Kim Jang-ok (Park Hee-soon; athletically defiant), a resistance fighter and ex-classmate of lee Jung-chool. This is a  ferociously entertaining thrill of a night-time firefight with much rooftop running, and even a nifty bit of business with a severed toe; the kind of tossed off quirk Korean cinema does so well. Something is stirred within the laissez-faire breast of Lee Jung-chool, something which is positively agitated by his investigation into antique shop owner Kim Woo-jin (Gong Yoo; disarmingly pleasant), and a plot involving the transport of explosives by train. Kim-Woo Jin attempts to turn the copper, while Lee Jung Chool seeks to infiltrate the ambitious cell before their plans bear explosive fruit. But who is fooling who, and, ultimately, is someone fooling themselves?
Tumblr media
What follows is a cloak and dagger game of cat and mouse which reaches a climax mid-movie, with a tense and expertly staged train journey/traitor hunt with a hectically violent conclusion. After that the games being played extend beyond the cast to envelop the audience as the The Age of Shadows keeps its cards close to its chest, dealing out revelations at a steady pace throughout this darker, harder half of the movie. It’s discreetly smart film making, so high fives and bear hugs to Kim Jee-woon. But I think most credit is due for segueing so smoothly from the initial Boy’s Own escapades to the quite harrowing consequences of defiance. The Age of Shadows pulls its punches, no doubt, but it still admits the ugly cost of defiance to a quite remarkably unpleasant extent. Ultimately The Age of Shadows is a beautiful, finely acted, whip-smart movie which secretes within its enthralling entertainment a soupçon of brutal truth.
