A Giraffe Typist

It was done for a class project, but I find the giraffe very applicable in many situations. Namely a metaphor for busy writing all day.

37 min sketch focused more on pose than detail. I focus way too much on perfection from my sketches. Not a fan of the new pencil brush but it was good to switch it up from my go to brush. Sticking this here since I’m not trying to get my main flagged for innocent af doodle.

Keeping my hands busy last night, I sketched out a digital pencil and charcoal picture of Gard, or The Miniature Garden.

She is a character in my friend Robyn's game, and I have been excited to see what will happen next in her world. Gard is the personification of a pocket dimension, she's exceptionally stubborn, empathetic, and has an eidetic memory - being able to remember just about anything that she has heard before. And unfortunately, growing up as a science experiment she has a lot that she wishes she could forget. To the party she is in she is basically one sweet cinnamon roll, but she is very shy around people she hasn't met before, and generally untrusting of strangers. Though, in a lot of ways, she is lonely and touch starved after spending a long time in the world she was created in isolated in the lab she was created in.

I've gotten better at several things since the last time I sketched Gard, and maybe one day I will do a new colored image of her. But for just keeping my hands busy, I am pretty happy with how this turned out.

I have another picture I am working on, but I am going to have to wait to finish it until my new desk chair gets here. My old one broke and drawing with my goblin posture plus my sore behind from sitting in this hard wood dining chair does not make for good line art.

Behind-the-Scenes: Original Assignment & A Little of My Drawing and Career History

I originally drew this for a traditionally-focused introductory 2D animation class (in Spring 2021). It was one of two gesture drawings in a weekly drawing assignment where we fill six 8.5”x11” pages with drawings—two in the three categories: 1. gesture drawings, 2. still lifes and abstract drawings, and 3. background/scenery sketches.

I thought it was pretty rigorous, especially since up until 2020~2021, drawing was more of a hobby, while computer programming was my intended career from 2016 to 2019 (story for a more relevant time).

Self-Critiques

+ Pretty good build-up of pencil lines

+ Great shape language for Chuchu, especially her head

- Come up w/ more fitting shape language for Lulu & Momo

- Mostly unreadable Momo head; not too readable as a cat head

Simple anatomy studies to stop thinking too much. I love drawing characters so anatomy is a very useful thing.

Once again, trying to keep my hands busy in the middle of this massive art slump I find myself stuck in, I decided to do a pencil sketch of my Tiefling character, Anelace Sarin. She is a rogue, working as an assassin for her lord. I have done stats for her in both 'Dungeons and Dragons' and 'Fate: Core' before, she really she can be used in either system as an npcs when I run my games. Technically, Anelace is a succubus in Fate Core, which in that world is a homebrew take as a type of Tiefling. Anyway, it was a lot of fun to do her hair, as I sorta had to figure out just how that works while I was sketching her out.
