A Manga by Osamu Tezuka
While not the creator of manga (Japanese comic books) by any means, Osamu Tezuka can definitely be seen as one of the forefathers of the genre, and perhaps the person that made it what it has been for the last eighty or so years. Even anime, animation from Japan, can trace its popularity back to the works of Tezuka. In recent years, a lot of western manga publishers have…
Kodansha Launching K Manga Japanese Comics Platform in U.S.
by Patrick Frater
Leading Japanese publisher, Kodansha is to launch an online comic book distribution service from May. Titled K Manga, the operation will go live in May and be exclusive to readers in the U.S.
The company is publisher of many of the best-known manga titles in history including “Attack on Titan” and “Ghost in the Shell.” These and some 400 others will be available at the launch of the serialization platform.
The roster includes approximately 70 titles of ongoing manga currently in serialization across a multitude of genres including action, thriller, isekai (speculative fiction), romance, and fantasy. Users will have access to K Manga’s library and will be able to read limited chapters of some manga free of charge.
“K Manga will endeavor to release the latest chapters of K Manga original serialized manga and weekly and monthly magazines of Kodansha containing a collection of different manga titles simultaneously in the U.S and Japan, making the latest stories available earlier than any other competing U.S. services,” the company said.
Being a Tezuka fan and actually trying to own any of his manga in the states is so fucking hard like look at this preorder date next to the actual release date
Hello tumblr platform! I have been MIA for a little bit but I am back. I’m struggling with my mental health these last few weeks after losing a loved one, I wanted to turn that energy of sorrow and pain into something beautiful and fun. So I created a coloring book to heal a part of my inner child that is broken beyond measure. Now, my coloring book isn’t a master piece by any means but I love all 25 pages of it with my whole heart! It is a coloring book for Giraffe Lovers. Giraffes have always been my favorite animal and brought me happiness through every walk of my life so I wanted to share that with all of you. Please don’t feel obligated to buy it that’s not my intention for this post, I just wanted to share a part of my heart with all of you. Some of the pages are on the back of the book cover and I really hope you enjoy them!
Its been a week or something since I started reading Shounen Note (middle school choir manga), and I'm almost finished. Its not a long series (30 Ch), but it has taken me longer than I expected to finish it. I think the topic is interesting, but the way it's told didn't particularly grab me like some other manga I've read. I will say though, that I really like the art work. The linework is really good (its an older manga so it's still drawn traditionally, and for me it gives a different vibe than some recent digitally drawn series imo), and I really how the mangaka illustrates the atmosphere around the characters
if i were more inclined and had the skillset to do more lore centric abstract art you could get mist blorbo groveling on their knees crying about idk their identity crisis or something instead you get Meow Meow gas station attendant everyday
Togashi-sensei has been updating his X account with some old doodles and unpublished genko (manuscripts) from different works. This time, he posted those amazing raw manuscripts from Yu Yu Hakusho.
He explained that in the case of color manuscripts, the color was only applied to the copies, so it's thrilling he shared the original one, his line art is so beautiful! By the way, the color printing is from chapter 103, released in Weekly Shounen Jump magazine in 1993.
Anime's Popularity Helps Japanese Publishers Navigate Shift to Digitalization
Anime and light novels pair well with digital visuals, says expert Atsuo Nakayama. And Japanese publishers have the largest number of series for all ages.
The publishing industry has been in a recession for a long time. But with the popularity of anime as a tailwind, sales by major Japanese publishers are seeing a promising comeback. Demand for Entertainment at home has risen as people hole up due to COVID-19. So digital and foreign market sales have grown rapidly.
For Japanese publishers that deal with comics and light novels — content which is easily digitized — the shift toward digitalization has been paying off.
Records Set by Powerhouse Japanese Publishers
KADOKAWA published its consolidated financial statement for March 2022 in May, showing sales of ¥221.2 billion JPY ($1.65 billion USD). Its results were 5.4% higher than the previous accounting period. Moreover, KADOKAWA increased its operating profits to ¥18.5 billion JPY ($138 million USD), a 35.9% increase from the previous period. Both are the highest they have ever been.
In addition to popular comics and light novel series, the publishers saw favorable sales in children's books. And the number of physical copies of books sold overseas increased as well.
KADOKAWA's online digital book site BOOK☆WALKER saw a rise in paying users not only in Japan but also in Taiwan and English-speaking countries. The Japanese publisher also had significant success in its gaming industry.

lesser known megaten spin-offs are weird: ddsat edition
ok i’ve always wanted to talk about the long history of megaten spin-offs, since not only are a ton of them japanese-exclusive and on mobile phones, there’s quite a few bits of supplementary reading.
when it comes to digital devil saga, it’s actually a bit more straightforward than other supplementary material for older atlus titles, as the plots follow events pre-dds or during dds, with quantum being a retelling based on some of the original ideas for the duology that never saw the light of day.
but i’ve straight up never heard of this one and only today discovered its existence while browsing tags on a fairly abandoned blog. in fact… i don’t know if anyone knows about it. i’ve seen some of the short stories like dogdays mentioned in the past but never this one.
i’m assuming this is mostly because it’s a separate story set in universe, is a one shot, and wasn’t written by yu godai.
this is digital devil saga: avatar turner: shinen no matou (“tower of the abyss”) written by moheji yamasaki.
i can’t find a translation of this and i’m not willing to trust ai to do the translating, and there are barely any scans out there. the only ones i could find were from the post i found the manga through, but the account is deactivated. (i reblogged it so here’s some of the scans.) congrats lemniscation for being one of maybe 5 people who know about this, i salute you and hope you are well wherever you are.
and yes the atma avatars are original designs not seen anywhere else, or so i can assume. maybe there’s a mystical other spin off that uses them. idk.
now i know fandom wikis tend to have varying levels of accuracy, but there is a page on the megami tensei fandom wiki and some info is better than none. the manga was apparently published in 2005 and there is one named character listed on the wiki. one.
give it up for kyle, the goofy blue haired dude on the cover. that’s our protagonist. the end.
yeah there’s nothing else i could find. at least the mobile game has a basic plot outline and hey it even details how sheffield’s the final boss yay????
there’s a lot of untranslated stuff from around this time period, such as the entirety of the dsrk lite novel, but this one stands out because of just how different it is. i’m not surprised at the lack of information—being japan exclusive in the early-mid-2000s back when a niche american audience was already at the most niche it could get does it no favors, but if anyone does have scans or links to scans, translated or not, please share them because this is actually cool.
