Bosch stype frescos‚ rich colourful tableaux‚ dripping gothic atmosphere.. on vibes alone this is a real winner#Lee is high in the credits of course but only really has an extended cameo (this being during his sojourn to europe to escape Hammer for a#while‚ only to end up making even cheaper Hammer alikes for the Germans and Italians). the plot is all Corman Poe cycle‚ loosely inspired#by the works of Poe‚ but with its own nearly wholesome adventuring bent. benefits from having genuinely likeable and compelling characters#upfront (Medar is a consistent scene stealer as a highway robber who gets unwillingly pulled into the gothic shenanigans and becomes a#reluctant heroic accomplice). some startling imagery and a few choice pearls of dialogue too. much better than it would look on paper#definitely one of the better examples of euro schlock from this era‚ and among the best Lee was involved in

My rating: 6/10
German made (but English language) faux-Hammer horror, featuring lots of dodgy writing, dodgy acting and dodgy effects, plus Christopher Lee as the villain (though he's dead for most of it, so it's just barely more than a cameo) and some rather funky tunes by Peter Thomas. Not great, but occasionally amusing and quite watchable.

In Die Schlangengrube und das Pendel wird ein Graf wegen Mordes an zwölf Jungfrauen öffentlich gevierteilt. Doch ihm gelingt die Rückkehr.
Inhalt von Die Schlangengrube und das Pendel
Graf Regula will ein Elixier entwickeln, das ihm zu ewigem Leben verhelfen soll. Dazu benötigt er das Blut von 13 Jungfrauen; auf seinem Schloss Andomai hat er bereits zwölf gefoltert und getötet. Nachdem der 13. Jungfrau die Flucht gelungen ist, wird der Graf gefasst. Richter Reinhard von Marienberg verkündet das Urteil: Tod durch Vierteilen. Vor der Vollstreckung prophezeit der Graf seine Rache an dem Richter und dessen Familie.
35 Jahre später erhalten Roger Mont Elise und Baroness Lilian von Brabant durch einen einbeinigen Moritatensänger, der bei Graf Regulas Hinrichtung zugegen war, eine Einladung auf das Schloss. Roger soll dort mehr über seine Vergangenheit erfahren, denn er ist ein Findelkind und kennt daher seine Herkunft nicht, die Baroness werde erwartet, um das Erbe ihrer verstorbenen Mutter anzutreten.
Sie sollen am Karfreitag auf Andomai eintreffen. Unterschrieben ist die Einladung von einem gewissen Graf Regula...
