Commencement 2023
In this post, I’m excited to share some of my photos from commencement! After a bit of a rainy day prior (Saturday), we were fortunate enough to have beautiful weather for commencement itself (Sunday). As shared in my last post, during the Ivy Day ceremony I’d been awarded two engineering awards and had been called up to pick up a special gold tassel and cord for graduating summa cum laude (the highest tier of Latin honors). Given these honors, it had somehow gotten in my head that Ivy Day would be bigger for me than commencement itself as I personally took more pride in these individual honors. Please know that I in no way mean to undermine the accomplishment that is graduating from college, particularly for those who are the first in their families to do so! I’ll be the first to admit that I perhaps took graduating from college a bit for granted as I’ve excelled academically for as long as I can remember, technically had the requisite credits to graduate a year ago, and have two college-educated parents (one who holds a graduate degree from an Ivy League school). This is not to say that college was easy for me as I’ve had to work extremely hard over the last four years. With all of that being said, other than being a bit long commencement was an amazing experience.
Tumblr media
Commencement morning began with us lining up (grouped by house and within our house ordered alphabetically by last name). After a long while of waiting, we finally processed into the quad itself. Our commencement speaker was Reshma Saujani who is the founder of Girls Who Code. As a computer science major and future software engineer, I was sort of hoping she’d touch on technology in her speech. In retrospect, it makes sense that she didn’t as Smith is a liberal arts school and her formal education isn’t in STEM. With all that said did find her speech to be both interesting and inspiring. It was also fitting that she talked about bicycles as my big graduation gift is a new bike! Not sure if this link will work in the future, but here’s the full commencement webcast.
Tumblr media
As for the official conferring of degrees, it was actually so much fun in large part because I was graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Science and Computer Science. (Note that sadly, majors aren’t listed on Smith diplomas unless a student writes an honors thesis that earns them departmental honors). This degree meant two things for commencement. First, as engineering is Smith’s only Bachelor of Science, we were technically conferred our degrees separately from and before our peers (who were earning Bachelor of Arts degrees). Not that the order itself matters (graduate students were before us anyways), but having this moment with my fellow engineerings was absolutely incredible. Second, instead of flipping our tassels from the right side of our caps to the left side we removed our caps entirely and replaced them with our hard hats! If interested, you can check out this post about the celebration of engineering seniors during which we received our hard hats.
Tumblr media
Leading up to commencement itself I was a bit conflicted about which of the hats to wear across the stage. On one hand, the mortar board represented graduating college and naturally highlighted my accomplishment of graduating summa cum laude. On the other hand, the hardhat was unique and represented all of my hard work to earn an engineering degree. Ultimately, I opted for the hard hat and during the ceremony itself decided to tie my gold tassel onto the left side. Around my neck, in addition to my gold cord, I wore a white Society of Women Engineers (SWE) stole, and a bright blue cord for ResLife.
Tumblr media
Despite having a set order (so they could read out the correct name), we were handed a completely random diploma. Thus, following the main ceremony Smith has this thing called the diploma circle to redistribute the diplomas. I really didn’t like this part as I was at this point quite drained and quickly crashing following the excitement of officially graduating. Additionally, as Washburn is at the end of the alphabet I got to the diploma circle on the later side which made getting into the actual circle more difficult. Fortunately, as pictured above, I did ultimately get my diploma!

Full Stack Developer Responsibilities
Tumblr media
As a full stack developer, you are expected to know a wide variety of technologies. It is necessary to have the right attitude and knowledge to perform well in this role. It is also important to have a wide knowledge base so that you can multitask efficiently. You can expect to learn various programming languages, such as Java, Angular, and others.
Angular
A Full Stack Developer (FSD) is an experienced web developer who is able to work on both the frontend and backend of an application. He or she will have expertise in database management, system engineering, and architectural design. The full-stack developer can turn ideas into finished products and will work with a variety of languages, frameworks, and tools.
The Full Stack Developer should have experience with a variety of technologies, including the Java suite, and many common web technologies. Java has been around for over two decades, and it is a powerful programming language. Many developers are pursuing the full-stack developer path, as it allows for faster development and cost-efficiency.
Java
Full stack Java developers are responsible for many different areas of software development. Their responsibilities include the use of different technologies and keeping up with the latest trends. They are also expected to interact with various stakeholders, including design and business analysts, in order to develop a full-fledged software system. They are often part of a project team of four to six developers, and may be required to work on multiple projects at once. Their typical schedule is forty hours a week, though they may be required to work overtime to meet deadlines.
A full stack Java developer must have a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field. They must also have extensive experience in web development, including HTML and Javascript. These technologies allow developers to develop an aesthetically pleasing and functional interface for users. They should also have some experience with SQL, which can help them better understand back-end components. Certifications in these technologies can lead to numerous career opportunities.
Angular 2
Angular developers are responsible for the development of high-performance software applications, and they also have responsibilities when it comes to unit testing and working with backend developers. They should be able to work with a variety of technologies and have a thorough knowledge of how to access APIs and external data sources to ensure their code is error-free and compliant with quality standards.
Angular is a cross-platform framework that is designed to create web and mobile applications. Its flexibility means that it can be used for development on both Android and iOS devices. The main task of an Angular developer is to build dynamic single-page applications, and this framework gives them the tools they need to do so.
Angular 3
In the last 3 years, the demand for full stack web developers has increased globally. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, job vacancies for this job type are expected to grow at a steady rate of 26% over the next five years. In the United States, there will be more than 1,185,700 such vacancies. The demand for this job has risen largely because of the development of efficient technologies. As a result, the demand for full stack developers who are proficient in JavaScript has increased dramatically.
Full stack developers have a wide range of responsibilities. They must be able to translate software requirements into working solutions and adhere to the best practices for application development. Full stack developers will also take part in development processes such as release planning, sprint testing, and retrospectives.
React
A Full Stack developer works on both the frontend and backend of the application. This position requires high-level expertise in both languages and the ability to manage the software development life cycle. The job also requires experience writing and debugging code to meet user requirements. This position also requires a solid understanding of computer science, mathematics, and software engineering.
Full Stack developers are responsible for ensuring the integrity and compatibility of the app, from its design to implementation and deployment. Their expertise covers a variety of tasks, including designing user interaction in web pages, building servers and databases, and ensuring that the application is cross-platform and works with various mobile devices. To be successful, a Full Stack Developer must be meticulous and have an eye for detail.
React Native
In React Native, a full-stack developer is responsible for both the server-side and client-side parts of the app. This requires experience with HTML, CSS, and JS on the front-end, and knowledge of a back-end framework, such as NodeJS.
Full-stack developers are responsible for building robust mobile applications that are fast and responsive. They also coordinate with other team members to ensure a cohesive product development process. They must possess a high degree of commitment to perfection, be able to identify performance bottlenecks, and be able to write automated tests.
Angular 4
Full stack developers have a variety of responsibilities. Some are responsible for building apps and services that interact with Angular. Others focus on creating a specific part of the app, such as a front end component. Regardless of the responsibilities of an Angular 4 developer, there are a number of tools and techniques used to create effective applications.
While many developers only focus on one or two areas of development, full stack developers are expected to be knowledgeable about several different technologies. They must have working knowledge of at least one backend language and one frontend language. They are also expected to have basic knowledge of every component that is needed to create a modern application. In this way, they are closer to generalists than specialists.

Hey I wanted to fuck around and ramble about how I specifically headcanon and like to portray Jack and Maddie career-wise for my fanfics/personal take on the DP canon.
So to start; I headcanon Maddie as having a masters in electrical engineering and Jack as having a PhD in Thanatology (the scientific study of death and the practices associated with it), though he has a bachelor's degree in mortuary science while also having a funeral director’s license.
Why these? Because I absolutely see Maddie as the builder and thinker, the one who can build things, and Jack as the theorist who knows everything there is to know about ghosts. I picked Thanatology because it was as close as I could find to studying ghosts in an actual applied scientific sense, but I liked the mortuary science because it felt like a good accompaniment. I originally had mortuary sciences as his PhD (if you’ve heard me talk about this before), but I found out that I was actually a big dumb because in the US, you cannot get a PhD in mortuary sciences ihsofsa so I did research for an alternative.
So how do their jobs work? Well, I think it's approached in a very academic-y sense. While I kind of play with it loosely based on the specific fanfiction, I generally say that their job is a sorta combination of any number of the following:
Research grants to study ghosts, from both the government and just private companies
Writing books/textbooks revolved around ghosts (like ectobiology, ghost hunting, etc)
Contract ghost hunting work (like being paid to get rid of ghosts from private residents/buildings)
Income from ghost invention patents (think their Fenton weapons and things like the Fenton thermos)
They do non-ghost research and inventing as well (since they seem to custom build their own computers and other various technologies, and even just things like the Specter Speeder can be marketed to a non-ghost hunting audience like the military, and Jazz implied in GNO that Maddie has a lot of inventions outside of Jack that she works on)
Paid to teach/give lectures or make appearances at seminars, conventions or speak at certain events
Since Jack in this is licensed funeral director, he also occasionally works with a funeral home, and sometimes I even headcanon that Jack and Maddie used to own a funeral home before they got the grant/funding to build their ghost portal (which I touch on a little later!)
Jack teaches part time at a local community college/university, teaching normally one or two classes here but sometimes more, and sometimes even as Casper High teaching ghost 101 safety
Maddie is also a licensed electrician that does occasional work related to that
And this is kind of where you may be asking: wait, aren't they kind of a joke? Why are you giving them all this credit?
Well, honestly, I really like to think of the Fentons as being actually fairly well respected academically and by fellow ghost hunters. There's a lot of scientists that you'll basically learn are real Weirdos, but that doesn't distract from the fact that they are incredibly smart people who made amazing breakthroughs.
To me, I headcanon Jack as being autistic, and that ghosts and the paranormal is a special interest in which he's actually an incredibly well respected scientist, who has the most accurate (as far as the paranormal studies scientific community knows) information and knowledge about ghosts. He's been writing and studying it for twenty years, and arguably, essentially proved that ghosts exists because of his ghost portal and living in Amity Park, where ghost activity boomed. While there's canon evidence dedicated to him being made fun of in Million Dollar Ghost, I personally like to think of this as more of other ghost hunters just kind of seeing how Awkward and ridiculous he can be socially. We also hear about Danny and Jazz dunking on them, but I think this comes more from two teenagers being embarrassed about their oddball parents.
I definitely picture the Fentons as still being the town weirdos because well. You see their oddballness every day. But most ectobiologists would only see Jack when he's presenting and read his work, where I imagine he's presented as a bit less goofy and more serious. Because it's a chance for him to essentially ramble on about his special interest and area of expertise without interruption to an incredibly eager audience that's going to be asking questions and wanting his opinions. To me, Jack definitely seems like the person who you don't really think about how odd he kinda is (purely because of masking and it just not really coming up) until you're really with him 1v1 outside of these of these conventions/lectures/classroom environments.
I don’t totally see Maddie teaching, because while I’m definitely picturing her here as being a very smart mind that would likely also be a good teacher; the specific reasoning why I say Jack would be the ones that does the teaching part time is because it’s literally perfect for him. It's an excuse for him to trap 25+ people in a room on a regular basis to listen to him about ghosts. He'd absolutely just one of those easy A teachers, where if you just show up and listen to him babble about ghosts for 1-3 hours and turn in the homework (he gives no tests, midterm/finals or quizzes), you get your easy A. It’s the similar concept with the seminars and guest lecture things; Jack is just much more enthusiastic and would want that solo speaking time, and Maddie knows how much it means to him, so I feel like she would let him have this.
Maddie herself, I feel liker her heart rests more in just the general inventing and building side of it. While she has an interest in ghosts, this also seems to mostly enjoy the physical side of inventing. I say this mostly because, again, in GNO, Maddie has a whole bunch of inventions that she’s working on outside of things she builds/helps Jack build. To me, this straight up personal invention projects, even though they’re still ghost based, tells me that her heart and passion seems to lie within engineering and not necessarily too much in the way of ghost theory.
The way his and Maddie's relationship works to me is that Jack knows more of the ghost related information and he relays this to Maddie for her to build what they need. For example, he'll tell her “this is what the Ghost Zone is like, these are the dangers, this is what we need to survive, etc” and Maddie will have the knowledge to design the Specter Speeder, and they build it together with Maddie being the primary leader and troubleshooter.
However, Maddie has the education and license to do the electrical work and knows how to properly build and submit the patents. Meanwhile, Jack will eventually do all the research and write and publish the book detailing what they learned about the Ghost Zone. Repeat the process with ghost weapons and other such inventions.
I like to think that Jack and Maddie were essentially going through the process of getting the huge government grant they'd need to build the actual ghost portal, which took a lot of prior research, convincing, pleas for money and getting the city permission and code permits to get the money and permission building it, hence the like 20 year gap between the prototype portal and the final portal. Especially since they obviously started a family during that time too.

New job - Part one
It took a while but I wrote the rest of new job. While I was doing so I thought it would be fun to make different parts of it. Again thank you so much for liking the preview. I hope you enjoy the story as well :)
My writing might not be that good as I wrote most of it at night. Haven’t done a proper check up on my grammar (etc) yet. I was too excited about posting it sooo yeah...  I promise I will update the story if/when needed :)
The part of the preview will still be in here, I rewrote a couple of parts of it so you might want to take a look at it again.
Marcus Moreno x Reader
warnings: none
Tumblr media
It's First day at your new job. You have been working so hard to get a position at mission control. Finally that day came. You finally got that promotion. Happy and proud to be there you walked into the office.
Everything seemed so new and strange. Everyone around you seemed very busy with whatever they were doing. Nobody seemed to notice you, except for Ms. Granada.
“Ah there you are.” She walked alongside you.
“I have a very important job for you. Our satellite sensors have gone down. We need someone who can redirect remaining power to those sensors so we can use the satellites again”
“Yes, Ma’am”
She directed you toward a computer, with a big smile.
“Welcome to the team and if you would like something to drink, the kitchen is right there.” she pointed down the hallway. You weren't quite sure to which room she was pointing but you would figure it out.
“Thank you” Ms. Granada left you to it. You started up the programm and started to decipher the codes in front of you.
You granduated from MIT with a degree in electrical engineering and computer science. Getting the sensors back up again shouldn't be that big of a problem but It was. The satellite didn't seem to respond. It puzzled you. That moment made you realise it would be a long day. If this wasn't going to work out one of the Heroics would have to go up there and fix it.
During the day you thought it would be nice to get acquainted with your colleagues. From what you have seen, your colleague’s seemed nice. They only didn't  seem that social.
You tried starting up a conversation with the women next to you but she just gave you a nasty glare.
After all the troubles the satellite gave you,  you decided you needed a cup of coffee.
One of the other workers at mission control was a step ahead. Marcus Moreno, who just got himself a cup of coffee bumped into you. Spilling his coffee all over you.
You jumped away out of reflexes. “Shit”
“I didn’t mean to… I am so sorry….” Marcus stood there in shock.
“It’s okay. Really”
He was looking all around to see if he could find a towel or some paper.
He studied you. He never saw you before. So you must me the new girl that Ms. Granada told him about.
“You must be the new girl?” He asked smiling at you.
You looked at him, realizing he was cute. It made you blush.
“Yes. That is me. Great start of the first day, am I right?”
You stared at your soaking wet, coffee stained blouse and laughed.
“Perfect”
“I am so sorry” Marcus repeated. He felt so guilty. He didn’t mean to ruin your day. He pouted at the sight of the stain.
“Don’t worry. I’ll just go freshen up in the bathroom”
“I really didn’t mean to ruin your first day” he said. He hesitated for a moment “how can I make this up to you?”
“You don’t have to. It could happen to anybody.” You said. Focused on the stain on your shirt.
Marcus smiled. He thought you were charming and adorable and you seemed like you needed a friend.
“What if I want to make it up? Couldn’t hurt to make some friends around here”
You smiled at him. You did need a friend, as no one else seemed to want to have a conversation with you.
“Okay. Seems fair. Not like anyone else reached out to me today.” You both looked around to all the faces staring at their computers. Marcus’ smile grew wider. This happened to him as well the first day in the office. He thought he would be welcomed, mostly because he was part of the heroes. No one looked up when he first arrived at his desk. It took a while to get a conversation out of them. It was all too recognizable for him. He was glad he reached out to you. He definitely wanted to give you a better experience than he had and besides all that, you were cute.
“Don’t mind them. They are practically computers. They don’t concern themselves with socializing as long as they can do their job.”
“ah” you nod your head as you let a little smile appear creating dimples. It made you look more beautifu. It brightened up Marcus' day. Marcus realized what he could do. He put his hand his pocket pulling out a piece of paper that looked like some sort of business card. He handed it to you.
“This is my number. Whenever you feel like it, just give me a call.”
You gave him another one of your bright smiles as you took the piece of paper from him. You felt your cheeks go red. Mostly because you were embarrassed by the stains. Which were made by the nicest and most handsome coworker around.
“I sure will. Maybe we could go out for coffee. You know. Seems perfect for the situation” you said pointing at your clothes.
Marcus laughed “Coffee it is”
 ------- -------- -------- --------
Marcus came home from his long day of work. He was smiling from ear to ear.
“Hello, Missy. How was your day?” He gave her a kiss on the head. Missy noticed the mood change in her dad. She hadn’t seen him this happy in quite a long time.
“you’re in a good mood”
“Am I not allowed to be happy?”
“I didn’t say that but you usually are not like this”
Marcus just chuckled at his daughter's observant comment.
"No, usually I am as miserable as you" he teased.
Missy sticked out her tongue, schronching her nose. It was adorable when she did so. It reminded Marcus of his wife. Missy looked like her, a lot. Especially when she made those faces. The thought of her captured him in a moment of sadness. He missed her so much. He was still even wearing his wedding ring. He hadn't dared to take it off. It didn't feel right. At least not yet. Marcus got so caught up in his daydream that Missy had to snap him out of it.
"Dad?"
Marcus turned his head toward her still absent, lost in thought.
"Why are you so happy? Did you meet someone? Are they from work? What is her name? Is she pretty?" Marcus chuckled at Missy's never ending questions
"Missy…. Missy.. please, sweetie. I just had a good day at work. Yes I met a new colleague but it is nothing like that, she is a friend"
Missy started smiling as bright as the sun. She hadn't seen her father this happy in quite a long time. Of course she didn't want anyone to replace her mother but no one could and her father deserved love. Even she knew that it would be what her mother would have wanted. This women he met, this could be his match.
"So, you did meet someone!" Her excitement couldn't be concealed.
Marcus tried to avoid the topic at all cost.
"What are we going to eat? I am starving and I am in the mood for some pizza" he said with a forced smile.
"Don't avoid the topic. Tell me about her. I want to know if she is right for you"
Marcus shook his head. "My little guardian angel" he said as he planted another kiss on her head. "I have better plan. I order some Pizza and you go make your homework in the meantime"
"only if you tell me about your work 'friend'"
"Missy" Marcus gave her a serious warning look.
Missy sighed "alright ,alright"
She stood up from the kitchen chair and walked to her room. Marcus started dialing the number so he could order the pizza.
"Hello, I would like to place a order for a…" Marcus couldn't even finish his sentence before Missy's head appeared around the corner shouting "with extra cheese!".
Marcus gave her a thumbs up. "I would like to order a pizza with extra cheese, please"
Within the hour the pizza was delivered. They ate their pizza in front of their TV watching a movie they both agreed watching. Even though it was their favourite movie to watch they both were somewhere is with their thoughts. Missy daydreaming about Marcus and this mystery women. She wondered how she could open up her dad.
And well Marcus was thinking about you…. Still smiling at your meeting earlier that they. You were cute and pretty, even with a coffee stain on your shirt. He liked you but he wasn't ready yet to get into a relationship. At least he thought he wasn't. It all felt too soon after what happened with his wife. He didn't think that love would come back to him… that he was capable of loving again. No, it felt wrong. It would be like cheating he thought. A friendship with you seemed innocent enough for the time being. He'll see where it will go from there.
He just couldn't think of romance just yet. The good thing about this situation was that Missy was excited about something again. It hurt his heart to see his little girl unhappy.
---------- ----------- ------------
That Friday
Marcus was fidigting with his wedding ring, he hadn’t dared to take it off.
He was actually quite nervous.
You texted him that night, the same day he gave you the number.
Missy fell asleep on the couch while they were watching the movie. Missy should've gone to bed earlier because it was a school night but they had a cheat day from time to time where she could stay up later. Marcus lifted Missy up from the couch and carried her toward her bed, tucking her in. Marcus felt the muscles in his back tighten up as he did so. He wasn’t as young as he used to be, carrying her wasn’t as good of an idea than he thought it would be. He watched her sleep for a while. She looked so peaceful and she was smiling. He wondered what she was dreaming about. He thought it would be best to leave her be. He gave her a kiss on the head and left the room.
He let out a big sigh as he returned to the living room, seeing the mess in front of him that he still had to clean up. He remembered a time when he didn't just have to do this on his own. Having his wife help him clean up at night before they went to bed. He really missed that time.
As he returned the dirty dishes to the kitchen he noticed his phone light up that was lying on the kitchen table. Instead of keeping up with his chores he decided to see who was sending him messages. It was an unknown number. Part of him was hoping it was you. He opened his phone and clicked on the messages. He was right. It was you. He smiled. He sat himself down at the table reading your text messages and responding to them. He texted with you for hours until he realized the time. It was almost 2 am in the morning. He looked at the dirty dishes in the kitchen sink. He decided he would do them in the morning. Just that moment when he looked down at his phone again he noticed you asked if he wanted to go out and grab coffee this Friday. He mentioned it was his day off in one of his texts. So it was yours. Marcus agreed to meet up with you. There was a great coffee place around the corner of where he lived. He knew it would be a great place to meet up.
He brought Missy to school that morning and went straight up to the coffee shop. He was early so you weren't there yet. He decided to grab a table to wait for you.

tl;dr political rant post:
it had been my goal from 12 years old to do an arts degree in philosophy (yes what a nerd- thanks to my dad playing a Great Courses philosophy dvd one morning in 2007 and my dad always taking me to the botanic gardens/the uni some weekends).
i graduated from my arts degree in 2018, with a major in english and a minor in philosophy. i was so, so lucky to even get into my communications & media degree (at first i was originally going to do marketing communications, advertising & PR)... but i realised that i was not made for business subjects- despite my mark101 tutor telling me she thought i had knack for marketing- something under this policy that i wouldn’t undertake due to the price hike for commerce/business degrees. nor was i made for a media degree. so i changed to arts & humanities.
although under this atrocious policy, english subjects are made “cheaper”- why on fucking should the rest of someone’s arts/humanities degree be so much more expensive, all depending on the fields they choose???? so you’re telling me, if i was instead to enter undergrad this year to do my english degree... that my english major would be subsidised, but my philosophy minor would be at double the cost (along with the few first year business and communications&media subjects i did), unless i forced myself to pick maths or science subjects that i would most definitely fail, no matter how much work i’d put into them??? or there’s languages- but much like maths/science- there’s the problem with my handwriting that stopped me trying french and even japanese (ironically, since it’s know for its ~painstakingly neat and orderly~ script- but my handwriting is still messy, disorderly and confusing asf).
*please note that most of this next section is just me being highly spurious and cynical. it’d probably work out fine*
but you’re also telling me that under this policy that i’d also probably have to forego my reasonable adjustments in those subjects (yes i still have trouble with my handwriting to this day) mostly because a lot of software still won’t let you write out maths problems properly or i’d have to spend twice as long trying to get a graph to work in excel or idek matlab (please teach me maths nerds)???? and most maths working out is probably better handwritten or whatever??? and that’s besides the point that i still can’t use excel at all 😂.
so with these classes then, would i be battling from day one of first year with professors to let me use a computer during exam periods (unless of course they use online/take home exam methods like philosophy)???? probably (im being very suspicious here because i don’t know how science/maths etc faculties work).
although i did get this once with one particular english professor; who used the excuse that he didn’t know how to set a computer up for exams because he had been on “sabatical for 4 years” or whatever and so “didn’t know the policies anymore”.... so then according to him it was apparently “the students job to do it.... especially since you’re in third year, miss williams”..... however, i was promptly then told by EVERY uni offical that i approached for help to do it for me.... and my other professors across my course that had done it for me, that it was in fact the PROFESSORS job/responsibility to set it up, and not the student’s??? like. help your students fuckwit professor grant??? honestly. anyway. aside from my personal struggles in the english department: let’s proceed. (this was a real incident btw).
would i be at a significant disadvantage to other students by not being able to use a computer during maths exams or science exams because of the drawing of diagrams and graphs and “showing your working”???? hell yes. would i want the professors in that department to probably condescendingly telling me all the time to “present my work neater and more precisely”? FUCK NO. it’s exactly why i avoided every maths and science subject in undergrad- even including the astronomy subject that i wanted to do- because it also meant that fellow students had to read my handwriting for practicals etc as well, that i wasn’t entirely keen on either. but i did not need the harsh reminders of “be more precise and infallible in your work presentation” that i’d had at school constantly for 11 years of maths lessons; affecting my mental health and performance in a subject during a uni semester.
moreover, that’s besides the fact that i’d flat out fail the “year 12 band 4 maths” requirements- unless they want to waive those- for first year maths/science subjects (at least basing it on my local uni).... considering that i actually skipped out on maths completely in year 12 by doing a TVET/tafe/technical college course in live theatre, production and events (which no surprises here, actually included maths anyway 😅).
because, fuck. is ANYONE seeing a trend in my study choices here? hell, i almost did a commerce/business dual degree with a tafe diploma in event management for crying out fucking loud. and you’re telling me that’s also doubled in price?? it’s obvious that i was interested in the arts & humanities and business subjects from the get-go. but under this policy- i’d be charged double for having my interest in event management, instead of say, biology (which is a subject that if it weren’t for mark scaling in my final hsc exam- i would have failed completely)??? utterly ridiculous.
i even contemplated doing a double degree with law at one point (or doing a legal studies major/minor- which is now a course at my local uni, but was not while i was there). however, law course fees have also doubled under this new policy. leaving that out of reach for me, despite that a double degree with law was out of reach for me anyway..... since my mark average was 65% and not at least 75% lol. but as if those marks averages will actually matter under this new policy.
under this bullshit policy, i’d be forced to take science/maths or even teaching (another field i had to avoid, since people can’t read my writing on a whiteboard from a distance half the time either.... besides the fact that i’m not really the ~teacher type~) subjects- all so that my degree price overall will be ”reduced”..... meaning that i would have to trade out my philosophy minor for something in maths/teaching/science (or maybe creative arts- since those fees stayed the same roughly)... instead of sticking to what i was good at: philosophy and other humanities/social science fields like sociology and history????
i understand that many people will snub me with saying “oh why did you even BOTHER going to uni if you were THAT indecisive about what you wanted to do?” which is something i’ve seen many older people saying on posts about this policy. but hell, i was 19 FUCKING YEARS OLD WHEN I STARTED UNI, FOR GODS SAKE. OF COURSE I WAS GOING TO BE FUCKING INDECISIVE ABOUT MY DIRECTION IN LIFE! because, newsflash fuckwits: not everyone has a defined career goal at 19. hell, i still don’t have one at almost 25..... since i’ll admit here, that i flunked out of my postgrad library course.... because i realised that i simply couldn’t cope with learning simple HTML, CSS and javascript coding for website design & user experience design 😂 (again help me computer wiz friends). yes, believe it or not, librarians have to know that today. and most people think that it’s just all about books (okay that was me, but i was wrong). also, if you’re wondering: postgrad library courses aren’t affected, thank god. but my point is, aren’t we meant to fuck up and pick the wrong things in life sometimes??? aren’t we meant to be indecisive about our choices in our late teens up until our mid 20s???
but now you’re telling students that their very first year of uni is practically set out for them, even for arts/humanities degrees (im not counting properly prescribed degrees such as engineering/science/communications & media (they had prescribed majors and prescribed first year subjects, which is why i left it. because i felt trapped in the prescribed marketing et al major etc); all because the government is telling them that “oh to make your first year cheaper: (A.) get good marks.... so that we don’t cancel your HECS place and (B.) pick subjects outside of the arts/humanities like science/maths/tech related subjects so that you don’t pay a whopping $14,500 for your first year of uni and will be more likely to be “job ready”. whatever the actual fuck “job ready” really means. and this all as if there ISN’T enough pressure for a 18/19 year old to succeed in their first year of uni already.
although, the one thing i’ll say is that my one year advanced diploma in marketing that i did in 2014, was $16,500. i still haven’t made any moves to pay it off. but it was constantly in the back of my mind during uni, both undergrad and postgrad. it was there as a reminder to pick cheaper subjects, so as to not greatly increase my combined hecs debt and vet-fee help debt; which is now sitting at $42,500. which under this new policy is the new price of ONE arts & humanities undergrad degree. i’d hate to be going into uni next year at 19 years old (or any age really) with that price tag on my degree.
anyway. that’s the end of my non-sensical rant. morrison and the rest of the libs etc can go fuck themselves.

Be curious. Be humble. Be useful.
I was invited to give the annual Taub Lecture for graduating Public Policy students at the University of Chicago, my alma mater and the department from which I graduated. This is what I came up with.
---
I am incredibly grateful and honored to be here tonight. The Public Policy program literally changed my life.
My name is Ben Samuels-Kalow, my pronouns are he/him/his. I’m a 2012 Public Policy graduate, and I will permit myself one “back in my day” comment: When I was a student here, the “Taub Lecture” were actual lectures given by Professor Taub in our Implementation class. I’ve spent the last nine years teaching in the South Bronx. For the past two years, I have served as Head of School at Creo College Prep, a public charter school that opened in 2019.
I was asked tonight to tell you a bit about my journey, and the work that I do. My objection to doing this is that there is basically nothing less interesting than listening to a white man tell you how he got somewhere, so I'll keep it brief. I grew up in New York City and went to a public high school that turned out Justice Elena Kagan, Chris Hayes, Lin-Manuel Miranda, among many others…none of whom were available tonight.
We, on this Zoom, all have one thing in common — we have been very, very close to graduating from the University of Chicago. I have never sat quite where you sit. I didn’t graduate into a pandemic. But the truth is that everyone graduates into a crisis. The periods of relative ease, the so-called “ends of history”, even the end of this pandemic, are really matters of forced perspective. This crisis isn’t over. Periods of relative peace and stability paper over chasms of structural inequality.
You went to college with the people who will write the books and go on the talk shows and coin the phrases to describe our times. You could write that book. You could go into consulting and spend six weeks at a time helping a company figure out how to maximize profits from their Trademark Chasm Expanding Products.
You could also run into the chasm.
What is the chasm?
It is the distance between potential and opportunity. It is a University on the South Side of Chicago with a student body that is 10% Black and 15% Latinx, with a faculty that is 65% white.
It is eight Black students being admitted to a top high school in New York City...in a class of 749.
What is the chasm?
The chasm is that in our neighborhood in The Bronx, where I’m standing right now, 1 in 4 students can read a book on their grade level, and only 1 in 10 will ever sit in a college class.
It is maternal mortality and COVID survival rates. The chasm is generational wealth and payday loans.
It is systemic racism and misogyny.
It is the case for activism and reparations.
In my job, the chasm is the distance between the creativity, brilliance, and wit that my students possess, and the opportunities the schools in our neighborhood provide.
In the zip code in which I grew up in New York City, the median income is $122,169. In the zip code where I have spent every day working since I graduated from UChicago, the median income is $30,349. The school where I went to 7th grade and this school where next year we will have our first 7th grade are only a 15 minute drive apart.
In my first quarter at UChicago, I joined the Neighborhood Schools Program, and immediately fell in love with working in schools. I joined NSP because a friend told me how interesting she found the work. I’d done some tutoring in high school, and had taught karate since I was 15. I applied, was accepted, and worked at Hyde Park Academy on 62nd and Stony Island in a variety of capacities from 2008 to 2012.
At the time, Hyde Park Academy had one of very few International Baccalaureate programs on the South Side, and every spring, parents would line up out the door of the school to try to get their rising 9th grader in. I worked with an incredible mentor teacher and successive classes of high school seniors whose wit, creativity, and skill would've been at home in the seminars and dorm discussions we all have participated in three blocks north of their high school.
In my work at Hyde Park Academy, I learned the first lesson of three lessons that have shaped my career as a teacher. Be curious. I had been told in Orientation that there were “borders” to the UChicago experience, lines we should not cross. I am forever grateful to the people who told me to ignore that BS. Our entire department is a testimony to ignoring that BS. We ask questions like, why did parents line up for hours to get into what was considered a “failing” high school? Why had no one asked my kids to write poetry before? Why are they more creative and better at writing than most of the kids I went to high school with, but there is only one IB class and families have to literally compete to get in? I learned as much from my job three blocks south of the University as I did in my classes at the University...which is to say, I was learning a LOT, but I had a lot more to learn.
I knew I wanted to be a teacher from my first quarter here. I did my research. The Boston Teacher Residency was the top program in the country, so I applied there. I was a 21 year old white man interested in education, so...I applied to Teach for America. In the early 2010’s, I looked like the default avatar on a Teach for America profile. It was my backup option. I was all in on Boston, and was sure, with four years working in urban schools, a stint at the Urban Education Institute, and, at the time, seven years of karate teaching under my belt, I was a shoe in.
I was rejected from both programs. Which brings me to my second lesson. Be humble. We are destined for and entitled to nothing. There is an aphorism I learned from one of my favorite podcasts, Another Round: "carry yourself with the confidence of a mediocre white man." If you are a mediocre white man, like me, do as much as you can not to be. If you look like me, you live life on the "lowest difficulty setting." This means I need to question my gifts, contextualize my successes, and actively work against systems of oppression that perpetuate inequity.
Over the last two years, I have interviewed over 300 people to work at this school. There are a series of questions that I ask folks with backgrounds like myself:
Have you ever lived in a neighborhood that was majority people of color?
Have you ever worked on a team that was majority people of color?
Have you ever worked for a boss/supervisor/leader who was a person of color?
The vast majority of white folks, myself at 21 included, could not answer “yes” to these three questions. This is disappointing, but I've also lived and worked in two of the most segregated cities on this continent, so it is not surprising. By the time I sat where you’re sitting now, I had learned a lot about education policy and sociology. I'd taken every class that Chad offered at the time. I'd worked at UEI, I'd worked in a South Side high school for four years, and I still thought I was entitled to something. Unlearning doesn't usually happen in a moment, and I certainly didn't realize it at the time, but these rejections were the best thing that has happened to me in my growth as a human.
I moved back home to New York, was accepted to my last-choice teaching program, and started teaching at MS 223: The Laboratory School of Finance & Technology. I ended up teaching there for 5 years. I had incredible mentors, met some of my best friends, started a Computer Science program that’s used as a model at hundreds of schools across New York City…and most importantly, while making copies for Summer School in July of 2015, I met my wife.
All this to say — if you aren’t 100% convinced that what you’re doing next year is Your Thing, keep an open mind…and make frequent stops in the copy room.
I learned that teaching was My Thing. I didn't want to do ed policy research. I got to set education policy, conduct case studies, key informant interviews, run statistical analysis…with 12 year olds. This was the thing I couldn’t stop talking about, reading about, learning about. I really and truly did not care about the “UChicago voices” of my parents and my friends who kept asking what I was going to do next. My answer: teach.
If you look like me, and you teach Computer Science, there are opportunities that come flying your way. I was offered jobs with more prestige, jobs with more pay, jobs far away from the South Bronx. I was offered jobs I would have loved. But I’d learned a third lesson: be useful. If you have a degree from this place, people will always ask you what the next promotion or job is. They will ask "what's next for you" and they will mean it with respect and admiration.
Here’s the thing: teaching was what’s next. “But don’t you want to work in policy?” Teaching is a political act. It is hands-on activism, it is community organizing, it is high-tech optimistic problem-solving and low-tech relationship building. It is the reason we have the privilege of choosing a career, and it is a career worth choosing.
I had internalized what I like to call the Dumbledore Principle: “I had learned that I was not to be trusted with power.” This meant unlearning the very UChicago idea that if you were smart and if you think and talk like we are trained to think and talk at this place, you should be in charge. The best things in my life have come from unlearning that. Learning from mentors to never speak the way I was praised for in a seminar. Learning from veteran teachers how to be a warm demander who was my authentic best self...and more importantly brought out the authentic best self in my students. Being useful isn't the same thing as being in charge…and that is ok.
I believe this deeply. Which is why, when I was offered the opportunity to design and open a school, my first thought was absolutely the hell no. I said to my wife: “I’m a teacher. Dumbledore Principle — we’re supposed to teach, make our classrooms safe and wonderful for our kids.”
I also knew that teaching kids to code wasn’t worth a damn if they couldn’t read and write with conviction, so I started looking for schools that did both — treated kids like brilliant creatives who should learn to create the future AND met them where they were with rigorous coursework that closed opportunity gaps. In our neighborhood, there were schools that did the latter, that got incredible results for kids. Then there was my school, where kids learned eight programming languages before they graduated, but at which only 40% of our kids could read.
We were lauded for this, by the way. 40% was twice the average in our district. We were praised for the Computer Science — the mayor of New York and the CEO of Microsoft visited and met with my students. It felt great. I wasn’t convinced it was useful.
Kids in the neighborhood where I grew up didn’t have to choose between a school that was interesting and a school that equipped them with the knowledge and skills to pursue their own interests in college and beyond. Why did our students have to choose? I delivered this stressed-out existential monologue to my wife that boiled down to this: every kid deserves a school where they were always safe, and never bored. We weren’t working at a school like that. I was being offered a chance to design one. But…Dumbledore principle.
My wife took it all in, looked at me, and said: “You idiot. Dumbledore RAN a school.”
Friends, you deserve a partner like this.
The road to opening Creo College Prep, and the last two years of leading our school as we opened, closed, opened online, finished our first year, moved buildings, opened online again, opened in-person (kind of) and now head into our third year, has reinforced my lessons from teaching — be curious, be humble, be useful. These lessons are about both learning and unlearning. A white guy doing Teach for America at 21 is a stereotype. A white guy starting a charter school is a stereotype with significant capital, wading into complicated political and pedagogical waters. The lessons I learn opening a school and the unlearning I must do to be worthy of the work are not destinations, they are journeys.
Be curious
I didn’t just open a school. Schools are communities, they are institutions, and they are bureaucracies. If you work very, very hard, and with the right people, they become engines that turn coffee and human potential into joy and intellectual thriving capable of altering the trajectory of a child’s life.
First you have to find the right people. I joined a school design fellowship, spent a year visiting 50 high-performing schools across the country, recruited a founding board of smart, committed people who hold me accountable, and spent time in my community learning from families what they wanted in a school. There is studying public policy, and then there is attending Community Board meetings and Community Education Council Meetings, and standing outside of the Parkchester Macy's handing out flyers and getting petition signatures at Christmastime next to the mall Santa.
I observed in schools while writing my BA, and as a teacher, but it was in this fellowship that I learned to “thin slice,” a term we borrowed from psychology that refers to observing a small interaction and finding patterns about the emotions and values of people. In a school, it means observing small but crucial moments — how does arrival work, how are students called on, how do they ask for help in a classroom, how do they enter and leave spaces, how do they move through the hallways, where and how do teachers get their work done — and gleaning what a school values, and how that translates into impact for kids. Here’s how I look at schools:
Does every adult have an unwavering belief that students can, must, and will learn at the highest level?
Do they have realistic and urgent plans for getting every kid there? Are these beliefs and plans clear and held by kids?
Are all teachers strategic, valorizing planning and intellectual nerdery over control or power?
Is the curriculum worthy of the kids?
Can kids explain why the school does things they way they do? Can staff? Can the leader?
If I'm in the middle of teaching and I need a pen or a marker, what do I do? Is that clear?
What’s the attendance rate? How do we follow up on kids who aren’t here?
How organized and thoughtful are the physical and digital spaces?
Are kids seen by their teachers? Are their names pronounced correctly? Do their teachers look like them? Do they make them laugh, think, and revise their answers?
Would I want to work here? Would I send my own kids here?
Be humble
I learned that there are really two distinct organizations that we call “school.” One is an accumulation of talent (student and staff) that happens to be in the same place at the same time, operating on largely the same schedule.
These were the schools I attended. These are schools you got to go to if you got lucky and you were born in a zip code with high income and high opportunity. These are schools where you had teachers who were intellectually curious, and classmates whose learning deficits could be papered over by social capital…and sometimes, straight up capital.
“Accumulation of talent” also describes the schools I worked at. These were schools where if you got lucky and you were extraordinary in your intelligence, determination, support network, and teachers who’d decided to believe in you, you became one of the stories we told. “She got into Cornell.” “That whole English class got into four year colleges.”
Most schools in this country, it turns out, are run like this. I knew all about local control and the limits of federal standards on education and the battles over teacher evaluations and so much other helpful and important context I learned in my PBPL classes.  But when thin-slicing a kindergarten classroom in Nashville on my first school visit of the Fellowship, I saw a whole other possibility of what “school” can be.
School can be a special place organized towards a single purpose. One team, one mission. Where the work kids do in one class directly connects to the next, and builds on the prior year. Where kids are treated like the important people they are and the important people they will be, where students and staff hold each other to a high bar, where there is rigor and joy. A place where staff train together so that instead of separate classrooms telling separate stories about how to achieve, there is one coherent language that gives kids the thing they crave and deserve above all else: consistency.
We get up every morning to build a school like that. It’s why my team starts staff training a month before the first day of school. It’s why we practice teaching our lessons so that we don’t waste a moment of our kids’ time. It’s why everyone at our school has a coach, including me, so we can be a better teacher tomorrow than we were today. It’s why we plan engaging, culturally responsive, relevant lessons. It’s how we keep a simple, crucial promise to every family: at this school, you will always be safe, and you will never be bored.
Be useful
Statistically speaking, it is not out of the realm of possibility that several of you will one day be in a position to make big sweeping policy changes. You will have the power to not only write position papers, but to Make Big Plans. I will be rooting for you, but I hope that you won’t pursue Big Plans for the sake of Big Plans.
The architect who designed the Midway reportedly said "make no little plans; they have no magic to stir men's blood." I had that quoted to me in several lectures at this school, and you know what?
It’s bullshit.
I am asking you not to care about scale. Good policy isn’t about scale, it’s about implementation, and implementation requires the right people on the ground. Implementation can scale. The right people cannot. We can Make Big Plans, but every 6th grade math class still needs an excellent math teacher. That's a job worth doing. I could dream about starting 20 schools, but every school needs a leader. That’s a job worth doing. Places like UChicago teach us to ask "what's next" for our own advancement, to do this now so we can get to that later. I learned to ask "what's next" to be as useful as possible to as many kids as I have in front of me.
I hold these two thoughts in my mind:
The educational realities of the South Bronx have a lot more to do with where highways were built in our neighborhood than with No Child Left Behind or charter schools, and require comprehensive policy change that address not only educational inequity, but environmental justice, and systemic racism.
The most useful policy changes I can make right now are to finalize the schedule for our staff work days that start on June 21, get feedback on next year’s calendar from families, and finish hiring the teachers our kids deserve.
I will follow the policy debates of #1 with great interest, but I know where I can be useful, and I’ll wake up tomorrow excited to make another draft of the calendar. I hope you get to work on making your Small Plans, and I will leave you with the secret — or at least the way that worked for me:
Find yourself people who are smarter than you and who disagree with you. Find problems you cannot shut up or stop thinking about. Do what you can’t shut up about with intellect and kindness. Use the privilege and opportunity that we have because we went to this school to make sure that opportunity for others does not require privilege. Run into the chasm.
Be curious, be humble, be useful.
Thank you.

[ 365 Days of SasuHina || Day Two Hundred Twenty-Four: Delete ] [ Uchiha Sasuke, Hyūga Hinata, Uchiha Itachi ] [ SasuHina ] [ Verse: The Future is Wild ] [ AO3 Link ]
...it’s time.
So many months of planning, and years before that of yearning, have led to this moment. Sasuke has patiently bided his time at the scientist’s side, awaiting the perfect opportunity to make his dream a reality:
He, and as many others as he can manage...are going to escape this horrible place.
For decades, the man he knows only as Orochimaru has been employed by their government to create monstrosities: genetically engineered humans with supposedly impossible powers, something straight out of science fiction. Whether it’s men with super strength, bulletproof subdermal skin, or even people that can see through walls...he’s been paid untold numbers of dollars to take the human genome and twist it into fantastical creations...all to suit the need of their country for super soldiers, spies, and other roles. For years he’s spliced and manipulated their specie into things unrecognizable as human...while others are meant to blend unseen, their powers unknown.
Sasuke himself is one of them, a member of the Sharingan project line. Able to see and react to the world around him at speeds most humans can only dream of, he’s also engineered with extreme levels of physical fitness, and the ability to copy what he sees almost perfectly.
He’s one of Orochimaru’s pets. Just like the one Sasuke calls his big brother: the iteration of the Sharingan project before him, deemed a failure due to an immunodeficiency. Once the madman realized Sasuke’s attachment to him...he instead became a source of emotional blackmail. Motivation for him to never disobey his creator, lest something happen to his precious brother. A whim could see him terminated like all the others deemed a failed project before them.
...Sasuke couldn’t let that happen.
So, for years now, he’s served as Orochimaru’s right hand alongside a few other trusted members of the staff. Only one man outranks him: one Yakushi Kabuto, a man obsessed with both Orochimaru and his work.
In truth...it sickens Sasuke. At first, he’d been unable to comprehend. He was a child, after all. But now...now he knows the sick lengths the man goes to in order to manipulate human DNA until it reaches something to his liking.
In a way...he’s a genius. Never has evolution been so guided and forced. But all Sasuke can see is the way his work is abused...and the disgusting pleasure he seems to take in each new creation.
The latest project, however, was exactly what Sasuke had been waiting for: the Byakugan. Humans able to concentrate their vision so narrowly, they can see through nearly any solid object. While Sasuke might not fully comprehend the science, he doesn’t have to. This...is their ticket out.
Someone who can see through the entire facility. Who can lead them to the surface, to freedom…! With Sasuke at their helm, he knows they can make it. Already he has a small group in mind to take with him. He can’t save them all...not yet. But maybe, if they make it out, they can get the place thrown into the public eye, disbanded, destroyed…!
...first, however...they have to escape.
Since her creation, Sasuke has been subtly guiding the first Byakugan specimen - at first simply called B1 - to his side. Treating her better, kindling the human side of her Orochimaru has been attempt to suppress and restrain. But he had to be careful. Be too forward, and he risked revealing his interference. Be too subtle...and she might not trust him, or prefer him.
But now, he’s sure she’s finally ready.
Hinata. The name he gave her. She’s now almost fully versed in language. She understands complex concepts, as confirmed by Orochimaru and his team. Soon enough, she would begin training for her ultimate purpose: a spy able to see into areas denied her physically with eyes that can pierce almost any wall. Not only that, but her vision is nearly three hundred and sixty-five degrees. Without moving her eyes, she can see in nearly any direction, for far greater distances than any human.
The scientist had estimated, at her growth rate, she’d soon reach distances of nearly twenty kilometers.
As far as Sasuke is concerned, that’s plenty far. He has no idea how far below ground they are, only that they are, indeed, subterranean. All they need now is Hinata to guide them to the surface. He knows it won’t be easy. Even if they manage to be stealthy, this place crawls with guards. To escape with Hinata and the other four he has chosen, they’ll likely have to resort to some kind of violence before they make it.
...he’s willing to do anything to get them out.
Anything.
Escorting Hinata back to her cell, Sasuke asks, “How was your training today?”
“It was good. I think I met all expectations,” is her quiet reply.
They both know the purpose of this banter. They’ll reach her quarters, and then have their supposed block for working on her language. And it’s then they’ll exchange words. He needs to tell her they’re ready...and she needs to agree.
All of this work befriending and convincing her comes down to this. For their freedom. His freedom. Itachi’s freedom.
...and to put a stop to all of this.
There are three cameras in her room, all equipped to record audio. So, the pair have designed their own kind of sign language: subtle physical cues with their hands, faces, and shoulders that communicate the true meaning behind their meetings.
“Tell me more about your day.”
Tomorrow night. Midnight. Be ready.
“I was assigned new tasks, to observe various creatures in a room in the neighboring facility.”
I am ready. How many will go with us?
“What did you see?”
Four beyond us. Most have combat training. One has subdermal armor.
“I could see their movements, observe their behavior. It was...peaceful. I want to do it again.”
I have a route planned. Did you find the override code?
“Maybe you will. We’ll see what Orochimaru has planned, B1. For now, you should rest.”
I did. I’ll input on our way out. Everything will be deleted. All will be lost. This won’t happen again.
Hinata gives a practiced smile. “I will. Goodnight, Sasuke.”
“Goodnight, B1.”
Sasuke then does his rounds, checking on several other projects. Of them, his chosen three are also signaled. One more day. Be ready. Be patient. Be prepared for anything...even dying.
Better to die, they reply, than stay here any longer.
Last he sees is Itachi. The previous Sharingan prodigy gives a soft smile. “Ah, you’re back. It’s been a while.”
Is it time?
“I’m sorry...we’ve been busy.”
Tomorrow night. Then you’ll be free.
“That’s quite all right. I’m not much fun to be around.”
WE will be free. A life to do with as we please.
“Don’t give me that. You’re plenty fun.”
And we’ll find you a doctor.
“Well...at least you think so. But it’s late, you should turn in.”
“You too, brother.”
It’s then Sasuke moves to the server room to log his day and observations. Easy enough to do with a photographic memory. As he types, he looks around the room, seeing the master computer at the head of it. There...there he’ll input the override code. Then all of Orochimaru’s research - all of his bastardized science - will be deleted. Sent to the digital void where it belongs. Never again will be create another unfortunate soul bound to his will, or the government’s. His work will be a thing of the past - a haunting memory for those who get out alive.
And they will get out alive.
...he’ll make sure of it.
But...he must be patient. As itching as it is to begin, they have one more night. Orochimaru’s therapy for his injured arms will take place, and painkillers administered. Then more than any other night he’ll be too tired to stop them. They’ll align the stars themselves, and forge their own fate.
Just a little longer.
Then all of this will be over...like a bad dream.
                                                             .oOo.
More scifi verse! A bit of a...transitional piece. I wanted to write the breakout, but I had a long day, and wrote a LOT more than usual, so I'm a lil burnt out - next time!      But yeah, this is a followup to days 171 and 196! I'm usually not a big scifi person, but...I'm liking this verse, lol - I'll hopefully get to do more soon, depending on how the prompts roll out!      Anyway, my eyes are screamin', so time for bed lol - thanks for reading!

In the In-Between
Genevieve Renshaw had her hands deep in the pockets of her jacket and the fists were clearly outlined within, but she stood in front of the door calmly as she waited for Mr. Davidson to open up. The gates were massive and metallic. The president referred the place as a house. The populace undoubtedly would call it a palace. To Renshaw’s straightforward eyes, it uncommonly looked like a fortress. It was built on an eminence that overlooked the city. Its walls were thick and reinforced. Its approaches were covered with surveillance cameras and guards. A swift beep resounded as the gates opened slowly.
A crackling voice could be heard through a speaker.
“Mrs. Renshaw, please come in”, it said. The voice was urgent. She stepped into a small, delicate room with minimal decorations. To her surprise, it was cold. She looked around. The lights were strongly dimmed and she couldn’t make out whether the room even had any windows in it. The room was longitudinal and a unidimensional tube of light that guided the path to a single door. Either way, it didn’t seem to be very welcoming for an entrance hall. Faint steps came to her direction and became louder the closer they got. Milton Davidson approached her with a soft smile on his face.
“Mrs. Renshaw, glad to see you. Your report, of course, arrived before you did and I was just studying it.” His handshake was firm and strong. There was no room for further elation in him. “There’s a problem with the computer.”, said Renshaw.
“So it seems”, he said and scratched his head. “But we still couldn’t quite figure out why.” He was one of the best programmers in the world. He studied programming at the University of Moscow and had been researching new advanced computers with positronic brains for 10 years. He was the owner of the palace and responsible for the computer. “To begin with, no human mind has created those equations directly. We have merely spent decades programming more powerful computers and they have devised and stored the equations, but, of course, we don’t know if they are valid and have meaning. Or what they mean exactly. It depends entirely on how valid and meaningful the programming is in the first place.” He looked at Renshaw as they walked through the corridor. “That’s why I had to call you. You’re the only one that can solve it.”
Davidson held his key against a black screen and the door slid open. “After you.”
They entered a large room that was flooded with a warm light. Row after row of neatly lined up books with their spines facing outward, colour coded with dots, each section arranged in alphabetical order. There was a clean, beautiful chessboard floor and about fifty shelves fanning out from the centre. Six or seven people were busy dusting off the books. It seemed that they haven’t been used in a while.
“A library- how old fashioned”, remarked Renshaw.
“The data-centre is malfunctioning, so we’re trying to solve the problem in a, well, outmoded way”, said Davidson hastily. “I have every confidence”, he said stolidly, “that you already have some ideas as what procedure ought to be followed.”
“I’m not sure”, she said. “I have to see the computer up close. I have studied robotics. That’s not the same thing. I’ve had access merely to text material dealing with Russian robotics. Your material is well in advance of anything else.”
Davidson turned his face towards Renshaw and smirked.
“It is indeed, and we’re proud of it. We put all our research in the past decades into AI. For the last twenty years or so, AI has been focused on the problems surrounding the construction of intelligent agents, systems that perceive and act in a particular environment. In this context, intelligence is related to statistical and economic notions of rationality – that is, colloquially, the ability to make good decisions, plans or interferences. As a result of this recent work, there has been a large degree of integration and cross fertilisation among AI, machine-learning, statistics, control theory, neuroscience and other fields. The establishment of shared theoretical frameworks, combined with the availability of data and processing power, has yielded remarkable successes in various component tasks, such as speech recognition, image classification, autonomous vehicles, machine translation, legged locomotion and question-answering systems.”
Renshaw took a last glance at the shelves as they walked past the last dusty book. They now stood in front of a large double-sided door that opened with a fizz. Behind that door, there was a large enigmatic room with shiny black tiles. Floor and walls were covered in it. The whole ceiling was illuminated with a frail, blueish light. A rather substantial cube resided in the centre. The dark room was like a place out of time, a place to rest without consequence. The darkness in that way was almost like a sanctuary, a place to recharge and forget the things the world said had to be done. There was something in there that was like a promise, like the world before dawn. With each movement they made, their reflection melted with the tiles and it almost took on their form, waiting for making it real. They were standing in front of the computer. The brain that controlled the whole city and its infrastructure.
Davidson guided her towards the main panel and noticed her amazed look on her face. “I know that the world was afraid of AI and how it would evolve, that’s why they stopped researching it- even forbid doing it. But how we connect with the digital world is key to the progress we’ll make in the future.”
Renshaw looked back at Davidson.
“As long as it’s controllable, as a tool”, she said, “it’s authorized for usage. We’re allowed to use AI as a toolkit, AI can augment our existing intelligence to open up advances in every area of science and society- however- it will also bring danger. While primitive forms of artificial intelligence developed so far have been proved very useful, I fear the consequences of creating something that can match or surpass humans.” Renshaw tapped her fingers on the screen anxiously. Davidson looked at her.
“You already surpassed humanity, that’s why you’re here. He took her by the arm and inspected her metal-like skin on it. “You are the result on what the rest of the world has been trying to do. To enhance human cognition through positronic augmentations. You’re the first one of your kind. And you did this because you were afraid that AI, made purely out of equations, will surpass you.” He let go of Renshaw’s arm.
“What you’re doing here is forbidden”, she murmured.
“In here- it isn’t”, he said. “Now let’s take a look at the equations, you and your augmentations are the only one that might understand what’s going on.”
She did not have to go very far in her testing before she called very peremptorily for a transcript of the computer-drawn plans of the positronic brain-paths and the taped instructions that had directed them. Her iron-gray hair was drawn severely back; her cold face, with its strong vertical lines marked off by the horizontal gash of the pale, thin-lipped mouth, turned intensely upon Davidson.
“What is it, Renshaw?”, he asked.
“It makes no sense. The computer checked out negative for all attempts at flaw-finding. Many of the higher functions have been cancelled out by these meaningless directions that the result is very like a human baby.” Davidson looked surprised, and Mrs. Renshaw took on a frozen attitude at once.
“But the heat got turned down, the automatic water system and the infrastructure was paralyzed. It has to be malfunctioning!” Davidson exhaled sharply.
“I am not.” Simple letters appeared on the screen.
The two glared at the screen. Davidson relaxed his tense pose and took a step back from the screen. He exhaled calmly.
“I believe I know what’s happening”, he said. “We wanted to make the computer self-sustaining by feeding it all of humanities data. And it overloaded and stopped working. But now, through your interference, well, it gathered all the rest of the data it needed”, he explained. “It is not only a question-answering machine now. It can do anything.”
“This is wrong.” Renshaw turned around. “We’re supposed to work with technology, go along with it. Use it as a tool. Not let it come that far, let it work for us, not replace us. Machines aren’t human. Will their emotions supposing they have some be mappable, in any sense, onto ours?”
“Programs or machines will acquire emotions in the same way as us humans: as by-products of their structure, of the way in which they are organized not by direct programming“, said Davidson as he glanced upon the ceiling.
“It’s still not the same. It’s not natural. Not human”, Renshaw uttered. “What about a sense of beauty? What about Music? Music is a language of emotions, and until programs have emotions as complex as ours, there is no way a program will write anything beautiful. Not until a machine can write a sonnet or compose a concerto because of thoughts and emotions felt, and not by the chance fall of symbols, could we agree that machine equals brainy that is, not only write it but know that it had written it.”
Renshaw stood before Davidson and crossed her arms. He shook his head.
“A piece of music can have great emotional meaning despite being made of tiny atoms of sound that have no emotional meaning“, he said promptly. ”But a machine is a machine. It doesn’t have to be human. And that’s okay. So who cares about music. We are humans, and we are constantly surpassing our previous ancestors. I think there is no significant difference between how the brain of an earthworm works and how a computer computes. I also believe that evolution implies there can be no qualitative difference between the brain of an earthworm and that of a human. It therefore follows that computers can, in principle, emulate human intelligence, or even better. it” He looked at the grand cube. ”It’s clearly possible for something to acquire higher intelligence than its ancestors: we evolved to be smarter than our ape-like ancestors, and Einstein was smarter than his parents.”
“Intelligence is central to what it means to be human. Everything that civilisation has to offer is a product of human intelligence”, Renshaw countered.
“Emotionally however”, Davidson added to her remark, “we are still apes, with all the behavioural baggage that the issue brings.” He turned his back to her and started walking towards a door in the corner that Renshaw hadn’t noticed. “Come Renshaw, let’s go to the garden, the water is working fine again.”
The glaring light of the garden almost blinded Renshaw’s eyes. The bonsai trees lined the perfect lawn in their wooden boxes. In the centre there was a large pond with flowering lily pads and a wooden bridge that crossed the middle so one could look down at the koi carps. The flower beds were a riot of May colour and even on close inspection they were weed-free.
“Our unique computer; it was suggested that this would result in a collective intelligence that will be enormously more powerful than all present human intelligence combined.” Davidson gazed at the waterfall pouring down the ceiling into the pond.
“I still think we should shut it down. It can be dangerous”, Renshaw said worryingly.
“When we invented fire, we messed up repeatedly, then invented the fire extinguisher. Don’t worry, we’re making sure that wisdom wins.”
“But what if you’re wrong this time?”, she asked again. Davidson sighed.
“Why don’t you ask our new question-answering machine?”, he proposed. “Let’s go back and use it as a tool to our advantage, just like you always wanted to.”
They walked back into the elegant dark room. Davidson patted her on the shoulder. “Alright, here you go, ask away.”
Renshaw shook her head but then took a deep breath.
“What’s the meaning of life?”
A text appeared on the screen again.
“It struck me as an empty and meaningless existence, and that is exactly what it was.“
“This doesn’t make any sense”, said Renshaw. ”However, it is very pessimistic, almost worrying.”
Davidson’s face had a thoughtful expression. He walked to the machine and started checking whether it was actually working properly. “You’re going straight for the big questions, but okay. Why are you so worried about artificial intelligence? Surely we can always pull the plug”, he laughed. ”Ask again.”
“Is there a God?”, she asked.
“There is now”, the computer said and fused the plug.

Abduct this dick; assholes
Dallas, Texas                                               July 16, 2019
Well since I am known to be a bit of a killjoy; I reckon I should just go ahead and piss in everybody’s punch bowl right off the bat.  If I was a prudent man I would wait to secure a large contingent of followers before unpacking certain ugly Truths.  Excepting that a given percentile would drop because I essentially assaulted one of their tenants of faith.  I however have never been known to be either a sensible nor prudent man.  As the song says, “if the Truth hurts bear it”.  Thus with that in mind let’s dance.
The phenomena known as Alien Abduction is for the most part (like 99.5 %) false.  Now before everyone decides to block me, allow me to say that the individuals who are suffering and experiencing abduction are indeed being abducted.  They are being experimented on by their abductors.  The real question and therefore crux of the matter is, who is abducting these people?  What is happening to them?  For what purposes?  Why are they experiencing these abductions as being perpetrated by aliens, principally the Greys?  Why would not aliens be abducting humans?
From discussions long ago on the topic of Alien Abduction.  I was generally informed that, “come on really”!  Think about it, a more progressed race of intelligent beings can cross the entirety of the cosmos to come anal probe hill-billy Jeb to see what he has been eating?  Really?  Look long ago I saw all kinds of “spheres” and craft very similar to what we now call drones used by ETs to collect data or observe us.  If they want information on ANYONE, including Hill-Billy Jeb.  They could let Jeb inhale a micro sphere capable of scanning his entire body.  Transmit the data to a command module or craft were a non-living version of Jeb could be assembled down to each atom in real time in a lab.  This “version” could then be manipulated as necessary to whatever determining factors were being considered.  This sphere could give continuous live real time data so the subject could be observed in real life context.  Without any undo suffering or harm.  Once sufficient data has been collected the sphere can simply exit Jeb’s body via the closest orifice.  Hell the sphere wouldn’t even need to enter Jeb.  I just put that in to illustrate the possibility to any who subscribe to such being necessary to collect data.  Oh and I mean no offense to my Hill-Billy friends or kin.
Please always remember these persons the abductees are genuinely experiencing real and very disturbing memories of actually being kidnapped and tortured.  Let us not add to their pain by trying to minimize their suffering so that what they are experiencing fits some little box in our minds.  If anything the realities of what is happening should enrage everyone to the point of demanding that those responsible are held to the highest level of accountability and justice is done to them.  Plain and simply put - beginning with Our Government the Alien Phenomena inclusive of Abductions has been usurped to serve the agendas of what can best currently be called The Shadow Government.  Which is deeper and darker than what is presently being referred to as the Deep State (Government).  During the ‘60’s NASA developed Holographic Technologies.  These were initially employed along with hallucinatory drugs as part of a variety of cover stories for the victims of the infamous MK Ultra (mind control) experiments of the time.  I suggest you YouTube Cathy O’Brien.  She openly discusses the matter, or read “Trance-formation of America”, or her other books on the topic.  The victims then suffered additional torture and trauma as these scenarios / cover stories were put in place among the victim’s memories.   As the MK Ultra program was expanded to larger and larger portions of the population it became common practice to embed and use the Alien Abduction scenario in all test subjects.  Matter of fact following the initial reports and the common use of hypnotic regression to recover these memories. In later sessions with these same individuals. They generally recalled seeing several of the notorious Men in Black also in the room during their torture (presumed science experimentation by the Greys).  I suspect that the more recent reports no longer recall such.  As programmers of this type are quick to adjust their activities to exclude any tell tale signs of “the man behind the current” as it were.  The explosion of this supposed Phenomena follows closely the expansion of the continuing programs replacing MK Ultra within and throughout our society.  Ultimately the interests of Our Shadow Government align with those of the Ruling Black Hand of other Shadow Governments around the world.  As such we exported this “Phenomena” to the world.
Sadly not all abductions can be explained by my thesis.  Mostly due to the fact not all ETs are benevolent, some even view us as a food source. Some are misidentified, when their old world label is much more appropriate that being “demons”.  Don’t worry everyone is going to get reacquainted with these entities from dark lower harmonic realms and their hive mind sets.  Much sooner than most of you may like.  Believe me we are not ready for what is coming.
So what the fuck does it mean?  The totality of the situation is beyond me!  What I can tell you constitutes a small portion of what is happening and to a lesser degree what is planned for all of us, but most particularly the unfortunate abductees.  First and foremost this project/operation was to cover up the sadistic practices of these occultic/satanic believers and their vile appetites.  Nonetheless the presumed operational objectives were genetic sampling and experimentation of the victims.  You see in Antediluvian times one of the great sins of the sons and daughters of Eve was altering their own genome or adulterating it with that of the Nephilim.  By the time Noah came around the practice had become so wide spread that quite literally just Noah and his family had sufficient original genes from Adam and Eve to qualify as being appropriate to continue the human race.  Important footnote here; as according to Antediluvian Law and Tradition, Noah would have brought his household with him on the Ark. Which is inclusive of more than just those consanguineously associated to him.  Consequently these Occultist that make up the Shadow Government wanted to track down all the fragments of these abomination variants scattered in the genes of the population.  They are currently active in trying to create Nephilim via cloning as an attempt to produce super soldiers for the Military Industrial Complex.  With some degree of success I might add.  If creating an abomination can be called a success at any level.  While farming test subjects they also wished to test how flexible our genome really is. Years ago there was discussion as to the programable nature of our DNA.  Comparing it to the Operating Systems of computers and how it could be used to transfer information along with how to make an executable file to update the base program.  As part of this, experiments were devised and various “packets of code” were placed in the test subjects.  At some future date the individual with be further victimized by being subjected to a stimuli (more than likely some form of non-ionizing radiation of a particular frequency and modulation) meant to cause the code to express its self in the subject.  With unimaginable speed the person’s genome will rewrite its self and express this physically in and on the test subject.  I suspect that depending on the amounts initially expressed and its penetration in our society many groups may have this delayed so as to see how it passes from one generation to another, allowing observation of any mutations and continuity.  They wish to hopefully create whole new species of humans.  Granted the attrition rate will be immense, but hey “you gotta break a few eggs to make an omelet”. At least that is what they would have you believe.  There are other tie-ins, considerations and vectors from other platforms that are worth thinking about as part of this.  Speculation into the topic could fill pages, and no doubt does in various operation manuals elsewhere.  But I need to be as succinct as possible and maintain focus for any reader who happens upon my writings.  Good Luck to Us All; G-dspeed and may He have mercy on Us all; cause it is going to be a wild ride...

Tumblr media
hey all! i'm ellie and i’ll be writing my lil sad comp sci nerd, bella! i haven’t been in the rp community for... awhile... so i apologize if i'm a little rusty. also a quick disclaimer... i’m not very knowledgeable when it comes to computer science. i’m fairly decent with html but know nOTHING when it comes to java, python and anything else. but i'm going to do my best! you can read below if you wanna get to know her a little better. i LOVE plotting so plEASE im so we can get our little babs writing together! you can also like this post and i’ll message you. i'm going to start reading everyone else intro posts now. can't wait to get to know all of you!
disclaimer: bella is very very loosely based on abigail from stardew valley. TLDR:
bella grew up primarily in stardew valley. she left the city for four years during her undergrad and graduated with a comp sci degree three years ago.
she’s a programmer ( hit her up fix your printer :-) she’ll only be somewhat annoyed. ) and doesn’t have a lot of professional experience. this basically means she’s a little worker monkey for software developers.
she has depression but he refuses to acknowledge it.
she’s pretty pessimistic and definitely isn't the easiest to get along with it. 54% of the time she’s sad. 54% of the time she’s angry and about 2% of the time she’s content.
MORE INFO:
bella was born to carol & philip romana in the city.
bella’s mother and father separated when she was just five years old.
bella father is CTO ( chief of technology ) of an oil & gas company in the city and after a three year affair her mother eventually learned that her father’s business trips were actually visits to see his second family, his girlfriend and the child they now had together.
bella’s parents tried to work things out but after 6 short months bella and her mother left. they moved back in with bella’s widowed grandmother in stardew valley.
despite having an empty resume since her wedding day, bella’s mother managed to get a job at jojomarket.
rather than being educated by the local tutor, bella was home schooled online. despite being primarily raised in the valley she felt like an outsider. she hated the small town she was bound to.
despite only living an hour away, bella didn’t have much contact with her father. he was always consistent when it came to material things though and never once did he forget to send her a gift for christmas or her birthday. sadly, no card was to be found in the wrapping paper and honestly, all bella wanted to read was an “i love you” from her father.
fitting to a CTO, many of these gifts were the latest tech and this what began her deep interest in coding.
bella has always blamed her father’s leaving for the reason her personality is so sad. she hates her father. sadly, she and her father are eerily similar. though she will never know this.
when bella was eighteen years old she left stardew valley for the first time since her childhood. the reason for this departure? university.
bella attended university in the city and majored in computer science. her education was paid for by her estranged father.
in the city she lived with five roommates in a home that was meant to hold only three.
after just her first year of university, bella had planned on staying in the city. sure, living in the city was expensive even with five roommates but her naivety and greed for more than just a small town life outweighed the reality of her situation.
only a few days after celebrating the completion of her last class. her grandmother passed.
bella had known that her grandmother was sick but the death crept up on the small family and left her mother distraught. unable to handle the pain bella’s mother decided she would stay in the city for a couple weeks with a friend and bella would stay in stardew valley to look over the house. a funeral would be held once her mother was in a better place.
months went by and bella started to realize how much she enjoyed the independence of living alone. no roommates. no family. alone.
finally, a funeral was held. it was a small service and considering her grandmother was only survived by a single child and was not close with her other family members it was mainly towns people that came to say their goodbyes.
after the funeral bella’s mother told her that she would not be returning to stardew valley and gave her two choices: bella could move back to the city if she so chose or she could stay in stardew valley, rent free and they would sell her grandmothers home at a later date.
bella chose the ladder. she told herself that she would only be staying in stardew valley for a year at the most but three years have now passed and she still lives rent free in the home of her late grandmother. her four walls feel deafening lonely but the fear of failing in the city are keeping her from making the big move.
since bella was a child her mother had been her best friend. bella’s mother is currently rebuilding her life in the city and due to this has been very busy over the past few years. bella hasn’t spoken to her mother in half a year and the last time they spoke they got into a fight over cardboard boxes.
currently bella is working as a freelance programmer and building up her portfolio. she hates stardew valley. she wants more. but she can’t work up the courage to be brave and achieve it.
for work bella mainly writes codes for apps that will inventible fail and accidentally spends a lot of time helping out the other towns people with mundane tech problems.
due to bella’s shy nature and sorrow filled soul, she doesn’t have many friends and is seen as quite pessimistic when compared to others.
after the death of her grandmother and the quick departure of her mother bella has developed major depressive disorder. actually, her lack of courage to move on from stardew valley has nothing to do with courage at all. her depression has left with a lack of motivation and is also the reason she spends most of her time indoors either playing games, listening to music or studying code.
bella is anything but self aware and hasn’t realized she’s her depression is more than just her personality. it’s a mental illness. being a crestfallen individual she passes her sorrow off as just being a part of who she is.

skill and creation in hacf
I’ve seen a lot about who’s the “smartest” or “most creative” in HACF (often paired with Donna hate…), and while of course it’s always more complicated than simple character stats, I thought it might be fun to look at the various ways the characters are skilled and how they differ. So let’s break down these characters like Pokemon, shall we?
Hard skills: by this I basically mean strictly technical proficiency and knowledge. This is what most people think when they consider the characters’ “intelligence”.
Donna: Based solely on what’s plainly stated in dialogue, Donna is a skilled engineer with a computer science degree. In terms of “hard” skills, she has at minimum THE SAME credentials as Gordon. Like I’m tired of hearing about this.
Gordon: He has the same degree as Donna. I mean, there’s not much to say here because it’s sort of matter-of-fact, he is evidently good at what he does and I would say it’s by far his strongest area out of the 3 I’m looking at.
Cam: Cameron is more slippery to pin down, but we’re meant to understand her as exceptionally bright, a prodigy, in the sort of nebulous good-at-everything way TV likes to depict prodigies.
Joe: He has other skills, more specifically he is good at selling, influencing, and encouraging, but he is not knowledgeable about computers by his own admission, and as evidenced repeatedly. He’s the least technically skilled of the group.
Something to consider is how in this one area, the skills of the characters go against the typical distribution of tech skills in media, gender role-wise: both women are very talented re: hard skills, and the least talented person is a man, who in other ways, small and large, is an outsider and goes against typical gender norms. Someone who is not me write an essay on this. Anyway, moving on...
Soft skills: Soft skills encompass things like organization, time management, communicating with others, etc. Unlike hard skills they’re harder to teach or quantify, because they’re usually not considered job skills, just someone’s personality, or, in a more unspoken way, “feminine” skills.
Donna: She’s skilled at these because she needs to be, as a mother and wife, and because she is by default the only person who really has these skills at Mutiny and is therefore forced to step into that role- to deal with the power company, to prevent coders from attacking each other, to organize, etc. She’s the most classic example of someone with good soft skills.
Gordon: He sucks at this. He’s got some brain stuff going on, but mostly he’s a man in the 1980’s who has never developed these skills because he’s never needed to; he’s got Donna. Of note is the fact that even in season 1, Donna is performing these duties for Gordon at home with no pay. YMMV on how much of that is normal in a relationship, but the fact is the Giant project would never have gotten off the ground if Gordon had to take on 50% of childcare, event planning and other household responsibilities, and this is true of many families.
Cameron: Bless her heart, she is also garbage at these, in a more overt way than Gordon. Part trauma, part possible autism/adhd/other neurodivergence, part “is literally 19 at the start of the series”.
Joe: This is tricky. He is very skilled, but in a restricted and relatively short term way, that is to say he burns bridges as fast as he can build them. This is one of the areas he learns to improve over time.
Though you might not consider these things when comparing the characters’ smarts or talents, they’re definitely part of that equation. These are all skills that are undervalued but that in real life are crucial, and no project can succeed without them; if you can’t talk to people you can’t work in a team, secure funding, etc. They may not be impressive skills like coding, but they are crucial, and this is where most of the tension between Cam and Donna comes from in season 2 and 3: Cameron doesn’t understand this and feels judged, and Donna resents being made to fill that role. If you don’t consider soft skills as valuable, time-consuming and challenging, most of Donna’s character development and personal struggles will be lost on you.
Creativity: This is a little more difficult to define. It’s not just ideas, and as anyone in a creative field will tell you, everyone hates the “idea guy”; typically a dude, who thinks his ideas are great, but has no concept of how to follow through on them. Creativity implies an understanding of how your idea can be implemented, if not the personal know-how to do it.
Cameron: She is of course the main creative: the friendly OS, Mutiny, Space Bike, etc. She can both imagine her ideas, and has the know-how to execute these ideas personally.
Donna: Her main idea in the series is Community, and again, she both imagines the idea AND knows how to implement it and develop it further as the concept grows. She is building on the Mutiny concept, of course, in the same way Cameron’s Mutiny concept was building on the existing framework of phone lines. Aside from that, Donna, creatively, is the one most likely to come up with fixes for specific problems (think the piggybacked layout of the Giant and the trick to convince Joe they had ported Mutiny to UNIX), which is interesting considering that’s her role in the plot socially as well.
Joe: At the outset, he is absolutely, 100%, the Idea Guy. Possibly the best example is the scene in season 1 where he writes 2x faster, 2x cheaper on the whiteboard and expects Cam and Gordon to reverse engineer that into reality. In real life this kind of behavior doesn’t impress anyone. Like, anyone, really anyone, can do that. I can tell you I have an idea for an app that lets you talk to your cat, but if my whole idea is “an app that lets you talk to your cat”, I’m very clearly full of shit and my idea is pointless. So while Joe is outwardly creative he is, creatively, the least useful. Again, Joe evolves here, as the writers realized “Mad Men clone” was a bad look for their show, and as he naturally learns more about the industry his ideas get more grounded.
Gordon: He has… some ideas, notably Sonaris and his garage-based computer business, but both flop badly and immediately and he lacks the vision to polish them into something functional. I would say Gordon is the least “creative” of the main four, but this brings me to another thing:
Gordon and Joe: They typically arrive at ideas together, the Giant most prominently (Cam’s OS is almost entirely separate from the Joe/Gordon back and forth on the hardware), their business in season 4, and I would argue Sonaris/MacMillan Utility. Joe suggests an idea with no technical basis, and Gordon is the one who figures out the execution, or vice versa: Gordon invents unsellable, impractical software, and Joe figures out how to use and sell it.
This is crucial: I can’t count Joe’s Giant concept as an independent idea, because he himself has no clue how something like that would work, whereas it's not fully Gordon’s because he’s not capable of that kind of initial creative drive. Their ideas only really reach fruition when both are involved. What’s fascinating is seeing how he and Gordon mesh together as partners, both equally crucial. There’s tension there, but ultimately they're uniquely well-matched and rarely work without the other. Even when Joe starts his company without Gordon, he’s using his software. Comparatively, Cam and Donna do work together but can create independently; it's less meshed at that creative level because they are individually more well-rounded.
In conclusion I guess, while all these nuances are definitely explored in a way that many shows don’t do, HACF definitely falls into that trap of attributing ideas and achievements to individuals rather than teams, and specifically those individuals who have skills understood as valuable in a capitalist, white man-centric culture. Here that means coders and engineers, with other disciplines that Cardiff or Mutiny would definitely need, like visual and sound artists, HR staff and yeah, janitorial staff, happening automatically in the background.
Part of this is because of the obvious fact that you need central characters to root for, but it’s worth keeping in mind because this is definitely a mindset that affects the workforce particularly for lower-paid, majority female and nonwhite jobs. Appreciate these people!
Thanks for reading!

Tanto has the potential to be able to disrupt a multibillion dollars industry, namely the storage on the worlds files in a way that is more private, more secure, plus more price useful when compared to how ever before. With virtually no need intended for a fundamental bank involving severs on which to store data, Sia could totally better the cloud storage space field by utilizing blockchain technology to fit peer-to-peer file storage. The way it works can be hosts in addition to renters participate in file agreements which often is essentially an contract involving the storage service provider as well as the consumer; this requires place ahead of any storage area is given. The customer pays the Siacoins beforehand to the blockchain, which will acts as an escrow service, with the earlier contract serving as this rules for arbitration. You could create your wallet within the app, you will become given a seed which in turn is a good list of words store this someplace safe as this will be precisely how your wallet will be backed up, you will will need it if you need to reconstruct your pocket. Once you have your wallet synced, you could begin mailing and getting Siacoins and in addition come to be some sort of host or number your own own files on this community. From an investing point of view, Tanto did very well above the last six several weeks and it has proven itself to help be a good resilient and often high resource. A new quick glance at the relevant graphs regarding typically the coins flight, and even you are getting to get a good perception of the particular outstanding journey Tanto possesses been on during the last two years or so given that its launch. Possessing explained that, one issue which in turn is causing the Nebulous advancement team concern can be, whenever you can believe it, this speed where the respectful Siacoin has surged in value. The reason with regard to it is that the some what concept of Tanto depends on Siacoins being utilized to be a repayment for expert services presented, certainly not, as several seem to believe, like some sort of investment auto. Only time can notify whether the staff are able to efficiently stabilize often the currency, as a result rendering this fit regarding purpose which in turn could stop potential traders in often the coin. Another region intended for concern is the challengers which are now coming into the foreign exchange market, for example Storj which in turn just held a good successful ICO where that they raised $30mm in tokens and have combined together with the extremely popular FTP program Filezilla to combine his or her product straight in it is interface. That is usually projected that the cloud storage market place could get worth $74billion by way of 2021, if Sia may possibly get some way to recording a part of this market from the proven companies such as Dropbox, Microsoft and Google in that case it can prove in order to be a very lucrative investment.
