New York City Hip Hop Playlist (YouTube)
Started building a unique playlist of hip hop tunes that originated from the city that gave birth to the genre in the first place: New York. Here we have a slate that begins in the party-oriented early 80s South Bronx and progresses all the way through the late 90s into a bunch of raw, underground, hot street rap fire 🔥😎.
So, if you've been following me long enough, you know that my forte with these playlists is to load up on great obscurities, and I've got a bunch here, but I've also got some classic jams as well, all of which come courtesy of Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five and Melle Mel. There's shortened versions of two early hip hop cornerstones: "The Message," which was the genre's first ever lyrically conscious hit, and then the anti-cocaine anthem, "White Lines," which Grandmaster Flash actually had nothing to do with, even though Sugarhill Records slapped his name on it in order to help boost its record sales.
But speaking of anti-drug hip hop anthems, a lesser known one from around that same early 80s time period is The Funky Four's "King Heroin," which heavily interpolated The O'Jays' own "For the Love of Money," aka the theme song from The Apprentice (🎶 money, money, money, money....mon-ay! 🎶). "King Heroin" is definitely not a completely unknown song, but in comparison to "White Lines," far less people are aware of it, and in total, it has about 62,000 plays on YouTube across a handful of uploads. Fun, catchy, early hip hop gold as far as I'm concerned.
But once we hit the mid-90s, that's when we really get into some of these underheard Big Apple rap goodies, like a pair of mid-90s boom bap cuts from a Harlem native called Raucous aka Sabotage, who at some point decided to leave an oversaturated US rap market for Germany. 1995's "Say No More" has around 1,100 total plays on YouTube and the Roey Marquis II remix of "No Way Out" from 1996 has about 2,400.
And Brooklyn's own mighty Mos Def aka Yasiin Bey makes an appearance on here too, on a rare remix of N'Dea Davenport's "Bullshittin'," which I'm pretty sure was produced by the one and only J Dilla. Super chilly synth tones on this one that's approaching 20,000 YouTube plays.
And lastly, Manhattan trio Missin' Linx supplies "M.I.A.," a song whose beat very well may have been jacked by Dr. Dre himself so he could release his iconic "The Next Episode" the following year. Both songs utilize the same main sample from David McCallum's "The Edge," but according to WhoSampled, either producer VIC was the first to ever sample the song for "M.I.A.," or one of his collaborators, Godfather Don, was the first to use it for underground New York rapper Scaramanga's "Death Letter" remix. Either way, although "The Next Episode" would come to be hailed as a late 90s west coast rap classic, Dre wasn't the first to sample that McCallum song. And "M.I.A." has about 176,100 YouTube plays while "The Next Episode" has managed to rack up hundreds of millions.
This playlist is ordered as chronologically as possible:
The Furious Five Meets the Sugarhill Gang - "Showdown" Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five - "The Message" Grandmaster Flash & Melle Mel - "White Lines (Don't Do It)" West Street Mob - "Mosquito" Funky Four - "King Heroin" Dana Dane - "Something Special" Nine - "Any Emcee" Raucous a; k; a Sabotage - "Say No More" Raucous a; k; a Sabotage - "No Way Out (Roey Marquis II Remix)" Smoothe Da Hustler - "Hustlers Theme" N'Dea Davenport feat. Mos Def - "Bullshittin'" D.I.T.C. - "Themes, Dreams & Schemes" Missin' Linx - "M.I.A." Mr. Supreme feat. Al' Tariq - "Run the Show"
And this playlist is also on YouTube Music.
So, we currently sit at 14 songs with a runtime of one hour so far. And maybe when I find more to add, I'll have enough songs to make a Spotify playlist too.
Enjoy!
More to come, eventually. Stay tuned!

Hip Hop Goes Global.
Hip Hop, a music genre that was once confined to the boroughs of the Bronx, has now taken over the whole world, without the use of force or violence. It has become a global phenomenon, influencing millions of people across the globe. The rise of Hip Hop as a cultural movement can be traced back to the late 1970s, when DJs in New York City began experimenting with looped beats and samples to create a new sound that was entirely their own.
Tumblr media
One of the key figures in the early days of Hip Hop was Russell Simmons, who was pretty much the CEO of the genre by running Def Jam Records. Along with Rick Rubin, Simmons founded Def Jam in 1983, and the label quickly became one of the most influential in the music industry. Def Jam was instrumental in launching the careers of some of the biggest names in Hip Hop, including LL Cool J, Public Enemy, and Beastie Boys.
Tumblr media
But it wasn't just record labels that helped Hip Hop to get its foothold. The Zulu Nation, a cultural movement that emerged in the South Bronx in the early 1970s, played a critical role in the early days of Hip Hop. The Zulu Nation was founded by Afrika Bambaataa, a former gang member who wanted to use Hip Hop as a way to promote peace and unity in his community. The Zulu Nation helped to spread the message of Hip Hop beyond the Bronx and into other parts of New York City and eventually, the world.
Hip Hop's global reach can be seen in the rise of rappers in Africa, such as WizKid, who has become one of the biggest names in African music. In France, groups like Birdy Nam Nam have taken the traditional elements of Hip Hop and blended them with electronic music to create a sound that is entirely their own. In Japan, Sky-Hi has become a star with his unique blend of Hip Hop and J-pop.
Tumblr media
But perhaps the most surprising thing about Hip Hop's global influence is the way it has reached even the most unexpected corners of the world. Even in third-world countries under dictatorship rule, Hip Hop culture has taken hold. In places like Syria and Palestine, rappers use their music to give voice to the struggles of their people and to promote social change.
Tumblr media
In many ways, the rise of Hip Hop as a global phenomenon is a testament to the power of music to bring people together. Hip Hop has transcended cultural and linguistic boundaries to become a unifying force for millions of people across the globe. And while there are still those who criticize the genre for its sometimes controversial content, there is no denying that Hip Hop has had a profound impact on the world and will continue to do so for generations to come.

Chase Shakur Has Much to Prove with “Sink Or Swim”
Rising Atlanta-based singer and songwriter, Chase Shakur is nothing less than the future heartbeat of R&B. Taking steps to ensure that his Def Jam label debut single and video debut is one to cherish, “Sink Or Swim,” directed by Khari McCloud focuses on the Atlantean's urge to succeed in the strongest way possible. Stating that he is sorry in advance, he curves with the beat as he doesn't break but bends the rules in his favor (and what a favor that is). Simplicity at it's best, Shakur's visual features a muse of dance creating depth as the song plays and he finds himself distant from his situations (even if they happen to appear right in front of him). “Sink Or Swim” is the first taste of Shakur’s newest project, it’s not you, it’s me, an addition to his renowned 2022 release, It’ll Be Fine. The new long-player is a mesmerizing moment in life after a complicated relationship, in which vulnerability mingles with toughened scars, resulting in a work that situates Shakur as steely and willing to learn from his own failures.
The talented singer-songwriter transcends genre signifiers to conjure up a unique world. Armed with a deep grasp of the South’s musical history—hip-hop, funk, soul, pop, and R&B—Shakur synthesizes these various elements into a forward-thinking sound deeply rooted in Black culture.

Bernard Jeffrey McCullough (October 5, 1957 – August 9, 2008), better known by his stage name Bernie Mac, was an American comedian and actor. Born and raised on Chicago's South Side, Mac gained popularity as a stand-up comedian. He joined fellow comedians Steve Harvey, Cedric the Entertainer, and D. L. Hughley in the film The Original Kings of Comedy.
After briefly hosting the HBO show Midnight Mac, Mac appeared in several films in smaller roles. His most noted film roles were as Frank Catton in the 2001 remake of Ocean's 11 and as the title character of Mr. 3000. He was the star of his eponymous show, which ran from 2001 through 2006, earning him two Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.
Mac's other films included starring roles in The Players Club, Head of State, Bad Santa, Guess Who, Pride, Soul Men.
Early life and Education
Bernard Jeffrey McCullough was born on October 5, 1957, in Chicago, Illinois. Mac was the second child of Mary McCullough and Jeffrey Harrison. Mac was raised by his single mother (who died of cancer when he was sixteen years old) and his grandparents on the city's south side.
Mac began his high school career at Chicago Vocational High School. His mother died in 1973 when he was 16 years old. Shortly afterward, Mac's older brother and his estranged father both died. Mac later graduated from Chicago Vocational High School in 1975.
During his 20s and through his early 30s, Mac worked in a variety of jobs, including janitor, coach, professional mover, cook, bus driver, Wonder Bread delivery man, furniture mover, and UPS agent, while doing comedy on the weekends at clubs and parties.
Career (Rise to success)
Tumblr media
Bernie Mac's influences were from The Three Stooges and listening to stand-up comedians Richard Pryor and Redd Foxx. Mac started as a stand-up comedian in Chicago's Cotton Club. After he won the Miller Lite Comedy Search at the age of 32, his popularity as a comedian began to grow. A performance on HBO's Def Comedy Jam thrust him into the spotlight; after Martin Lawrence was unable to calm an increasingly hostile crowd, Mac went onstage and said, "I ain't scared o' you mothafuckas," telling the audience that he "didn't come here for no foolishness."
Mac opened for Dionne Warwick, Redd Foxx and Natalie Cole. He played a small role in 1994's House Party 3 as Uncle Vester. He also had a short-lived talk show on HBO titled Midnight Mac. Later, Mac also acted in minor roles, playing Mr. Johnson the no-nonsense owner of a grille and diner in the movie B.A.P.S., and "Pastor Clever" in Ice Cube's 1995 vehicle Friday. Following that role, Mac was chosen to play the title role in the 1995 Apollo revival of The Wiz.
Mac had his first starring role as "Dollar Bill", a silly, slick-talking club owner in 1998's The Players Club. Mac was able to break from the traditional "black comedy" genre, having roles in the 2001 remake of Ocean's Eleven and becoming the new Bosley for the Charlie's Angels sequel, Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle.
The Bernie Mac Show
Tumblr media
In 2001, the Fox network gave Mac his own television sitcom called The Bernie Mac Show portraying a fictional version of himself. In the show, he suddenly becomes custodian of his sister's three children after she enters rehab. Mac broke the fourth wall to tell his thoughts to the audience.
The show contained many parodies of events in Bernie's actual life. Mac, who grew up on Chicago's South Side, was a fan of the Chicago White Sox, and would often sneak a reference to his favorite team in episodes, including enlisting then-White Sox pitcher Jon Garland to make a guest cameo appearance. In the 2005 season he wore a White Sox jacket and cap, and congratulated his hometown Chicago White Sox and their staff members on their recent World Series championship.
The show was not renewed after the 2005–2006 season. The series finale aired on April 14, 2006. Among other awards, the show won an Emmy for "Outstanding Writing", the Peabody Award for excellence in broadcasting, and the Humanitas Prize for television writing that promotes human dignity. His character on The Bernie Mac Show was ranked No. 47 in TV Guide's list of the "50 Greatest TV Dads of All Time".
During his run on the show, Mac had co-starring roles in Bad Santa and Head of State, as well as starring roles in the baseball-themed film Mr. 3000, and Guess Who?,a remake of the film Guess Who's Coming to Dinner.
Later years, illness and death
Tumblr media
On March 19, 2007, Mac told David Letterman on the CBS Late Show that he would retire from his 30-year career after he finished shooting the comedy film, The Whole Truth, Nothing but the Truth, So Help Me Mac. "I'm going to still do my producing, my films, but I want to enjoy my life a little bit", Mac told Letterman. "I missed a lot of things, you know. I was a street performer for two years. I went into clubs in 1977 and was on the road 47 weeks out of the year."
During this time, Mac was having success as a popular film actor, starting with an appearance in the 2007 film Transformers as the car salesman "Bobby Bolivia", and serving as the voice of Zuba, Alex the Lion's long-lost father in Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa. He co-starred with Samuel L. Jackson in the 2008 musical comedy Soul Men. These last two movies were released months after his death. His final film role was as Jimmy Lunchbox in the 2009 film Old Dogs which was released a year after his death.
In the final four years of his life, Mac publicly disclosed that he had had sarcoidosis, a disease of unknown origin that causes inflammation in tissue. Sarcoidosis frequently attacked his lungs. On July 19, 2008, Mac was admitted to the Northwestern Memorial Hospital in his hometown of Chicago. After being treated in the ICU for three weeks, Mac went into cardiac arrest and subsequently died during the early morning hours on August 9, from complications of sarcoidosis at the age of 50.
Mac's public memorial was held a week after his death at the House of Hope Church, with nearly 7,000 people in attendance. Notable mourners at Mac's funeral were Chris Rock, Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley, Samuel L. Jackson, Ashton Kutcher, Don Cheadle, the cast members from The Bernie Mac Show, and his Kings of Comedy fellows D. L. Hughley, Cedric the Entertainer, and Steve Harvey.
Personal Life
Tumblr media
Mac married his high school sweetheart Rhonda Gore on September 17, 1977, and together they had a daughter, Je'Niece, born in 1978.
In the 2003 National League Championship Series, Mac sang "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" at Wrigley Field with the Chicago Cubs leading the Florida Marlins in the series 3 games to 2 and in Game 6 by a 2–0 score at the time (it would soon be 3–0 in the bottom of the 7th). Instead of saying "root, root, root for the Cubbies" Mac said, "root, root, root for the champs!, champs!" The Cubs lost the game following the Steve Bartman incident and the series, with some fans claiming that Mac helped jinx the Cubs. Mac later admitted that he had hated the North Side's Cubs his whole life, being a die-hard fan of the South Side's White Sox, and was seen during the White Sox' 2005 World Series victory at U.S. Cellular Field.
Mac had a history of health problems before he went public with his health struggles. The first occurred in the summer of 2004, when Mac was filming both Ocean's Twelve and Guess Who while also promoting Mr. 3000. He was set to film the remainder of Season 4 of The Bernie Mac Show in October of that year, but due to contracting pneumonia in both lungs and suffering from exhaustion, Fox halted production for four weeks so Mac could recover.
Legacy and tributes
The first two of Mac's posthumous films, Soul Men and Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, were released three months after his death and were dedicated to him. Mac's third posthumously released and final film, Old Dogs, was released a year after his death. The 2008 Bud Billiken Parade, which was held in Chicago on the day of Mac's death, was also dedicated to his memory. On the day of Mac's funeral, his hometown's local television station WCIU-TV aired an exclusive television special, A Tribute to Bernie Mac, and had interviews with his former colleagues including Camille Winbush, Chris Rock, Joe Torry, Cameron Diaz, Don Cheadle, and some of his family members & close friends.
Tumblr media
During Steve Harvey's television show which aired November 14, 2016, Harvey read a proclamation from Chicago's Mayor Rahm Emanuel proclaiming November 14 as "Bernie Mac Day". Steve Harvey's guests included Bernie's wife Rhonda, their daughter Je'Niece, granddaughter Jasmine, and Bernie's The Original Kings of Comedy co-stars D. L. Hughley, Cedric the Entertainer, and Guy Torry (who was the original host at the beginning of the tour). Mike Epps, appearing via satellite, along with the principal of Bernie and Rhonda's alma mater Chicago Vocational High School (CVS), revealed and unveiled the renaming of CVS Auditorium to the "Bernie Mac Auditorium".
On February 14, 2017, Rolling Stone named Bernie Mac #41 of the 50 Best Stand-Up Comics of All Time.

DJ Khaled
A Legacy of More Than Music
by Xiara Lemoine
Setting foot into the DJ Khaled and We The Best press conference room, the media, press, and talent were swept into a space that gave a glimpse of the supporting community and backbone of the DJ himself, his Miami roots. The room is illuminated with orange and pink hued lighting, an homage to the beautiful Miami sunsets alongside floral graphics on the banners and screen at the forefront of the room, giving those visiting a taste of Miami and making the natives feel at home as Khaled would.
With chat and excitement filling the room from familiar faces reuniting, the crowd was quickly silenced by the screen at the front of the press room illuminating the sight of none other than one of Khaled’s closest friends, P. Diddy. As he welcomed guests and people found their seats, he had nothing but amazing things to say about the DJ before he announced, “Without further ado, one of the greatest of all time. Somebody that I call my best friend, my brother. Welcome to the stage, DJ Khaled.” Applause spread throughout the room as DJ Khaled took to the stage to announce all that 2023 has to offer for himself and his partnerships.
Tumblr media
From the instant he took the stage, it became evident that DJ Khaled is an artist that not only entertains, but also educates. One of the first things he said to the crowd was: “Don’t burn any bridges because only God can walk on water.”
For those that were unfamiliar with him, he made it clear early on in his speech that, “one thing about me is I only know how to be myself. I only know how to be me.” This statement was prevalent not only while he introduced himself, but also in the display of genuine connections he has made with each person he works with.
Through sharing his plans for the future and collaborations during the press conference it became very clear just how true to himself he is in his personal life as well as work life. For starters, Khaled invited Def Jam Recordings to join him on stage, this collaboration is nothing new to the DJ being that in 2009 he was the president for Def Jam South. He shared that at the point he is at in his career he felt that it’s a perfect time to return, this time as a global creative consultant. This along with the co-branding of Def Jam and We The Best; the marriage of the two should excite fans for new music and content in the near future.
Tumblr media
The Miami native DJ then goes on to announce another upcoming project with infamous shoe brand, Jordan/Jumpman23. Yet another example of the genuine bonds the artist forms with his businesses, as he clarifies he has “never paired with other [shoe] companies because of loyalties to Jordan.”
Since the drop of the We the Best Jordan that sold out in seconds last winter, and “with this partnership right here,” Khaled exclaims, “this is a dream come true. I’ve been part of the brand since birth. Years ago I had so many other people coming up to me saying ‘Khaled, we love you, we want you to be a part of this, a part of that’ I’m like I can’t. I respect that y’all are coming and I appreciate y’all, I just can’t do it because it wouldn’t be authentic to me, because really all I wear is Air Jordan.”
His fans similarly felt the connection and authenticity with the brand as “this was the largest launch of any collaborator we’ve ever worked with in the history of the brand,” said the Vice President of Entertainment Marketing for the Jordan Brand, Reggie Saunders.
Tumblr media
Aside from the numerous brand collaborations, Khaled’s collaboration with the community proved itself to be just as important as he joined with the Jordan brand, Snipes, and Roc Nation to give back. DJ Khaled and Snipes announced they will be opening a Snipes x We The Best Store in Miami this summer.
One community outreach in particular stood out was Roc Nation’s School of Music, Sports, & Entertainment announcement of their full, four-year scholarship that is all thanks to DJ Khaled. With their first ever winner Felicia taking the stage beaming with joy, Roc Nation and DJ Khaled will cover all of her college expenses to reward her hard work in high school. The impact of the DJ’s outreach was visible to all in the room.
To close out the press conference the stage was taken by Dan Gelber, Mayor of Miami Beach who spoke highly of the resident of his city, DJ Khaled, and the outreach that he has seen throughout his time living in the area. The mayor explained that it is not because of his celebrity but because of his actions as a member of the Miami Beach community that he was awarded with the key to the city and a proclamation that February 9th, 2023 is declared DJ Khaled day in the city of Miami Beach.
Tumblr media
But in DJ Khaled fashion, one key is not enough, only major keys! The final speaker of the press conference was the Mayor of Miami, Francis Suarez, who awarded Khaled with yet another key to his city as his song, “I Got the Keys” appropriately closed the ceremony.
All in all, the press conference made one thing very clear. Beyond his fame, his highly decorated discography, or his financial successes, DJ Khaled is a man of God who is dedicated to building up his community and everyone around him. He is an artist that leads with a good heart, positive energy, and words of affirmation and encouragement. His press conference unified a multitude of successful and young people of color from all areas of the country, and perfectly represented the values he stands for.

A-T-2 302 Disco Rap Pt.3
Pt.3 the production is a on the raw side, they're also a little more obscure. Disco rap is passing through its peak in 1982 and once Run-DMC come along disco rap all but disappears
Another conscious rap, this time about cut backs. 40-years and still relevant! The backing music is variation on Good Times by Chic
Flo Lollis - Cut Back (Part I + II)
youtube
Part II - it's roughly an instrumental
youtube
Doing The Do sees Dr Jeckyll & Mr Hyd rapping over a re-record Bob James's hip hop staple Nautilus. Dr Jeckyll & Mr Hyde were involved with making Rockin' It from Pt.1 and their own big boast single The Challenge, they wrote Captain Rock's records (A-T-2 299) Andre "Dr Jeckyll" Harrell (RIP) met alleged predator Russel Simmons in 1983, he would become VP of Def Jam before founding his own hugely successful r&b and hip hop label Uptown Records in 1986. Between 1995-1997 he was CEO of Motown. Harrell also gave Sean "Puffy" Combs his break in the industry. Alonzo "Mr Hyde" Brown got their foot in at Profile Records where they released their first single as Dr Jeckyll & Mr Hyde - Genius Rap, rapping over Tom Tom Clubs' Genius Of Love. Doing The Do is a bit different, it's not on Profile so I suspect it's release was an attempt to cash in on the success of Genius Rap. They originally recorded as the Harlem World Crew and as you can hear that's who they say they are on this record
Dr Jeckyll & Mr Hyde - Doing The Do

Mike Serrette of South Bronx (A-T-2 301) put out three records under three different names in 1982. Hardkore has K. Tempel (Trapeze?) as the other rapper, I think they only release one record. Boom was co-written by Wayne Brathwaite who arranged Just Four - Jam To Remember which I included in Disco Rap Pt.1 and as I said there Brathwaite was bassist for a lot of Mighty M Productions (A-T-2 299, A-T-2 262) sadly I can't find the instrumental of Boom on yT
