It's been 6 years :)
On March 30th, 2015 I decided I wanted a gaming side blog. (so we're early, but shush, it's the month for me)
I didn't know what I'd use it for exactly, but I had ideas- something I always have even if most of them only get as far as daydreamin' or writing out before closing them :P
For proof on the lack of direction the blog initially had- the March 30th date is the anniversary of my first post, an in-depth and lengthy review of Dragon Warrior Monsters for the GBC.
If you know the blog then you know "Extremely long and in-depth reviews" aren't the norm around here. As a matter of fact, that first post is the ONLY one I've done!
The closest I've come to ever repeating that would be the (word of the day) Directionless video I put out on Hades to get a grip on the concept of making videos, but that wasn't nearly as much of a 'review' as that first post is.
Tangent, definitely planning on trying my hand at videos some more for the foreseeable future. Probably not gonna use the tagline Full Impressions that I tossed as a whim for the Hades video but yeah- I'm excited to try my hand at a few videos :) tangent over.
It didn't take me long to come up with what I'd like to do for the blog though :)
A few months later I liveblogged a challenge run of FFT where I used only Ramza- a solo run. - Which maybe only happened because I tried a nuzlocke run a year prior on my main account-
(Nuzlocke | FFT challenge run)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thanks to that haphazard liveblog experiment I started to realize a couple things which became the primary motivators behind this blog.
1) I LOVE sharing experiences. No brainer, I'm sure, but being able to share my experiences, and compare them with others' experiences, and just that mutual sharing is uplifting and feels good to do.
2) Liveblogging is an EXCEPTIONAL motivator to buckle down and play all those games I said I'd play (cue everyone laughing because I'm still way behind and have an immeasurable backlog).
But I mean that, on both respects. I have plenty of motivators toward the blog today, but if I were to be concise it's pretty much "It's easier to beat games if I liveblog them- otherwise I get distracted and play other games" and "I love sharing experiences and thoughts with people about my favorite thing- games."
Since 2015 I've tackled around 70 games as full playthroughs, and an untold ton as one offs or just to ramble about for a bit.
I've had a lot of highlights over the years, and I don't talk much about it as an overall experience so I thought for the anniversary I'd try to do just that. Not everything- I can't say I have photographic memory that would bring all of it up without prompting after all :P But whatever comes to mind as I browse some of my old stuff- as well as some thoughts on what I'd like to see in the future.
It's gonna be a bit self-centric I assume as I type this preamble to it, so let me say outright that this blog wouldn't be half of what it is without all the people who've given it the time of day over the years.
From recommending games they love or appreciate, to comparing thoughts, to offering kind words for analysis I've done over the years, to pointing out when I'm dumb and misread a situation :P- to, yes, even the people who decided "Fuck this guy's ramble" and deleted my captions before reblogging my gifs way back during Hamtaro (Of COURSE I remember that! It's amusing lol).
This is better because of others, because of the interactions and the people I've gotten the chance to chat with or befriend. It's just a liveblog more or less, my own little bit of fun I toss out for myself if for anyone- so seeing others enjoy this or that from the work I put into sharing my experiences or thoughts is always a joy in itself :)
Anyway, onto selfishly rambling about some tidbits of the past :)
Also sorry but no, opted to not shove a ton of photos in, it does have a handful of links to old posts though :P
This'll be disorganized as heck as I'll add to it over time before I feel it's worth posting (or the tumblr post editor becomes a hassle and more or less forces me to).
First~
FFT Solo Ramza Challenge: Considering it was roughly the first thing this blog has done, it's also something that's stuck in my head a lot more clearly than most of the other stuff I've done to be honest lol.
In truth, this is partially because FFT is my favorite game, bar none. But it's also because the whole experience was pretty new to me. Prior to it I had really only done one self-imposed-challenge that wasn't requested by the game in some manner and that was a nuzlocke run of Blue version.
So adding a challenge to my favorite game was a fantastic experience!
Notes I just wanted to say today about that run: If anyone enjoys FFT I honestly recommend giving it a shot for the unique story it lends itself to. I do recommend skipping the rules until after the second battle but that's up to YOU to decide.
My first post on the subject is me complaining about spending 4 hours grinding out the second fight and, despite hyperbole being my natural state, that was NOT hyperbole.
It DID take 60~ restarts to beat. It DID take 4 hours. The reason is that that 2nd battle is RNG as HECK, you HAVE to have Delita do some meaningful actions, you HAVE to have the enemies miss and make poor plays, you damn near HAVE to crit a few instances to save yourself from taking too much damage.
It's a numbers game to the extreme, so I wouldn't fault anyone for 'cheating' and skipping the 2nd fight for the ruleset lol.
The memory that stands out the most for that run is actually isolated in a post in which Ramza (Purrick in this run) talks like a total badass as just ONE DUDE running into a room full of enemies. I just think on that as a great encapsulated view of what it was like. The run started off face grindingly difficult, but because FFT is a game that offers so much freedom to the player it was extremely easy to 'break' the game into making Purrick overpowered as hell.
That's something I love about some tactical RPGs, I love having the ability to play smart so that I can play stupid later on, and breaking the game into making him one shot god is certainly a good payoff for playing smart early on :P
RetQuick: I miss RetQuick, it was primarily a short experiment I did in 2015 where I'd play a game for a short span of time (REALLY short, like 10-20 minutes) and record that for the purpose of making gifs and saying a short piece on what I thought.
It's one of those formats where the purpose was pretty shallow- but had a reason. I wanted to try making some gifs with some tools that existed online, so I made an excuse to do just that.
I also wanted to play a TON of games, usually through emulation on my sister's PSP, and this let me do that.
These two minor goals came together and so I spent a while making RetQuicks which were honestly more fun to make than they had any right to be. I mean the gifs were tedious but the playing? The thought sharing? The end product ocassionally having more appeal than just a photoset? It was fun.
I'm thinking whenever I have trouble picking a game for the blog I'll revisit the format... sorta.
I already reused it for a short stint to show clips I had no plan on expanding into a playthrough, but that died as well as it was too similar to Tidbits posts (another tag I no longer really use).
My thought is to rebrand retquick as something of a tryout for what game comes next. Play a handful of my backlog games for an hour or so each and say some thoughts before saying which one I'll continue as the main game for that period of time.
Old Tag Stuff: One of those things that only sticks to me since I made the decisions but it's always funny for me to look back on my old posts because I was apprehensive as hell toward making my posts visible. The reason my early playthroughs on the My-Tags page are variants of Ret instead of just "The name of the game so people can find this post" is because I felt like a liveblog would just spam the tag to hell-
Something I don't remotely feel bad for doing anymore.
So I avoided getting any sort of spotlight for quite a while on the blog for little reason.
Why Retphienix?: This is just a dumb thought I wanted to share and I'm sure I've said before.
It stands for retro!
Yeah!
Ain't that dumb and also not a real shorthand? lol
I think I have some sort of deer in headlights anxiety towards naming things, I mean do you think I think Full Impressions is a good summation for a video? I don't. But perhaps that's overshadowed by the other inexperiences and anxiety driven decisions that had- doesn't matter.
Retphienix is Retphienix because I sat there in 2015 and thought "Well... what do I name an alt account?"
My main is Redphienix, which yes, is ALSO a terrible name AND is misspelled. But it's that because of sentimental reasons. As a kid I misspelled Redphoenix when making my gamertag (I knew how to spell Phoenix back then as well, I was too excited about xbox live and misspelled it) and it's become something of a sentimental misspelling.
So I wanted to make a mix on that for my game blog, but I had no idea what. In the end I thought "RetroPhienix? I don't know. Retphienix is closer to Redphienix. I'll do that" and so it was done.
And just like how Redphienix is both bad and misspelled but exists because of sentimental reasons- Retphienix has acquired the same 'flavor' in my eye lol.
Aspirations for the blog: I have no immediate ramp up plans or road map or whatever, and in truth I'll be happy if the blog stays just as it is forever- up until tumblr ends- I cry over lost posts- and I reopen it on another platform.
But I do have blurry half-considered daydreams that I'd like to see happen for the blog through some hard work or shifts on my part.
One is something I'm already doing kinda, hence my embarrassing means of bringing it up a lot lately. Videos- I want those. I wanna make some looks back on series people don't talk about that I enjoy, I want to make videos sharing my thoughts on games I beat for the blog (like what full impressions kinda was, but I don't think they'll have a unified name from here on out). Maybe retrospectives, but mostly when I think of making a video tied to retphienix or me in general it's me looking at a game that said something to me, and saying it louder with my own interpretations on it.
You know the kind, videos where they talk about a video game but not the whole thing- just a singular message they really heard loud and clear from it intentionally or not. I dig those and I know I end a lot of games having plenty to say that could be directed into such a format.
We'll see.
And I'm along for the ride on that one as well- currently I'm keeping my eyes on whatever is directly next, which happens to be "I plan on playing Omori, if it clicks as something to talk about I would like to take a shot at that in a video too!"
The other is that I'd like to build a small community. Wouldn't know the first thing on doing that in a modern sense, but just a little online friend group to chat with and play games together. Something that could open up multiplayer and coop experiences being better shared on the blog and would just in general expand my gaming to what it used to be back on the 360 when I had a large group to play with.
Since the 360 era ended I've pretty much closed off- stopped playing competitive games due to lack of interest- and slowed down to playing all games either solo, with randoms (and no mic usually), or with my cousin. It's a rare instance when I play with some good people like @gamesception or another friend of mine, John.
When I diverted from playing competitive games nonstop toward other genres I didn't intend to also cut out all my online gaming buds, it just kinda happened, and I never really put any effort into rectifying that.
So more or less I'd like to one day sit down and work on a discord server, and then buck up and put the leg work in to make some gamin' buds again, but that's such a vague concept anymore.
Sounds all sad and what not but it's more ambivalent, I made decisions that
changed how gaming worked for me after the 360 and this is just where it landed for better and worse- I'd just like to see if I can make it a little better :P
General things I think when I think retphienix: Honestly? I think of how much fun I've had over the years and how thankful I am to have had an outlet that encouraged me to explore more of the medium.
I REALLY love games. I went to college for games, I've written LEAGUES about games, I've played countless games, my childhood was games, my adult life is games- games games games yada yada yada.
So when I think of retphienix I think of how without it I probably wouldn't have explored a lot of the corners of gaming that I have.
I genuinely, and I mean this, might not have sat down and beaten FF7 for myself and would have considered the amount I played as a kid to be enough.
I might not have played Chrono Trigger yet, and I KNOW I wouldn't have played Chrono Cross, and I'm happy as hell to have played both of those. CT was a mind blowing moment for me that showed me just how good an RPG can be, and CC gave me miles to think of in terms of innovating an RPG and how beholden to the narrative a sequel should be (I don't feel CC should have been chrono at all lol).
I DEFINITELY wouldn't have given New Vegas another chance. And I know I'm a sourpuss on NV, I've been that way since I maxed my achievements on the 360 for it, but replaying it really did reveal to me how exceedingly negative I was being.
My memories had become "It's brown and a boring location >:(" and "The factions all suck and it doesn't do anything with the idea of bad factions >:(" and became "It's... a little brown guys, not a big fan of the area" and "They didn't do enough with exploring the gray factions" while adding "Wait. This is pretty damn fun. And 90% of the additions are stellar. And I forgot about Dead Money, my favorite dlc in any game ever with a story that tears at my heart every time I think of it, NV good actually?"
Faxanadu would have remained a cool game I saw on SSFF and not a game I played to the end and fell in love with the aesthetic feel it has!
Also that's a game I cheated like crazy on lol, I would do it again! Save state scumming games meant to be rudely difficult is only fair :P
I probably would have never sat down to play through Windwaker which was such a positive and uplifting experience that I now get the most relaxed and warm feeling in my heart when I see those blue waves.
There's so many experiences I would have left on the table in favor of like... putting more hours into a live service title or something.
Maybe, and no offense to my cousin or anyone else playing it, but maybe I'd be no-lifing World of Warcraft nonstop just stagnating my interest toward the skinner box mechanics of an MMO?
Some offense, actually but lightheartedly lol.
But beyond the entire games I've played for the blog, when I think retphienix I picture all the time making gifs, all those games I played on the PSP for short stints, buying a retron 5 to add to what I could explore and being stoked when they shipped a freebie box of old controllers to go with it, getting angry at the retron for being a Piece Of Shit lol, crying at the end of damn near every game with an emotional story because I'm a big emotional mess of a person who finds investing and crying at a story way too easy thanks to empathy pulls, oh!-
Getting excited whenever I found that I had a "*controversial*" opinion that no one would care about lol. Like the one that comes to mind is that I thoroughly believe that Dragon Ball Z II: Gekishin Freeza!! for the NES is WAY better than the fandom recognized and appreciated sequel/remake Dragon Ball Z: Legend of the Super Saiyan!
How many people do you hear talking about either game, let alone saying the NES game that is roughly half of the SNES remake is the better one :P But I stand by that! The SNES one is a remake of DBZ1 and 2 for the NES but it loses all the charm and some of the fun of the NES ones by being a lackluster SNES game!
lol
I admitted wholeheartedly that this post would be a lit-
little directionless (gotta love the new tumblr poster making me break sentences like that), but to sum things up.
It's been 6 years. It's been an untold amount of work to be honest- liveblogging a game, at least for me, hasn't been the easiest thing. It's a lot of thinking out my thoughts (heh), it's a lot of learning tools to make the capturing process possible, it's a lot of experimenting, it's a lot of writing and editing, and, well, sometimes it's just tough.
I mean I went to school for coding, not video editing, not writing, not image processing, not this or that- but this hobby has introduced a lot of things even if only at a VERY base level (I admit fully to using online alternatives to make gifs for instance).
I learned a lot about, well, a lot of things in order to use this blog to learn more about games- and all that work has become part of why I've loved all 6 years of this blog.
6 years of gaming, work, and you all- and it's been worth the investment :) Here's to many more and all of you whether you stumble upon this post or not- literally anyone who's interacted in these 6 years, thank you, and anyone who hasn't I offer you well wishes as well.

You can open other Microsoft Word documents and spell check works. In these instances, the problem probably resides with the selected document language or formatting settings. Verify Your Language & Check Close the Registry Editor and re-launch Microsoft Word to check if your spell check works. Solution 4. Verify that a Word add-in isn’t interfering with the spell checker. Completely exit out of Word. Hold down the Ctrl key and double-click on the icon you use to launch Word. This will Jan 03,  · Deliberately misspell a word and click in it. Go to the Review tab and click on Language > Proofing language. Is the box checked to not check spelling or grammar? This is a formatting setting and can be specific to a single character. If it is checked, write back and someone will help you change this. See also: Mastering the Spelling Checker
Worried about making mistakes when you type? Don't be. Word provides you with several proofing features —including the Spelling and Grammar tool—that can help you produce professional, error-free documents. Optional: Download our practice document. Watch the video below to learn more about using the Spelling and Grammar tool. If no suggestions are given, you can manually type the correct spelling in your document.
The spelling and grammar check is not always correct. Particularly with grammar, there are many errors Word will not notice. There are also times when the spelling and grammar check will say something is an error when it's actually not. This often happens with names and other proper nouns, which may not be in the dictionary. If Word says something is an error, you can choose not to change it. Depending on whether it's a spelling or grammatical error, you can choose from several options.
For some grammatical errors, Word will provide an explanation for why it thinks something is incorrect. This can help you determine whether you want to change or ignore it. By default, Word automatically checks your document for spelling and grammar errors, so you may not even need to run a separate check.
These errors are indicated by colored wavy lines. A misused word —also known as a contextual spelling error—occurs when a word is spelled correctly but used incorrectly. For example, if you used the phrase Deer Mr. Theodore at the beginning of a letter, deer would be a contextual spelling error. Deer is spelled correctly, but it is used incorrectly in the letter.
The correct word is Dear. You can also choose to Ignore All instances of an underlined word or add it to the dictionary. If you're sharing a document like a resume with someone, you might not want that person to see the red and blue lines. Turning off the automatic spelling and grammar checks only applies to your computer, so the lines may still show up when someone else views your document.
Fortunately, Word allows you to hide spelling and grammar errors so the lines will not show up on any computer. search menu. All Topics My Account About Us FAQ Contact Us EN ES PT. Word Checking Spelling and Grammar. Next: Track Changes and Comments.

Cap 167 : Caza de Mastodontes en Valle del Río Magdalena, Colombia, Arqueología Paleoindios - Atracción Tours
.

Por Francisco Javier Aceituno1 and Sneider Rojas-Mora1
- This paper provides an overview of the lithic technology of human groups that inhabited Colombian territory between the Late Pleistocene and the early Holocene. The chosen methodology was to document and compare the lithic technology regionally,
------------
* This article was originally presented at the “Early Lithic Technologies: Beyond Regional Projectile Point Typologies” Symposium at the 77th SAA Meeting Memphis, Tennessee, April 2012. Guest editors Kurt Rademaker and César Méndez conducted the peer-review process following the Journal’s editing policies. 1 Departamento de Antropología, Grupo de Investigación Medio Ambiente y Sociedad, Universidad de Antioquia, AA 1226 Medellín, Colombia. [email protected]; [email protected] Recibido: mayo 2013. Aceptado: enero 2014.
In the earliest periods of Colombian prehistory that roughly coincide with the Late Pleistocene and early Holocene, lithic artifacts compose the majority of the scarce evidence that constitutes the record for this time in human history.
..................
The earliest evidences of human occupation in Colombian archaeology have been found in the Sabana de Bogota and the Middle Basin of the Magdalena River regions. The Sabana de Bogotá, a 2,600 mts high Andean plateau, was occupied by hunter-gatherers from the Late Pleistocene into the Middle Holocene, showing a great continuity in their material culture. The lithics found throughout this time period has been called the Abriense or edged tool tradition .
One of the earliest dates for Colombia comes from the site of El Abra where 37 chert flakes and a Holocene faunal assemblage (i.e., no extinct species) were dated at 12,400 ± 160 BP (GrN- 5556) [cal BC 13,236:12,121]1 (Correal 1986; Hurt et al. 1972). At the open air butchering site called Tibitó, more Abriense stone tools were recovered associated with faunal remains of mastodon (Haplomastodon sp. and Cuvieronius sp.), American horse (Equus sp.) and deer (Odocoileus virginianus) dated at 11,740 ± 110 BP (GrN-9375) [cal BC 11,826 :11,312] (Correal 1982).
The third site is Tequendama whose earliest occupation is dated stratigraphically between 12,500 BP and 10,920 ± 260 BP (GrN-6539) [cal BC 11,358:10,193] and contains Holocene faunal remains similar to those found at El Abra II but associated to a different kind of technology called Tequendamiense. The main differences cited between the Tequendamiense and Abriense class are the use of allochthonous materials and the presence of scrapers, thinning flakes and a projectile point fragment in the former.
These data suggest that human entry into the Sabana de Bogotá occurred during the Guantiva Interstadial, a period of time that displayed a slight rise in temperatures allowing a faunal-rich Andean forest development (Correal 1986; Correal and Van der Hammen 1977). Correal defined the early evidences in the Sabana de Bogota within the Abriense and Tequendamiense industries
Abriense class is made by direct percussion to extract flakes without platform preparation using mostly local lidite. Flakes are then retouched with direct percussion and were, therefore considered in the edge-trimmed tool tradition-
.....................
Tequendamiense class, on the other hand, is characterized by a finer technique than Abriense, which allowed the manufacture of more elaborate tools, made on high quality chert brought from Middle Magdalena Valley in fact the Tequendamiense artifacts may have been brought to the Sabana de Bogota site from Middle Magdalena. Tequendamiense tool making technique involved platform preparation allowing the production of highly standardized prismatic flakes and blades.
-----------
Technologically, the bifacial thinning is the key difference between the Tequendamiense and the Abriense class. Chronologically Tequendamiense artifacts date between ~ 11,000 and ~ 10,000 BP, roughly coinciding with the Abra interstadial (Correal 1986). There is reason to question the differentiation made between the two class thirty years ago, due to the spatial proximity and chronological contemporaneity. As Correal himself has argued, it is likely that both industries belong to the same human groups that inhabited the Sabana de Bogota towards the end of the Pleistocene (Correal 1986).
-------------
Both industries were associated with the faunal remains recovered from the archaeological sites. This linkage forged the idea that both industries –Abriense and Tequendamiense– were strongly related to hunting and butchering activities.
.............
The Middle Valley of Magdalena River (from now on Middle Magdalena) (Figure 1) is the other Colombian region with lithic assemblages that belong chronologically to the Late Pleistocene. It is located in a large fluvial valley in the middle of the country ranging from 150 to 450 m asl within the Tropical Moist Forest biome. In this region the chronological sequence is more varied than in the Bogota Sabana. There is a site with lithic specimens (eight unifacial tools in a clay matrix) called Pubenza that has been dated to 16,400 ± 420 BP (GrN19857) [cal BC 18,830:16,869] associated with mastodon (Haplomastodon waringi) and other animal remains within a dated stratified sequence, dated between 16,550±150 BP (GrN-662) [cal BC 18,403:17,629] and 13,280±110 BP (GrN-20101) [cal BC 14,333: 13,687] (Correal 1993; Van der Hammen and Correal 2001).
.......................
Leaving Pubenza aside, the rest of the archaeological evidence for early human occupation in the Middle Magdalena Valley dates between ~10,400 and ~10,000 BP, with clear continuity into the early Holocene (López 1999:65).
.................
Some tools show edge retouch and three bifaces and a plane-convex scraper display pressure flaking thinning. Technologically, the bifacial thinning is the key difference between the Tequendamiense and the Abriense class. Chronologically Tequendamiense artifacts date between ~ 11,000 and ~ 10,000 BP, roughly coinciding with the Abra interstadial. There is reason to question the differentiation made between the two class thirty years ago, due to the spatial proximity and chronological contemporaneity. As Correal himself has argued, it is likely that both industries belong to the same human groups that inhabited the Sabana de Bogota towards the end of the Pleistocene.

Title: The Devil Drink Coffee
Author: Destiny Ford
Publisher: Midnight Sands Publishing
Published: 2013
ISBN: 978-0-9892836-0-1
Pages: 346 - Paperback
Blurb
Welcome to Branson Falls...where small town secrets become front-page-news.
A cow suicide, a revolving door rescue, and the birth of a bright purple pig are starting to make Kate Saxee wonder if taking a job in her small hometown of Branson Falls, Utah, was such a great idea. As the Branson Tribune editor, Kate covers local news, which, more often than not, involves her accident-prone mom. Nothing truly newsworthy has ever happened in the quiet town until local teen Chelsea Bradford turns up dead in a Branson Falls lake.
The police rule Chelsea's death an accident, but Kate suspects there's more to the story -- and she's not the only one. Two of Branson's most eligible bachelors are determined to help her solve the crime -- among other things. But the small town social network is faster than twitter, and gossip about Kate's love life is quickly branding her the Branson Falls hussy.
As Kate learns more about Chelsea, she discovers that plenty of people are trying to cover up the real story behind the girl's death -- including Chelsea's parents. Now Kate has to juggle work, men, her mom's most recent disaster involving a low-speed John Deere Combine chase on the freeway, and fend off the Mormons heaven-bent on saving her soul -- all while solving Chelsea's murder. Dealing with this is going to require a lot of coffee, chocolate frosted donuts, Neil Diamond's greatest hits, and a slew of words not on the town approved imitation swear list.
Review
Destiny Ford (AKA Angela Corbett) is one of the funniest authors whose work I've read. The Devil Drinks Coffee is a laugh-out-loud book with a sexy love triangle mixed in smoothly. I thought this book was going to be one of those ridiculous, stupidly funny books. And that is exactly what this is, but it also happens to be a serious mystery novel at the same time. Yes, it's a completely goofy satire of the Mormon religion in a small town (written by a member of the LDS church, mind you, and not meant to be taken seriously).
Writing a good hook that draws your reader into your story is extremely difficult, but Ford had me at "If it weren't for that damn pig..." It usually takes at least a few paragraphs, maybe a chapter or two, to get me hoked on a book, but that one line is the very first line. I mean, I just had to find out what that pig did to make Kate Saxee so angry with it! Seriously, what can an innocent little pig do...?
This book is simply amazing, an incredible mix of two completely opposite genres which Ford nails.
5 out of 5 stars.

It has been such a long time since I wrote a blog post. I’ve missed it.
These are always moments for me to sit down and be truly reflective. I spend so much of my time doing science writing. I love it, but it’s cold…factual…to the point. It has taken me a long time to remove the “fluff” from my writing in order to meet my editor’s standards of science blogging, so it feels good to talk about travel again.
We aren’t on a large European trip this time. In fact, today was one of the most laid-back days we have had in a really long time. We decided to ease into my Spring PhD semester with a mountain getaway to Crested Butte, our favorite mountain town in Colorado. This is the town we spent half of our honeymoon in, and it has had our hearts ever since. After several weeks of a MAJOR holiday rush and travel to Las Vegas for our nephew Lane’s 21st birthday, we have been exhausted and ready for a week of relaxation.
2019 was a bitch. Other than the year that I nearly died from a blood infection, the year my dad died or the year my grandma died, this one was one of the worst. There were so many secret battles being fought on the home front. I promised myself not to go into 2020 clinging to all the negative things that happened in 2019, I am exceptionally excited for this new year, after all. Needless to say, 2019 was filled with all sorts of emotional loss, rifts in relationships I thought would never falter (there were several), sadness, exhaustion and misunderstandings. While I had more personal successes in 2019 than I have had in a while, my empathetic soul could not see past the actions and losses of others.
So, here’s to a fresh start.
But…it started a little rough.
Joey and I were about 3.5 hours into our 4 hour drive last night when we hit the town of Gunnison. We were on the final stretch of dark road making our way into Crested Butte when suddenly, a deer jutted out on to the highway and directly in front of my car. I was driving, and hit her at a solid 60 miles per hour. I am still shocked at my reaction; I didn’t swerve at all and did exactly what they always tell you to do…hit the deer…keep driving…slow down…pull over. I was shaking but managed to get the car over on the side of the road. It all happened so fast, Joey had been reading an e-mail on his phone and couldn’t figure out what we had hit. There was a big truck coming toward us in the oncoming lane, and he first thought something had launched off the truck and hit my Jeep. He got out of the car and immediately tried to take pictures of the damage to the front of the car and look down the road to see if he could see the deer. It was very dark, so we couldn’t see her in the road, but cars kept whizzing by us without swerving or stopping so we assume she ran down into the icy ditch beside us.
It looked like everything was reasonably in tact, so we continued driving the remaining few miles to our condo and got the car parked. We agreed to just settle in to our condo and assess the damage in the morning.
We could have spent the night frustrated about the bad start to our trip, the damage to the car, or how much we already have on our “to do” list when we get home. But we didn’t. I couldn’t get over the extreme gratitude I was feeling for how the situation played out. I feel so badly for the deer we hit, but these accidents don’t usually end well for the vehicle operators. I was so proud of myself for keeping so calm…that’s actually very unlike me in a situation like that.
I know it might sound cheesy, but I have been doing yoga religiously to help deal with the stress that comes with juggling a PhD program and struggles I feel as a truly (and deeply) empathetic person. It has helped bring me back to what is most important and how to let everything else go. This has helped me work through the selfish and hurtful things people have done to me in the last year, helped me balance priorities, helped me continuously love myself and helped me maintain calm. While I truly feel that Joey and I have proudly maintained a loving and healthy balance within a meaningful life we have built together, I feel like I am growing more by the day. I can’t help but wonder if all of this yogi-magic helped me out a bit last night.
We woke up this morning and made a delicious little breakfast in our condo. The sun was shining bright here today in Crested Butte, and we got out first look at the beautiful view from our small little deck! Gorgeous! The wind was whipping last night, but the morning proved to be calm and beautiful.
Tumblr media
Our condo is situated in a small, private neighborhood 7 minutes outside of downtown Crested Butte. It’s quiet and far from ski traffic (although this town really doesn’t get a whole lot of that compared to our other resorts).
We went out and took a look at the car. Not too bad, actually. It’s bad, but we definitely got lucky. We can’t open the driver’s side door, so we have to crawl in from the passenger side any time we want to get in. The front left side is pretty messed up, but the damage just missed breaking any containers on the inside or interfering with the wheel.
Joey spent the afternoon on the phone doing real-estate work and talking to the insurance company while I worked on my laptop. The view was great and the coffee was hot…
Tumblr media
To add to the already-complicated-nature of this trip, Joey has come down with a terrible cold. He NEVER gets sick, so it’s very weird when he is…I almost don’t know what to do! He slept for quite a while today while I worked quietly on a large national survey I am building. It was actually great. The views were beautiful, I was relaxed and got a ton of important work done. No complaints! Vacations come in many forms!
Because JoeJoe isn’t feeling his best, we decided to venture out to Clark’s market (insert tiny mountain town grocery store here) for some food items and make dinner in the comfort of our little condo. What makes ANY sick person feel better? Soup and sandwiches of course! It totally hit the spot. We snuggled up, had our yummy dinner, drank lots of tea and binged some Netflix.
Tumblr media
While this is probably the most uneventful travel blog post you will see from me all year, I think it highlights the beauty of doing nothing…and that’s totally the mood I am in right now. I am so grateful to be able to sit and write this today, to work from such a beautiful location, to have the freedom to relax as hard as we wanted today. It’s all so completely lovely and worthy of appreciation.
I’ll leave you with a quote that I think should carry us all into 2020. It’s going to be beautiful year (because we are going to make it one).
Happy 2020! The year of clear vision!
“Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for.”

On the second night of my first backpacking trip in Grand Teton National Park, I awoke to the sound of heavy clomping outside my tent. We were camped on Death Canyon Shelf, where the Teton Crest Trail traverses a broad, boulder- and wildflower-strewn bench at 9,500 feet, flanked by towering cliffs and the deep trench of Death Canyon. At the time, it was probably the most spectacular place I’d ever pitched a tent, and it’s still one of my most scenic backcountry campsites ever.
I unzipped my tent door to investigate—and saw a huge bull elk standing just outside my nylon walls. As I’ve come to learn over almost 20 trips to the Tetons since that first one a quarter-century ago, that elk symbolized just one of several compelling reasons why every backpacker should move the Teton Crest Trail to the top of their to-do list. And the date to apply for a backcountry permit is coming up very soon.
The Teton Crest Trail on Death Canyon Shelf.
After more than two decades of backpacking all over the United States as a field editor for Backpacker magazine and running this blog, I still consider the Teton Crest Trail one of the 10 best backpacking trips in America. And I’m eager to go back again. I think the five reasons I lay out below will give you insights into questions you might have about this classic hike.
The park begins accepting permit applications on the first Wednesday in January at 8 a.m. Mountain Time. Submit your application then, because most campsites along the TCT that are available in reserve will disappear quickly. While the park only issues reservations for about one-third of permits in advance—leaving two-thirds available each night during the hiking season for people seeking walk-in permits (which can be obtained no more than one day in advance of starting a trip)—demand makes walk-in permits hard to get.
If you’ve backpacked in the Tetons or have other thoughts or suggestions about this trip, I’d appreciate you sharing those in the comments section at the bottom of this story.
Here are the five reasons every backpacker must hike the Teton Crest Trail.

Wildflowers along the Teton Crest Trail in Grand Teton National Park.
1. It’s Not Particularly Hard
Some big, wilderness parks are famous for steep, rugged terrain, high elevations, and/or severe weather. But with the exception of two or three long uphill slogs—like Paintbrush Divide from either direction, or climbing from the lower Death Canyon Trail to either Static Divide or Death Canyon Shelf—trails in the Tetons are not especially difficult. Most of the hiking is at elevations that flatlanders acclimate to fairly quickly and have no trouble with, other than occasional shortness of breath. Like most of the Mountain West, the Tetons commonly see afternoon thunderstorms in summer, and snow can fall in September. But they generally receive stable, sunny weather with moderate temperatures during the peak hiking season, from mid-July through mid-September.
Don’t expect an easy stroll (and keeping your pack light has the biggest impact on comfort and fatigue). But we took our kids backpacking in the Tetons for the first time when they were eight and six, on a three-day, 18-mile loop from String Lake Trailhead up Paintbrush Canyon and down Cascade Canyon—probably the park’s most popular multi-day hike, and it includes the highest and hardest pass on the TCT. (Click here now to get my e-guide to that trip, which is the best beginner-friendly backpacking trip in Grand Teton National Park.) They were 10 and eight when we took a four-day hike from Death Canyon Trailhead to Jenny Lake via the TCT. In truth, on much of the TCT, you traverse a high plateau on a good footpath that’s certainly tiring but not exceptionally strenuous.

Moose on the trail below Death Canyon in Grand Teton National Park.
2. There’s a Good Chance of Seeing Wildlife
I’ve seen elk (and heard them bugling in September), moose, deer, pronghorn antelope, marmots, and pikas in the Tetons. Both times I’ve backpacked with my family there, we’ve seen moose fairly close (though at a safe distance). But while there are black and grizzly bears in the Tetons, in all of my trips there, I’ve seen one black bear, and it ignored me hiking down the trail while it fed on berries a short distance away. You should take appropriate precautions, of course, and the park requires carrying bear canisters. But bear encounters are not common.
Look for elk, marmot, and pikas at higher elevations in summer, moose in wet areas (like Phelps Lake, the forks of Granite Canyon, Death Canyon, and the main stem of Cascade Canyon), pronghorn and bison in Jackson Hole, and deer everywhere. Hit the trail early in the morning or explore from your campsite in the evening hours—and be quiet—for the best chances of seeing wildlife.

A backpacker in the South Fork Cascade Canyon, Grand Teton National Park.
3. It’s Not Crowded
Most dayhikers do not venture as far as the more-remote sections of the Teton Crest Trail, and climbers focus largely on the Grand Teton and other high peaks in the park’s core. Consequently, you’ll see only other backpackers on much of the TCT, and those numbers are managed to provide a wilderness experience. With the exception of a few spots that get busy at certain times of day—like misleadingly named Lake Solitude around midday in July or August, when dayhikers are streaming in, or Alaska Basin (which is actually outside the park, but along the TCT) on summer weekends, and in campsites in mornings and evenings—you will not see too many people in the Teton backcountry, especially after Labor Day.
Campsites are also fairly well spread out within the camping zones, keeping parties largely out of sight and earshot of one another.

Death Canyon, Grand Teton National Park.
4. It’s Not Experts-Only
Beginners who can read a map can backpack the TCT. Throughout Grand Teton National Park, you will find trails that are well-constructed, obvious, and clearly marked, including signs at junctions. You can hike moderate days and still complete a Teton Crest Trail trip in three or four days, or take an overnight or weekend trip on a section of it. In many ways, backpacking the Teton Crest Trail is relatively beginner-friendly.
Get the right synthetic or down puffy to keep you warm. See my review of “The 10 Best Down Jackets.”
The Grand Teton above the North Fork of Cascade Canyon.
5. It’s Drop-Dead Beautiful
However high your expectations may be from the many articles, photos, and videos of the Tetons readily available to anyone with wifi, a hike on the Teton Crest Trail will still wow you. From the campsites to the high passes, canyon bottoms, and virtually every step of the hike, the TCT offers a succession of soaring cliffs, vast fields of wildflowers (in mid-summer), waterfalls, and nearly constant but ever-changing views of one of the most dramatic and famous mountain skylines in America.
That’s why I consider it one of “America’s Top 10 Best Backpacking Trips.”

The Role of Objective Indicia in Non-Obviousness Doctrine
The following is a guest post by Lauren Vincent who is currently a 3L at the University of Missouri School of Law.  Vincent is the Editor-in-Chief of the Missouri Law Review. – DC
ZUP, LLC v. Nash Mfg., Inc., 896 F.3d 1365 (Fed. Cir. 2018)
Facts and Holding
ZUP, LLC v. Nash Manufacturing, Inc. involves two competitor businesses in the water recreational device industry. ZUP, LLC (“ZUP”) brought its wakeboarding invention, the “ZUP Board,” to market in 2012. ZUP’s U.S. Patent No. 8,292,681 covers the board itself and a method of riding the board in which a rider simultaneously uses side-by-side handles and side-by-side foot bindings to help maneuver between various riding positions. This transition is shown in the figures below.
Tumblr media
In 2014, Nash Manufacturing, Inc. (“Nash”) brought its wakeboarding invention, the “Versa Board,” to market. The Versa Board had several holes on the top surface of the board that allowed users to attach handles or foot bindings in various configurations, but Nash warned its users against having the handles attached to the board while standing. If a user theoretically ignored Nash’s warnings, the user could attach the handles and foot bindings in a configuration that paralleled the method of riding that ZUP described in the ZUP Board patent.
ZUP filed an infringement claim against Nash. Nash counterclaimed, seeking a declaration of non-infringement and invalidity on obviousness grounds. ZUP presented evidence of secondary considerations to the district court. However the district court found the claims obvious in light of a combination of six prior patents involving water recreational boards. Images of some of the prior art patents are shown below.
Tumblr media
The Majority
In a split decision, the Federal Circuit affirmed the district court’s holding that the ZUP Board patent claims were invalid as obvious under § 103(a) because a person of ordinary skill in the art would have had a motivation to combine the prior art references in the method it claimed and further held that the district court properly evaluated ZUP’s evidence of secondary considerations. See KSR Int’l Co. v. Teleflex Inc., 550 U.S. 398 (2007) and Graham v. John Deere Co., 383 U.S. 1 (1966).
The Federal Circuit agreed with the district court’s conclusion that the ZUP Board patent merely identified known elements from prior patents (food bindings, handles etc.) and combined them. Further, the Federal Circuit agreed with the district court that ZUP’s purpose in so combining (helping riders maneuver between positions by focusing on rider stability) had been a longstanding goal of the prior patents – a goal predictably shared by many inventors in the industry. The Federal Circuit further concluded that because ZUP presented only minimal evidence of secondary considerations, ZUP did not “overcome” the strong showing of obviousness established by application of the other three Graham factors to the facts of the case. Chief Judge Prost authored the majority opinion that was joined by Judge Lourie.
The Dissent
Writing in dissent, Judge Newman argued that the obviousness determination was improper because the prior patents never suggested the specific wakeboard modifications claimed by ZUP. Judge Newman further maintained that the majority effectively treated the fourth Graham factor – secondary considerations — as one that should only be considered in rebuttal. By requiring that the fourth factor “overcome” the others, Judge Newman contended that the majority engaged in improper judicial hindsight.
