we know their training doesn’t really strip them of all individuality. some of them choose to reclaim their original names or make up new ones. in the past, when sold in too-small groups, their training would fade and they’d assimilate to whatever group they found themselves with. they do things like overindulging in food, stopping by a tavern for a drink, seeking out intimacy with women. in short, despite their traumatic pasts, they are still humans with human desires and motivations.

if they really believed they were free, some percentage would want to return home, some to travel to places they have always wanted to see, some to settle down, find love, raise families. some may be in love already and dream of a future together. some must have family who are also enslaved—like missandei—and dream of finding and freeing them.

but we’re supposed to believe that, given a choice to do absolutely anything they wanted with the rest of their lives, every last one of them chose to *checks notes* keep doing the same thing they were doing when enslaved? all of them? really? All Of Them?

unless, of course, they didn’t actually have a choice…

i found a book abt the anti lawn movement at the library & decided to sit out in my yard & read it. but ironically there was a neverending barage of power tool noises making it difficult to focus. so i walked to a nature park near me in order to escape the dreaded sounds. almost stopped at the mowed picnic table area bc i hate walking but fortunately pushed forward and made myself walk up an annoying hill to an area that is a preservation of a native oak savanna & sat down against a tree near the edge of the path & did my reading there. and honest to god that was a 100/10 experience. there was something so powerful abt being in a preserve for a locally native habitat while reading abt the impacts homeowners can have on native plant preservation! it powered up my energy towards my life mission (evangelize abt enviormentally sustainable gardening to every single person who comes within a 10 ft radius of me) by like. 15 points. also a deer walked up to me and that was super cool

Delighted you asked this, since it gives me the excuse to share one of my top favorite posts about exactly that!!! I used @/TheQueerWithoutFear's addition in this post as a personal bible when starting out with art IDs! I think this post also has advice which is generally applicable to lots of comic IDs, since people can get bogged down writing every single detail of a piece when the broad strokes would do and thus detract from the overall comprehensibility of an ID. I also really appreciate this site as a great resource for examples on how to write concisely and with an audience in mind, and this post also lays out a lot of good tips! I'll round out this post with some general advice/guidelines:

Neither alt text nor caption IDs are better or even necessarily more accessible than the other; what matters is good formatting (so please don't put IDs below a readmore or use anything but plain text, use sentence case and primarily formal language, use brackets and "ID/End ID" formatting for caption IDs but omit them from alt, etc!)

For comics, especially long ones, I personally favor conciseness over strict fidelity to art, though this is highly subjective and depends on the piece and sometimes my mood. What I would boil this down to is that you don't need to include every detail in a piece to write a good ID, and using narration/prose is often more understandable than transcribing visual techniques (Ex: "She notices something to the side" is clearer and more succinct than "Action lines next to her face indicate she saw something to the side")

Organizing an ID's information in a top-down format is best for comprehensibility: start with who/what is featured (and where they're from, if applicable) and what they're doing, and then move on to background, style, and details

Going around Snezhnaya, visiting schools, and setting things on fire, making stuff explode with elemental reactions, showing off robots (they bring a big box of parts for the kids to try their own hand at making something that can fight against the segments' creation). Time dedicated to the kids asking any questions they want at the end and if they can ask something the segments are unable to answer they win a price

My Warren is American yes! Specifically, this man is from the Appalachian mountain range, basically somewhere between Kentucky, West Virginia, and Virginia. Upon becoming a news anchor he learned to hide his accent (remember that whole rehearsing thing? Also for non-Americans think your stereotypical "hill billy/hick" accents.) That's due to the fact there's two types of people in Appalachian states when it comes to accents. You're either proud of it, or classism taught you to be ashamed of it. Warren's in that latter half.

My Warren DID have legs in fact his legs are mentioned quite a bit in a little nightmare regarding his mutation. :)

Also Warrens sexuality is "I think I'm bisexual but this might be comphet" he's gonna be having a big identity crisis sexuality wise through out the fic. A big part of Warrens arc is coming to terms with who he is!

Currently Ron has no last name, and before I make any choices on ethnicity I do wanna take the time and properly research stuff about New Zealand to make sure it doesn't come off as offensive! I plan on doing that this weekend once I'm free from the hell that is my work.

As for how she feels about the turtles? Hoooo buddy. Ron has a lot of complicated feelings on the turtles. On one hand he knows from Warren that they're the reason she mutated. Well at least, they're the reason the oosequitos escaped Draxums. She holds a lot of contempt for losing Doug over that. But Ron also gets it, these are children. Children who have never been allowed to be people, who never experienced life, who never had birthdays APPARENTLY. So while there is this bitterness and anger there's understanding these are just poor boys who don't have good guidance. I like to think he regrets everything regarding them, and wants to make things right!

I'm so not okay about how Spiral ended, because my mind keeps coming back to badly beaten up Schenk, escaping the factory, and I can't not imagine him going back to his small rented flat, where he just stumbling to the bathroom, sits on the floor, and coughs up blood. There's ringing in his ears, that's not going away, and he closes his eyes, because this darkness, this nothingness is somewhat comforting, and he just thinks about everything that happened, and everything sucks, but he knows: even though he's alone, he should keep going.
