Patti Smith and Her Dedication To David
On this day in 2014, the iconic rock-n-roll queen Patti Smith (who's celebrating her 77th birthday today, by the way) dedicated her song "Distant Fingers" to David Tennant. Which makes me even happier when the first thing he said to me when I told him my name and spelled it so he could sign an autograph, he asked me, "Oh, like Patti Smith?" Yes, sir, exactly like that! For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, let me elaborate. I don't know how often she did it on her 2014 tour, but I know that on 29 December 2014 at New York's Webster Hall, she had a talk with her audience (watch at the link) before singing her song "Pumping (My Heart)," and described how David first caught her attention for his role as Alec Hardy in Broadchurch. Then, after catching him by accident in Doctor Who, she ended up watching his entire run as the Tenth Doctor, and - predictably, because DUH! - fell head over heels for him.
The following night, again at Webster Hall, was her birthday. That night she dedicated another of her songs, "Distant Fingers" - from her 1976 album, Radio Ethiopia - to David. You can watch that here - and I'd advise you to watch it in its entirety, as she begins to riff at the end of the song and talks about David:
youtube
And oh, just in case you're having difficulty understanding her words, or English isn't your first language, here are some of the lyrics to the song:
When, when will you be landing? When, when will you return? Feel, feel my heart expanding You and your alien arms
All my earthly dreams are shattered I'm so tired, I quit Take me forever, it doesn't matter Deep inside of your ship
La, la, la, la, la, la, landing Please, oh, oh, won't you return? Feel, see your blue lights are flashing You and your alien arms
Deep in the forest I whirl like I did as a little girl Let my eyes rise in the sky looking for you Oh, you know, I would go anywhere at all 'Cause no star is too far with you, with you....
Keeping in mind she wrote this song in 1976, the lyrics fit David's turn as the Tenth Doctor with eerie clairvoyance!
And because she is the queen she is, she adds a sly little comment: "So come for me, David. I know I'm an older woman, but I know so many things."
One wonders what David thought about this. I've no doubt someone in his circle alerted him to Patti's dedication, because how could they not? And as an aside - his interaction with me about Patti Smith was about nine months before she did this dedication to him. So not only was he aware of her as the music connoisseur he is, the fact her name sprung immediately to his mind when speaking to me has always made me think he's a fan.
He probably blushed. Deeply. Well played, Patti. Well played.

The bad kids and whether they would be into superwholock
(with supernatural info from @fatally-addicted-to-fiction)
so the bad kids all love doctor who and watch it together but imma be prescribing their fav doctor
Riz: 100% this man is into sherlock but just because he hates it so much. All the plot holes in the mysteries drive him mad and he has his own conspiracy board for the plot lines. For supernatural he would skip all the plot episodes and only watch the filler case solving episodes. He would then realize he needs the whole picture and watch the entire 15 seasons. His fav doctor is david tennents because he does the most mystery solving.
Fig: Only know about sherlock from Riz's deranged ramblings but ships Jonlock. Fig recommended supernatural to Riz but has only watched the earlier 'edgy' seasons. Her fav doctor would def be Tennant or Capaldi due to their "i don't wear my heart on my sleeve but i do" attitude.
Kristen: Again only know sherlock from Riz and Adaine but ships jonlock and makes weird edits of them to show Riz who hates it. She loves supernatural- the biggest destiel shipper ever and has frequent arguments with Riz over whether it's canon (Riz thinks it totally normal to be so devoted to your best friend you would go to superhell). The biggest Matt smith fan, buys a fez, won't stop wearing the fez, the bad kids have to stage an intervention
Adaine: Also into sherlock but just sorta watches it in the background while she does other stuff. Like to try and solve the mysteries with Riz and hates what a pretentious prick Sherlock is in the later seasons. Adaine watches supernatural with Fig, Kristen, Riz, Jawbone, Sandra-Lynn and Ayda at mordered manor and really connects with the found family aspect. Casual fan. Her favourite doctor is Jodie whittaker and hates her shitty writing but she says her favourtie is Ecclestone cause hes her second fav.
Fabian: Not into sherlock at all, thinks it's for nerds like the ball. Same with supernatural but after seeing a few of the fight scenes he watches a few episodes alone in his giant house so he can feel connected to his friends and know what they are talking about. His favourite doctor is matt smith and peter capaldi for reasons
Gorgug: Watched season one but didnt go any further. Really likes the mark of cain arc and sees a lot of himself in castiel. He's just sorta vibing with the others who watch it. His favourite doctor is Tennat as he has more gadgets.

I’ve only recently been watching GO bts and honestly I’m glad I didn’t watch it at the time the first season came out. If I’d watched MS spend every minute of those interviews beaming heart eyes at David and going ‘isn’t he amazing 😍’ while David responds with what looks like a completely normal level of ‘I liked working with my costar :)’, I think I’d have felt considerable second-hand embarrassment.
Whereas now I get to watch knowing that is not a man who is to be pitied. Those are the eyes of a man who knows what he wants and what he already had and is envisioning the future with perfect accuracy.
I went through the entire go season 1 press cycle like “aww Michael Sheen has a little work crush on David Tennant, who seems to like him a normal amount and well work crushes fade.” If only 2019 me had known about David Tennant name dropping Michael Sheen as a great actor since at least 2005 and visiting him post Frost-Nixon and calling him for advice on “look back in anger.” If only 2019 me had known David Tennant would be the one to reach out to Michael Sheen to make a little pandemic zoom show. It’s literally like…look at us? Who would have thought? Not me

David Tennant’s Cover of Sunshine on Leith Is Actually Really Good
So I actually listened to bits and pieces from the entire Children In Need- We’ve Got It Covered album, and… David is kind of one of the only people on there who sounds like he knows what he’s doing? For one thing, he’s one of the ONLY people they don't autotune to high heaven, AND he doesn’t sound like he’s bored! Like the album is full of fantastic actors but most of them don't really know how to translate their acting abilities to singing. But David genuinely puts a lot of heart and emotion into his cover, and his voice has so much texture and character- he’s got a lovely vibrato and the perfect folksy, unpolished timbre for a song like this.
David’s a huge proclaimers fan, so clearly this is a song he loves. It’s actually a rather difficult song to make engaging, because it’s quite repetitive, but david does a great job giving each repeated phrase a slightly different flavor. He’ll do a soft, gentle “my tears are dryin,” then when he sings it again, his voice will tremble as he raises in volume- it’s a genuinely moving vocal.
This isn’t just me being a biased fangirl- I’m a musical theatre major, I know my shit! And I love this cover, I listen to it all the time! In terms of actors who aren’t trained vocalists, I’d give David around a 7.5- what he lacks in technical skill he’s more than capable of making up for in feeling with the right material. I honestly jsut really want to see David do a musical or a role involving music in some capacity, because his performances are so like music to me!

Broadchurch was too slow and too sad, so I got high and tried watching it again, which made it significantly better, and now I'm on season 2 episode 2. I'm fucking frustrated that this case is dragging on, especially since I have past trauma of a similar (but less deadly) nature to Danny Latimer. Also, I figured out tje killer was Ellie's husband by episode 6.
Also, yay heart arrhythmia representation. You almost never see it. However, overall, Broadchurch is not a show made for me.
But i have to watch all of it b3cause my New Year resolution was to watch David Tennant's entire filmography.
I LOOVE broadchurch I personally genuinely couldn't stop watching it on my first watch
I remember setting my alarm earlier so that I could watch the start of an episode before school.... and also watching it on the way to school... and hiding in the school library struggling to get it to load because I was so desperate to find out what happened next
Everyone's tastes are different, though. Have you watched Around the World in 80 Days yet? It's quite serious as well and has got sad and emotional moments but it goes much quicker and has an overall much lighter tone, with quite a few funny moments, so you might enjoy that a bit more. If you haven't watched it yet, that is
Another quite light-hearted DT show is There She Goes, which I barely see anybody talking about. I'm not sure if you've seen it, but it's very good. It's a lot more slice-of-lifey and almost sitcom-y than Broadchurch/ATWI80D, with a formulaic sort of structure, but I found it quite endearing and enjoyable. It's got some very sad moments (such as DT's character crying to his absentee father), but they're paired with lots of light stuff.
I wish you luck on your resolution :)

Can you explain the new doctor who stuff to someone who has never watched doctor who before?
Ooh I can try?
Background:
The Doctor is a Time Lord, a powerful time-traveling alien. There are other Time Lords but they're not usually around and when they are it's not good. He travels the universe, and time, in the TARDIS, which looks like an old-fashioned British police call box on the outside but is massive on the inside. The Doctor is also kind of bad at controlling where it ends up. Every time the Doctor dies, he regenerates, but keeps all his memories. This happens every time the character is recast. The Doctor's gender is not fixed, the previous regeneration was a woman, but he's mostly been portrayed and written about as a man over the years so I'm using he/him for simplicity. David Tennant is one of my most beloved portrayals of the Doctor since the show was revived in 2005 and he returned for three specials to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the show. In-universe, the Doctor regenerated into the same body he'd had a couple regenerations ago, and he does not yet know why (we'll probably find out in the last special).
The Doctor also travels with friends, called companions. One of the most beloved companions of the revived show is Donna Noble, a loud, abrasive, middle class woman who has trouble holding down temp jobs, and turns out to kind, compassionate, and brilliant. Her relationship with the Doctor is completely platonic. Companions have to be written off the show eventually, and it's often in heart-wrenching ways. Donna was involved in some scifi mumboj-umbo called the metacrisis, which basically gave her a special connection to the Doctor and some Time Lord powers (mostly intelligence). Because her body is human, the power was killing her, so in order to save her life the Doctor wiped her memory of him and all their adventures. Donna met and married a wonderful man and had a child, but the Doctor could never see her again, because if she remembered him she would die. However, Donna also came back to celebrate the 60th anniversary. These specials are were created by Russell T Davies, the writer who revived Doctor Who in 2005 and ran the show until he left at the same time David Tennant did. He's now coming back to run the show again. He has a distinct style that a lot of fans really respond to, although the other two show runners who have been in charge in the meantime have fans as well.
The new Doctor Who stuff:
About 15 years after wiping Donna's memory, the Doctor regenerated back into David Tennant and the TARDIS immediately landed on a street, where he ran into Donna, who fortunately did not immediately recognize him. Donna called for Rose, which freaked him out because Rose was the name of the first companion in the revived Doctor Who, the Doctor's love interest, who was permanently trapped in a parallel universe. Donna knew about this and even met Rose during a big finale. It turns out the Rose Donna was calling for was her daughter. Rose is also trans and chose the name Rose for herself, and Donna got very protective against some transphobic bullies.
There was an alien threat in London (again) and in the course of investigating, the Doctor wound up at Donna's house, where Rose was harboring a deceptively adorable alien called the Meep. In order to save the entire city of London from the adorable but evil Meep, the Doctor was forced to restore Donna's memory so they could use their combined abilities. They succeeded, but Donna passed out, however she quickly recovered. It turns out that when she had a child, some of the Time Lord power stuff got passed down, so it's now shared between her and her daughter. Rose's choice of name as well as some of her hobbies were influenced by subconscious memories of TARDIS adventures. There's a whole little bit about how the Doctor is male (David Tennant's Doctor), female (Donna), and "neither and more," (Rose, who is a nonbinary trans girl). It's incredibly silly and campy and very fun and the whole episode is just very pro-trans which is nice. In the end, Donna and Rose are able to let the Time Lord power go and retain their memories. Donna is not planning to return to traveling with the Doctor, as she now has a family, but she gets in the TARDIS for "one last trip" and spills coffee on the controls, making the TARDIS go haywire and ultimately getting the Doctor and Donna stranded on a spaceship at the edge of the universe.
In the second special they had a very creepy adventure on the spaceship featuring "not things" taking their shape. They finally made it back to Earth at the end, only to find humanity going violently insane, setting up the plot of the third special, which we will see soon! They also got to see Donna's grandfather, Wilf, who was himself a beloved companion. Wilf's actor, Bernard Cribbins, died recently, but he filmed this scene before he died, so fans were really overjoyed and emotional to see him one last time.
The second special also had a scene at the beginning featuring Isaac Newton, who was played by a brown actor, and later had Donna and the Doctor agreeing he was hot and a line confirming the Doctor is not straight. There's been subtext about the Doctor being queer for a very long time, he was kissed by a canonically omnisexual male companion, and the previous Doctor, who was a woman, had ship tease with her female companion, but this line was a bit more direct and overt about a male Doctor liking men than most of what's been included before. These two things, along with the pro-trans stuff in the first special, have the right throwing a tantrum about Doctor Who going "woke" which is just kind of hilarious.
At the end of the last special the Doctor is regenerating into his newest form, played by Ncuti Gatwa. Davies is staying to run the show, but Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor and his companion will be new.
tl;dr: beloved actors and show runner return for specials that have been really good, well-written, good mix of practical and computer effects, and fun pro-trans stuff in the first special, so Doctor Who fans are happy.

What on earth is going on?
I’ve been pondering for weeks now how in heaven, hell or earth, Good Omens season 2 has turned on some switch in my brain that means I'm suddenly expending way too much mental energy on analysing the fictional relationship between an angel and a demon, reading fan fic for the first time, and entirely unable to draw anything other than David Tennant and Michael Sheen's faces? Have I joined a fandom somehow?  I guess I must have since I'm here (hi by the way - I’m still new here).
I mean clearly my ADHD addled brain has decided this is where the dopamine is at right now. But why? And so suddenly? And so intensely? I've certainly fallen harder than my average hyperfocus fixation and I'm still here like 2 months later. Last time this happened was when I discovered Lord of the Rings in high school.
I have a suspicion that magic has been worked somewhere in the beautiful combination of Neil and Terry’s wonderful writing (both already perilously close to my heart) with those two fabulous actors who have so convincingly and lovingly brought the characters to life.
It's fundamentally a light hearted concept: one angel and one demon who share common experiences over 6000 years of human history, and are bound together by it. Oh and they have to save the world.
But this is layered with such a rich complexity of character, perspective, and motivation; a mingling of flaws and virtues, trauma and joy. All visible in Crowley and Aziraphale, and yet also obscured from sight in the way that the real internal life of everyone we love is never truly knowable. You know things are happening beneath the surface and you can guess and infer and try to analyse, but we can't truly access those mysteries.
My mind is addicted to trying to solve the puzzle of this demon and this angel and what they mean to each other, and what that might tell me about love and life and what it is to be human, and the divinity within us all.

i’m so glad this season is described as “just vibes” with less spiderwebbing plot-lines. the only part of GO i was interested in (and this might just be my Gay Agenda talking) was crowley and aziraphale. i had little interest in any of the other characters just because the relationship between those guys and actors was so strong and well crafted; it made anything else seem mundane. i skip through the whole adam and anathema and witchfinder arcs during rewatches just because they’re not all that interesting; not in comparison.
i’m so excited for this season because they Know what we want as fans and are willing to put it to screen. and personally i can’t wait to see michael and david explore intimacy in a way that we not only didn’t expect (queer media trauma is real folks) but also just assumed we’d never actually get. most people were used to the bare ass minimum until indisputable and thoughtful queer media started coming out.
this sounds so cheesy but it shaped me into a better person, getting to see queer people be intimate on screen. it normalized something i’ve been trying to manifest my entire conscious life (no literally) through fan works and especially fan fiction.
additionally hollywood loves thin and traditionally attractive people. ofmd and good omens have totally turned that on its head and i feel like there’s a greater appreciation and acceptance of normal bodies being represented on screen. this is just speculation but i suspect michael sheen and rhys darby specifically never had a fandom advocate so hard for them at such a life stage. and i feel really happy that they do get to experience that as a demographic (older people) that often gets told that they lose their value because they’ve aged, and thus become less marketable.
you see this when people draw the boys all skinny and hot and young; something i’m not gonna write to the president about but it’s clear that people depicting them to fit the hollywood standard is a reflection of their own perception of beauty. so i don’t care for all this talk about “oh that outfit is so ugly!” or “his beard is weird” because LMAO my outfits have been ugly! if i had a beard, i would make questionable fashion choices! (personally i love crowley’s looks, they’re goofy and fun and fit the vibe of the show, i think it’s pointless even arguing about their personal aesthetics so long as they fit the context and their characters. david tennant can’t always be a smoking hot twink, guys. let him be silly and goofy for my heart’s sake please).
i guarantee if crowley and aziraphale end up kissing and it’s not the most Perfect queer standard camera angle, folks are gonna complain about it, because everyone on screen must be Pretty and Profitable but also Realistic and Relatable. bit of a double standard, no?
that’s why i love that david and michael get to be praised for their physical appearances and i’m no middle aged man but it feels like a door has opened in a way? in myself via the barriers of insecurity and dysmorphia, as well as in some widening sectors of queer society, because it shows that nontraditionally attractive queer people (aka people without abs or a perfect jawline, aka me lol) are fully capable of loving and being loved and being HAPPY and accepted. it makes me so so so joyous. anyway there’s my rant; y’all know i ain’t sleeping till s2 drops tomorrow. i’m HYPED!!!

David Tennant's Early Work: the short film 'Bite'
My normal David Tennant thread heads in a new direction: to one of his rare first performances on film as opposed to TV and theatre: the short film Bite. I've got personal history with this short, so it's dear to my heart.
Bite is one of DT's long-lost gems. Most of his fans know it exists, but few have seen it. It was produced by Su Bainbridge and written by Andrea Gibb, who DT fans may recognize as the author of the brilliant DT audio Sunburst Finish. Paddy Cunneen, who also wrote the music for The Pillowman, was its musical composer. Directed by Brian Ross and with a running time of 6:58, Bite was produced on 16mm film and screened at the Edinburgh Film Festival in 1997. It was broadcast in Nov 1997 as part of an STV arts program called Don’t Look Down.
But what is Bite about? "Bite is a film about Alistair Galbraith, a passive postman who tires of being a spectator in his own life and decides to take control. When Alistair’s wife, Alison, commits adultery on their wedding day and shortly afterwards he is savaged by a ferocious dog, Alistair hits rock bottom, unable to cope with even the most undemanding of life’s tasks. From the depths of despair, he is galvanized into action and in true anti-hero style sets out to take revenge on those who have wronged him. Through taking this action, he is re-born."
David played Alastair Galbraith and his wife, Alison, was played by Sharon Small, who recently reunited with David onstage in the play, Good.
At this juncture everyone usually asks, "Can I see it?" Yep! You can reserve a viewing time if you're close to the Moving Image Archive in Glasgow, as a copy is held for private and research viewing only. And I'm pretty sure it's available, either directly or indirectly, because of me!
But before I get into that (it's the personal aspect I talked about earlier) here’s a bit of Bite you can see. The film's editor, Gary Scott, has a :44 extract of the film online right here!
ALSO - SPOILER ALERT - If you're interested in a blow-by-blow spoilery summation of 'Bite' because you can't visit Glasgow to see the short, here's a detailed plot summation.
Tumblr media
And now: how I wheedled it so Bite became available to view.
When I discovered back in 2014 that a copy of Bite was archived at the Scottish Screen Archive (now the Moving Image Archive) but not available - while his earlier short film SPACES was? - it made me wonder why, so I made inquiries at the archive to see why. It turned out SPACES had a viewable copy, but the copy of Bite in the archive was still on 16mm.
Now, this would've stopped any ordinary human being.
I am not an ordinary human being.
I was not a professional archivist then but I am now. The decision to become one this late in my life is partially due to my love of knowledge, organization and research, but also to my experiences since becoming - basically - an archivist and researcher with regards to DT's body of work. These things combined makes me rather dogged when there’s something I wish to attain.
I learned Bite was on 16mm and they couldn't make a viewing copy. Why? Because it was in copyright. And even funnier? They didn't know who held the rights! But I thought it should be available, so - even though I'm in the US and everyone else was in the UK - I decided to try and make that happen.
Archive personnel suggested I ask Creative Scotland about the rights, who suggested I ask the film’s production company. I was told it was rumored they had a VHS/beta copy of the film. I contacted each and every one of them to find out if this was true.
After months of back-and-forth emailing with the production company and soldiering on even through staffing rotations and I had to retell my entire story of the hunt again and again, I was still in a state of limbo. Finally the production company said they for sure did not have a copy of it but they could begin to negotiate with the National Library of Scotland for one. A few months later they learned they'd be able to procure a copy, but it would cost them X amount for a post-production company to digitize the 16mm, etc., etc.
Progress, right? Frankly, it felt like a scene in a comedy, as each thread in this chain of people needed to make their own copy in this format by this company for this archive or that person or...you get the gist. And no one could tell me if it would actually get done. So I kept reaching out. To make a ridiculously long story short, one full YEAR afterwards, the archive finally managed to obtain a copy that was viewable for others to view onsite!
That was a reward in and of itself. An obscure piece of David's body of work had been pulled from its original 16mm - where it might have languished forever - and preserved on a format available to us today. But I got a few tangible rewards, too. One, an email from the production company's owner that made me laugh harder than I'd laughed for a while: "Feck my old tin boots! I’ve just looked at who we cast in that film!"
Yes, sir. You DID cast David Tennant! Indeed you did!
And two, my very own copy of Bite (which, of course, I had to sign my life away for!) I got permission to release some screen shots, but that was it. And while it felt like an acknowledgement, I'm really just pleased we rescued it.
Tumblr media
I took my copy to a convention DT was attending, and when I laid it down, he immediately looked up at me. "How - and where - did you get THAT?"
I laughed. "Persistence?"
He laughed and shook his head. "I hadn't thought of that one in a while. I remember that dog."
"You were a great postman."
And he was.
Lastly, I thought I should post some new screenshots. Sorry they're not great quality, but neither is my copy.

So I'll start with the fact that I am, indeed, a fan of Chibnall's era. I am an even bigger fan of the 13th Doctor. I'll also start with the fact that I quite literally grew up with RTD's writing and loved Ten with all my heart. But now I am an adult and some of RTD's writing has left me a bit scared. Here's my "live streaming" review on The Star Beast. SPOILERS BELOW!
I'm going in order of how I processed things, so it's gonna be chaotic. My first essay is this: You know why this post is so long? It's because we're not livestreaming things anymore. I'm not immediately with other fans in real time, typing out our little posts. I'm quite literally doing this at my leisure. I'll miss watching DW live. Now then, in order! 1. The music? Ten out of ten. I have always loved Gold's compositions and he did not let us down. And this opinion is only being generated from the new(er) theme song. Which leads me to...
2. Look at the B U D G E T. Even the opening credits has a budget that you can just FEEL. Those stars/galaxies? Very nice... And then I have to chuckle over the low level lighting / 2000s era effects of David Tennant's full profile voiceover of Donna and his story.
3. Him taking the boxes, seeing Donna's face, and slowly putting the boxes back is an RTD special and I LOVE that kind of comedy. It just makes me chuckle. And then him having a full blown panic over hearing Donna shout "Rose!" which... 4. Having these little call back moments feels rather bitter since we're calling this a reboot of the show. UNLESS the reboot is when Nucti starts up? But the fact that I'm confused just shows how bitter I should be. Again, my Chibnall love is showing. I don't believe in yet another reboot for DW, but that's a marketing thing over anything else... I hope. 5. I'm glad the 2000s Rose/Doctor shipping era lives strong through the name Rose. I know those fans are going to be happy and they deserve it. 6. NOW... Donna having a family. Okay. I'll have a separate post but... Does anyone else think that Donna having a husband just doesn't fit for her? Especially with her memories erased? Idk, I just never envisioned Donna getting married after the whole Lance thing. BUT I'm glad she's happy and the husband seems so nice. 7. Donna giving up that lottery money? Also strange considering she lost her memories. The first time we meet Donna we get this feeling that she's a bit shallow, which makes sense because she has to develop as a character. That was her character development so here KEEPING the money would have made more sense here. Which...
8. Rose. That's all. She's great!
9. Hey, can't help but notice, but when did the 14th Doctor have time to make a new screwdriver, huh? What gives? AND - AND there's not a single hint of 13's sonic on there. HMM. What the heck!
10. FORGOT SOMETHING. Whatever the line was "that says mistress" "Oh, catch up, will you?" I don't know how to take in this scene quite yet, but it's making me pause. It felt... Off kilter. Maybe cause I love 13 so much, I don't know. There's always callbacks to other faces when the Doctor first regenerations, but this felt... Wrong? Also, TEE HEE my mind went to Missy IMMEDIATELY and I love that little connection my fic writing brain is going wild.
11. WHY DOES UNIT HAVE SO MUCH MONEY???? Look at this uniforms, holy cow! I almost don't like it? Like, they're an underground agency. WE JUST SAW THEM GET DESTROYED BY CYBERMEN IN THE POWER OF THE DOCTOR. Are we just ignore that entire episode or...?
12. Donna not being able to keep a job? Yeah, THAT one I believe haha.
13. "I will burn down the world for you, darling" says Donna Noble to her transgender kid. WHICH IS AMAZING, WHICH MADE ME SMILE SO WIDE I WAS HAVING A PARTY IN MY BRAIN. There's my Donna! 14. "Gramps used to talk about flying saucers" oh god my heart. I teared up a little, not going to lie. Wilf, I think about you every single day. You made the Doctor the person he is today.
15. MEEP IS SO CUTE. OH WOW. I know "evil" is coming but SO CUTE RIGHT NOW.
16. To go from some excellent animatronics from the Meep to whatever those alien, fly things are was HILARIOUS. What, we'd run out of money for those costume's? Were they meant to look like a typical RTD alien back in the 2000s? How does that work?
17. WHAT THE ACTUAL FLYING FUCK WAS THE SONIC DOING. Wait, did Disney give the sonic some magical powers? Why are we suddenly writing in the air? How are we getting readouts of the ship from the sonic like that? Could it do that before? Why would we not do that before? I'm dying that's so funny.
18. Shirley seems cool!!! I hope we get more of her! And I love the nod to PROPER representation. Chibs did a good job of that as well. Edit: REAL representation! Good on RTD. The scene with the stairs and she says "don't make me the problem"... I am not a wheelchair user but I do hope that was properly done. 19. "I absolutely love her [Donna]" LOOK AT 14 HAVING FEELINGS! Aww, I hope 15 follows through with the feelings! 11, 12, and 13 have been so locked up, so scared to love... Having a Doctor that's ready to loudly embrace their love for things would be such a good character development. (My fear would be RTD ripping that away in the most tragic way possible, but that's a future problem I suppose).
20. I'm at the scene where Rose is talking to the Meep in the shed, and just, again, THE MUSIC. We did have some good musical moments in 13's era but, even I have to admit, nothing as pretty as this. It really is something, round of applause once again.
21. LISTEN. L I S T E N. I don't condone slapping the Doctor. I don't. In fact, it's wrong. It's very wrong. And you can't slap 13, can you? So slapping 14 shouldn't make sense. It's the definition of sexist. It's just not something you should do. BUT. B U T. Jackie's "stitch this, mate" is always in my head and now THIS "here we go again" after Sylvia gives the Doctor a good slap... I laughed, okay? It was funny! But really, in the good year of 2023, there shouldn't be comedy like that. That joke should have died. BUT I LAUGHED. So I'm to blame as well.
22. "Never mind about the ferret from mars." I LOVE the mars callback from Donna, thank you very much.
23. Kate looking after Wilf damn near brought tears to my eyes. Kate, you are the real hero of the DW universe. Thank you.
24. This is... This is gonna be another post. But. Okay. So. The whole "you're assuming he as a pronoun". Right. Okay. I know groups of people that talk like that. Both online and in person. Personal life spoiler, I work(ed) in musical theater. I've seen it all. I, personally, do not like this whole... "Let's be really obvious about it" thing. And also highly believe in someone else first telling me, when it fits, what their pronouns are. Having someone pull the defensive "YOU ASSUMED" crap doesn't work because humans don't think like that. It's a whole other rant, but yeah. This felt forced and I hate when shows do that. Representation is important but FORCING that representation doesn't help.
25. what's the. what's the sonic doing. what. how'd it. we got lines in the air. we got unbelievable shield. we. he waved it like a wand and now. what the. how'd. (Yo, not me head cannoning that this is 13 banging around in 14's head demanding that they have a better way to protect their friends. Love it). I WILL HAVE A LOT MORE THOUGHTS ON THIS.
26. DW has money now. That will continue to blow my mind.
27. "This is a sonic screwdriver and if it's good at one thing, it's resonating concrete". Oh yeah, Doctor? I'd like to bring forth you, never once, being able to do it. Not once! (And now it's good at creating magical shields and complex, alien holograms, but that's point #25)
28. Where'd in hell's name did he get that wig and how soon can Donna throw it out a window?
29. MEEP YOU - YOU UTTER AHOLE. Man, it was SO CUTE
30. O k a y. I take back, holy crap what point am I on? I take back point #7. So there's some of the Doctor left in her, eh? That's why! I dig that. I really, really dig that. Sorry for being a downer, that was my mistake.
31. I too can come up with technobabble bullcrap that means nothing. I sometimes think that's RTD's biggest failing, his incessant need to over describe things. EDIT. JEEZ, a good five minutes later as we're STILL talking gibberish.
32. Hey, I see you "glass wall between Donna and the Doctor" and raise you "glass wall between Wilf and the Doctor". OW. I demand emotional compensation!
33. Listen, I just got over 13 keeping every. single. emotion inside of her. She never raised her voice, she never really cried, she never had a chance to just scream and yell and be angry at the universe. The fact that there's 14 RIGHT HERE, screaming, because to save Donna, he has to lose her YET AGAIN. Just angry and devastated and grieving... It's a stunning scene, it's a scene that makes sense, but my 13 loving little heart says that this is 13's moment to be angry and it was taken from her.
34. Also, ha, I know Disney bought DW, but did we just "Winter Soldier" Donna Noble. We gave her trigger words to keep her memories at bay? Really?
35. "Hold on a minute," said in Ten's/Fourteenth's voice... Was that.. Was that ELVEN'S theme music while Donna was being, well, Time Lady Donna? Because that was... That was GOLDEN. How amazing is that? What a great idea!
36. You MONSTER, RTD, making Fourteen hold Donna the same way he held the Master? What the hell is that about?
37. The.. The nonbinary, but binary. I... It's... Something! Okay, I'll get there. I'll have a post about it. Maybe. But. Yeah, it's something!
38. DOES UNIT HAVE AVENGERS *cough* sorry it's been a while for Marvel me *cough* STARK TOWER. WAS THAT STARK TOWER? Damn, Disney, you really did bring us back to superwholock Avenger's "Clint in the vents" era, huh?
39. "It's a shame you're not a woman anymore, because she would have understood... Something a male presenting Time Lord will never understand." You can't... You can't do the whole "nonbinary" thing and that just immediately point out gender like that. What. The defeats the entire purpose. The whole point you're trying to make is that gender DOESN'T matter, and yet... And the Doctor has always, always been nonbinary. I refer to the Doctor as "they" when speaking as a collective whole, and many of us have done that. I use pronouns when talking about specific Doctors because humans have always used pronouns. Again, 11 and 13 have made mention that gender has NEVER mattered to them. I just... You can't be poking a bear and then expecting the bear to not to come after you if you've changed the poking object from a stick to a teaser.
40. I gotta laugh that Rose and Donna had the most peaceful "regeneration" we've ever seen. Somewhere in there, a Doctor or two is screaming lol.
41. Oh... The TARDIS is ugly. DON'T HIT ME. STOP HITTING ME. I MEAN It. Not, for real though, Oh my god, what. Why. The colors. Or lack of colors, really. What the fuck. Where's the... Where's the personality? Where's the sass? I've loved every single TARDIS change but THIS... This is a hard one to swallow.
42. The TARDIS having an shit fit over Donna spilling coffee on her is WONDERFUL. That's so funny to me. With everything she's been through with 13, that was just the best way for her to get her revenge! All in all, strange episode, yeah? I mean, what WAS that plot? It was really more of setup for the next episode, and double really meant to reunite ten and Donna, which was well done, but also... Why? It just felt a bit all over the place but very much cushioned by nostalgia. I'm done now. My fingers HURT. As always, and as I say in all my fics, I'm here if you want to chat. Reblog this, PM me, tag me in stuff!

Whew, I finished my fuck-a-thon fic!
I struggled with deciding what to do because I genuinely change my mind on how I see their first time so often, but I decided to kind of go with what I imagine would most realistically happen. Taking things David Tennant, RTD and scripts have said into account. I hope you like it 💗
rated e (obviously), first time, porn with feelings.
Rose has hardwood floors.
That's the first thing he notices when they step into her flat.
(Or is it their flat now?)
The second thing he notices, when Rose switches on the light, is how bare it is. It's not a large area, not by any means, but the lack of furniture makes it appear so. A sofa, small table and a flat screen tv. Is that what her life had been reduced to? He had hoped, so deeply that it had begun to feel true, that despite his emptiness without her that she had found her way to happiness without him.
It's an odd combination of sadness and relief to see that had not been the case.
The wood creaks slightly underneath his shoes as he steps further in, drawn to the massive bay windows that seem to almost wrap around the entire space.
The sun had already set when they'd arrived, and the city twinkles in the distance.
"It's not much, I know. But I wasn't planning on coming back."
He turns, his single heart still doing aerobics at the sound of her voice, and realizes this is the first time they have been truly alone since he had been dying on that deserted street. He doesn't know what he expected to happen. All he remembers now is how right it felt to die in her arms if it meant he got to see her smile one last time.

An analysis on ineffable parallels and scene use
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Crowley’s expression says the same thing in both scenes, but with completely different moods.
His Aziraphale, don’t do this (hopeful, I can still show you: let me bother) and his Aziraphale, don't do this (there's no point, my last breath: why bother)
Crowley in the first shot: Seems more annoyed than heartbroken towards Aziraphale. Maybe even disappointed.
He just wants his angel, and if he were to actually talk, I bet there’d be a “Please, come back, let’s talk this out.” He believes he can still convince Azi to ditch and run away with him. He understands Azi is turning him down, but maybe there’s still hope for the two of them. For now, “This bastard (>:|) won’t listen.”
Tumblr media
The exasperated head tilt. “Why are you saying this angel? Look at what you’re doing.”  Crowley doesn't quite understand why Azirahale is so insistent on heaven. So he thinks he can still save him. He can still get him out. If only he would cooperate.
Crowley in the second shot:
First off, he’s absolutely devastated, heart broken, but let's put that aside.
Crowley is sort of having a “woke’ moment. An epiphany. I hate to call it childish, but he lost his childish hope. He realizes right here Aziraphale’s situation. He’s really understanding right now that Aziraphale won’t leave heaven. (Could he be thinking he’s not good enough for Azi to stay? That’s for another day). I see Crowley seeing the grasp heaven still has on him. “This bastard (<3) can’t listen.”
Tumblr media
That little look to the side, and the eyebrow twitch? Even the little sigh. The sad look away. The judging “eugh”.  That’s a “He’s gone. It’s heaven.”  (David Tennant’s fucking amazing)
There is no hope left in this man. He looks empty. He poured everything he ha left into that kiss. Maybe there isn’t hope for Azi, maybe he can’t be saved. This is the end. “Don’t bother,” and he walks out. There is nothing left here.
Crowley won’t abandon his angel, but at the moment, the trauma of heaven and the heartbreak of losing Aziraphale is too much for him.
Let me also mention lighting. In the first scene, it's very cool toned, they're outside, It’s bright, and open, they're in public. The setting has a lighter, airy feel to it. And as a viewer it implies a climax, or an issue to be solved. There is room to move from this point.
In the second scene, it’s warmer, they're in the bookshop, it’s more cozy sort of. They have a more private setting. Things are settled/settling. It's the kind of scene that is the end, maybe a fade to black, a roll credits. It feels more resolved than the previous peak. Similar to Crowley's hope, and his acceptance.
Also, Every stage direction is the same: Aziraphale delivers his "I forgive you" and then we switch to Crowley's reaction. There is only difference in that they are on opposite sides of the screen.
As for Aziraphale:
The first “I forgive you” is (like the lighting) open. His whole heart is on his sleeve. Let me tell you these comfortable words, because it is what we know, it’s how i'm showing you my love. Take it?
And the second is flat. There's so much emotion there, but it comes out in a melh way, because of how Azi processes it. I totes believe he almost says "I love you" but backs out. He instead chooses his signature line, because its more familiar (comfortable). His heart is crushed, lying there in a puddle. Let me tell you these comfortable words, because I want to show you that I’m still me and you’re still you, I have nothing else for you. Take it.
Tumblr media
Look at this expression right here. Hey crowley! My words <3. They're open, bright, and hopeful.
Tumblr media
This one, almost spiteful. Crowley, my words. Why would you do this to me.
In Aziraphale’s delivery, Crowley's reaction and scene set up, what is the same on paper, becomes two scenes with entirely different meanings.

Okay, rewatch complete and my feelings are just so *mixed*. When I was halfway through, I wrote this whole thing about the weak plot and bad pacing, but having watched episodes 4-6 in one sitting today, I’m now feeling much better about it. In fact, the emotions of the last scene were even more hard hitting this time, and I no longer have as much of a character issue with Aziraphale’s decision as I did my first time through.
To get my bad thoughts, all written yesterday, out of the way:
The plot is so weak and the pacing is all over the place. What is series 2 about? Crowley and Aziraphale take in an angel who has lost his memory, they successfully hide him for a few episodes while trying to set up two shopkeepers, then we find out what was going on. The End. Series 1 works because we get all this amazing character stuff for Aziraphale and Crowley on top of an engaging romp about the end of the world, with a huge cast of characters and lots of moving parts that all come together at the end for a satisfying finale.
I found episode 3 a particular slog, which is a shame because I do actually like the Georgian setting of the flashbacks, but it gets very flimsy very quickly. I just don't believe Elspeth's sudden desire to kill herself (with an apparent sudden change of heart re: bodysnatching, since she says she doesn't want anyone digging her up), then another sudden turnaround once she's been given the money. I liked the general message they were going for wrt poverty and Aziraphale's ignorance of how the world really works, but it just doesn't quite work for me.
I also don’t buy into Nina and Maggie at all. If it was established that they knew each other a little already, then it might work, but Maggie’s deep investment in Nina liking her just reads as either overbearing or unbelievable. They’ve clearly never spoken about anything other than coffee before, and Maggie has a crush fair enough, but after one somewhat awkward evening locked in a shop, she’s crying and declaring herself in love. I like both of the actresses, but I’m not sure they completely sold it either. (I feel bad pointing out particular instances, but when Maggie’s “crying” when Aziraphale goes to ask about the song, she doesn’t even believably read as upset, let alone crying.)
There's also just the, fanfic-ness of it all, especially with Gabriel and Beelzebub. I've always seen that pairing as a bit of a crack one, though I'm glad there are people who enjoy it, and for it to become canon like that... Maybe if they were still bitches at the end? But the mushy lovey dovey 'wherever [they are] is my heaven/hell' stuff just doesn't read as in character for either of them. It's like they switch into totally different characters at the relationship reveal (though on the rewatch, I did appreciate knowing why Beelzebub was so keen on finding Gabriel).
Really the main things this series has going for it is, firstly, that it is often pretty funny, and, secondly, the chemistry between David Tennant and Michael Sheen, on top of their individually brilliant performances. I am deeply invested in their relationship at this point, as well as the wider implications for Heaven and Hell, but if I weren’t I don’t know that I would be all that excited for series 3.
I do think series 3 will be better, as this was always described as the series that got us to where series 3 needed to start from, but this is so obviously a filler that it’s hard to see why it was made in the first place. I imagine we needed that break up scene at the end to lead into the final series, but I wonder if that couldn’t have been achieved with a special, or honestly if we couldn’t have just found out what happened through flashbacks within series 3 itself.
Now, onto the good, written today:
The second half of the series is actually much more enjoyable. I adore the entire conceit of having a Regency ball, and it works so well alongside the gathering menace of the swarming demons. I also love the entirety of the 1941 flashback, even if it doesn’t have much to do with the main plot - sidenote, but the thing of calling the flashbacks ‘minisodes’ is very odd given that they often take up the vast majority of their respective episodes.
Now that I was expecting the Gabriel and Beelzebub stuff, it wasn't quite as jarring as the first time. I stand by what I said above about the out of character-ness, though.
The Nina and Maggie of episodes 4-6 are also much more believable, because they're actually talking. They're taking part in the main plot, too, and they get to have agency at the end and tell Crowley off for trying to manipulate their love lives.
As said above, this time the entire final scene between Aziraphale and Crowley packed an even bigger punch. I loved it the first time round, though of course I found it devastating, but this time knowing where it was leading, it hit me all the more. It’s a real showcase of both Michael Sheen and David Tennant’s acting chops, as well as the complex relationship between their characters.
Derek Jacobi, master that he is, is of course completely fantastic as the Metatron. I wonder if he’ll have a bigger role in series 3 (if we get it). I really hope so; I’m always delighted to see more of him. Muriel is so adorable as well, and I find the rivalry between Uriel and Michael so enjoyable.
This series is such a mixed bag and I just cannot settle on a consistent opinion. I think perhaps it would have fared better with either a more complex plot, or fewer episodes. I’ll probably do another rewatch soon, but on a much slower episode-by-episode basis.

HAHA this makes me so happy! Yeah , I do tend to gravitate to the classics- I love things that stand the test of time! I had a big classic/alt rock phase in middle school, so that’s where all the quote unquote “dad” music comes from, and it still has such a special place in my heart!

This contains Good Omens Season 2 Spoilers
It’s been a week since Good Omens S2 aired. I’m still crying. It’s been nestled in my brain. It HURTS. And today I finally figured out why it’s hurting me and why I’m clinging to the ‘theory’ I’ve developed as a coping mechanism.
First things first: I trust Neil Gaiman implicitly. He is an absolute MASTER storyteller and I know he’ll see us through to the most beautiful ending our demon, angel and the world deserve. Good Omens is the only show/story I have no worries about that I won’t love every second of it.
Anyway. My hurting & crying is Aziraphale’s reaction to Crowley’s kiss. There was no joy, no reciprocity, no softening. He doesn’t lovingly return the kiss like I want. He stands there, at best just a rigid pole, at worst he appears to be fighting it.
And that struck a personal chord. But from Crowley’s POV, and in a long-standing relationship. I live with a rigid pole that I’ve tied my life to. So I’ve just completely shoehorned my obvious trauma in there and taken it on myself. And that hurts and it’s raw and it’s kind of anguish-inducing at times.
So of course, I did what any person with trauma does and developed a coping mechanism: A Theory.
It’s not a new one, I’m not clever. Anyway, here it is:
Aziraphale is quite obviously flustered as when telling Crowley his ‘great news’, with his hands flying everywhere and eyes constantly darting outside. Crowley obviously picks up on this, after all, he told him in episode one that he knows what’s up from his tone of voice. I don’t think this was his “I’m going to pop” tone.
When Crowley kisses him, the miracle sound is heard. He also very subtly nods his head during the kiss and there appears to be an ‘aura’ as well.
I think Crowley stops time (making me ask again, just who WAS he before he fell sauntered vaguely downwards to be that powerful) and they manage to speak out of the Metatron’s view & hearing. (Perhaps even Muriel is involved?)
Whilst out of time, they then swap appearances, just like at the end of S1. …After all, Neil says S2 is a bridge between S1 & 3…
Then they come back into time, (?Aziraphale’s hand relaxes on Crowley’s back?) and we finish with them being on opposite sides to their usual ones, sudden mention of a nightingale after being told there wouldn’t be one and uncharacteristic Bentley music. Oh, and I will never forget that creepy smirk in the lift. Eek.
I’ve got other thoughts about half the street not being normal humans, but this is about my trauma response so I’m going to leave it at this.
Mr Gaiman, you’re a genius. You broke my heart in a personal way due to personal trauma but I love this show, this story, this universe that you and Sir Terry created and the entire huge team has brought to life on the screen, and obviously I adore how Michael Sheen & David Tennant have inhabited these characters and brought them to life.
Thank you 🖤
(Edited the morning after I wrote this for a little more clarity and when the rigid pole was no longer near me…which is not a euphemism…sadly)
