i can't remember if an interaction ever happens like this, (probably) but imagine Kaladin being as stoic as ever, he's on duty (idk if this is during Words of Radiance or just before Rhythm of War, so he's either in the warcamps or Urithiru probably. If warcamps then its after the chasms. actually yknow what this is both fanfic and random bullshit, i do what i want and say fuck canon)

So he's standing guard like he's supposed to, except Shallan decided that a productive use of her time is to go and bother him. Radiant thinks it's rude and the respect she has for both him and any soldier means she hates this, but Veil is totally in on it.

So she's just pestering him for his entire shift, and he's standing there, not looking at her, completely dead-faced, offering the occasional clipped answer, and generally being incredibly annoyed, but at some point, she says something either humorous, heartwarming, or both, and without really thinking about it, just COMPLETELY UNCONSCIOUSLY, his face breaks into a small little grin. Not a sarcastic one or a bitter one, just a little smile of joy that breaks through his perpetual storm. The moment he realizes, of course, he very quickly hides it, but of course Shallan catches it.

And she just gasps playfully but also genuinely surprised, but she keeps it lighthearted in the hopes she sees it again. "Storms, what was that? Captain Kaladin? Was that a smile from the Captain Kaladin, whose scowl could curdle milk?"

And he glares at her, because he wasn't smiling and he was on duty and frankly, she had been annoying him for ages and he wanted her to shove off. But she grins up at him.

"Oh, come on, Captain, don't make all the troops run off in fear now! You have a lovely smile, it's wonderful!"

And she pokes him in the side, just to get a little twitch and a deeper frown.

"Aw, that usually works on my brothers. Well then. I'll have to figure out something else, won't I?" Her mischievous expression softens a little, and she just tells him, "You really do have a lovely smile. I don't know why you try to hide it." And she just sits down and spends the rest of his shift telling jokes and ridiculing passerby, no longer trying to annoy him, but just there to keep him some company and maybe make him smile again.

And if a grin broke through his stormy facade every once in a while, well then, she wouldn't point it out. She just took a Memory and carried on chattering loudly about axehounds and lavis polyps and how Adolin had worn his shirt backwards and that lady's hat over there looked like a pile of cremlings had eaten too much and died on top of it, hoping that smile might stick.

(Later, Shallan finds Adolin and runs up to him, screaming, "I MADE KALADIN SMILE!" and Adolin's like "WHAT IN THE ALMIGHTY'S GOOD NAME, I DIDN'T KNOW HE KNEW HOW TO DO THAT" and they just freak out about it and generally make fun of him. That night, Kaladin has a dream about Tien and wakes up crying, only to wonder what reminded him of the time Tien had visited him in the clinic for hours on end, talking and keeping him company as he tried and failed to get his stitches as perfect as his father's.)

Do you have any Stormlight 5 predictions you think for sure will be in the book? For me I am convinced that Dalinar will lose the duel due to refusing to kill the baby/child that odium makes his champion, also kaladin will become the new radiant ruler

i LOVE that we are all united in the idea that dalinar is gonna get his ass kicked cause there's no way they win that duel!!!!! my theories are still percolating, i kinda want to reassess with the entirety of mistborn era 2 in mind but right now my big end of arc 1 predictions are:

the ten day duel lasts the first half of the book

the oathpact is reformed, someone get braized. probably dalinar if losing the duel doesnt kill him

szeth dies. sorry. i love him but i think this is it.

chana shows up/the chanarach davar theory will be explicitly confirmed or denied. i feel like every herald should be accounted for by this book

visera has always been naturally observant, determined to notice things that others cannot. though she tends to be loud in her happiness, having yelled her way through her childhood to the point where her adult voice is slightly raspy, she can choose be quiet when it counts — keeping to herself in order to be present without being noticed. that said, she often tends to create secrets where they might not actually be — digging too far into something has resulted in her fabricating stories that are almost unbelievable more than once, and though she’s aware of this flaw, she still continues to hunt for bits of knowledge that she likely should not seek. these days, she'd prefer to rely on others to collect the vital information for her — if only to avoid this unfortunate side effect. she still enjoys prying and eavesdropping for sport, however.

studying and lessons were never something that came naturally to visera. despite her distaste for the dusty smell of tomes and the overall dullness of scholarship, she kept her focus by sheer will alone. visera is nothing if she is not bull-headed, and scholars from lys and her father's house could teach her many lessons — those of coin and coffers, of manipulation, and of espionage. visera was privy to them all, and her breadth of knowledge and her political mind matured alongside her. this could do nothing, however; to quiet her hair - trigger temper, nor her tender heart — both traits that transcended her childhood.

now in her late twenties, visera has steeled herself in order to resemble the image of a ruler she has in her mind. the mask that she bears to conceal what she has been told time and again are character flaws has thickened substantially. many who only know her cursorily consider her to be cold in nature, dull, and without much of a personality as a result. she's withdrawn from both valyrian and westerosi high society — preferring to observe from darkened corners as to not draw unnecessary attention to herself. though her siblings are amongst those that she does not hide her true nature from, visera is very well - practiced in concealing her worries from them. she's always done it, managing to attribute the dwindling in the number of her concerns as she aged to the simple act of maturing — though in truth, she's only become a better liar. despite her misgivings, she is kind - hearted, observant, and nearly unfoolable — she spent many days in her youth playing cards for gold, searching the faces of grown men for tells.

I've done this tag before here, listing very early inspirations for the characters, but they have since evolved a lot, so. Here we go, this is more of who they remind me of when I write them now:

Days of Dusk:

Lissan -d'Artagnan (The Three Musketeers) - at least he starts off this way. Young, a bit too confident, forms fast bonds with new friends. - Korra (Legend of Korra) - learning about responsibility and consequences, while also wielding all Elements. - Jed Bartlett (The West Wing) - this is more applicable later on, when Lissan is put in a leadership position. I'm striving to show him as a level-headed force of nature like the President.

Ianim - Rukia Kuchiki (Bleach) - the younger sibling looking up to the older one, living in their shadow, always feeling like they're not good enough. At the same time, lets their hair loose around their friends, relaxes, and enjoys themselves. - Renarin Kholin (The Stormlight Archive) - again, the younger prince, overshadowed by his sibling, but also perceived as physically weaker, more melancholic and quieter.

Gullin - Jadzia Dax (Deep Space 9) - ok, hear me out: flirty✅ smart (and knowledgeable about new developments in science) ✅ will kick your ass ✅ - Gray Fullbuster (Fairy Tail) - snarky, laid back friend who will banter with others, but insanely loyal when things start to heat up. Also, will kick your ass✅

Anthea - Olivier Mira Armstrong (Fullmetal Alchemist) - a fearsome commander with a distinct presence about her. And also, ice-themed. - ...? Look, Anthea started off as a 'chessmaster' archetype. I can't think of any other character in particular that can be considered an 'inspiration'.

Erya - Odoo (Deep Space Nine) - the person in charge of security/peacekeeping force who knows when it's sensible to turn a blind eye. Admittedly, Erya is also willing to break the rules a lot more after duty. - similarly to Anthea, she's more of an archetype - spymaster

Varré - Izumi Curtis (Fullmetal Alchemist) - I'm not saying their teaching methods are cruel, but... Izumi is 'just a passing housewife' who taught Ed and Al a lot about alchemy, and acts as a parental figure for them. This is particularly applicable to Varré's relationship with Gullin - Zahel (The Stormlight Archive) - a swordmaster with a philosopher's streak.

The Truth Teller:

Rilna - Shallan Davar (The Stormlight Archive) - the person who knows what it means to be hurt, so she chooses kindness. Rilna doesn't have quite as dark a past, but nevertheless it applies. - Belle (Beauty and the Beast) - bookworm✅ self-sacrificial✅ possesses strength that isn't physical ✅

Sieran - Joe Blake (The Man in the High Castle) - although no romantic arc is involved, there's a bit of 'a conventionally good looking guy infiltrates a resistance group' going on, though Sieran's motivations are more complicated than Joe's.

Lady Night - Lord Petyr Baelish aka Littlefinger (Game of Thrones) - manipulator✅ uses brothels to obtain information ✅ politicking✅

Finished Elantris! Don't have any pithy comments but I did want to share this: my list of cosmere siblings ranked from best to worst. Incomplete as I haven't read Mistborn Era 2, Warbreaker, or Tress yet, I'll update it when I do.

1. Adolin and Renarin - obviously

2. Kaladin and Tien - also obviously

3. Kiin's children - so originally they were gonna be 4 but then the twist about Adien happened and I realized: 5 years and the two 10 year olds NEVER said shit about their brother being Elantrian. Do you know how big of a fucking narc 10 year Olds are? Those kids must have really loved their brother. A++ 10/10 family

4. Beldre and The Citizen - generally look out for each other as long as one of them isn't possessed by Ruin. Upon reflection even IF one is possessed by Ruin

5. The Davar siblings - they love each other its just...boy their family is dysfunctional

6. Jasnah and Elhokar - more distant but hey, they still like each other

7. Elend and Zane - literally never met and by their own admission do not hate each other so

8. Kelsier and Marsh - put here but I'm literally expecting them to try to kill each other at some point

Brandon Sanderson’s The Stormlight Archive is known for many things. One of them is the relationship between each member of its expansive cast which included many platonic relationships. In this essay, I will explore the friendship between Kaladin Stormblessed and Shallan Davar and the realistic journey that took them to that realization and its relations to the worldbuilding.

While Shallan and Kaladin hailed from very different backgrounds, they both grew up isolated and raised with a similar mindset regarding relations with people of another gender. Kaladin’s parents nudged him to befriend their lord’s daughter, hoping it will end with a marriage which can alleviate their marginalized state. Shallan, on the other hand, was sheltered due to her father’s controlling and abusive nature. She expected to never know a man outside her family other than the husband her father would have chosen for her.

In the second book, Shallan and Kaladin finally interacted after having individual plots in the previous installment. Their first meeting ended with Shallan stealing Kaladin’s boots and they spent their second meeting loudly and creatively insulting each other in public. Even better, they opened up to each other when they were stuck together trying to survive in the chasms, which sparked attraction in them. It made sense why they were drawn to each other.

In Oathbringer, however, it was made clear that they make better friends than lovers. Shallan became passive agressive toward Kaladin once she found out he killed her brother and Kaladin does not really understand Shallan’s mental health problems. There were also instances where Shallan made classist remarks regarding Kaladin. They still make a good team but in the end, they made the choices that are better for them: Shallan choosing to marry Adolin and Kaladin being happily single and seeing Shallan as a sibling figure.

While they only barely spent a chapter together in Rhythm of War, and none of the alters fronting were Shallan, it is clear that they regard each other as good friends and their past attraction does not devalue their friendship. This can be seen (or rather heard) in the passages I have recited for this portfolio. I think their friendship is a very realistic depiction of cross-sex friendships and I am happy that this example involved the oft-seen confusion regarding attraction.

1. Adolin & Renarin

These boys are super close and wholesome 10/10 good job Evi, still unclear how they grew up to be such amazing human beings

2. Lightsong & Llarimar

Great brothers honestly. Llarimar took so much shit from Lightsong and still supported him until the end, they used to go fishing together and Lightsong was close to his niece 8/10

3. Siri & Vivenna

Honestly pretty fine, not super close but Vivenna did try to rescue Siri (kinda) 7/10 let’s ignore the fact that they have 2 other siblings

4. Steris & Marasi

They're fine, not very close but also no major drama 6/10

5. The Davar siblings

Not too bad on their own when you think about it, though their overall family dysfunction makes them feel worse. Way too dependent on Shallan to fix everything, grow up boys 5/10

6. Kelsier & Marsh

Some mess and eehm… insensitivity towards trauma, but they care about each other so that’s a plus 5/10 Kelsier also destroyed the pits of hathsin as revenge so he clearly grieved

7. Bondsmith spren

They are kinda siblings right? We don’t see them interact so it’s hard to judge but they don’t hate each other and one of them is literally called “the sibling” (lot’s of creativity there from honor and cultivation) 5/10

8. Vin & Reen

Honestly kinda forgot Reen existed, very abusive but he did love her in the end and died to protect her? Would be lower if it wasn’t for him being a child himself and prob thought he was doing her a favor by teaching life skills 2/10 still sucked but nothing completely malicious and partially the fault of the government (lord ruler?) failing to make a safe environment. Extra points for circumstance and intention I guess?

9. Gavilar & Dalinar

Stormfather no! Seemed fine in the first book and unraveled from there. On one side we have an almost murder attempt and really unhealthy dedication/outsourcing of morals. On the other we have utilizing your own brother as a weapon while using his trauma/addiction as a way to manipulate him 1/10 great team when it comes to murder but oh so toxic, bring out the worst in each other, should probably be higher but I’m still in fuck Gavilar mode and unlike Vin and Reen here there’s toxicity on both sides here

10. Elend, Zane & others

19 confirmed siblings (definitely more) barely know each other and are ok with trying to murder each other. Elend didn’t even give a fuck when Vin murdered his entire family so that is saying something -2/10 makes me kinda sad for everyone involved, like you have all these children who all deserved better, gotta hope that the surviving 11 + got to live good lives after the catacendre. Fuck now I’m sad for Elends unnamed siblings who are never even in the book, justice for their mothers as well honestly. Amaranta died in woa and was mentioned to have had multiple children while still only being in her twenties, who looks after the little ones?!?

Bonus: Maxillium and Tindwyl

Adorable, I know barely anything about them but they’re five how bad can they be 10/10

visera is the sole living targaryen that can recall a time when the house of the dragon ruled over westeros. six years is enough to grow comfortable, to put roots of memory down in one's childhood. she remembers viserys as he was, laden in the realm's hopes for a reign far gentler than their father's. one night saw the three remaining targaryen children lose their father, their eldest brother and their home within hours of each other. visera remembers little of their journey to essos, the only viable memory one of hot tears tracing lines down her cheeks. she mourned the red keep more than the deceased then, her young mind hardly capable of understanding the impermanence of life. it was the red brick she cried for — the secret passages she'd only been told tale of, never allowed to set foot in them for their narrow corridors being lined with traps.

even as years passed and the potential that she and her siblings would be found in essos lessened, visera's fears bolstered her interest in close combat. from a young age, she became rather adept at dagger wielding, though she knew not of mercy nor her own limits. gore, blood tw an overzealous challenge gone wrong, a dagger slipped from her grip — and visera was left with a long gash on her forearm, blood of old valyria running onto the dusty floor of a lyseni duelling pit. it was a brush with death not nearly close enough to be a genuine worry, but her ten and seven year old pride was mortally wounded. since then, visera has rarely entertained duels — and since she turned twenty and five, has ceased duelling altogether (though if she were challenged, i doubt she could resist lol). in the moons leading up to their return to westeros, she took up the hobby once more — but is not nearly as skilled as she once was.

as she grew older, visera's fears shifted from that of westerosi traitors come to extinguish the remains of house targaryen to the prospect of ruling itself. returning to westeros, though a far off potential for many years, had seemingly always been on the cards. by now, she was one with essos — it was her home, a thought that conflicted with the entitlement she felt towards the red keep and westeros itself. thoughts of what was taken from her and her siblings plagued her day and night, but they mingled with fears of the unknown. it was fated — house targaryen would return, and she would sit the iron throne. she would rule better than her father had following his descent into madness. she would do so in the image of viserys, whom she would attempt to emulate once she'd exited her adolescence. but visera was not viserys, and never would be — despite similarities in moniker.

studying and lessons were never something that came naturally to visera. despite her distaste for the dusty smell of tomes and the overall dullness of scholarship, she kept her focus by sheer will alone. visera is nothing if she is not bull-headed, and lys could teach her many lessons — those of coin and coffers, of manipulation, and of espionage. visera was privy to them all, and her breadth of knowledge and her political mind matured alongside her. this could do nothing, however; to quiet her hair - trigger temper, nor her tender heart — both traits that transcended her childhood.

now in her thirties, visera has steeled herself in order to resemble the image of a ruler she has in her mind. the mask that she bears to conceal what she has been told time and again are character flaws has thickened substantially. many who only know her cursorily consider her to be cold in nature, dull, and without much of a personality as a result. she's withdrawn in westerosi society — preferring to observe from darkened corners as to not draw unnecessary attention to herself. though her siblings are amongst those that she does not hide her true nature from, visera is very well - practiced in concealing her worries from them. she's always done it, managing to attribute the dwindling in the number of her concerns as she aged to the simple act of maturing — though in truth, she's only become a better liar. despite her misgivings, she is kind - hearted, observant, and nearly unfoolable — she spent many days in her youth playing cards for gold, searching the faces of grown men for tells.

⋆ 𝐖𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐃 𝐏𝐋𝐎𝐓𝐒 .

a companion: someone that she trusts wholeheartedly, who she can be herself completely with. should probably be a member of one of the houses the targaryens are allied with, but can also be someone who hails from essos or one of the free cities!

a potential betrothal: though visera is not currently interested in the prospect of marriage whatsoever — a political alliance would strengthen her house's campaign for the iron throne, and thus she will do it for the right price, per se.

someone she's suspicious of: as noted above, visera has always been one to make a mountain out of a molehill. she's learned her lesson surrounding bringing her falsified concerns to her sibligns and allies, but this person is someone she thinks gives weird vibes — and she mostly keeps those thoughts to herself.

literally anything else! flings (though she's not particularly romance driven, she does have the unfortunate tendency to fall in love with all of her friends), antagonistic connections (she's very stubborn it wouldn't be hard), someone she's learning a skill from, etc. i'm open to pretty much any kind of connection :)
