Salvatore Mercatante : Il Lamento della Strega
Salvatore Mercatante : Il Lamento della Strega
Sure, October has passed us by and we are steadily approaching our day of thanks and turkey. But this doesn’t mean that all things spooky are gone and left us till next fall. In fact, there is a portion of the population(and many readers of these hallowed digital pages) that Fall and Halloween live within us long after the last of the leaves have been raked and incinerated in a backyard fireball.…

Annotated Bibliography of Sources
Saadé, Raafat George, and Camille Alexandre Otrakji. "First Impressions Last a Lifetime: Effect of Interface Type on Disorientation and Cognitive Load." Computers in Human Behavior 23.1 (2007): 525-35. Oregon State University Libraries. Web. 11 May 2017.
This article reviews how a people’s first impressions of an interface affect how they respond and utilize it. It reviews different interfaces and evaluates their cognitive load and through that examines how people respond to them. This article will be good for my paper not only because of the shift of graphic design and book covers to the digital realm, but also because it takes a technical stance on first impressions and talks about how they affect usability, attraction, and attention, which are all important aspects of Graphic Design.
Bhargave, Rajesh, and Nicole Votolato Montgomery. "The Social Context of Temporal Sequences: Why First Impressions Shape Shared Experiences." Journal of Consumer Research 40.3 (2013): 501-17. Web.
This article evaluates the importance and science of first impressions in a group/social context. It goes beyond the experience of just one person and effectively explores how our experience of non analytical stimulus (aesthetic experiences) changes and affects our first impressions based on a group setting. With the growth of social media and social pressure, this article will help me understand the growing importance of group first impressions, which I can give context in book cover design and graphic design, as well as for people themselves in self branding.
Rule, Nicholas O., Joseph M. Moran, Jonathan B. Freeman, Susan Whitfield-Gabrieli, John D.e. Gabrieli, and Nalini Ambady. "Face Value: Amygdala Response Reflects the Validity of First Impressions." NeuroImage 54.1 (2011): 734-41. Web.
This study evaluated the response of people to the faces of CEO’s and compared that to their levels of success and measurable wealth, alongside the reactions of people guessing their leadership ability. It was shown that people reacted in ways that were measurable in the success of the CEO, so the most positive responses were for the most successful CEO’s. This article is applicable to my topic through the fact that I am researching first impressions in Graphic Design (with a focus on book cover design) and self branding. How these CEO’s looked and gave first impressions was correlated with their wealth and success. This article can help me evaluate how self branding and build success.
Mann, Thomas C., and Melissa J. Ferguson. "Reversing Implicit First Impressions through Reinterpretation after a Two-day Delay ☆." Reversing Implicit First Impressions through Reinterpretation after a Two-day Delay. Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, n.d. Web. 11 May 2017.
One thing that must be accepted about first impressions is that they aren’t always good. This article evaluates a person’s ability to update aspects of a first impression, if that is possible, and to what extent. This is applicable to my topic because it shows what really is a part of a first impression, what can be changed or salvaged and how, and if there is hope after a bad first impression. http://www.sciencedirect.com.ezproxy.proxy.library.oregonstate.edu/science/article/pii/S0022103116301408
Thomson, E. M. "Aesthetic Issues in Book Cover Design 1880-1910." Journal of Design History 23.3 (2010): 229-45. Web.
This article is a historical evaluation of aesthetic choices for book cover design in history. This historical context of book cover design is a good reference point from which to address the transformation of what book cover design has become, how it has progressed, and if the kinds of first impressions they worried about is still relevant today.
Foster, Daniel R. "Creating That First Impression." Home Office Computing 12.3 (n.d.): 1994. Web. <http://bi.galegroup.com.ezproxy.proxy.library.oregonstate.edu/global/article/GALE%7CA15040433/835a752efecfb1c2f81f9aa34a2c7ef1?u=s8405248>.
This article talks about the personal experience of a designer working from home and how her home environment affects the first impressions of her credibility as a designer. This article is relevant because it is a face on example of self branding and representation and how your home can speak for you as a businessperson and as a human being.
