Bob McDaniel's only cousin, childhood best friend, and a Hayesville outsider. Every summer break would be spent together indoors until the both of them grew older, eventually meeting Aaron and Chris. Trouble was quick to find them when they met Liv Hawthorne shortly after, coming in the form of eight malevolent monsters known to haunt Hayesville. Dan's apprehension on staying in Hayesville is no match for the love he has for his family and how much he worries for their safety, so much that he actively comes around much more to check in on them now that he's an adult. He and Bobby have discussed many ways on how to get their family to move away to a different state but have been unsuccessful thus far. He doesn't care much for Bob's friends and girlfriend but keeps his opinions to himself.

Thinking a lot about two War of 1812 primary sources from Fort Meigs. One is the diary of Captain Daniel Cushing, who died in 1815 attempting to ford a river, and his diary was discovered only in the 20th century. After transcription the original was lost, and we know that Cushing's very Georgian spelling and punctuation was "corrected" by the 20th century transcriber. (It's quite a contrast from the few surviving letters from Cushing which preserve his original style).
Alfred M. Lorrain of the Petersburg Volunteers wrote his own memoir, but it was published in the 1860s at the end of his life. So both Cushing's and Lorrain's narratives have questionable elements of editorial meddling and the vagaries of memory—but they perfectly agree on a striking story about the Petersburg Volunteers being to forced to sleep without tents or supplies on a snowy night on the march to Fort Meigs.
Cushing's diary, dated 24th January 1813:
The Virginia volunteers and the Pennsylvania militia were ordered to encamp out of the lines about forty rods up the Creek, nothing to shelter them but the heavens and some scattering trees. They have neither tents nor camping equipage of any sort, it being all left behind with the ordinance and the traveling becoming so very bad it could not possibly come on. My company was ordered on the right of the whole army but in no better fix than the above troop, but they were invited into tents with the troops that lay there. Myself and lieutenants were very politely invited by Major Harden and Doctor Logan, to take part of their fare as lodging and victualing. This night it began to snow.
One of those Virginia volunteers without shelter was Lorrain, who later wrote:
At a late hour we approached an arena which bore a strong resemblance to terra firma; and scraping away the snow, we spread our blankets under the naked canopy of heaven; for at the time of our departure from Sandusky we had left our tents standing, with all our camp equipage. How long we lay that night in a shivering condition before we fell asleep we could never ascertain; but I awoke in the morning from pleasant dreams and in a profuse perspiration, and, as I thought, under a heavy press of blankets; but when I threw up my arm to take an observation, and to see how the land lay, an avalanche of virgin snow, which had silently ministered to my comfort during the night, tumbled into my bosom, and quickly roused me to a recollection of my proper latitude and true bearings, and I found, by calculation, that I was bounded north, south, east, and west, by the Black Swamp.

Smiffina Episodes: Lifesaver [Set 2 canon weeks after the last episode of Gun Runner]
Sally and Ben are first on scene at a hit and run with Roger, Tony and Callum as back up. Witnesses say the car was a red Alpha Romeo driven by a dark haired smart young guy. They also have a partial index which Smithy tries to find on CCTV. Gina spots it and they get the full index. It's registered to Ryan Davidson who leases it via his employer. Only Ryan was made redundant a week ago and should have returned the car. They find CCTV proving it's the car but it doesn't show him behind the wheel of it.
Ryan claims to be getting dressed for work when they arrive and that he'd had a late night to celebrate landing a big deal at work. Tony finds a hipflask in his suit jacket. Ryan admits he owns the car and Tony tells him he matches the description of the driver though Ryan claims he left it at work the night before so it must have been stolen. He initially refuses a breath test until Callum says it's procedure to test the owner to do one after an accident, especially given he matches the description of the driver. Tony points out they should report the car being stolen too whilst they're at it so it can be dusted for prints when found. Callum tells them they know he's lying about having to go work and his breath test reading is positive.
Tumblr media
Ryan insists his car was stolen and this is all one big waste of time. Gina tells him to calm down because his attitude isn't helping anyone, especially him. He tells Gina he's sober as a judge and it's a big fuss over nothing. Gina doesn't call a hit and run where the victim is lucky to be alive nothing. She tells Smithy to take a second breath test from him and "then we can all see how sober you really are."
Callum's not in the greatest of moods after that morning but it worsens when Heaton asks for the risk assessments of Emma's death from him and Gina. Both tell him the paperwork is on their desk and they'll get it to him by the end of the day. He tells them that they have to account for every decision they made so it's best to do it whilst it's still reasonably fresh in their minds (never mind the fact she almost lost Smithy a fortnight ago (and that he'd been in serious danger for a monthish before that!) and that this episode is 1 week shy of it being 3 months since Emma's death! Poor Gina!) Callum goes to check on the case, telling Roger that the second breath test was under the llimit. If Kim can't ID the driver they have nothing.
Tumblr media
The victim, Caitlin, has potentially serious head injuries and Ben has identified a problem. The 'mother', Kim said Caitlin had no allergies but luckily before giving her any medication the medics found an alert bracelet telling them she's allergic to penicillin. It could have been very dangerous! She's also calling Caitlin by the wrong surname. Sally goes through her phone and finds a picture of Caitlin and a different woman entitled 'me and mum'. Kim does a runner after realising that they're on to her. Ben catches her and brings her in.
Ben tells Sally and Gina the situation is further complicated the results of Kim's PNC check. She's been missing for 6 months after her son died in a boating accident. She could be the main witness to the accident and the only one who can identify the driver so it's imperative they find out who she is.
Sally reassures Kim she's not under arrest but asks why she said she was Caitlin's mum. She says she never told anyone she was, that they presumed and she didn't correct them. She said that she heard the girl use her mobile and learnt her name that way. Ben gently tells her that they know she's a missing person and just so they're 100% sure they have the right person, can she confirm her husband's name? She does and that her son was called James but known as Jamie. Sally suggests she saw a girl who needed her mum and stepped up. She says she's lived on cash in hand cleaning jobs and her savings. They have to tell her husband she has been found but they don't have to tell him where she is and she doesn't have to see him. Kim insists she can't see him and they reassure her but admit they do need to ID the driver of the car and she is their best shot as she saw him.
Callum reassures Sally that Kim won't be charged with anything as she's been through enough and wasn't behaving maliciously. There's been no answer on the number for Caitlin's parents however so they're going to visit the house. At the house they find a young man stocking up for a party. He tells them that he's Caitlin's boyfriend and that her parents are away for 24 hours whilst they have a birthday party for her 18th. He sends them to Caitlin's gran for the address whilst he goes to the hospital. At Caitlin's grans house they find the her at the foot of the stairs with a bruised cheek, holding her shoulder. She tells Callum that she fell downstairs but her front room has been ransacked. Callum sends Ben to do a door to door.
Kim recognises Ryan as the driver of the car via WADS and Smithy and Tony interview him. He claims he has a lot on his mind, his life is falling apart and he didn't do it on purpose. He wanted to get home but he couldn't avoid her stepping out to run away from the older woman after they'd been arguing. He claims he panicked and sped home. Tony tells Sally that he's claiming Caitlin ran out after arguing with Kim. Sally says it's rubbish and they'd only met that morning. Tony goes to get the CCTV from the cafe to check. Just after Ben tells Sally what they found at Caitlin's gran's house and that a neighbour reported seeing a woman driving a blue car and matching Kim's description visiting and it looks like she assaulted the woman.
Sally and Ben find her soon after and have to arrest her. Tony shows Gina the CCTV that shows Caitlin and Kim arguing and Caitlin running away. Sally runs Kim's fingerprints and finds an old record for arson under the surname Wickham - the same surname as Caitlin's grandma.
Kim's husband Dave insists he wants to know where she is. He's heartbroken at losing Kim as well as his son and that 2 weeks ago it was the year anniversary. He'd been in the water for 10 minutes before they realised he was missing. Gina tells him she can't let him see her without Kim's permission but she'll pass on the message that he understands and would have escaped the pain too if he could. He admits that she'd cut her past out and wouldn't talk about her family or old friends and would say the past doesn't matter only the present.
Sally and Ben are very gentle with Kim as they try to interview her but she is distressed and sobs throughout, not answering questions. Ben tells her they have fingerprints from the house and that if they match she'll be charged. Her solicitor suspends the interview and Gina wants the FME to check her over because she fears for a nervous breakdown. Tony reports Kim spent time in a young offenders institute for arson and that she was 6 months pregnant at the time of arrival and gave birth to a girl. "Don't tell me, exactly 18 years ago." "To the day, ma'am." "Kim's her bloomin' mother isn't she!" Gina sighs and sends them back to the hospital to talk to Caitlin about Kim.
Caitlin says she didn't know her but she let her sit with her in the cafe. She was nice but then started to ask weird questions about her family. She left and the woman grabbed her arm and said 'happy birthday' to her. She continued leaving the cafe and she wouldn't leave her alone. She was about to cross the road when she heard the woman say 'i never stopped loving you'. She turned to face her and she said 'I'm your mum'. Caitlin ran away and woke up in hospital. Caitlin asks them who the woman is, they tell her to wait for her mum to arrive... she works out that the woman is telling the truth.
Gina has made a family tree to explain to the officers what is going on. Lorna - Caitlin's gran - has two daughters. One is Kim. Her eldest is Trisha who brought Caitlin up as her own and they'd kept it secret in the family. Kim's file says that she surrendered the baby to her mother's care until she was released but there's nothing about what happened after release. Callum speaks to Lorna and explains that he knows it's complicated but they do now know who it was who was in the house and that Kim was present when Caitlin had her accident and from that and the hit and run investigation she has worked out the truth. Lorna apologises and says she wished she'd told them at the time. Trisha is with her and tells her mother that they should have told Caitlin before now about her real mother. Lorna explains that Kim was a difficult child and constantly had police at the door. There'd been no contact since she handed her over until that day. Lorna did fall down the stairs but Kim didn't help her, she went through drawers to find Trisha's address to see her daughter. Trisha wants her charged and Lorna agrees as Trisha claims Kim's not safe to be around Caitlin. Sally takes Trisha to see Caitlin but she has left the hospital and been gone about an hour. She wasn't discharged and the hospital want her back. Trisha growls that she's her daughter and that they should never have told her about Kim.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tony and Ben find Caitlin's boyfriend with a bag . She doesn't want to be found or to see the police or her family. Ben tells him how important it is that she returns to the hospital to be monitored. He tells them that she's heading to Liverpool once she gets her things and he's waiting for a call to know where to take her bag. He agrees to let them take him to her and Tony gently encourages her back.
Gina watches as Kim is bailed. Sally is not happy, she tells Gina that Kim needs more help as she's not safe to be on her own. Gina tells her the FME has seen her and said she can be bailed and reminds her there's a limit to what they can do. They're not medics, psych's or social workers and can only uphold the law. The FME has referred her to her GP for ongoing care. Sally wants her to be with people who care about her. Gina points out she left the man that Sally wants to reunite her with 6 months ago, it could be for more reasons than the sons death and that Kim has refused to see him. She orders her out her office and looks down, only for Emma's death paperwork to be staring back at her.
Tumblr media
Ben and Sally rush to the scene when Kim's car is reported at Jamaica Wharf with a distressed female inside. Gina takes Callum with her and follows them to the scene. Gina tells Sally not to approach and to wait for backup but she ignores her and approaches Kim and begs her to talk to her. Sally says she wants to help her but Kim shakes her head and tells her she keeps messing up and she wants it to stop hurting. She lost both her children and she can't get over it. Sally promises her that they need time but they can get over it. She tells Sally that she's so tired and she'll stop it now. Sally thinks she's calmed down and goes to get in the car but Kim drives off into the water.
Ben goes for a lifebelt, Callum calls for help from the RNLI and Marine Support Unit. Sally starts undressing. Gina tells her not to and that if she disobeys her she can kiss goodbye to her job. Sally throws her warrant card at her and tells her she's quit before jumping in the water. Callum starts to undress too as Gina begs him not to but he replies "I can't just stand here, can I?!" and jumps in. Sally and Callum fight to try and break the window to get Kim out He manages to get in but Kim is too scared and unable to undo her seatbelt. Gina shouts at them to get out as the car starts going under the water. Callum pulls Sally back as the car slips fully under. They look at each other, take a deep breath and dive under leaving a terrified Gina on the dock watching. Ben runs back with the life belt and starts to undress too but Gina physically stops him and drags him against her so he can't, smacking his arms in her upset before hugging him and almost crying. Thankfully Callum and Sally finally surface straight after with Kim. Ben throws them the lifebelt and helps haul them to the dock.

😥😥😥😥😥
"That was a close one, eh Ma'am?" "You are both lucky to be alive! That was STUPID AND DANGEROUS!" She shouts back and walks away, telling them she's going for the ambulances when really she's going to hide her tears from them. It appears this might be where Gina has finally realised that she can't handle the job in the same way she used to and that it's been heading this way for a good year.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gina tells her to meet them in her office once they've gotten changed. Sally tells Callum that she was the only one who could help her and she couldn't let her go. She makes out she assessed the risk and wouldn't have done it if she didn't think she could. Callum tells her the risk assessing is bollocks, he knows she just jumped in and to hell with it. He tells her she was brave and that it was the right thing to do whatever Gina says. Ben chuckles and hugs her and calls her a nutter, walking her back to the cars.
Sally tells Kim that her mum has dropped the assault charge. She never knew about Jamie and Kim tells Sally she just wanted to see her daughter and do the right thing for once. She tells her she'll call Dave, her husband, and work with the doctors for her mental health.
Gina orders Sally and Callum into her office and tells them their behaviour was an outrageous breach of health and safety rules, dangerous, reckless and grossly insubordinate. Heaton tells them they got lucky this time but it could have gone the other way and they could be speaking to their next of kin, having a whip round and writing the eulogies. He gives Sally her warrant card back and tells her to go to the pub because there are people there waiting to buy her a drink. He then tells Callum 'well done'. Callum apologises to Gina for disobeying a direct order. "That won't happen again." "Not long ago I'd have been in there with you or shouting encouragement from the sidelines. Do you know what it's all about?" she asks, opening the folder on her desk to reveal a picture of Emma and the report Heaton had asked for. "I just couldn't face filling in another one of these." She thanks him and he leaves, shutting the door behind him to reveal Gina almost in tears the other side.

'Hamlet,' Kenny Leon's Dynamite Version, Free Shakespeare in the Park
Ato Blankson-Wood in Hamlet (Joan Marcus) There are more iterations of Hamlet presented globally in the last fifty years than are “dreamt of in your philosophy.” To that point director Kenny Leon’s version of Hamlet, currently at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park until August 6th, provides an intriguing update of the son for whom time is so “out of joint,” he is unable to seamlessly and…

Double bill: American Rust (created by Dan Futterman, 2021), Your Honor (created by Peter Moffat, 2021)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've been Maura Tierney's biggest fan since I saw her first episode in ER on Polish TV. This might have been the beginning of me getting into watching TV series, which would become a way of escaping the pain of writing my M.A. dissertation on a topic I would later find out that I didn't care much about. ER would soon fill in the gap between the ends of Sex and the City and Six Feet Under and the beginning of Weeds, probably the last single-series experience I would have before I started watching multiple series simultaneously. She showed up as Nurse Hathaway's obstetrician to then join the series' core staff a few weeks later. She was amazing, her face registered every tiny emotion, she didn't give a fuck, yet she cared so so much. I later discovered Newsradio, where she was the stabilizer to everyone else's zaniness. Each of the above titles would eventually bring me disappointment: Newsradio lost Paul Hartman, Weeds got lost in its constant transitions, Six Feet Under would get mean and implausible, while Sex and the City was like those people in your life that suddenly you understand that had toxic throughout but you just failed to notice. Out of these, ER is the most fascinating case of a show that weathered through its most spectacular loss of Edwards' Dr. Green into the unexpectedly well-written season 9 to then, equally unexpectedly, dramatically drop in quality especially in the last three seasons. Tierney was great throughout, particularly in her last full season, where her character suddenly, but credibly started drinking again. Tierney then had a fantastic guest stint at Rescue Me, returning to the show for a moment two years later, just after recovering from cancer: due to that, I think, her character, already a broader, funnier, and more sexual version of Abby Lockhart, would be given a raw cancer storyline, which, for me, became one of her three best performances. The second would be a variation of it, a blunt prosecutor on Your Honor, a show that was not so great and super popular, yet it had three great supporting roles (Tierney, Landecker, Toussaint). My third would be her winning supporting-to-lead performance in The Affair, a show as consistently flawed as it was entertaining to watch. American Rust is more frustrating. It is bleak and tries so hard to emulate the poverty of its characters that it comes off as gratuitous. Both shows have recently been renewed for second seasons, both were in a limbo for a while, which shows how unimpressive they turned out. I am looking forward to Tierney being offered funnier and punchier productions, her own Veep or Mare of Easttown or Hacks, something funny, potent, and smart as she always makes her characters.

66th Annual Grammy Awards | Los Angeles, CA | February 4, 2024
Schiaparelli gown
In my eyes, a Schiaparelli look should be an uncontested slam dunk. So for this look to, in my opinion, not fly quite as high as befits the beautiful work of Daniel Roseberry is almost a greater disappointment than an average look on its own. To opt for a designer that is known for its surrealism and its beautifully eerie ethereal strangeness but to tamp it down to what I mistook as a Vivienne Westwood gown and strip it of any possible Schiaparelli beautiful weirdness feels like a huge missed opportunity. Especially when it could have really been magical and interesting and a fashion risk for Taylor.
But I also understand that she had a vision. And she molded the designer to fit her and that vision.
It’s a look that I feel falls on an Easter Egg’s sharpened sword. The draping akin to tangled bedsheets, the Victorian cameo-esque appearance of the watch choker from afar, the dramatic opera gloves, the corset back, and the black and white colour scheme feel pulled from (or inspired by) what we now know is the forthcoming album formerly known as ‘TS11’: Tortured Poets Department. And if Taylor’s admission that this project has been in the works for the last two years is anything to go by, it also throws into sharp relief the schoolgirl plaids, the dark academia loafers, and the shadowy colour palette her street style has often centered on in recent months.
There are so many beautiful elements to pull apart here that feel sacrificial in the name of early evocation of what could be a scholarly-sounding (or perhaps sapient-sounding) album based on the cover and intro language. The gown has a beautiful shape (the waist cinching!) and is a fascinating colour choice that could read suffragette or bride depending on who’s asked (and isn’t that in itself an intentional diametric “Lavender Haze” worth dissecting?). But the black accessories (presumably in service of Tortured Poets) overcooks it. I think a low bun, single strand of diamonds, and closed toe pumps could have gone a long way in styling (I’ll let the trendy gloves stay - in combination with the white gown they’re giving Princess Kate at the BAFTAs, no?).
The biggest point of all is that Taylor understands the connect between her music and her style (I should know - I spend 350+ pages talking about it in my upcoming book Taylor Swift Style: Fashion Through the Eras). She also understands the role her style plays in cementing moments in her career to milestones. This moment. This gown. It joins a trio of looks as her most memorable and significant: her AOTY wins. This look will forever be enshrined in slideshows depicting the new precedent she has set for any artist - male or female. And what a win it is for an album I love so much. Knowing that, it feels even more fascinating to me that she’d use this moment as a bridge to another project and not honouring the album in question.

She Don’t Wanna Marry Me
Tumblr media
Part 4
16 Years Old
“Hey Y/N!” A familiar blonde ran up to you.
“Oh hey Jessie what’s up?” You crossed your arms as you spoke to the girl.
Lorraine quietly stood next to you as your walk home was interrupted.
“Nothin much.” The girl
Giggled twirling her hair. “I just wanted to know if you’d want to go to the Sadie Hawkins dance with me?”
Lorraine’s jaw clenched as she watched your face. She couldn’t tell if you were interested by the way you kept your expression smooth.
“I appreciate the offer Jessie but someone already asked me.”
Both girls eyes widened surprised before Jessie smirked her shy demeanor gone.
“Well I can promise you an extra good time if you go with me.” Her hand went to graze your arm with its fingernails making Lorraine scoff. You glance at the girl offering Jessie a short nod before you led the small brunette on the path home.
Once she was out of ear shot Lorraine let loose.
“Skank.” You barked out a laugh making the girl glare at you.
You raise your hands up in surrender.
“Hey what did I do? I completely agree with you.” Lorraine’s eyebrows furrowed.
You chuckle softly shaking your head.
“You really think I’ll let jezebel take me to the dance?” Lorraine shrugged her feet kicking a small rock as she refused to meet your eyes.
“Well if not her then what about the other girl that asked you?”
You shook your head.
“I turned her down told her I was planning on asking someone else.”
Shiny brown eyes met yours.
“Who?” She asked voice soft and curious as she bit her lip.
“I-“
“LORRAINE!” You let out a heavy sigh as Douchebag Danny came running up to the two of you.
The girl beside you shifted her attention to the boy running towards you. The moment gone the minute he’d stood in front of her.
“Hey..” he huffed trying to catch his breath. Hands on his knees as he bent over feeling as if his lungs were gonna collapse. “Hey.”
Lorraine giggled brushing a piece of her hair back. You felt your jaw clench knowing the tell tale sign of Lorraine crushing on someone.
“Hey Daniel, are you ok?”
The boy scoffed standing up straight still breathing heavily.
“Psshhh yeah I’m fine, better than fine actually I’m great.”
You rolled your eyes as you felt yourself almost puke.
“I heard a rumor that you were gonna ask me to the dance coming up.” Your eyes shot to the girl in question as she blushed, more nervous giggles and hair twirling as she looked up at the boy doe eyed.
“Maybe.” Pearly white teeth grinned at her.
“Well maybe I would say yes.” The girl squared her shoulders and stood taller.
“Will you go to the dance with me?”
“I’d love to go with you.”
You walk ahead giving the two space as they continued to talk. Douchebag following you as he offered to walk her home.
“So I’ll see you tomorrow?” You didn’t look but knew Lorraine was already telling the boy yes.
You walked into the kitchen rubbing daddy’s shoulder as he read a newspaper and gave mama a kiss on the cheek.
“Hey baby how was school?” You shrug grabbing an apple.
“It was ok I’m not that hungry right now is it ok if I just go lay down?” The two looked to you concerned but were quickly interrupted by a squealing Lorraine.
“I got a date to Sadie Hawkins.” Her mom laughed clapping a bit before kissing her daughters cheeks.
“That’s great baby. We’ll go dress shopping this weekend ok?” The girl nodded enthusiastic as her father grunted.
“And what little punk thinks he’s good enough for my Rainey?” The girl almost rolled her eyes at her fathers protective nature. You remained quiet as your grip on the apple tightened and the slight flexing of your jaw increase. Slowly making your way to your room as you wanted to avoid any further talk of the dance.
“Daniel Smith down the street.”
He huffed. “Isn’t he a little old for you?”
“He’s 17 daddy.”
“Oh stop it.” She hit her husband. “He’s a sweet boy his mother and I are in the same book club and he always lends a hand when she needs it.”
“Yeah all boys are sweet at first then they go looking for one thing and the minute they get it-“
“Stop while you’re ahead.” Mrs. Day’s tone was calm but the threat behind her words gave little sense of peace.
His shoulders sagged before he sat up straight again turning to his daughter.
“I want to meet him before you leave and he better have you home by 11.” The girl clapped hugging her father before helping her mother set the table. She noticed only three plates being taken out.
“Is someone not eating?”
“Y/n said she wasn’t too hungry. I’ll leave her a plate in the microwave.” As the trio ate her father broke the silence.
“So did anyone ask her to the dance?”
Lorraine scoffed. “Yeah, the town tramp.”
Her father choked mid bite a hearty laugh following.
“Damn it Raine.”
“Lorraine.” Her mother scolded making the girl shrug at the mixed reactions.
“It’s true. She did say someone else asked but it wasn’t who she wanted to take.”
“Did she ever say who it was?” Lorraine shrugged.
“No idea.”
The next day you were more quiet than usual and as you went to leave, Mrs.Day stopped you.
“Aren’t you gonna wait for Lorraine?”
You shook your head.
“Douc-Daniels gonna get her.”
She nodded. “Would you want me to take you?”
You shook your head already one foot out the door. “I like the walk.”
As you were leaving you almost slammed into the idiot with nice hair.
“Oh hey Y/n is Lori ready?”
You felt your eyebrows scrunch together. Lori?
You shook your head rushing past him.
“Don’t know but I gotta get going.”
This was last week, the dance was in a few days and all but one Day noticed your strange behavior. You were listening to music when Mrs.Day knocked on your door.
“Hey sweetie.” You put your phone down slowly taking off your headphones confused.
“Everything ok?” Mama laughed sitting next to you on your mattress.
“I should be asking you that darlin you’ve been quiet and we haven’t seen much of you.” You shrug.
“Just been busy.” The woman smirked.
“Avoiding Lorraine?” You flush slightly rubbing your neck.
“I’m guessing she was who you wanted to ask to the dance.” You stare slightly embarrassed as you nod.
She gently placed a hand on your cheek brushing some hair back from your face.
“I’m sorry baby.” You shrug again. “But I think you shouldn’t mope around.”
“You’re not mad at me for liking Lorraine?”
The older woman laughed.
“Baby if I got mad at you for that I would’ve hated you since we met.”
You stay silent. “How about we go get you something nice for the dance?”
You shook your head. “I think I’ll pass.”
She nodded as she stood going to her bathroom brushing her teeth as she got ready for bed.
Her husband resting his chin on her shoulder.
“Y/n just realized she likes Raine.” Mr.Day laughed.
“That poor kids been in love with her since they met, we just gotta wait to see if Rainey will catch up.” Her eyebrows shot up.
“You knew?!” He laughed nodding.
“I may not be the sharpest tool
in the kit but I know love struck when I see it.”
“I give it 2 years before they get together.” Her husband grinned.
“I think it’ll take longer than that I give it 5.”
22 Years Old
Mr.Day was quiet as he brushed his teeth, his wife next to him rubbing lotion into her skin.
“Guess we both lost that bet huh?”
Mr.Day chuckled. “I got until the end of this year but yes it’s looking like we were wrong.”
Mrs.Day sighed.
“Is it our fault?”
“Of course not! We can’t dictate her life. It’s better to wait for the right thing then to race for the wrong thing.” She shook her head.
“She’s getting married.”
“She’s engaged, she ain’t married there’s still time for her to figure out what her heart wants.”
“And what if it’s Rj?” At this Mr.Day scoffed.
“Yeah and what if pigs fly?” The back of her hand slapped his shoulder.
“Im serious.”
“And I am too darlin’. Look Raine may take some time but I think a part of her knows RJ ain’t right for her. Im hoping a part of her also knows that while she may not love Y/n she deserves someone who would love her like Y/N would.”
They stayed quiet until Mr.Day broke the silence again laughing.
“You remember Daniel?” His wife finally cracked a smile.
“Such a sweet boy.” Mr.Day laughed.
At the dance she had only talked about you and how she wished you were there with her. Daniel had tried to steer her concentration to them but ended up taking her home early. Their “first kiss” decent but no fireworks. The dates were nice but she’d find herself wishing she were hanging out with you instead. They had tried, going bowling, grabbing pizza, even small walks in the park. This went on for months before Lorraine had decided to end it. She didn’t feel the connection she yearned for.
Lorraine had come in crying she hadn’t stopped to talk to her parents she just ran up to your room pouncing on you the moment she went through the door. Her arms slung around your neck as hot tears met your skin. She was so upset she couldn’t speak. You consoled her and let her take your bed before you snuck out knocking on the boys door and punching him with no explanation.
“I was the one who taught her to punch.” Mr. Day grinned proudly as his wife hit him once again.
Back at your apartment, you had just finished washing up when you heard a sharp knock at your door. You went to open the door and found Lorraine on the other side.
“Raine?”
“So an apartment above the shop is better than our home?”
“What? No I-“
“Did you leave because you didn’t want them to catch you sneaking in girls?”
“What?! Raine-“ the girl stumbled into you. Big baby browns locking onto yours as soft hands stroked your face.
“Or is it because you hate me?” You watched as a light shimmer of tears lined her eyelids.
You grabbed her chin firmly making her breath hitch.
“Now that’s a damn lie Lorraine I could never hate you.” You sniffed and almost gagged at the familiar scent.
“Are you drunk?” Her body sagged against you her head hitting your shoulder as she nodded.
“And you drove here?!” She shook her head.
“I had Bobby drop me off.”
You sighed, picking the girl up bridal style.
She laughed arms going around your neck as she did so.
“You’re my best friend.” You laid her gently in your bed as you went to grab some extra blankets.
“I know.”
“I miss you.”
“I know.”
“I love you.” You stop, looking at her cheesy grin knowing she doesn’t mean it the way you want her to.
It’s only when her soft snoring hits your ears that you realize she’s fallen asleep.
“I love you so much more.” You place a soft kiss on her forehead as you go to sleep in the couch.
Once you throw yourself down you raise one arm behind your head, eyes staring at nothing as you wonder what you’ll do when she marries him.
