TVD Rambling Rewatch 1x14

Anna and Pearl stumble through the door of the motel and turn on the light. Damon is waiting for them, in the chair in the corner in the dark.

Damon: You knew Katherine wasn’t in there.

Anna, looking guilty: You wouldn’t have helped me.

Damon vamps over to grab Pearl by the neck. She struggles to break free. Anna screams and tries to pull him off but they’re too similar in terms of strength and Damon is feeling desperate.

Damon: Why do you get a happy ending?!

Anna: No! Damon, please! You wouldn’t have helped me! You know you wouldn’t!

Damon: Why do you get it and I don’t?!

Pearl, trying to speak around his grip: The guard, the one at the church, the one who locked us in! She promised to turn him! He was obsessed with her! She had him...under her spell...like everybody else! He let her go!

Damon releases his grip on Pearl’s neck, trying to process what she said.

Anna: Last I saw her, was Chicago. 1983. She knew where you were, Damon. She didn’t care.

Damon’s mouth works, unable to form the words, and unwilling to cry right here and right now as Anna twists the knife deeper. Damon backs away as Anna whispers “sorry” and hugs her mother close. He leaves, looking back for a moment before shutting the door.

I can’t even imagine the depths that Damon is going through right now. It is an often repeated fact (at least later in the show) that everything as a vampire is heightened. Senses and emotions. Happiness is ecstasy. Anger is rage. Grief is crippling despair. So Damon finally breaks into the tomb after everything he’s gone through to find that Katherine is not there. His mind is probably racing. He saw the townsfolk drag her inside, he saw them light the church on fire. If she’s not in the tomb, he must have thought that she didn’t make it, that she died in the blaze all those years ago. It’s the only thing that makes sense.

When he goes to confront Anna, he goes thinking that she knew Katherine wasn’t in there, that she had already died, and that Anna could have told him. But instead, he gets the heartbreaking truth, worse than if she had burnt to death. Katherine is alive and for a moment there is joy. But then it hits. Katherine is alive. She has been alive and free for 145 years. She has lived freely without a care in the world about Damon who has only lived for her. It was probably easier when he thought that she was dead. When she was dead, he had lost his love in a tragedy. If she is alive, he has been abandoned, his love and devotion not even worth the effort of a goodbye.

For years, he has been hearing about how he should move on, how Katherine isn’t worth it, how she’s just a girl and he has been steadfast in his conviction to save Katherine and to love her, flaws and all. It is only now that he realizes Katherine has not only been the end of his human life but the destroyer of his immortal life as well. He is alone and purposeless and worthless.
