You are about to hurry down stairs when you hear a car pull into the driveway. It looks like your DAD has returned from the grocery store. Oh great. He is beating you to the mail.

Do you remember when tumblr was overrun by kids in grey body paint and horns speculating over how their story would end, when browser extensions would ping almost every day alerting people to a webcomic update, when the anticipation of the next plot twist had people inventing chaotic AUs and sometimes other, completely fake webcomics?
Do you want to do it again?
Tumblr media
On April 13, 2024, I will turn on New Reader Mode in the Unofficial Homestuck Collection, and I will not turn it off again until April 13, 2031. Every day, I will post to this blog which pages were originally posted on the corresponding day 15 years ago, and read those associated pages - and if anyone else wants to experience or re-experience Homestuck in real time, I invite you to read along.
A few months back I had the idea of 'what if Dracula Daily but for Homestuck' and I considered how to make Homestuck work in email format - I think it's possible, but would be a lot of work and still wouldn't be as good a reading experience as the Unofficial Collection. So I modified the idea and just made a big spreadsheet of which dates every Homestuck page was posted on, and I'll be scheduling the page ranges to post day by day for myself and anyone else to follow along with in the app.
I came to Homestuck towards the end of its original run, so I've never had to wait for updates on the main comic - which I've heard is a very different reading experience to getting a few pages a day and having to endure long pauses in the last few thousand pages. I can't turn back time and start reading in 2009, so this is the next best way to get the real time reading experience. I am really interested to see if this will change my opinion on any aspects of the comic, as I like a lot of the things I know other fans hate, and I am extremely committed to seeing this through, even when it means not looking at some incredible moments for many years.
Will this be a good way to experience Homestuck? Will anyone else think this is a cool idea? I have no fucking clue, but ai'm excited to see how it works out. If other people are interested, I have other ideas including a Discord server in the style of r/stuck10yearsbehind, otherwise, I'll brave the solo journey.
Happy Cascade Day, Homestucks grab your strife specibi, go forth and be cringe 😎

Since we’ve been told that the cobalt / cerulean caste is predominantly male , and Mindfang is a female pirate that exists in opposition to the Alternian “rule of law”, i assume she’s a deviation from the standard of her caste’s expectations. what do you think the predominantly male law abiding cobalts do in Alternian society?
lately my assessment has been kind of leaning towards the idea that, in the sense that all of the castes were designed specifically to produce the 12 homestuck trolls; maybe the grand cosmic role of the cobalt caste is that they deviate?
beyond the fact that Vriska's job aspiration is seemingly to be a "gamblignant" (which unlike any of the other trolls' aspirations is very clearly not a real occupation), basically the one suggestion of a cerulean culture Hussie gives us is this line of commentary from Homestuck: Book 4, page 192:
The fact that [Vriska and Equius are] neighbors suggests there isn't that big a divide between blue and indigo in terms of status and daily life. Both classes probably cluster together somewhat in a kind of snobby symbiosis, since they're one notch below purple-blooded clown hell [...and] one notch above the jade and teal middling classes...
i've interpreted this symbiosis before as "man and wife" castes, as the cobalt caste having become vestigial or ornamental out of a lack of any other purpose of its own. and if Caliborn separated the trolls out into twelve classes in a mirror image of Sburb's twelve classes, it makes sense that the caste designated as the "Thief class" would be peculiar in this kind of way. Hiveswap's bluebloods being jobless malignants described as "vriskas" of varying kinds seems to play with that kind of idea.
but the blueblood symbiosis manifests itself in different configurations, and for a while it's Serket who harbours Zahhak; because Mindfang isn't merely a malignant outlaw. she's a Marquise, she's royalty! at least for a time, it seems that the gamblignants were allowed to operate as a nation of their own. so there's a historical precedent for at least some cobaltbloods operating as free agents while still filling a niche within the broader troll social paradigm.
presumably with the decimation of the gamblignants and the establishment of the modern Alternia, a lot of this potential for freedom disappeared; hence Vriska's shrinking into Equius' cultural shadow. but as Hussie suggests in his commentary, while the middling castes "revolve around more functional, municipal services", the bluebloods are true nobility, so there's probably still a lot of freedom available to them in terms of what roles they can fill as law-abiding citizens. if the primary role of the indigo caste is to uphold the regime of the purple bloods above, there's surely plenty of jobs that need doing in that sector, and so far as we know a troll of cerulean blood has the same opportunities to take these jobs; just with perhaps a little bit more ridicule and a little bit less social cachet.

What makes a comic good in your eyes? And what makes it bad?
Oof, that's a BIG question that I can't exactly give one single answer to. There are a ton of factors. For me the biggest thing is writing, while the art might be a turnoff if it isn't polished in the beginning, it's still not a dealbreaker for me, I've read tons of comics that started off still figuring out their art (and that's the beauty of webcomics, really). It's when the writing isn't interesting or good that I tend to drop off. Maybe the plot doesn't make sense or takes too long to establish what it's trying to do, maybe the jokes feel forced or poorly written.
I think writing tends to sort of take an unintentional backseat in webcomics, and it just comes with the territory. Tons of online artists naturally come up with their own characters that they want to write stories for, so they gravitate towards webcomics. Whereas writers - even online ones - don't tend to see webcomics as the default, they'll usually end up in the fanfiction circles or on Wattpad or even just ditching the online format entirely and going straight into trad publishing. It's why there are so many writers looking for artists in the webcomic community, you won't find artists looking for writers quite so much because they usually wind up using webcomics as an entry point into writing. Writers can't use webcomics as an entry point into drawing quite as well, there's a LOT more upfront work into learning how to draw vs. learning how to write (but writing is ultimately harder to master, knowing how to write scenes on the page doesn't necessarily mean you're writing those scenes well).
So I find more often than not the writing ends up being a dealbreaker for me. Art gets me interested enough to take a peek, but the writing is what keeps me invested, so if the writing isn't sound, I'm probably not gonna stick with it. If a comic does feel like it isn't written (or even drawn) up to what I would define as "good", I try to identify what exactly what's wrong with it, not just so I can better understand why it isn't working, but so I can implement that understanding into my own work. It's not just learning what works in a comic, it's also learning what doesn't work.
Still, I try to distinguish between whether a comic is "good or bad" vs. whether or not it's even meant for me. I've definitely read comics in the past that didn't click with me but I could totally see why people liked it, it just didn't appeal to what I was looking for or my humor or whatever. Some comics are objectively great and they just don't connect with me, like Scoob & Shag, Homestuck, etc. where I can respect why people like them, I just like, couldn't get into them no matter how many times I tried LMAO And then some comics are objectively not great and I enjoy them anyways, like Deep Fried Pudge, which is literally just a daily single panel dad-humor-full-of-puns comic, it had no right being in my subscription list when I was still on Tapas but something about it was so charming to me. I feel bad even calling it "bad" because it's not trying to be anything, it's just this humble little passtime project that someone started and never stopped. And I mean it has not stopped updating since 2012, every time I check in on it I'm astounded to see it's STILL going at 4,036 episodes. I have no idea what power the person who makes this possesses but they will surely outlive us all, I can only rationalize its existence as the closest I've ever been to perceiving God.

Hi everyone! Big news!!
I'm going to be returning to a regular posting schedule again starting on April 13th!
I have a bunch of titles already lined up and ready to go and I'm excited to get back to doing what I love.
On top of that, I'll continue to update my wiki daily or bi-daily to the best of my ability. I'll continue to add all the new definitions, pictures, links, pages, and whatever else I can think of.
As always, suggestions and feedback are more than welcome. I encourage all of you wonderful people to once again send in asks and requests.
Thank you to everyone who has stuck with me even through all of the absences and chaos that has been these last few years. I appreciate all of you and you bring me such comfort and joy, and I hope that I can maybe make your days slightly better with my autism passion for Homestuck and the classpecting system.
I love you all, and here's to Homestuck and good 2024 to come!

im not that other anon but i looked it up cuz i was curious. daily dose is a 4chan meme about a gif of piccolo raping vegeta. overtime it underwent a series of mutations (as memes are known to do) to the point where any combination of green and purple was made as or seen as an intentional reference to this original gif even when it was completely devoid of context. kind of like how the loss pattern is immediately recognizable to anyone whose terminally online enough and familiar with its origin but would seem totally innocuous to anyone else. i couldnt find exactly when but it does pre-date homestuck, looks like anywhere between 2004 and 2008?
to be charitable i did try googling if rosemary was a reference to daily dose, but could you believe it, googling homestuck + a meme that shares a name with a common phrase just gives you a lot of fandom pages with names like "a daily dose of homestuck". even when i narrowed down my search i couldnt find anything linking the two though
so, i feel confident in saying rosemary is a reference to daily dose exactly as much as johndave is a reference to the french flag
Thank you for your efforts lmao

homestuck in the style of Dracula Daily where you get a bunch of pages over a 3 month period then nothing for 13.7 billion years then roughly 3000 pages of webcomic over the course of a single 24-hour period then almost nothing for 3 years then another 2500 pages over the course of 6 months but you have a 50% chance of getting a page from each timeline. this is the only correct way to read this webcomic and I will not be taking suggestions

Little delights from my day
that post I reblogged yesterday (4/9/24) where you tagged the little positive delights from your day.... I feel like that might be a fun challenge to do every day, or as many days as I can remember. I almost never stop to think about those things, and I do think it might be nice to look back on and read every once in a while. So that I don't bother everyone with this daily quest, I'm going to just update this post every day with a new bullet point (under a cut), and I'll link this post in my pinned post. If that makes sense.
List of daily positive delights under the cut:
4/9/24: My pomegranate arils were NOT expired. Someone spilled maple syrup in the microwave at work and now it smells really good every time someone uses it
4/10/24: Was able to pre-order the new Apollo Justice Trilogy plushes
4/11/24: Found a cute, nice-looking font to write fanfic with. Hoping that using a fun font will motivate my writing. UPDATE: I wrote close to 1,500 words with the new font today!
4/12/24: My manager took the day off so I got burritos with my coworkers. The chicken wasn't too spicy this time, so I enjoyed it a lot
4/13/24: I saw a lot of Homestar Runner posts on my dash because it’s Homestuck day. Can’t find this shit on any other webbed site.
4/14/24: It was 72 and sunny so I spent some time writing outside
4/15/24: Got a nice comment on a fic I never get comments on
4/16/24: Sweet potato tempura roll my beloved. Oh okay also that post on tumblr with the map of all the locations those idiots on Supernatural went and they literally went to my city
4/17/24: My own writing made me cry, in a good way
4/18/24: Saw a really interesting lost media video on YouTube
4/19/24: Cute spider on the wall in the hallway at work
4/20/24: Decided not to skip this day after all. I played some Animal Crossing Wild World
4/21/24: I really am lucky to have caring friends. Also kittens in the discord!
4/22/24: My friend made a fun picrew
4/23/24: I set up a humidifier and an air purifier in my office to help with my dry/itchy/red/painful eyes. I think it might be working already????? My eyes feel good today

4/25/24: Made a neocities page and messed around with templates
4/26/24: Had a yummy impossible burger

hsrp post format
In the absolute gamble that Homestuck will still exist and be usable in 2031, I've scheduled every post for this project (or saved to drafts when the queue overflowed) so it's ready to go on 4/13, 69 days from now.
Homestuck ran for 2557 days (7 years including 2 leap years), but the comic was only updated on 1161 of those days. On each day with an update, there will be a post detailing the day's pages, numbered according to update days. So, 4/27/24 will be 'Homestuck Day 13' as 4/27/09 was the 13th day with an update, despite being the 15th day of actual time.
These posts will be tagged #homestuck replay and #homestuck. (I will not be using the tag 'upd8' due to actual, present day upd8s of Homestuck: Beyond Canon).
There will be other tags for other posts, like reactions and analysis and fanart, which I'll figure out as I go. No posts on this blog will spoil the comic beyond what's in the most recent upd8 post.
Upd8 posts will be posted at 4:13pm EST (GMT-5) daily, as this is the timezone Homestuck was written and posted from. If there wasn't an update that day, there won't be a post.
