Early 2000s English dub departments in anime studios did not understand the power they wielded when they hired Travis Willingham to voice a prominent secondary character for an mini arc in One Piece and let him be the voice for a character named “Daddy”

Usopp’s father is a pirate!

Yasopp aka Chaser.

(I really like his most recent character design).

Despite Yasopp leaving, and whatever choice words I/we/you have about the guy. That doesn’t mean he isn’t bada**!

I always find it interesting how when we’re first introduced to Usopp (depending on the manga or anime) we soon after find out who his dad is. It’s like Luffy just drops it on us. I remember thinking, “Woah, woah! His dad was in that flashback when Luffy introduced Shanks”. Usopp had increasingly started to become my favorite character at that point.

For some reason I find it incredibly cool that Usopp already had a bit of credibility given that his dad was already a bonafide pirate. And now that we’ve seen Captain Usopp with a slingshot (in the first or second chapter of the Syrup Village arc), we immediately pick up on the fact that there’s certainly someone he gets his sniping prowess from. If not from Yasopp, then who else?

Yasopp definitely made Usopp a much more interesting character too. Not that Usopp can’t stand on his personality and character alone, but with Yasopp, we definitely know Usopp has more to offer. We can always expect that “something” in the future. We can rest assured with the fact that he’ll one day acquire advanced observation haki or future sight (which he already has 👀).

When the Red Hair Pirates are brought up, we don’t only think of Shanks (and even Luffy), but we think of Yasopp too. Because Yasopp also serves as that reminder letting us fans know and see how far Usopp’s come as a pirate and young man.

I even hope that one day Daddy Masterson (it’s always been disputed if he’s canon—it’s likely a no) can make a cameo in the anime or cover art in the future where it showcases him reacting to another major sniper feat from Usopp. It’d be nostalgic and rewarding to see. ☺️

I was looking forward for the Daddy Masterson subplot because it says a lot about Yasopp as a character.

Daddy the Father is introduced as a former elite Marine shooter who became a bounty hunter, but Smoker points out that Daddy goes after guys with small bounties, because he doesn't want to risk dying from a Grand Line pirate's hand, and orphaning his daughter Carol.

Later he meets Usopp and duels with him for the sharpshooter goggles, but although Usopp runs away, Masterson doesn't kill him. Once it's revealed that Usopp is Yasopp's son, Daddy the Father tells him a story about how back in his Marine days he was dueling with Yasopp and lost.

Now, other Red Hair Pirates (at least the minor ones) were encouraging Yasopp to finish his opponent, and even Masterson himself tells him to do so since Daddy lost the duel. But Yasopp just comes to him, looks him up and notices the locket with Carol's picture and comments on the fact that he himself has a son he left.

"I... wasn't able to do anything for my son. A useless parent like me... One of me is more than enough."

Although, Yasopp chose to become a pirate, he often thinks and talks about Usopp. There is obviously some part of him that regrets not being by his son's side and being "useless parent". That's why he chooses to not only leave his opponent alive, but also to tell him to be close to his daughter.

So Daddy Masterson's current situation when he tries to be a good father, is the fruit of that duel.

Earlier when the duel was just over, Yasopp thanks Shanks that he didn't intervene; and as Yasopp was walking away from Masterson, and his crewmates were saying how good of a shooter he is, Yasopp says: "This wound I got shows that I'm still not good enough." So I suspect that he's driven by an ambition to be the best sharpshooter in the world, and in that regard Yasopp's situation and dynamic with his captain is similar to Zoro's.

This small flashback reveals a lot about Yasopp and I'm glad we've got it.

Ah sorry, I think it’s important to say I don’t do requests. Drawing for myself isn’t so easy these days so I feel lucky when I can. So drawing on request from others just isn’t in my energy and time reserves. I also don’t do commissions for a similar reason.

Luna does like who she is, physically speaking, she doesn’t really mind her appearance and doesn’t have time to worry about it, but she would like, if it was even possible, to stop worrying about everything all the time and she’d like to have more faith in herself.

Care : How does your OC engage in self-care, if at all? If they don't, why not?

As I said, self-care is the least of her worries 😭 she probably should take care of herself sometimes tho.

Intimacy : Is your OC the type of person to engage in long-term relationships, or are they more casual in their intimacy and affection? How do they feel about intimacy and relationships in general?

I don’t think she’s ready to engage in a long-term relationship, she’s definitely not mature enough, the affection is very private, and she won’t really show it to anyone else other than her lover tbh.

She’d definitely enjoy a relationship but doesn’t think about it often since their adventures take most of her thoughts. Intimacy is really important for her tho. She’ll wait a long ass time to talk to her crew about Shanks.

She’s self-reflecting a lot but her main goal remains the same; finding the one piece and being the greatest sharpshooter in the world. She definitely does not know everything that she wants and it’ll change often but it’s just part of her journey.

She’ll try to hide how unsure of herself she is as much as possible, thought, to be sure not to demoralize her crew and the people around her. (Much like Usopp that says all these big words and is nevertheless scared)

Family : What's your OC's family like? Is it a family of blood, choice, or something else? How does your OC feel about their blood relations? If they have a family of choice, how did they come together?

She had a little sister and her parents until she was 20. Again, imma do a fic about the whole story. It’s family by blood but god she wishes her parents weren’t related to her. Their relationship was complicated and distant, but she absolutely adored her little sister and would’ve died to protect her.

Luna’s mentor for a little more than a year was daddy the father/masterson. She had tried to reach him before for mentoring and advices, because he was known to be one of the quickest sharpshooter around, but he had refused to teach her due to personal reasons. She came back to Loguetown, two years later, and asked for guidance again which he accepted.

They get along pretty well, it’s a lot like a daughter and father kind of relationship. He pushes her to her limit and they both relate to one another since Daddy’s dream to beat Yasopp is now Luna’s. (She also loves Masterson’s daughter)

Partner : Does your OC currently have a partner? Multiple partners? How did they meet, and what is that relationship like?

She doesn’t currently have an official partner but her heart belongs to Shanks after they meet for the first time. It’s so intense that it leaves a mark on her and she definitely does not know how to handle it. (Imma do a fic about how they met for the first time so no worries hehehe)

Social Circle : What's your OC's social circle? Are they obligated to spend time with others in their circle, or are they happy to be there? Has their social standing and social circle ever changed, and if so, how did your OC feel about it?

Her social circle is mostly her crew (brass knuckle pirates) which includes, as of now, her captain; Megan (@lunar-cherries’s sona), the crew’s medic; Andrius (@lunar-cherries’s oc) and their scout; Marin (@stuckinthewrongworld’s oc). She absolutely adores her crew. There’s a reason she chose to follow Megan. They do have their ups and downs but they can count on each other and that’s what matters the most to Luna.

Her social circle changes every time they land on an island and meet other pirate crews, including the straw hats, the heart pirates, etc. Her crew easily makes friends and enemies, so they have a lot of acquaintances in the Grand Line and all the seas.

𝐇𝐄𝐋𝐋𝐎𝐒 & 𝐆𝐎𝐎𝐃𝐁𝐘𝐄𝐒

First : Has your OC ever been the one to leave first? Why did they go, and who did they leave behind? Do they regret it?

She has been the one to leave first and it’s a big part of her backstory. She left her hometown at 18, leaving her sister and parents being to become stronger and find Daddy Masterson to train her (that’s the first time she’ll ask him -> he refuses).

Luna deeply regrets it because it will be the last time she ever saw her family. She will always feel guilty about leaving them behind to die and it haunts her dreams for sure.

Exit : Has your OC ever had someone important leave their life in a way that was unremarkable, unintentional, or clumsy? How do they feel about it? Is there any chance they'll meet again?

I can’t think of anyone that has left her that was very very important. There’s Shanks that had to go his separate way and they both made peace with that, since they’re both pirates and after the same thing, but let’s say she really misses him and so does he. (They’re very discreet about it tho 😭)

There’s many chances they’ll meet again.

I can only think of Shanks tbh. She’d probably freeze for a second wondering what the hell is he doing here. He’d be smoother about it, holding absolutely no grudges, and exchanging long tender looks showing her that the spark is still there.

If it was possible to fall in love with the same person again, she would. But I feel like it will take a long time before they see each other again.

Past : Does your OC have any past partners? How did the relationship(s) end? Are any of their exes still in their life, and if so, do they get along?

So, listen, I was thinking of a one time thing with Smoker. Forced proximity kind of scenario. They don’t like each other that’s for sure but they could warm up to one another. Both denying their needs but giving up anyway.
